The Feds Finally Recognize The Anti-Cancer Potential Of Cannabis — 36 Years Too Late!

Scientific trials have for decades documented the anti-cancer properties of cannabis and its constituents. Yet it took until this week for the website of the National Institute of Cancer, a component of the U.S. government’s National Institutes of Health, to finally acknowledged the herb’s therapeutic utility for patients living with disease or suffering from the adverse side-effects of cancer treatment.
In a newly added section to the website, entitled ‘Cannabis and Cannabinoids,’ the Institute states:

Cannabinoids may cause antitumor effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death.”
…The potential benefits of medicinal cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect.”

It’s a stunning acknowledgment, given that the NIH is a branch of the very same government that presently maintains that the cannabis plant and all of its naturally-derived components have ‘no accepted medical use.’ Yet it also begs the question: Where has the National Institute of Cancer been all these years?
After all, the anti-tumor activity of cannabinoids were initially documented in 1975! That’s right; it’s taken 36 years for the Institute to get with the program.
Hopefully it won’t take them another 36 years to demand that the Feds finally assess whether these preclinical results are replicable in human trials.

  1. Holy Smokes. Michelle Leonhart and Eric Holder must now act to remove the Schedule I status of cannabis (a.k.a. marijuana). These findings are encouraging and need to help fuel the end of this insane prohibition. The DEA is bieng used as the police agency for the world by the United States Government. It’s time to end the schrade. God Bless.

  2. As encouraging as this news sounds at first, I smell a load of BULLSHIT that will follow…
    Anyone here know about U.S. Patent # 6630507 ?
The only reason they’re admitting to this now is because they’re rolling up their sleeves, getting ready to make money from it. In other words, they’re going to put it in a pill and charge us for it.
You honestly think you can trust the feds now?!?!?

  3. @51: Holy What?
Seriously, after this movement, the “other shoe” is to admit Harm Reduction Utensils exist (and can be substituted for the #1 killer which is NOT TOBACCO BUT THE $IGARETTE.
    1. The one thing keeping Big 2WackGo (i.e. $igarette companies) alive today is the failure to popularize vaporizers, e-cigarettes, and little one-hitter pipes worldwide fast enough. Once all hot burning overdose nicotine addicts have switched from $igarettes (which burn at 700-C.) to 25-mg.-per-lightup single toke utensils, those companies will be making 1/15 as much money and won’t have any money left over to bribe Republican politicians to fight for prohibition of cannabis.
    2. The main thing keeping Dosage Reduction Utensils rare and/or de facto illegal is cannabis prohibition– usually coupled with license for any rogue cop to accuse you of lawbreaking (cannabis) because you are found to possess a Harm Reducvtion Utensil. Worse, your parents, if they find one, may panic and disown you as a traitor to their old age security which depends on you getting a high pay drug test job and making a ton of money. So out there across America and much of the world, almost every kiffer is afraid to own a utensil and rolls hot burning THC-destroying carbon monoxide joints instead.
    3. So now it’s time for the NIC to get serious about investigating VAPORIZER et al. as a solution to the “SMOKING”-related alleged cannabis hazards, and when they find cannabis vaporized properly is safe and appropriate, to admit it and take action to promote total replacement of genocidal hot burning overdose paper with Downdosage Revolution Devices.
    4. Any one-hitter, however cheap (see Wikipedia), is a vaporizer. Get instructions “how to make pipes out of everyday objects” (wikiHow) in the hands of handworky tinkerers in every neighborhood. Every humble little piece of wood or metal may then be our best soldier in the War Against Cancer.
PS. Now nine months since a CANNABINOID E-CIGARETTE was announced in and only for Los Angeles. Any action lately on getting this technology to ALL CANNABIS USERS worldwide? Or does somebody want to “keep cannabis harmful” in order to justify fending off its threat to the tobacco oligarchy?

