Marijuana POW dies in custody in Houston

(Raw Story) A woman serving a short sentence in a Houston, Texas, jail for possession of marijuana died in custody over the weekend, and officers are not saying how or why.
The 29-year-old, identified as Theresa Anthony, had expected to spend just two and a half weeks behind bars in the Harris County lockup. On Saturday, Cynthia Prude, Theresa’s mother, received a phone call from the jail’s Chaplain informing her that her daughter was dead.
Prude has not been allowed to see the body, nor has the Harris County Sheriff’s Department even spoken with her, according to area media.
On 4 June 2009, the Justice Department concluded a 15 months-long investigation into the Harris County facility and determined in the subsequent 27-page report that over 142 prisoners had died there since 2001. Most expired due to lack of medical care, the report claims.
The Associated Press noted that after the Justice Department declined to make its findings public, The Houston Chronicle was able to obtain a copy, which it released on the Internet.

Wait a minute, how is this possible? According to our last Drug Czar, John Walters, finding a non-violent offender in jail or prison for simple possession is like finding a unicorn.
Theresa Anthony could be you or me. Or could have been a young Barack Obama. Just another dead unicorn, expiring in a cage for the crime of preferring the safest choice of social relaxant or therapeutic medicine.
President Obama, if you can stop giggling for a moment, could you please put “legalization” back on the table? Director Kerlikowske, could you please find the time to add “decriminalization” to your vocabulary? You have the power to see to it that Theresa Anthony is the last unicorn to die in a cell.

  3. Was this her first offense? Do we know or not? That is kind of a big deal. I am strongly for the legalization and regulation of Marijuana and I agree that our current laws regarding Marijuana are ridiculous, but nonetheless they are laws and we must fight to change them through legal avenues.

    I live in Houston. This is where it happened. Here, this is where the drug czar goes wrong. Police are so power driven here it is pathetic. They have sooo many people that they have to book, it takes a day to a day and a half before they actually get a jail number so you can’t find anything else about them.
    Do something about it, I did. I wrote to Gary Elkins, Obama and Ron Paul. Go look these people up and write to them. I hope this will be a turning point in the legislation.

IF we ask our son’s and daughter’s not to reenlist then where will they be. When I saw this I knew it had to be brought to the media so I personally contacted foxnews , CNBC ,NBC and CNN and gave them the information along with my comment I had just put on here in post # 25 with the link to the site (here on NORML). Hopefully now they will do a story on it to make sure it does not happen again as well as to help stop this in just.
    She should have never been in jail for this in the first place and shows to America just how stupid it is to do such a thing and the ignorance of keeping MJ in prohibition. This all could have been avoided and they know that . The question is now what are they going to do about it be for other cases like hers happens?

  12. How sad, that one would die in jail for possession. But, what is also lamentable is the poor grasp of the English language of many of those leaving comments on this page. I don’t claim to speak perfectly, but perhaps the anti-Prohibition movement would be more respected if the proponents could properly articulate their beliefs. I am all for the legalization of the five fingered flower, but, more important to me, is that this nation as a whole doesn’t devalue the sacrifices of those past and present who have fought and died for the rights that we still have. Granted, everyday the government (funded by powerful lobbies) does what it can to further reduce these privileges, but I believe there is still a means that a popular outrage can force the current system to respond. Violence is not the answer. Thomas Jefferson once said something to the effect that a little revolution was a good thing every now and again, so, let us who desire change follow the example of Gandhi and other peaceful protesters to achieve the change that is so desperately needed.

  13. This does not suprize me at all.
    I was arrested in the 90’s in Houston jail, for less than a gram (simple possession). The jail mess up my bond from 1000.00 and printed it on paper as 100,000.00 Which keep me in jail for 2 weeks, because of this mess up.For those with any doubts I still have the paper work on the mess up with the bond. While I was in jail I personally saw a spanish kid coughing and the guard which the other inmates called Sargent Slaughter took the kid out of the way of cameras and beat him in the chest reapeting this until he cried and no longer coughed. At the time no inmate said nothing out of fear. AND WHAT DID THIS TEACH ME NOW AT 34 YEARS OLD – NOTHING JUST MORE FEAR OF THE COPS. I still smoke and made me more active in getting it legalized!

I grew up in Houston in the 60’s… the cops have always been borderline criminals weilding their own justice… I was hitchhiking abd the car was pulled over, the cop found a tab of acid in one of the occpants wallet… We were hauled to the jail and I was told I could go down right now and join the military or go to jail… the cop drove me down the street to the recruter and waited until I was all signed up… welcome to Texas…

  19. I wonder how many people have died as inmates due to circumstances like this and like described by Thomas?
    How many people have been robbed, assaulted, or murdered while trying to procure marijuana from the only source available?
    Compare that to how many people have died as a result of using Marijuana.
    How many people have died as a result of lung cancer from cigarettes? How many of those might have been saved by marijuana, which has recently been shown to not only prevent and inhibit cancer development, but also cures at least seven different forms of lung cancer?
    How many billions of dollars have made their way to washington on the backs of the tobacco lobby? (Keep in mind, my family grew tobacco in NC for more than 150 years…we stopped in the early 90’s when it became clear how corrupt and dishonest the big labels really are)
    How can the government possibly continue to claim that the laws prohibiting the use, possession, sale, and cultivation of Marijuana protect not only society, but the individual as well?
    This kind of hypocrisy in our government makes me sick.

