Airport Screening Machines and Marijuana: Good Catches?

From December 26 Washington Post: “The full-body scanners in use at 78 U.S. airports can detect small amounts of contraband and hidden weapons, all while producing controversial images of travelers.

The “good catches,” federal officials say, have largely gone unnoticed amid the criticism that erupted over the ghostly X-rays and “enhanced” pat downs. The Transportation Security Administration, which intensified airport screening last month, points to several successes: small amounts of marijuana wrapped in baggies, other drugs stitched inside underwear, ceramic knives concealed in shirt pockets.”

Check out photos of airline travelers busted for cannabis here.

With over 1,000 of these high tech scanning devices deployed at airports by our Reefer Madness-loving federal government, cannabis consumers need to pay special attention when attempting to travel with their medical or recreational cannabis supply.

Question: Do you feel safer knowing that the feds are spending billions annually on technology that is largely used on busting passengers with small amounts of a dried vegetable matter that possesses strong healing and mild psychotropic properties?

Answer: I’ll bet hip-hop legend Kurtis Blow doesn’t feel any safer after getting popped by TSA scanners for a little bit of ganja earlier this month.

  1. DO NOT KEEP CONTRABAND ON YOUR PERSON. You can safely keep personal use amounts in your checked luggage using a variety of easy/basic methods. I safely travel even on international flights this way. I repeat, DO NOT KEEP IT ON YOUR PERSON WHEN YOU FLY. It is NOT safe. FUCK the TSA.

And on another note. The DEA has been WikiLeaked. Hoping for a NORML write-up. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/26/world/26wikidrugs.html?_r=2&hp

  2. I went on a vacation to Jamaica in June 2010.

On my return trip from Montego Bay, I was selected for extra screening. I went through this process four times.

After the metal detector/xray, I was taken into a side room and my person and belongings were hand searched. Intrusive, but no big deal.

At the gate for a large American Airline, I was subjected to a second search in the jetway between the ticket taker and the plane. At that point a marijuana seed or seeds were allegedly found in my belongings… by a PRIVATE security guard.

The Airline gate manager called the police who eventually showed up 30 minutes later. The plane would have left early, but now was going to leave late.

My bags were pulled off of the plane and hand searched. They were very full, and when the “thorough search of my belongings was completed, the police officers had a hard time zipping one of my bags closed. Now I want to point out that two police officers hand searched my two bags. One had even done a very through search of a backpack contained in one of them, and the 15 or so small places something could have been hidden in. The officer that had just finished checking the backpack asked if I could carry the backpack that was in the bag that wouldn’t zip. I refused. I got a very dirty look. She attempted to hand it to me again. I asked if she was joking. She said no and continued to stare me down while holding the backpack for me to take.

I then pointed out what a joke this whole process was, because in the backpack that they were attempting to hand me were various pointy objects including pocket knives, scissors anything else I couldn’t carry on a plane. Apparently, marijuana seeds were a threat to air travel, but knives were not… at that moment.

They then asked if I could help them zip up the bag, which I did while continuing to point out what an idiotic search and waste of time and effort this was, all spawned by a PRIVATE security guard for a large American Airline.

    Feel safer? I sure don’t.

  3. I made this video and was all over this topic a month ago, but a lot of people said I was crazy. Turns out I was dead on balls accurate. Watch please.

  4. There is growing research that shows these machines doing damage to DNA strands by agitating DNA to the point where it causes air gaps in DNA… (something we have no idea of long term side effects)

Look it up for yourself. These are BS and I will refuse to walk through them. If that means I can no longer fly, then oh well.

  5. Good reasons to plan more spaciously and take a train– or failing that, bus. This occasion of choosing slower but more snoopproof transport might be a good time for you to go on line and gather some suggestions and instructions for creative crafts handwork you can do on board to use the travel time productively (even processing some parts to make into one-hitters). While headphoning Willie Nelson cuts of course.

This catching travelers with little bits of ganja might, as some suggested above, be the main motivation for the increased searching. Don’t forget, the Govt. is clutching for the last few years of $30-bil./year nicotine $igarette tax money which will decline sharply once the drug war collapses, ganja is legalized, and one-hitters and vaporizers forever supplant concealable hot burning overdose $igarette paper. Keep track of what politicians are up to, especially what advice John Boehner is getting about cannabis from his advisors John H. Fish from R. J. Reynolds and Gates from Altria/Philip Morris.