  4. I think that to systematically thwart the advancement of any medical science is a crime against humanity.

  5. How long do you think the FEDS are going to cover the real truth about marijuana with a ORWELLIAN AND TOTALITARIAN MENTALITY OF REEFER MADNESS. When the real truth comes out about marijuana the BARBARIANS AT THE GATE OF MARIJUANA PROHIBITION are starting to dwindle and trying to circumnavigate our rights around the CONSTITUTION with FEDERAL LAW MENTALITY. It’s not 36 years late but more like when MARIJUANA PROHIBITION has been implemented in our CONSTITION and thousands of years beyond that in earlier cultures. The NIC are starting to come out of denial but BIG PHARMA and the FDA seem to have other plans to corner the market on how marijuana should be ingested and it sounds like more FEDERALISM to me. The NEW WORLD ORDER IS HERE!

  6. Why cant they get with the program, my wife is battling cancer and you would not know how the treatments tear people them up mentally as well as physically, any thing that would ease the pain and suffering I am all for it.Its time for the government to pull their heads out of their butts and realize that it has good effects to those thats suffering eith this illness!!!

  7. I excitedly clicked your link to the “newly added section” of the National Cancer Institute expecting to find this great news, only to be extremely disappointing to find the same old lies published in the very first sentience…
“Cannabis, also known as marijuana, originated in Central Asia but is grown worldwide today. In the United States, it is a controlled substance and is classified as a Schedule I agent (a drug with increased potential for abuse and no known medical use). ”
I had to dig for the words that you quoted and disappointed again to find that you left out the beginning…
    Under “Antitumor Effects”
“One study in mice and rats suggested…..”
The lengthy 12 paged BS contained the following statements…
“No clinical trials of Cannabis as a treatment for cancer in humans were identified in a PubMed search.”
“No published studies have explored the effect of inhaled Cannabis on appetite in cancer patients.”
“In clinical trials of Cannabis, euphoria is often scored as an adverse effect.[1,2]”
“At present, there is insufficient evidence to recommend inhaling Cannabis as a treatment for cancer-related symptoms or cancer treatment–related side effects outside the context of well-designed clinical trials.”
The biased article did state that two synthetic forms of THC “are effective in the treatment of N/V induced by chemotherapy.[9-12]”
“The researchers reported that patients who used nabilone experienced improved management of pain, nausea, anxiety, and distress when compared with untreated patients. ”
This “new” information posted by the feds actually slams marijuana and perpetuates the anti-marijuana propaganda that has been espoused for decades by the federal prohibitionists. In fact, it gives them further justification in this “new’ carefully crafted propaganda ploy to keep marijuana a schedule 1 criminal “substance”.
On the other hand, it simply plays into big pharma and their synthetic THC pills.
I think you guys are asleep at the wheel.
[Editor’s note: Asleep at the wheel, or ever vigilant for 40 years? What is notable about the NCI acknowledging cannabis’ therapeutic properties is that as little as 3 years ago the federal government (notably DEA, ONDCP, NIDA, etc…) would not yield any ground–insisting cannabis is hardly more than ‘Cheech and Chong’ pseudo medicine. No more post this NCI bulletin. No more.]

  8. # aaron…you’re right..at this moment fda and dea are working to get only parts of the plant changed to schedule I, but want to leave the plant as a whole illegal to use or possess

  9. “It’s never too late! – NEVER.”
But – let’s not overlook the obvious! It’s never too late for who? If the whole plant material remains in schedule I – we’ve gained nothing – in fact – we’ve fallen farther behind. If only the natural THC is extracted – we’ve lost the other 60 plus cannabinoids. It’s obvious – the NIC/NIH endorsement only serves Big Pharma, and government retains control…”nothing new.” No Home Grow legislation – 02.01.11 Justice Department Memo – DEA raids on sovereign states – only justifies the means. If we look up “corruption” in the dictionary – there it is. All is not gold that glitters. But – let’s not look at the glass half empty.

