The Other 'L' Word: Lying

Former Drug Czar Barry McCaffrey “Lies” To Beat The Band About Cannabis…Then Again, What Else Is New?
In the media rush to cover the DOJ memo on the Obama administration’s redirecting federal law enforcement efforts away from arresting and prosecuting state compliant medical cannabis providers CNN’s Lou Dobbs interviewed former Drug Czar Barry McCaffrey and Cato Institute’s Tim Lynch…

Checkout Tim’s on-point rebuttal of McCaffrey’s usual double-speak, and that of others like blogger Joe Campbell, who’ve simply called out McCaffrey as, in Mr. Campbell’s view, “a liar”.
Any long time observer of Mr. Caffrey’s m.o. when being interviewed is to tell some whoppers to an unquestioning media, but in these recent videos McCaffrey, again, wrongly claims that no one gets arrested for cannabis; no one goes to jail or prison for cannabis-related offenses; that he didn’t lose in the seminal case Conant vs McCaffrey; cannabis is de facto legal in the United States, etc…Geesh! I guess when the hundreds of cannabis consumers who call the toll-free number (888-67-NORML) or email NORML this week post arrest looking for legal information and assistance, we”ll just inform them, ‘Don’t you know, according to Barry McCaffrey, cannabis is de facto legal, and that you didn’t really get arrested.’
Makes one wonder how honest and credible McCaffrey has been for the last nine years as a paid, on-air military consultant for NBC News when his track record for anti-pot prevarications (I’m in DC…and therefore not suppose to use the word ‘lie’) are so obviously refuted. If he’d so obviously twist the truth about cannabis, would he mislead an audience or interviewer about America’s military and defense contractors?

  1. I have seen McCaffrey several times on MSNBC spouting his usual lies. Why do people keep saying the MSM is “liberal”??
The MSM can’t even do one of their very rare stories on hemp without including a lame Cheech and Chong joke. And these clowns are supposed to be “investigative journalists”??

  2. is it just me or does it seem that if we made Mj legal..say for 21 years old and up like alch. that all the dealers and gangs and fighting. like prohibition back in the day with alch. would turn into liqueur stores, beer distributors sports sponsorship….. INDUSTRY.
on top of that if its not illegal to sell pot..why would a dealer& gang need to shoot rob steal or what ever it is they do that plants them in jail…
it would A make them disappear or B turn them to a legit business operation and in turn stir up the economy