  24. I am currently fighting a mmj charge in wa. and meet all the ginn case requirements and the affirmitive defense requirements as well as medical nessesity too. I know I’m dying as well as my wife, When will normal start organizing protest’s and such for small people as they go to court….What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground…How can you run when you know……Tin soldiers and the jack boots coming we’er finnally on our own….screw this I never back down …It’s way past time for everybody with a good soul to stand side by side in the streets courthouses an say enough is enough….if it don’t work …we got the second amendment….for now….these people probably wont understand anything else…when you only have a year to live what the fuck..be American..at this point I’d trade my life for her’s….sick of it…John

  28. As I have said in the past our lawmakers should be the ones in prison. They vote ever year to continue and fund the war on drugs. If they were truly interested in our best interest. They would take the money wasted on the war on drugs and putting people in jail and help people rather than destroying them. The bottom line is they do not consider the poor or near poor people that enjoy cannabis. Apparently they feel we are less than human because they treat us as less than human. While they drink themselves under the table. They put millions in the bank paid to them by the ones that profit from the war on US (drugs). The way I look at it they are feeding off the bones of our children while their children are above the law the way they are….

  29. ever since barack became white he has turned his back on the green movement. i voted for him because i thought he would have the balls to stand up for us little people. but once your white who cares about the peasants, so what if some black pot smoker dies in jail, whitey keeps telling us that pot kills. and damn it whitey will kill every last pot smoker to prove it. when i started smoking pot for my chronic pain and resulting depression, due to injuries sustained in the line of duty for the us army (sgt. e-5 honorably discharged medical) i became an outlaw, a dangerous wheelchair bound criminal, so when you see me rollin you bettah step aside i’m a menace to society. i was born white but now i smoke pot.

I was caught with a small amount and when they took us to get booked, the people running the jail passed around our pot and our pipe commenting on the quality and make of the pipe(sherlock holmes style lol) One of the arresting officers said he’s smoked so much he could “fill the whole room up with it”. Plus they laughed at us for being stupid and getting caught.
    So as all this is going on there are other people in the cells surrounding the booking area laughing and yelling obsenities and making crude gestures at us(the jail officers thought this was pretty amusing) and here i am thinking to myself. I’m a college student. I work 38 hours a week, and i pay my bills. And this is what I get for choosing to smoke marijuana over harmful alternatives to relax and unwind.
    So for the night they throw us in a cell with a couple drunken lunatics who wouldnt shut up and a scuzzy methhead who seemed a little off and wouldnt stop staring at us. Not to mention the fact that the room stunk like piss. It was like being caged up animals.It was quite a dehumanizing experience. Now I know this is nothing at all compared to the tragedy in the blog but it is just another example of what happens daily in this insane war on weed. All in the name of “justice”.

  32. I’m amazed at the fact that they say they are trying to keep children safe while at the same time we can legally KILL them in their unborn state. Now mind you, they call us the “irresponsible” ones.
    They want to keep the children safe but you can legally buy all the booze in the world, get drunk and cause all sorts of family trouble, kill families in drunken driving accidents, and so on.(The latest being Dante Stallworth’s incident in Miami for which he recieved 30 days in jail)
    They want to keep the children safe but you can legally purchase cigarettes for everyone to burn their lungs out and die.
    They say they want to help the sick and the dying but instead of providing a cheap means of health care, they want you to take all sorts of painkillers and drugs which drive costs through the roof and result in addiction, harmful side effects, overdoses ect.. And did i hear a Trillion dollar health care budget?
    I, and NORML could list a million more facts that should enrage the intelligent free thinkers like you and I but it’s clear where our leaders’ priorities are. It’s about them and who’s in their wallet.

    Remember the 60`s 70`s, 80`s (war on drugs)90`s? For half a century drunks have put everyone with a joint in their mouth into a lower class of humanity. While they enjoy the “freedom” of picking up their 10 yr. old daughter and her 3 friends for a slumber party. On the way home they stop at the local liquid drug dealer a.k.a. liquor store, for a fifth of whiskey for him, and a case of wine coolers for the little girls. As he passes the local drunken police chief the chief says, “Hello fine citizen. I see you are picking up some alcohol with children in the car. Let me know if you see anyone smoking marijuana.” He takes the little girls and the booze to the safety of his home. The insanity of this little story is the baby raping drunk didn`t break one single law. Till he got the girls drunk enough to forget the disgusting acts the drunk performed on them.None of them told because they thought it was a bad dream.
    If you want pot legal you have to see the enemy. We know who the enemy is and he loves his alcoholic drinks. So in short, they use children as a reason to keep marijuana off the streets. So our job as patriotic Americans who choose to smoke weed to help them save the children by putting alcohol where it belongs. All companies that manufacture the pediphile prefered drug known as alcohol should be put in prison, just as a person would for growing 20 plants.

  38. Can some one tell me why violent people are free. Ive never met a marijuana toker that jepordized anyones safety.
    Too many murders are unsolved.
    People are getting harsher sentences for drug charges than murderers.
    The laws are insanity. Just like when they aimed everything against crack. Harsher penalties for watered down coke.. If you had a gram of coke u get a slap on the wrist. if you had a little crack aprox 1/18th the strength of avg street coke.. you get 3+ years in prison.
    I laugh at people who say this country is free.
    When will the innocent cease to suffer.
    When will we quit our whineing and actualy do something about our goverment that is out of control.

    we need to act. stop being lazy. at a minimum we should all comment on this injustice. Use your voice and speak up. Next print out your comment as a letter. print the story. Print everyones comments, mail it to your state represenative and plead them to do something about these insane laws before more innocent people have to suffer or die. send it to your local newspaper as well
    can some one please make it easy for everyone. with a step by step video or web page on how to do just that.
    If enough people tell their state represenative.. our politicians have to act.