  10. H2O: Dangerous Chemical!
A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical “dihydrogen monoxide.”
And for plenty of good reasons, since:
1.it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
2.it is a major component in acid rain
3.it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
    4.accidental inhalation can kill you
    5.it contributes to erosion
6.it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
7.it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
    •Forty-three (43) said yes,
    •six (6) were undecided,
•and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.
The title of his prize winning project was, “How Gullible Are We?”
He feels the conclusion is obvious.
This is the perfect example of how we got into this mess!

  11. Well now they are doing it in Syria!!
    Hum??!!**!!
    Clash time……………
    420@4:20
    YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!*******!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I know we are close to legalization. Look how hard we have pushed and how hard they have pushed back?

  13. Try to convince the allmighty and all too powerful
College des medecins de la province de Quebec that cannabis has anticancer properties and might be useful as a medication.Good luck ! You might hit a wall ! The truth is that most doctors in this world are pills pushers and anytrhing else that is not in a pill form simply has no medical value. How about putting a big cannabis bud in a big gelatin capsule

  14. With things like this constantly coming out, people should start listening to Rick Simpson and the cannabis extract movement a little more closely.

  15. Ths qoute is taken directly from the National Institute of Health’s web site. “In a”retrospective cohort study of 64,855 men aged 15 to 49 years, participants were divided into cohorts based on their use of tobacco and marijuana: never inhaled either, inhaled only Cannabis, inhaled only tobacco, and inhaled tobacco and Cannabis.[5] Among the nonsmokers, two cases of lung cancer were diagnosed during the follow-up period. Among the men who inhaled tobacco either alone or in addition to marijuana, the risk of lung cancer increased tenfold. In the follow-up of men who inhaled marijuana alone, no cases of lung cancer were documented.” Wake the kids and call the neighbors people this document is worth reading and NEEDS TO BE PASSED AROUND!!!!!. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/pdq/cam/cannabis/healthprofessional

  16. 72 kat
Right!!! God made it for us – God gave it to us as a Sacrament. Because prohibs have dishonored his gift – I feel perfectly confident that they have pissed him off and God is now stalking prohibs for their disrespect and defiance. This 74 year prohibition is but a blink of God’s eye – but – “recognizing an eye for an eye” – when God exacts his punishment, perhaps prohibs will receive the same 74 year sentence.

  17. Hey government—stop the lies and corruption or you will deserve the consequinses.
A Revolution for the Good of Man is NEAR!!!!
Uncle Porky sat on a wall
Uncle Porky had a great fall
All the Kings Horses and All the Kings Men
Couldn’t put Uncle Porky back together again.
That’s what Greedy Government will do to itself.
End the UNCONSTITUTIONAL Marijuana Prohibition today!
Uncle Porky should’t be so greedy!

  18. Promoting marijuana as an aphrodisiac and as a cancer preventative is the key to acceptance.

  19. Isn’t this close what Nixons first panel decided…and then he fired them and got a different response from his toadies.
    What will Obama do?

  20. This is but another reason to show that Prohibition of this plant is wrong but will only be acknowledged by us.

  21. Hiya friends,
Now let me ask you all a question: do you “really” think that this government is going to do a 180 on this? After all, we are dealing with liars and cheaters who have manage to fool the world for over 74 years. What makes you think they won’t try another dirty trick?
Dont get your hopes too high. We are dealing with Satan here.