  3. Lok at how angry Mccaffery looks. He is beside himself with rage. he cannot put a full sentence together due to the contortios on his face.
I’d love to see him profiled on that fox show following House, called, “lie to me.”
How would have a terrific time exposing McCaffrey is the liar that he is. But what truly needs to happen is that the press in interviews like this needs to stop him assertion by assertion or sentence by sentence and literally parse these assertions and sentences, demanding that he produced or quote proof. It was obvious to see how angry McCaffrey was versus how cool and calm the other two people were.
These are the two were matter-of-fact, pragmatic, practitioners, while McCaffrey has been a paid spokesperson for drug prohibition.
When he says, “drug legalization… we are not going to do it…” he is in a fantasy world. The United Nations drug office is obviously on its way out, as its bureaucrats are thrashing about in press releases, as they languish in New York with diplomatic immunity while the rest of us have to pay our parking tickets, instead of being in the hellholes from which they come, claiming that we must have drug prohibition worldwide, we must have it, we must have it, it must have it, I must have it, ad infinitum ad nauseam, which is interestingly enough exactly what McCaffrey seems to say.
The only thing, for example, that the Brown government in the UK has been able to do is to symbolically reclassify cannabis as an arrestable offense, even as in the run-up to do this, each and every member practically of the Brown cabinet incoming had to admit to and apologize for their cannabis use in college including Jacqui Smith the home Sec. now disgraced because of abuse of her expense declarations as home Sec., when cannabis was a class B. offense which is what she was charged with doing this since the Brown Cabinet came to office.
Both Brown and Smith and the daily Mail lied, simply lied about the increased potency and increased use while making up an alleged link to, “psychosis,” and, “psychotic illness,” and, “schizophrenia,” which simply does not exist in the way they were intimating in their campaign, which was something they had to do because Brown hates cannabis. He comes from Scotland and the Scottish law enforcement apparatus hates cannabis.
The Brown government did this despite three examinations of the subject by the very prestigious ACMD, council of scientists charged with giving the government advice about drugs, in the preceding five years indicating the cannabis indeed should be downgraded to a non-arrestable offense, and that it should stay that way against the Brown government’s wishes.
Further indication of insanity with respect to politicians and their spokespeople like McCaffrey and her minions like Smith and drugs policy is that after this intensely speedy reclassification of cannabis which was entirely symbolic because the police in most areas of the country are going to remain lenient to the extent they can. In other words drug policy with respect to cannabis has in fact changed in the UK despite the Brown government’s wishes and actions.
And God knows what Barry McCaffrey is doing right now except for being a paid consultant who doesn’t like marijuana. Remember he made medical marijuana patients remain fodder in the war on drugs during his period of time in office, also against the pleading advice of those underneath him.
And when Barry McCaffrey talks about arrests, he very carefully indicates only the federal system, whereas we know most arrests for possession are made by local officials in various states, as the various drug laws are mostly state matters.
So he can in fact deny that there are nearly 775,000 people arrested every year for the last 16 years, or since 1993, when he came into office, arrested on to possession of marijuana charges alone.
Those people in the state systems.
He talks about Marinol, recognizing that it doesn’t work very well, but not recognizing that Marinol is not equal to cannabis.
But the overwhelming thing to recognize which is significant about these clips here McCaffrey is how absolutely full of rage and anger he is. This man realizes the war has been lost, and he has been one of the main strategists for the war. He selected medical marijuana is the focal point to get rid of, and look what’s happened… it’s gone from California’s proposition 215 in 1996 to 14 states and several more coming up. He lost. He lost big. That means they lost. That means they are all very very unhappy in their little meetings where they drink booze probably now in order to console themselves.
I just wonder how Barry McCaffrey knows that we will never legalize drugs? 15 years ago the situation in California was unimaginable. Five years ago debate about cannabis legalization within the California legislature, which happened this week, would have been unimaginable. Five years ago, a citizen initiative on the ballot was a concept. Today assuming that enough people sign the petition, this is reality.
As recently as a year ago flying with your medical cannabis was difficult, dangerous, risky, and nearly impossible. Today the TSA, transportation security administration, has a policy that properly documented medical marijuana patients will not be harassed.
so it’s easy to see why McCaffrey would be angry, why the UN drug office officials feel so threatened for their jobs, as people are actively even speaking of the existence of a single conventions on narcotics, and whether or not they’re a good idea. Active questioning of undying allegiance to prohibition is a huge part of the world debate at this point, which is why or at least one reason why governments hate the Internet so much… news organizations too. The BBC, for example, is a strictly prohibitionist organization and does not want prohibitionist ideas to be discarded and prohibitionist ideologues out of office, any office, from dog catcher to federal water master to the UN secretary general

  4. I know that McCaffrey lies through his teeth. He has lied on television about cannabis since he has been drug czar so he has no credibility. I haven’t believed anything he has said. I don’t know why they bother to have him on anymore.

  5. De facto legal, is he seriously that stupid to think we believe that shit? Come on down to my town McCaffery , I got a number of friends that would like to talk to you. I have a number of friends whos lives have been ruined by an arrest of very small amounts of cannabis. Pull your head outta your ass McCaffery and stop the LIES!
And this crap of saying the feds dont harrass med cannabis patients…WTF! Havent your heard of Television or internet? People like you have no buisness in government of any kind.
So what else have you told bold face lies about over the years McCaffery? Any thing concerning military?
The day you disappear from public view the better.

  6. great final comment. although 24/7/365 news still cannot probe long enough. Wow ever since JonStuart made that script, and we’ll leave it there.
But, all drugs are currently unregulated and that is bad for police and the live or whatever he said… That is profound! Nice job given the horrible free speech media.

  7. And as for the second video. 200 kg or more my ass. In my state an ounce or more can get you a federal conviction.

  8. correction. I just checked and 30g or more can still be classified as a misdemeanor unless they want to say you were distributing.

  9. what…lame street media using their tool the tell-lie-vision to spew propaganda to promote their scientific dictatorship and social engineering agendas…no tell me it isn’t so…paid talking head Barry McFart…needs to take a few tokes, watch some cartoons, then take a very long nap…bye bye

  10. Notice how the one prohibitionist says “in LA we’re talking about 900 pot shops … and the caregivers are mexican criminal originizations that have murdered a lot of people in mexico” So marijuana prohibition is still only being argued by old racists. I’m surprised more is not being said about the the fact that prohibition is purely a racist motivation. Everything that guy said pissed me off, but you cannot deny that he only wants it illegal so it can continue to prosecute “mexican criminal originizations”. If we want it taxed, and regulated we need to start calling it by it’s american name cannabis.

