CBS News: "Pot Measure One Step Closer To California Ballot"

As a general rule, NORML tends not to publicize or comment on ballot initiative drives — including campaigns we are involved in — until they have officially qualified for the ballot. But in this case, we (and the mainstream media) just couldn’t resist.

Pot Measure One Step Closer to California Ballot

An initiative to make marijuana legal, and open to local taxation and regulation, is one step closer to getting on the California ballot this November.
Backers of the initiative on Thursday turned in nearly 700,000 signatures to state officials to place the measure on the state ballot, according to reports — far more than the 433,971 valid signatures required. California Secretary of State Debra Bowen has until June 24 to certify the initiative, the Sacramento Bee reports.
The measure, if approved by voters, would allow anyone over 21 years old to possess up to an ounce of marijuana or grow plants within a limited space for personal use. It would also allow local jurisdictions to tax and regulate it.
[Author’s Note: There is a clause in the initiative that allows for municipalities, if they desire to do so, to establish regulations governing the retail distribution and sale of cannabis. Personal, non-commercial possess or cultivation of marijuana would not be subject to taxation under this initiative.] … An April Field Poll found that 56 percent of California voters supported legalizing marijuana, and Mark DiCamillo, the poll’s director, said the initiative had a 50 percent chance of passing, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Next week, proponents of a statewide measure to legalize medical marijuana in South Dakota will also turn in signatures to the Secretary of State’s office to place the proposal on the November 2010 ballot. Petitioners claim that they possess nearly twice the number of signatures necessary to qualify for the ballot.
Separate ballot drives are under way in several other states, including Washington and Oregon.

  1. Here we go! The kettle is starting to overflow! Cross your fingers, because once California goes the rest of the west coast will quickly follow. And once people realize that what they have been lead to believe would happen by their own government isn’t going to happen after all, things are going to change all over the country very quickly.
Now only if the secretary of state for Washington State would assign a number to the marijuana initiative pending there! Feet have been dragging . . . . . http://www.sos.wa.gov/elections/initiatives/people.aspx
I am personally rooting for Washington to be the first to take a commonsensical approach to marijuana, but we’ll see! Those who feel their careers depend on prohibition but would never admit it seem to have a loud voice these days.

  2. AND IN ARIZONA!!!! We have almost twice as many signatures as required to get MMJ on the ballot in November, also. This time… WE’RE DOING IT RIGHT!!!

  3. Its QUICKLY becoming political suicide NOT to support drug law reform. Its only going to take ONE state to ignore federal law, then the dominos will fall hard and fast.

  4. People need to know…We as states..can through out our laws that comply with federal laws. thats the beauty of our constitution folks. Fedral laws and government is nothing without our support (states). We give them power , if so desired , we can just as easily take that power away. Just think about it. where do they get their funds to operate? US, via tax laws. If all states ignored tax laws , they would stop functioning. That just one example . The same can happen with prohibition. They can’t arrest everyone under their federal law , they dont have the funds ,man power or space. Nor would the states react well to OUR laws being violated.
I just have one question for our federal government…At what point will you give in and just remove the prohibition on cannabis and work with us, WE THE PEOPLE, on something much more sensablie than ruin our people..our country…?
You in the federal government know all too well…the only ones making money off drugs are the drug dealers/cartels/terrorists…and yes…law enforcesment and those connected with law enforcement. The rest of the country is paying the price of your profits.
The people are learning real fast , seeing your hypocrasy . Federal government..Do you want to be respected by the people or do you want to FEAR the people? The choice is yours…We CAN make you impotent.

  5. Is the certification by the California Secretary of State the final step that needs to be taken for this measure to end up on the ballot ?

  6. This is a good sign. The tide is turning and we need to pickup speed in this new direction.
Share the great information about cannabis and hemp by having friends, family, and potential MMJ patients check out the Cannabis TV website at CannabisTV.org

  7. We need reform in indiana, but i admire those states that are working to give thier citizens more of the freedoms of choice that all americans deserve. Im temped to move to a better state (when Im not a POW anymore), but I know that Indiana needs people to work on making the changes it’s citizens well deserve, and abolish our outlandish/ ludicris laws. Everybody remember it takes everyones effort to change the worlds propaganda based veiws. Keep doind what your doing.

  8. I think the only way to legalize is for the people to vote for it. We might get a few minor victories like the one recently in California but I think in the long run politicians won’t have the balls to do it on their own.