  6. liberal, politically correct, take away our rights and freedoms bullshit…. If a dog bit someone you don’t search all the cats so the dogs don’t feel bad…

  7. Two years ago I was traveling from Tampa Airport to Laguardia NY. I put 5 grams of marijuana in a baggie and then proceeded to tape it up to form a ball of tape with marijuana inside. Then I taped it to my testicles, wore sweat pants and proceeded to the airport.
When I went through, I was picked for random extra security screening. At the time, Tampa was one of the few airports that had an x-ray machine. They put me through that and I thought I was about to get arrested for sure. I almost put my arms up the air as I was coming out saying “arrest me”. But the guy greeted me with a smile and put me on my way. I was 18 years old at the time and would’ve been stereotyped by most as the “opposite” of a “criminal”. I believe they either didn’t want to arrest me for such a petty crime, or the machine didn’t detect it. What was it?

Either way, I’m so happy I wasn’t arrested that day 🙂

  8. IF you have your medical card in Cali they will let you go.. I should know… happened to me in San Fran. They took pictures of it and let me have it back and said have a nice flight… No joke. Curtis Blow is just an ignorant ass…

  9. Who was the one that decided lieing was their job requirement. One good way to stop terrorists might be to defund them. Our motors were designed to run on biomass fuels. Gasoline when it comes off the tower won’t burn. They add alcohol for it to ignite. The war on drugs just gives them more. They cry the children. To what they say I say So What. Show me a body. George Washington wrote Here I sit with my hands as tied behind my back watching honest citizens being arrested for harvesting hemp. There is so much proof from hemp to pot that hemp laws are treason against the people.

  10. Well!!! you’ve finally gone and done it – you’ve left me totally speachless. What more could I possibly have to say, except to say WTF. God save us all.

  11. To expand on what Brian said in the first post, my friend once had his checked bag searched by the TSA and they left a note inside telling him that they did. They didn’t even find the 6 joints that he had in a bag.

It would seem to be safe to put small amounts in a checked bag as long as you hide it slightly. The random hand searches they do of the checked bags are obviously not thorough, as evidenced by what happened to my friend.

  12. The American Pepole are not livestock to be herded around, x-ray scaned, molested, and tested for purity and saftey.

  13. 5. Nic

They don’t want your soul – they want that scan of your body so they can add it to your DNA, your finger prints, your social security number, and your dosier.

    7. Cobb

They used to call them internment camps. Now they call them residences. WTF – bobbed wire is bobbed wire.

  14. To whom it may concern,

We are free Americans – and – we believe in God and country, life and liberty. We don’t have to ask for the abolition of the prohibition of cannabis – “it’s ours” – and – has been ours since the beginning of time. We claim it under the laws of nature and Nature’s God. We have absolutely no recollection of “ever” acquiescing to any law prohibiting it. It’s absolute conjecture and speculation on the part of government to suggest that we would “ever” acquiesce to any such notion. The mere assumption that we would, is at the very least, incomprehensible – and – at the very most, delusional. We have set our faces against tyranny – and – made the most succinct statement for which we are prepared to defend. There’s no question [but that] what we resent the most is government pissing our resouces down the drain trying to defeat the unbeatable foe. This simply escapes logic and reason. So we say – “there must be a motive to this madness that eludes us all,” who unlike government, have good sense.

  15. It wont be long before we start seeing these at all mass transit areas. Then we will see them on the streets. Anyone seen the movie 1984? TSA the new SS.

  16. If this is what America has become – then I’m considering it to be a failed experiment. What is up with forcing people to be exposed to something that is potentially very dangerous all the while looking for something that isn’t… The TSA is a totally failed organization and continuing to fund it is insane; as is the continued funding of the DEA – both are utter failures! Oh, and any Senator or Congressman who believes otherwise is also a failure in my judgement!

  17. WOW, can we SUE em if they take pic of our PENIS? thas against the law they have nude pic of me without my permission.

  18. that’s big brother for ya. they have to show just how big of a holes they can be. yet on the other hand there just as corrected as the mob. this country going to hell in a hand basket. we the people have to stand up and fight for are wrights and stop this b.s.

  19. I’m afraid the age of the Airplane has passed, and the Car is now the only feasible mode of transportation due to the fascism & paranoia of our Sick, Mentally Unhinged Government that seeks to Sexually Molest its own citizens. Sending people to Jail for Marijuana is wrong and a symptom of our government’s incompetence and insanity.

  20. 25 Nick

They don’t care about your penis – but – what they do care about is identifying parts/markss of your body. It is an x ray. It’s like looking for tatoos inside your body.

  21. This is final confirmation that the War of Drugs and the War of Terror have officially merged in their entirety. Next up — minor possession of marijuana will be considered “acts of terrorism”, with indefinite detention sans habeous corpus for those caught. The only thing missing from this new reality — a declaration of martial law and the suspension of elections. Wait for it. Watch for it. It is coming …

Welcome to the fascist USSA. The jack-booted goose-stepping police state of “Nineteen Eighty-Four” has arrived.