  11. This is to be expected. If the Prohibitionists didn’t lie about everything, then they would be legalization supporters.

  12. proof that some people should simply dig their own graves and leave this planet…
“no one is de facto decriminalized”?! damn, people are stupid…

  13. Ask anyone on Probation if they will get sent to jail for smoking MJ. I believe they will answer yes. Many get sent to jail for smoking!

  14. Why does it seem in every one of these debates it’s a member of Law Enforcement or FORMER Law Enforcement pushing for the continued crack down on people whose only crime is Cannibus consumption. Shouldn’t it be private citizens speaking against it, for whatever their views are????
Also if our Pres Obama said he was for the decriminalization of Cannibus lets ask him to at least honor his word on this and introduce some Ideas about reducing the Federal Penalties For “Simple Possesion” and reduced to a civil violation and something like a $100 fine and no incarceration like how New York, Mass, and Cali have it??

  15. #14 Hit the nail on the head. The name Marijuana was used by Anslinger and others to confuse congress and the public about what they were going to make Illegal. If they had called it Hemp or Cannabis they would not have succeeded. This law was based on racism and greed (Hearst and DuPont). Anyone that supports this law is an outright racist and is working for the people that profit from prohibition. The truth is starting to have a very profound effect on public opinion.

  16. I’m not from Ca. but is it true these pot shops are being run by Mexican cartels? How safe is the cannabis they are providing?
After doing some research, it does seem like a lot of pot shops around the Los Angeles area. I support marijuana legalization and it appears it is almost a done deal in Ca. with all these pot shops. How hard is it to get a doctors recommendation note?

  17. It is the same story, different day. And McGafferty is a perfect example of why we will win. The old proverb about telling one lie has to be covered by two is true, for him and the anti-drug cartels. As long as we speak the truth, without embellishments, with out attacking the speaker or their lack of common sense, and present facts to their fiction,we will win.
The marijuana plant needs no embellishments or lies told about it for it to stand up to their inspections and lies,as it has stood up to 40 years of NIDA to find anything dangerous enough too justify the money they have spent trying to keep it illegal. If NIDA or any other scientific or clinical testing had proven such a dangerous link too marijuana, they wouldn’t have to be telling lies to justify their actions.

  18. Has Mr. McAffrey ever heard of parole violations? Yep, smoking a joint can land someone back in prison, and ironically, its probably one thing that might help those people. I’m not sure if they get the same time as they would had they never been in the legal wringer, but putting someone back into jail at taxpayer expense for smoking a joint is the most ludicrous thing ever.
Of 890K+ arrests in 2008, I’d say the chances that at least a good portion did some jail time or were at least booked and released taking away time for REAL crime.

  19. I really really hate that guy. We are so far advanced in our technology, philosophy, and knowledge of the universe in general, how do bold-faced liars like this pile of shit get away with spewing foul fibs so easily disproven its as easy as 1 2 3? Our grandparents heard our gov officials spout lies and were forced to believe because the knowledge contrary to it was hard to come by. Now with our modern digital world its insulting to have to suffer this bastards words.

  20. Being that I was once in the Military I know the ideology behind the Generals thoughts and logic. He speaks while walking on eggshells because he must please his masters. Although when he sleeps at night he may actually not believe what he says he must say it in a public forum. It just pisses me off that he could say the Mexican drug cartels are directly selling and profiteering off the dispensaries in LA. You can’t find Mexican rag weed in a clinic if you tried, and to FUCKING SAY THAT PROP 215 HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE DIRECT DEATH’S OF 14,000 PEOPLE IN MEXICO IS RIDICULOUS! AHHHHH!!!

  21. I just can’t believe that marijuana continues to be illegal when alcohol is a perfect example of a drug that IS legal and IS regulated very well. People will say that alcohol is a problem because of drunk drivers and the damage they cause. That is not alcohol’s problem, it’s the user’s problem. A good way to keep drunks off the road is to increase the penalty for drunk driving. Give a drunk one chance, and if they repeat the offense, then make them do some hard time instead of just restricting their license and fining them. You just have to lock the idiots away so they can’t hurt other people.
I wonder if there are more people killed due to the war on drugs than there are people who are killed by drunk drivers.