  9. I actually think we are farther than 50% along. After I got my medical license here in California to deal with my migraines, my parents, (STAUNCH right wing types who adhere to VERY conservative platforms) have now seen how much the herb has alleviated my pain and nausea from the headaches. I’ve tried EVERY drug out there via Western Medicine and ONLY cannabis has come close to a long term, non-invasive, no-hangover solution. As a result of seeing their daughter not only vaporize the weed, but continue on successfully and not become some kind of whacked out addict (a’la the party line, as you all know…one thing HAS to lead to another???) they have told me resolutely that if the ballot contains a measure that is for legalization—they are voting “YAY VERILY!” on the dotted line. Now, if my folks, born in the midst of reefer madness propaganda, can buck up and admit it’s all been a farce—-how many other noble types none of us know about or expect will similarly get out the vote, so to speak??
Change is a-coming! Crossing my fingers.

  10. If it goes to ballot in California, it will pass. Nobody opposes it out there except prison guards and fundamentalist Christians (and they care much less about weed than other things)… Let’s get this domino effect rolling.

  11. We are now entering into a time when it will no longer be appropriate to attack marijuana users. The more mainstream the emerging legal cannamarket is allowed to be portrayed, people will come to realize that their fears about marijuana and pot smokers was just primitive prejudice.
If California wants another Napa valley wine country, here is another similar market that can add to the entire economic pie. What is holding people back? It sure is not science, since doctors can recommend it as medicine in 14 states. Also the AMA and other medical organizations are calling for further research.
So what is holding the USA back from a new economic stimulus for the common citizen? Hate! People have been programed to hate pot and pot smokers through government propaganda. And anyone prone to be a Nazi, or a racist, or any general ‘all around’ hater in society is allowed to hate drug users.
In the future this loophole will be closed for the psychopath. And states like California have a chance to not only show that they are compassionate human beings, but also smart business people!

  12. God i wish we could get a ballot drive/voter initiative in Mass!!! We cant leave it up to the politicians…
81% voter support would make it an easy win…

  13. huh i guess you could say marijuana is spreading like a weed. sorry someone had to say it

  14. Honestly, I dont think this is going to pass, but if it does it would be like the best christmas present ever and having sex with pamela anderson (in her prime), Jennifer Anniston, and a really hot milf at the same time. haha Right On to all the people of NORML, you guys are heroes to people around the world and you will be in the history textbooks of the future as the people who helped end this ridiculous prohibition on the one of the most sacred organisms on this planet. Hopefully my kids will laugh at me for talking about how people used get arrested and have a criminal offense on their record just for consuming cannabis. Anyway, if there is anything that I can do to help move Maryland and South Carolina in the right direction, any tips would be appreciated.

  15. Get ready for a big counter push from the moral crusaders against legalization. They believe they have sacrificed too much in the culture wars. Are now polishing their armour and sharpening their metaphorical weapons to prepare for battle against us.

  16. We need just need to get one state to pass this in order for our cause to be respected nationally. The battles will be in the Pacfic states for 2010. If we can win by ballot initative in California, Oregon or Washington the media will not be able to ignore the growing popularity of cannbis reform and the issue will lose alot of its stigma. I suspect many other states would be willing to follow suit as well. It will also make for an interesting states rights battle since many of the social conservatives who are against cannabis reform have used the 10th amendment argument in Gun/Gay/Abortion debates. With resaonable amounts of success and failure.

  17. re; “possess up to an ounce of marijuana”
wow, i can have a WHOLE OUNCE !!!
and how much is allowed to the guy who sells me my ounce ? one ounce ??
    let’s limit beer to a 4-pack, a 6-pack would be too much.
and limit tobacco to 14 ciggarettes, 20 would be too much.
alcohol and tobacco are much more harmfull, and there are no such limits.
sure, an ounce is better than nothing,
    and i applaud any victory,
but it still looks like we are trying to “win over” the anti-pot fanatics with rediculous limitations.
–we don’t need their support anymore.
we are the majority, now, so let’s act like it.
REGULATE POT LIKE TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL.

  19. It will now be interesting to watch the massive opposition effort that will be orchestrated by those who profit from prohibition.

  20. It will be fascinating to see how the federal agencies respond as cannabis is legalized, state by state. It seems to me that the DEA will be rendered impotent as far as enforcing marijuana prohibition because they simply cannot arrest millions of people openly using, growing, selling and buying cannabis.
This is great fun! Some of us have been waiting and working for this day for 40 years.