  22. Recreational use – what a farce!!! Cannabis has been a vital factor for medical and religious use since the “Sixth Day.” Define “recreational.” Is it someone having fun? Life was made for the “pure enjoyment of living,” and anything else is a sin. If one is sick, one has medicinal use. If one is religious, one has Sacrament. If one is having “recreation,” someone is bound to say “No! you can’t have fun!” Say that to yourself three times and [then] tell me how free you feel. Ba! ba! ba! is a feeling one should re-think.

  23. You have 3 choices

    The easy way is suicide

The second choice requires you to stand up

The third choice shoot the bastards

  24. “If this is what America has become – then I’m considering it to be a failed experiment.” i say to you that this is the Test!, this is the moment as to it being a failure or it truly works. It only when we have tyrants like today that we can test the full meassure of this experiment. What is the experiment you talk of? If it be Liberty, freedom, and our Pursuit of Happiness, then I am with you but do not thin for one moment it is a failure, it is only a failure when We, the people give up on liberty, it is in our hearts and freedom runs through our blood. It is when We give up that it becomes a failure.
Today more than ever this experiment of All people being free and equal, having certain rights given to them by God, not men. Our last line of defense I tell you and all who read this, it simply, Nullify the Law on cannabis. Simply, don’t run from jury duty, but step up for it, shut your mouth, get on, don’t convict. jam the jury, teach jury to nullify the law from within the jury room. Get in and defy the law and it shall not harm us any longer. We all can act simple and direct by why of a responsible juror and do the right thing, which in this case is clearly not the law. Please my friends do not give up but dig in. Demand your rights, stop the unjust law in it’s tracks. Hell let them write another and we can it the same way, defy the law is in itself a peaceful non-complaince with an unjust law or attack on liberty.

  25. after while we will not be able 2 sit down in a public restroom because of the fear of something being missed, our piss will have 2 b able 2 c what our shit do. and the shit will have 2 watch our piss. and blinking our eyes while be a crime b/c we will not be a good neighbor hood watchman.

  26. THE CRIMINAL CHARGE is: Constructive Fraud and Conspiracy to Defraud. THE CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATION and CLAIM of HARM: Denial of Secured Inalienable Rights of the People to use plants scientifically known as Cannabis. Mr. Harry J. Anslinger, while acting as an agent for the Federal Government and under the Federal government’s oath of office, did, along with other agents of the States and Federal governments did willfully enter into a conspiracy to defraud the American public and wantonly committed a Constructive Fraud against the Secured Inalienable Rights of the People of these United States. Mr. Anslinger and his co-conspirators perpetrated this act upon the People of these United States and their United States Congressional representatives as early as 1913 for the sole purpose “ to impair or injure public interest” by seeking congressional abrogation of rights secured by the people in their uses of the cannabis plant to: use to advance medical science, as a traditional medicine, as an original ingredient in the Christian holy sacrament oil, or as a valuable and important agricultural crop that competes with the fuel, wood, paper, and clothing industries.
The Legislative Branch of the United States, sitting past & present, lacked and continues to lacks the constitutional privilege granted to Congress in the adoption of the United States Constitution which gave them power to abrogate the natural inalienable rights secured by the people for the safety and welfare of the nation. The U.S. Legislative branch has to hold creditable hearings and reviewed valid readily reproducible evidence which is publicly transparent and self-evident, It must show that our nation’s health and or welfare would be, or is, negatively effected should the United States peoples’ continue to execute such natural inalienable right of access to the cannabis. Failure to provide these hearings and reviews, or falsifying the information does not secure the legislatures right to abrogate the use of the Cannabis plant. Absent of these reasonable conditions Congress can not, may not use it’s privilege or powers to abrogate the United States Constitutional Rights secured by the people.
The Harrison Narcotics Act – 63rd US Congress (1914), the Marihuana Tax Act – 75th US Congress (1937), and the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act – 91st US Congress (1970) are based on a Constructive Fraud which removes the Legislatures from having the power to abrogate rights secured by the people. Where these acts include the Cannabis Plant are null and void because they represent legislation created outside the legislatures powers and therefore unconstitutional.
It is only upon creditable hearings and the reasonable presentation of scientific evidence which presents a valid social claim, and or an individual claim of harm that negatively impacts upon the whole, or part of, the Nation’s people does Congress have the responsibility to secure the nation’s health and welfare by use of it’s congressional privilege or power of abrogations by due process to secure said health and welfare of this Nation. But no U.S. Legislative body, past or present, has the congressional privilege or power to abrogate the natural inalienable rights secured in the United States people based on distortions of facts, fanciful conjecture, and the intentional misleading of medical and legal information. No where in the people’s founding contact adopted by the people and sworn to by this elected government does it allow deception, criminal and civil acts of fraud, an intentional misinformation, purposely tainted testimony, and the denial of any and all expert testimonies as bases for granting any elected and sworn U.S. Legislative body present or past with the misuse of it’s privilege or power of abrogation which would allow the outlawing of the inalienable rights secured by the peoples’ of these United States without having the proper due process of law and legislative procedures.
Therefore the foundation laid in Congress to abrogate the natural inalienable rights of the people lacked any and still lacks any supportive evident that the cannabis plant is or was ever a safety issue which could negatively impacted the health and welfare of the American Society, in part or as a whole. Furthermore, the U.S. Congress did not, can not, and still does not have the privilege or power granted in the United States Constitution to write any such legislation that would abrogate the American people from their natural inalienable rights to use the cannabis planet for reason of traditional medicine, or as a traditional food supplement, as an alternative fuel source, for the making of clothing, used as a replacement for wood, used in the making of traditional paper, and or for the peoples’ ancient spiritual, religious, or cultural practices. The first ten amendments of the United States Constitution protect and secure the inalienable rights of the people from government encroachments.