  22. Editor Quote: “If he’d so obviously twist the truth about cannabis, would he mislead an audience or interviewer about America’s military and defense contractors?”
This is an interesting point you make. One thing I’ve said for awhile is that if the government is trying to make marijuana seem worse than alcohol and this is something you can prove is not true — what else are they lying to us about that you _can’t_ readily prove in your home.
Anybody can go find marijuana in their City/Town and can also go to the market and pick up a bottle and do an “elementary science experiment” and prove the dangers of being under the influence of alcohol VS being under the influence of marijuana.
If we can easily prove these differences — why are our voices not being heard?
Now every time you see somebody going against marijuana you can ask yourself — “If they are lying to me about this … what ELSE are they lying to me about that i CAN’T PROVE?”

  23. Well, at least he will die very soon, before I turn 30 I’m assuming, so its ok. One less idiot on the planet. I hope he believes in Jesus so he can forgive his poor lost soul.

Two former Pennsylvania judges are awaiting trial for allegedly accepting MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in kickbacks from private detention facilities to convict juveniles and send them to be incarcerated. The state supreme court yesterday dismissed thousands of convictions heard by Ciavarella. A juvenile justice advocacy group said more than 6,500 juveniles were affected and most won’t be retried. This is an egregious example of PRIVATE PRISONS PAYING JUDGES to send convicted juveniles to their system. How many of these stories need to be aired before the public at large understands that PRISON FOR PROFIT IS A BAD IDEA?
I wonder how many marijuana cases were tried in these courts?? THESE JUDGES WERE PAID TO SEND KIDS TO PRISON UNJUSTLY! They should get life without parole in their own prisons.
I have included the URL above. Click the posting date above to read about it.

  25. Barry is obviously a completely dishonest moron. I think even his affectation as an “old country boy” is an act. It’s too bad so many people fall for it. The only thing he said which I agree with is that Marinol is not a very good drug. No, it is not, it is synthetic and lacks the 60+ other natural compounds which work together in the natural form of the plant and is about 800 times more expensive. Marinol is just a “knockoff” of the original.
There is a petition on to legalize marijuana. so far it only has 14,216 signatures. If you have not already done so, please take a minute to add your vote. This petition needs 100,000 signatures to proceed. The outcome of this legislation would be to treat it like we have done alcohol and tobacco. This is the best way to handle substance use, not with street dealers, but with legally run shops that ID.

  26. Thanks again NORML for not letting these bastards get away with their lies. It’s awesome that this time we had some other voices on air to let the viewers know Mcliarpants is full of it.
The government lied about so much in the past, they have lied about so much in the present (especially cannabis) so when one asks whether the US government is not truthful I can’t help but notice the track record when considering that.

  27. If people let government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826)

Enlighten the people, generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like spirit.

    Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826)
    Check it out.
Do any of these Quotas sound familiar?.
Maybe our founding Fathers werent so stupid.

  29. I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743 – 1826)

  30. In addition to the numbers going to prison for just smoking, how about the countless numbers that loose employment due to random testing done by employers? Is this a reasonable way to treat workers? Current tests do not show impairment at the time of testing just historical use. Accuracy rates of these tests are highly questionable and near impossible to argue against if failed. I must endure random tests to feed my family. I know I am among the majority not the minority. This country that I love sends the message it hates me and my privacy.

  31. Hello my name is james grover in 06/09 i was stopped in Ava Missouri my car was searched and at that time about 1/8 of a gram (a crumb ) of marijuana was found in my car i was givin a ticket have since went to court now on 11/06/09 i will have to spend 2 days in jail for this offense i was convicted of now mind you I am a valid medical Cannabis
card holder from California and have all my paper work in order so you can tell mr Mccaffrey he is full of shit and tell him to read The United States Constitution
    article 4 section 2
The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States
thank you for your time and all your help norml

  32. Why is this senile old man still getting air time? Wipe him and his generation off the news, they have done enough damage in this world between the prop 13, the social conservatives, the war hawks, the war on drugs and the war on civil liberties, the war for empire. I’m sick of them. Good Riddance. It is time to make a better world for our children and grandchildren and stop lying to them about MJ. It is time to stop putting good people in jail and doing our best as a society to destroy their lives because we don’t like what they smoke in the privacy of their own homes. It is time to stop denying pot smokers jobs and then pointing the finger at them saying see what pot does to you. It is time to stop punishing people because we don’t like them. Stop the Witch Hunts.