  21. What you are NOT Saying is, California will Profit from “National Legalization” the most Along with Florida and Some of the Other Southern States where the Growing Conditions are best, Their Exports to Northern Retail Sites would result in even MORE tax revenue for the State it was Grown in, Not to mention the State where it is eventually Sold In.
30 Years ago I seen some MONSTER Size Plants that were of Excellent Quality in the Everglades, Very Good Growing Conditions.
Win-Win Deal for all, Just Don`t try to tax my personal garden if I decide to grow a supply for just myself!
People are allowed to brew their own alcohol and grow their own tobacco, 99% Don`t, Why not? It`s Easier to just go to the Store!

  22. *It will now be interesting to watch the massive opposition effort that will be orchestrated by those who profit from prohibition.*
exactly why we must point out the huge error and offence in and of itself of the profit of prohibition and why the prohibitionist is more concerned about thier own paycheck than protecting us from ourselves. prohibitionists have become what they were supposed to fight if not worse.
Prohibition is a permanent perpetuation of the Problem it propogates.
    End Prohibition Now.

  23. Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground–everything that has the breath of life in it–I give every green plant for food.”

  24. I will only support WA.states initiative to legalize Cannabis IF IT ALLOWS FOR SMALL PERSONAL CULTIVATION, otherwise screw it.

  25. I hope that marijuana will finally have it’s day but I truly believe that the money will prevail to start a new war on marijuana, driven by the moralistic view that marijuana will cause deterioration of our society.
For the ones in control, there is simply too much at stake to let people have marijuana.
Legalization of marijuana I believe could spark a whole wave of lie exposing fact seeking that would expose the real lies that our leaders govern us with, such as wars, famine, aids and a number of other things that I believe are purposely created.
If this were ever to get out, there would be a genocide or our world leadership.

Interesting conclusion, when analyzing my own memories of history, I was public educated and greatly influence by TV. It would seem that a great part of the problem in the United States is with the quality of our leadership! Now, the question we must ask is why? Particularly when thinking in reference to the prior years outstanding leaders. Leaders who came forth and willingly lead, to the betterment of the common individual, within the United States of America as a family. Now! That the stage is clear. It seems that whenever the conservatives in this country gain influence and power, they use this voice to effect laws which put down Creative Thinking, using fear that the end of the world will result. Stemming our freedoms and any new and creative energies. Unless of course, the ideas go along with theirs. Hugh examples of this are Prohibition. Mad Mothers and Anti Smoking campaigns. Lets not forget the Drug War. Please do not make light of this War! The conservatives in this country and around the world. Whether Democrat, Republic, Christian or Moslem, are very interested in controlling your thoughts and beliefs. For as long as history was written or verbal stories passed down, the powerful have used the good in people to create fear and then use this fear to control those same people to their very own ends.
Lets you and I take heart and shake off that paranoid false fear, and take back this nation. Vote out these liars and thieves and all the other self-serving professional politicians. If we really all can come together the government will be forced to stop working for special interest groups, Big Business and Big Banks. This is my plan!
Considering this, I believe the Drug War to be one of the most effective tools use by our enemies (special interest groups, Big Business and Big Banks) to fragment and split the American landscape of new leadership and that great creative energy within the nation. I personally, am willing to take a change on Legalizing Marijuana and relaxed enforcement of Drugs in general, Alcohol inclusive. Those seemingly innocuous laws have effectively make the United States more vulnerable to foreign influences and is jeopardizing the security of this nation.
How about we, together, do a few simple things to improve this problem.
As a country lets start acting like were are the powerful nation we are ! What better way to show our strength then by starting a National Savings Program? I am talking about a National treasury that actually builds wealth through the tried and true method using the accumulations of earnings. Savings that on there own can never spent or borrowed against. This wealth in of itself would do a tremendous amount of good to the benefit of the people of these United States. Mind you the Banks and wealthy would specifically fight against this. Heaven forbid the Nation actual becomes wealthier then the banks and that the United States becomes self-sufficient! Why do you think the Banks and other Powerful influences worked so hard to do away with the Gold Standard? Only after the Gold Standard was gone could the Banks really exert control-using threats against our Nations cash flow. Oh come on is this that hard to believe? This could never happen if we had a national saving plan. Because then the Nation could be in control of how that wealth was used. This my family is the tool we need and must have to gain really freedom. Ask any person who has any wealth at all, if the wealth does not give them freedom.
Remember Banks and Wealth in itself has no morels, they are as a group and conglomerate unable to control them selves. Greed is that powerful! The point is we, as a group, must let go of the fear and paranoia , Bank and Big Business continues to push on to us through the news, TV and other electronic mean, i.e. the internet.
And get ride of this Drug War and then create program that brink us back together as a nation and family. We could actually build some wealth and power – the banks will never talk or tell you about.

