Cannabis Inhalation Associated With Spontaneous Tumor Regression, Study Says

[Editor’s note: This post is excerpted from this week’s forthcoming NORML weekly media advisory. To read more about the anticancer properties of cannabinoids, please see NORML’s literature review here.] Cannabis inhalation is associated with spontaneous brain tumor regression in two subjects, according to a pair of case reports to be published in Child’s Nervous System, the official journal of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery.
Investigators at the British Columbia Children’s Hospital in Vancouver documented the mitigation of residual tumors in two adolescent subjects who regularly inhaled cannabis. Authors determined that both subjects experienced a “clear regression” of their residual brain tumors over a three-year-period.
“Neither patient received any conventional adjuvant treatment” during this time period, investigators wrote. “The tumors regressed over the same period of time that cannabis was consumed via inhalation, raising the possibility that cannabis played a role in tumor regression.”
Researchers concluded, “Further research may be appropriate to elucidate the increasingly recognized effect of cannabis/cannabinoids on gliomas (brain cancers).”
A 2006 pilot study published in the British Journal of Cancer previously reported that the intratumoral administration of the cannabinoid THC was associated with reduced tumor cell proliferation in two of nine human subjects with brain cancer.
Separate preclinical studies assessing the anticancer activity of cannabinoids and endocannabinoids indicate that the substances can inhibit the proliferation of various types of cancerous cells, including breast carcinoma, prostate carcinoma, and lung cancer.
Commenting on the two new case reports, researcher Jahan Marcu — who has previously documented the inhibitory effects of cannabinoids on human glioblastoma cell proliferation and survival — wrote in the blog Freedom Is Green: “Can marijuana contribute to the regression or remission of certain cancers? Given the slow progress of clinical trials for whole plant Cannabis, it can be frustrating waiting for years, even decades, trying to answer these vital questions. But for the two young women with brain cancer in (this) report, a shift to a cannabis lifestyle may have made a difference.”

  1. Current situation with cannabis/medicinal cannabis legalization shows that the dangerous philosophies of “radical pragmatism”, shared by both Marxists and Nazis, are well and alive in contemporary America when it comes to anti-cannabis policies! The extremists currently in charge of the DEA will stop at nothing to derail the medicinal cannabis program and the Will of Voters who voted for it. I wish I could see the day when the senseless and shameful witch-hunts against citizens over a natural medicinal plant cannabis finally end, and they will! I predicted a long time ago that anti-cannabis repression will lead to increased hard drug and alcohol abuse because they are not “easily” detected in random drug screens, especially when it comes to the “window” of their detection. All these so-called “random drug screens” unfairly target the users of the safest substance of them all – cannabis! I can’t wait to see the day when these shameful and senseless witch-hunts against citizens in connection with cannabis medicinal plant will stop altogether. I stressed many times already that no system, no matter of how repressive, can survive on a series of “un-realities”. Current undisguised assault by the “radical pragmatists” from the DEA on the will of the people of Montana (and now also Hollywood) demonstrate their delusional thinking their attempts in suppression science (and people’s will) will be more successful than those of Inquisition, Gestapo, or KGB! I wish I could live to see these people’s miserable and disgraceful failure! Everything that the DEA and its allies use to intimidate citizens (and politicians) about the remarkable cannabis plant is based on unreality: cannabis is NOT physically addictive, the so-called “gateway drug theory” is NOT scientifically valid, smoking cannabis does NOT lead to increase in the risk of lung cancer, legalization in other countries did NOT lead to increased cannabis use, and in addition it is proven that cannabis use suppresses violent behavior. To claim that drug Marinol is the same as medicinal cannabis is to make yet another break from reality. Cannabis is immeasurably safer than alcohol, (and most currently used prescription drugs – do we even notice their devastating potential side effects at their TV commercials?), and be so ignorant as to say that cannabis plant does not have medicinal value is to be out of touch with “reality” altogether. Legalization of medicinal cannabis is non-partisan because all of us can get sick and be able to take advantage of its remarkable medicinal properties. Let’s reject the prohibitionist fear-tactics as they have no substance to them, and legalize cannabis in all 50 States without further delay!