  33. McCaffery is a goddamn WEASEL!!
He’s gonna burn in hell with the rest of the prohibitionist fuckwads in this country who continue to ruin people’s lives and try and tell us it’s not happening.

  34. My cousin had throat and neck cancer and asked her doctor about Marinol after losing down to 85 lbs. He told her it was almost $240.00 per pill and that her insurance would not pay for it. He said “it is cheaper for you to go to Atlanta and get the real stuff.” Needless to say. Who the hell would buy it at that cost? I don’t think it is as McCaffrey said that it doesn’t work. Although I am sure since the government made it, it couldn’t be as good as the stuff GOD made. Touche’

  35. McCaffery method of lying is: “That is the way it is because I said so”. Prohibionist knows that McCaffery is lying just to make his opponents angry and confused.
It is an old ancient Chinese military tactic.
Lou Dobbs personally does not favor marijuana, and I’m sure that he will going make it all sound like a sinister conspiracy to legalize all drugs.
Nobody hardly ever questioned the sinister act of marijuana prohibion and the growth of prison population in the United States as a method of political cleansing. Remember who wrote the “The Control Substance Act of 1970” by whose orders?

  36. Enough with legalizing all drugs. Most other drugs can kill you on the spot! Marijuana can not. If these fools keep going on about legalizing ALL drugs our chance of legalizing Marijuana is shot!

  37. When he says that the cartels are involved with the dispensaries,he is probably right. Since they are ow buying real estate w/ houses for indoor grows, the are also growing med grade marijuana and moving it through the clinics, just as he imagines the are. I would if I had made 1.4 billion last year.
There is no way too stop the cartels except complete legalization and allowing us to grow them out of existence.

  38. This McCaffrey tool has free reign over at MSNBC’s otherwise fair coverage of the legalization of marijuana.
Every time this ass clown opens his mouth, he spews outright lies and hate. And, because of his military status the media seem to consider him a scientist, doctor, and judge all in one. It is sickening.
Yes, this man’s hate, racism, and lies speaks volumes about our military leadership. Think about this one… how the hell did he get where he is today with thinking and behaving like this all these years?
    That is the scariest part.

My thoughts are short, but to the point, 3 simple questions.
    1. Does it please you to oppress us, and test us with laws against our faith?
    2. Do you find satisfaction in controlling our spirit, and the spirit of God within us? Is it God’s spirit you’re after?
    3. Are you here to torture us before our time?
These are three questions we put directly to you, and demand immediate answers from you. In the meantime
…stop the threat of aggression…or…be faced with [the] overwhelming will of the people. You are an almighty trial, and a nuisance, and we intend to get in the deep creases of your face…and…be highly noiceable to you. We are not affraid of spending too much time defending our faith against aggressors. In fact…because of your crimes against humanity, and your thinly vailed social and religious criticisms…
we look forward to it. We don’t insist that you stand down, only that you step aside…for the love of God.
We’re not over the edge. Nobody wants to throw themselves to the lions. Christians especially can attest to that…”Been there…done that.” Besides,
“A dead fish can’t swim with the school.” So!…for that reason…understand…”WE DON’T NEED A GUN TO WIN A REVOLUTION.” We can win it by
boycotting/abstention. It’s as simple as that! We just turn our backs to you, and walk away from you and everything you stand for. Our abstention is as “deadly” as any weapon you possess. In the past, your modus operandi has been to kill ua with a thousand cuts…a thousand little cuts until we bleeed to death. “NO MORE!” Frankly…were we, of a “get even mentality”…”an eye for an eye” would be to keep you “awake forever” and let you burn up in your own skin.

  40. Smoke a joint?
    Well the solution is simple.
Sit in a jail cell for a year.
What is wrong with these prohibitionist idiots?! Why do they care if others smoke or not, they are not being forced to.
The prohibitionist laws make absolutely no sense whatsoever. They are not decreasing drug use. They are not limiting drug access to children. They are increasing organizing crime. They are greatly increasing drugs damages to society.

  41. I am not in any support of any other drugs, including alcohol and tobacco. Both of which are incredibly toxic and harmful btw.
Legalization can help those who choose to use more harmful drugs much better than criminalization can. Complete legalization of all drugs can also help our tax money be spent on rehabilitation efforts for addicts and other burdens to society, rather than jail cell spots.