  28. Here we go…the movement is unstoppable..Californians have spoken, medical marijuana is here to stay and we will make it stay and take full advantage of its medicinal properties legally…nobody is going to stop us now..as far as prohibition goes, I am not worried about it anymore, it will soon crumble under its own weight of lies and dirty tricks…the DEA will have to bite the bullet, leave us alone and shut the f##@ up once and for all.

  29. I’m not even from California, or USA, i’m from Brazil actually, and these news just made my day.
Having the chance of cannabis being legalized in such an important state and an important country is a huuge win towards legalization worldwide.
    way to go California (:

  30. I don’t really understand how people can bitch about “10 more months”. It has been such a long and difficult road to even get to this point and I can understand the impatience, but try to look at the bright side that this issue is finally getting out and change isn’t far.

  31. Californians will be firing all their professional elected politicians and replacing them with those individuals who will restore the power in California back to her people again. Our Golden State is about to be reborn into the 21st century and by starting out with a clean slate politically we feel we can do a better job. Our slogan: Don’t pout, don’t shout just vote them out!
On the issue of cannabis we will legalize it by vote this coming November ourselves because talking to the current political regime about legalization is like talking to a brick wall but in this case their wall will come tumbling down in November.

  32. The DEA site is still full of shit about cannabis, especially at this link:
    http://www.justice.gov/dea/marijuana_position.html
Is there a point by point refutation of their lies anywhere on the Internet that is easy to understand?
They don’t have my respect, and this new cow in charge doesn’t deserve the respectable image the DEA continues to enjoy in too large a percentage of the American public. Just as an active campaign to attack the credibility of the drug czar (Walters) was launched, the head of the DEA also is deserving of such a campaign. They need to be exposed for the fools, liars and opportunists that they are.
The song “Respectable” by Mel & Kim

  33. There was a time in this country when there was no illegal drug use. Looks like the government’s lies and massively failed prohibitionist war on drugs may finally be ending. If I can control what you put into your body, I own you. How is it American patriots allowed their God given, Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms and liberties to be violated by a few people who are not able to simply mind their own business? Prohibitionists must be put on trial for their crimes against humanity in a war of choice they started and continue to wage. Prohibitionists are war criminals.

  34. When i ran for Mayor of Eureka , California
( it was documented on KEET – TV so you know i am not lying ) i stated that the first step toward legalization of Marijuana will be regulating ( which comes later ) and taxing of
Marijuana . Effective March 1st all dispensaries in San Francisco will be paying a sales tax for sales of Cannabis .This will ( in effect ) virtually legalize Marijuana in S.F. . This is not in the news yet . As far as i know only myself , the dispensaries & City Officials know this & now i bring you the news. So sorry , D.A.T. .
With everybodys help i believe we shut down Gene Burn’s show on KGO Radio in which on Saturday’s he promoted the sales of alcoholic beverages . He hasn’t been on in weeks .Today he was again replaced with another commentator . It was so nice to hear somebody not talk about how booze is so great for a change & frankly i quit listening to this drug pusher weeks ago . Just tuned in briefly today………
Working with MADD & Officials in Mendocino & Sonoma Counties we have gotten ( i think ) all the Billboards & signs along US 101 promoting Alcoholic beverages
( mostly beer ) removed . I saw none on my last drive up to Humboldt County . Hope you enjoyed –
    That’s all Folks !

  35. When and if the rest of the U.S.A. sees how California is profiting from this new tax ( Ha Ha we were first ) from Weed sales it should be all downhill from here & the rest of America will without a doubt follow our
lead . In other words………..profit or lose .
Hello Brazil , what a wonderful Country you are filled with beautiful people !
Always nice hearing from you & people of all
    Countries .

  36. OK OK last comment .
Gene Burns , your an excellent Broadcaster and you do a great show . You work for the finest Radio Station on the West coast , KGO Radio . You are losing listeners by promoting the consumption of alcoholic beverages . What you make in sponsorship is not worth losing in listenership . Your sending the wrong message to people in all walks of life . Your one heck of a fine indivdual but please stop pushing this deadly Drug .
    May God Bless ,