  2. I would share this but if you need to access all my facebook info to do it, I guess people want be informed by me.

  3. Well, there goes the old ” Doing it for the safety of our children” arguement. A. What could be more beneficial than a substance that literally can not be over-dosed? B. Which leads me to believe that if you are fighting a tumor by means of Cannabis consumption–then you would not have to worry about over-medicating in order to beat the tumor. C. Therefore allowing the mrdication(cannabis), to kick cancer-@ss faster & with less down time in between treatments(since the body isn’t spending time recouping from radiation/toxins). Which also means the tumor has less time to rebound before the next wave of medication is sent in to fight.
    A leads to B, leads to C.

  4. NORML,
This is great news. But I’m a little worried… if a study showed the opposite, would you post it? It’s getting hard to tell whether cannabis is really a purely benevolent miracle drug, or whether my sources of cannabis news are completely biased…

  5. With the Increase of Evidence of Positive health benefits, and the increased evidence of the harms of Prohibition I think it is time to put together a complete documentary about the total cost of continued prohibition. All of it, Let’s really ramp up the debate among ourselves and if the government jumps in great, But I say it is no longer necessary for them to be here. Let their actions or the lack thereof speak for them.

  6. Hmmmmm. This got me thinking. I know there are many probable benefits (and many more PROVEN benefits) from using cannabis. Particularly regarding cancer(s).
With the problems the Japanese are having with the release of radiation from their nuclear power plants, and the near certainty of even more leaking, there will undoubtedly be many cases of cancer eventually linked to their situation.
Why not connect the dots? Let’s send some MEDICAL cannabis to the Japanese. I’m sure growers would be able (and more than willing) to dedicate at least a plant or two to the effort. Let’s send enough so that those that want to use it for MEDICAL reasons have a supply to do just that.
The US government should relax the restrictions on, (or flat out legalize) cannabis. This is a HUMANITARIAN relief effort. Let our planters plant. Let our growers grow. To refuse this is to refuse to provide humanitarian relief to another nation in a time of national crisis. (Depending on how bad this gets, it could in fact be a worldwide crisis).
Just say it’s OK, and give us an address in Japan to send our ‘relief’ medication to. We can handle the rest. There would be NO COST to EITHER of our governments. A true humanitarian effort by true humanitarians.
Will our government give us the OK to help? Or will they ignore the evidence, and condemn the Japanese people to a life with cancer? Heck, if they’d let them plant even JUST hemp in Japan, that would absorb the radiation on and in the soil.
My question is, ‘what is it going to take?’. Do we need to watch thousands and thousands of people die now and in the future, because our government has an illegal and unsubstantiated view of cannabis?
Well, it’s worked for the last 70 years, so why not deny the sick and dying one of the safest and arguably most effective medicines on the planet?
The majority of our politicians don’t care. After all, it isn’t THEIR kids that will be getting sick and dying. I guarantee you, if it were, cannabis would suddenly be legal!
    My 2¢.

  7. I have said it before and I will say it again.
There is a dirrect corrilation between making cannabis illegal in the early 1900’s and the sudden rise in cancers since then.
But this part is speculation. That above statement could be the reason the federal govt refuses to acknowledge their mistake for fear of a nation wide class action suit on behalf of those who have died in great pain over their selfish law that was enacted in the self interest of a politician who just happened to own a foresty buisness.
Once again, corporate america has screwed the little guy.

  8. Marijuana helps with with all sorts of medical issues and can replace many items we market to be environmentally safe.I will admit it is also a pleasure and stress reliever. The big question here is how are we going to reveal to the world those who purposely demonize marijuana or demonize/glorify anything and everything to manipulate the general population so the financial elite stay in control.

  10. Ok now this bit of cancer talk I expect to make the news cycle, for every other C causing n curing subsatnace has been through,if it doesn’t then proof positive that mainstream media is bought out by greed, gonna be hard for them not to blab about it bc any marijuna talk usally measures high on any viewers radar.