FYI – if you didn’t already know – in California, it’s an infraction of the law – and – the offender receives a citation [Ticket], and a fine of $100.00. This, all thankful to, “Arnold” – his parting gift to us. Thank you “Arnold.”

If you have a medical recommendation, you can possess and transport an amount required to meet your current medical need [up to a constant eight ounces].

Prop.19 failed because the government isn’t sophisticated enough to receive the public’s trust – with tricks like the feds threatening to pursue federal charges if the bill passed. They didn’t care what California [sovereign] said. That shook a whole bunch of “fence riders” off the fence. Back to safety of the yard. The favorable after polls still had the feild.

  28. Holy Smokes. Good catch? I would say not. It does go to show that the government (TSA) has in mind a lot more then to protect us for safe travel. I suggest you not carry any “contraband” if you are a toker. Just find a high school kid in the city you land and they can score you a dime in less than an hour. Problem solved.

  29. Unless you plan to travel with a large stash, here’s an option. Buy a bottle of Tylenol or some other inexpensive pills (generic brands are always cheaper); take the pills out of the bottle; put your stash in the the bottom of the bottle and return the pills back in. If the stash is skunk you want to wrap it well. It’s a pretty safe way to go.

  30. I’ve travel’da bunch with edibles .. my medicine.. I’ve never had a problem. I slip it in a safe place as your medicne should always be safe.

  31. Is it safe to smuggle High quality weed from the US to South America? do they check ur bags leaving the US?

  32. Tincture is the way to go for travel! Either in bottles with a diversionary label or transferred into Gelatin Caps mixed in with your vitamens.

  33. I DON’TTHINK I’LL GET A RESPONSE TONIGHT, BUT HOPEFULLY BY EARLY MORNING:: I’M FLYING TO BALTIMORE MD. MY DAUGHTER WAS PUT ON LIFE SUPPORT AND MY SMOKE HELPS WITH MY ANXIETY. MY CERTIFICATION HAS EXPIRED BUT I STILL GET IT. SUGGESTION::: triple wrapped heavy foil, put into a square inch ziplock bag with a drawstring. Take a page out of a magazine that has perfume samples and take some pieces of it and it disguises the smell. AND then, I’d put it in my vajajay (LOL) Thank you for any help asap,.

  34. Just fly with it. I do it all the time as a business traveler. Just don’t go concealing in in things like plastic bags and tin foil. That is the stupid idea. Regardless of how skunk it is it is way less recognized when it’s not wrapped in something that screams I am a drug. Cram a couple of nugs in the insole of a shoe or hiking boot along with some dirt and vegetation debris and go right through screening. Don’t ever let it out of your control. If small nugs are in your shoe you can easily get to the and dump them on the ground if you are freaked out. Can’t do that so easily with a plastic bag or tin foil. Just drop the nugs on the ground and they look like harmless trash. You won’t have to do this anyway because I never have. Flown with ounces over the years traveling on planes every week. Never busted. Just relax and go through. Have also done the following: put nugs in a Skoal mint can mixed with dip, put nugs in my lip like it was dip, held nugs in my hand while walking through, put a bug under my class ring and walked through, all work and I can quickly dump the weed if there are no problems. Better to hide weed in plain sight.

  38. Traveling to Vegas in a couple days and was wondering what the best way to sneak past security with the dank was..
-hide inside the tube of a deodorant bottle without bags (checked baggage)
-sole of my shoe flattened (wearing them or have it in carry on)
Can the explosive detectors or X-rays see weed if there’s no bag?