  11. The thing that I always found fascinating is the fact that we have cannabinoid receptors in our brain. Places that are just waiting to be charged.

  12. My fear about this kind of news is that Big Pharma will see this as further reason to keep the plant illegal while they continue to isolate and patent it’s miracle compounds… Ironically, the more amzazing it’s medical properties are found to be, the more the rich and powerful will want to be the ones to control it… They don’t seem to care who gets hurt if they get even richer.
That’s the way I see it!

  13. I am extremely surprised to read about smoked cannabis being effective at treating cancer. It’s remarkable that with such a low concentration of relatively low quality cannabinoids (as they have been overheated with pure flame), it could actually be effective against cancer.
With results like these, it should come as a surprise to nobody that people are actually curing cancer with ingested, high-concentration cannabis oil, which is the true way to use cannabis medicine. Cannabis extracts cure cancer and other diseases!!

  14. Quell surprise. Cannabis Sativa is|was the Tree of Life. Evidence keeps mounting that not only the DEA’s “green-lighting” of Big Pharma-approved extracts of cannabis is “medicinal”, but even a patient’s use of smoked cannabis heals — from pain mitigation to the shrinking of cancerous tumors. It says a lot that smoked cannabis is indeed an effective treatment for asthma.
Our Federal government has known since the mid-1970’s that cannabis cures cancers. And while the USA government itself holds patents (#6630507) on the medicinal application of cannabis extracts, the Feds continue to propagandize against there being any medical benefit of cannabis, smoked or otherwise.
The number of the victims of this concerted Federal government persecution and prohibition of cannabis through either denial of medical benefit or imprisonment must be in the 10’s of millions. That this was done consciously and with evident malice aforethought, in collusion with crony corporate special interests, is the equivalent of war (on|of drugs) crimes and crimes against humanity. Dr. Mengele, of Nazi Death Camp infamy, would be proud of his American “cousins”. It is long past time to end this American war on people, the American people.

  15. I have m.s. for many years I tried prescription meds. Nothing seemed to work.About 4 years ago I asked my doctor to let me use marijuana. After almost 11 years I have begun to gain feeling back. My headaches are fewer. I have only taken medical marijuana so it must be part of the reason for my nerves healing. What if the government really is just trying to keep us on thier drugs so that they can capitalize. OH RIGHT THEY HAVE ALREADY

  16. Ok. Cannabis is the creators best gift to humans. Every animal has an endocannabinoid system, and theses endocannabinoid receptors actually make up the MOST DENSE RECEPTORS not just in our brain, but in our entire body. Therefore I must conclude that since no other plant has these cannabinoids, that there must be some sort of intelligent design going on, because this endocannabinoid system functions everything we do. We the people must DEMAND our corrupt government that this gift of god must be fully legalized, and utilized. We must fight for what is really truly intended for us. We must believe in what is real. And the real fact here is that we I will die trying to make this world an honest, pure, divine, trustworthy, loyal, intelligent, spiritual, beautiful world. Cannabis is what we need to change the planet. Our consciousness will allow us to achieve this. We must visualize with our third eye, focus our minds on removing all the negativity of this planet, and replacing it with our creators power, knowledge, wisdom, understand, and gifts. Cannabis is gods best gift to man.

  17. For more information on the anti-cancer effects of cannabis, and much more, run a search for “Granny Storm Crow’s MMJ Reference List”. It’s a free collection of links to MMJ studies, and news articles about the studies. I think you’ll be amazed just how much our little herbal medicine can do!
And great info, as always, Paul!

  18. All this means is that big pharma is hungry to make money from Cannabis and the report is simply a justification. Can you say rumble stiltskin!!!

  19. I am interested in growing a hemp plant. I want to grow it purely for its beauty and would love to add it to my collection of plants. I know medical marijuana can be grown in accordance to the laws, but what about hemp? Where can I obtain seeds that have not been sterilized? I can buy hemp and consume hemp, but cant grow it? Any suggestions?