  22. This is all well and good but nothing is as it seems. Even though I would like nothing more than to applaud and be thankful for the efforts of these much needed entities. I cannot help but think it’s not being done for us, the people. You tell me one drug that has been on “the list” that they’ve come out and said it should be legalized outright? Name me one! You honestly expect me or anyone else to believe that once they “re-schedule” cannabis that somehow it will magically become legal in the future? Think about it. If cannabis were to become legal then the price would be driven down. That won’t do in a country of souls to sell. If they can find a way to keep a substance, cannabis, that is far less toxic than alcohol and tobacco, legal substances, from becoming legal and driving it’s price with the help of Pharms then everyone, BIG Mega-corps, govt. wins. Tobacco and alcohol will keep the majority of their clientele and Pharms will have yet another commodity, cannabis/HEMP/oils, in which to sell for a huge profit. Also the govt. will have a leg on which to stand concerning the fight against cannabis as just. Who’s really profiting from this move? Us? No! Care is a word I use loosely for these types cause to say that they actually care about those they wish to control is disingenuous. No doubt in my mind that I have pissed BIG PHARMA off. Pharma if you’re sincerely/truly sorry for what you did to my family then prove it, otherwise I will continue to spread the truth whether you like it or not. Was the life of my loved one not worth your time? Is their memory still alive? You lie about the lives you destroy and act as if you care. You may have all the money and power but I have one thing that you don’t. The truth and it will echo throughout eternity. What is your choice? Continue to keep locked the inherent knowledge which you possess as to it’s purpose only if you speak it. Or will you share your wealth of knowledge with the people who allow you to find yourselves high above and allow them to give thanks not for that which seeks control/power but understanding/forgiveness. Selfishness lies in the mind while selflessness resides in the heart. You prove time and time again where your loyalties lie. In the back pocket.

  23. I think its time for a schedule change! This study totally bebunks any notion that cannibus does not have any medical value and should be made availble for use by all cancer patients!

  24. Sunday 03.27.11 CDXX Communion.
The greatest allegiance to God, on his sacred day, is to “be truthful – the truth be to God,” as much as it may hurt – and yes – the truth does hurt.
    Let’s get real – let’s be honest.
Prohibitionists are “confirmed” agents of misinformation – “liars.” Perjury is a felony. Prohibs have “absolutely zero credibility.” As brethren, firmly in favor of humanity, we can only hope and pray that prohibs seek God’s forgiveness for their transgressions – otherwise their name [is] Mudd. It’s easy to resort to violence against liars, cheaters, and traitors because of their utter disrespect for our individual rights, and despicable acts against We the People and our Constitution – but – the best way to defeat them is to give deep moral support to the truth – and – kill them with kindness [until] we go to vote [then] piss on their name, exclude their unconstitutional crap, strip them of their Qualified Immunity – and – send them to hell for eternity. It would be “less than honest” to say that we would not feel justified in removing prohibs from our government – so – lets be the messenger with our mandate – and – “go all in” on 4-20 @ 4:20 [The 420 Invasion].
    Have a great CDXX Communion.

  25. And they will be able to tax it like alcohol and cigarettes that unlike marijuana does not kill hundreds of thousands of people, alot of them innocent victims, per year.

  26. This is all bull! They’ve known since at least the late 50’s about ThCs effects on various types of cancers. The shame of it is that in all of the time since then, they have been giving people Chemo! This won’t change anything because Chemo regimens are so damn expensive. They will continue to poison us and deny us Cannabis as long as we let them.
    -Oz

  27. Like David #33 pointed out isn’t it just strange how the DEA recently is trying to remove natural THC from Schedule #1 but leave the whole plant a Schedule #1 because whole plant cannabinoids can’t be synthesized by “you know who”?
Then they arrest and convict people that are honestly trying to help other people with cannabis who are too sick to help themselves. At this point the US Government can’t hide their evilness any longer.

  28. Watch the south park episode, “Medicinal Fried Chicken” You’ll realize how ridiculous this is.

  29. What’s freedom for if we can’t use it?
What’s freedom for if we can’t trust it?
Who is trying to relieve us of our freedom?
Maybe it has nothing to do with cannabis.
Maybe it has everything to do with freedom.
Maybe they are using cannabis as a distraction.
Maybe they’re giving us the old run around.
    Maybe!!!
    Watch your back side!!!

  30. Nearly 2 decades ago, it was discovered that we have THC receptors in our brains. These nodes have no other porpose than to receive and process THC and Cannibanoids. Why are they there? Or better yet, how did they get there? This is a concept that spans all philosophies. Whether you beleive they were designed by God (Whichever diety you beleive in), evolution, Mother Nature, or put there by aliens is irrelevant. There they are. Our bodies were meant to injest this substance.

  31. it will not be moved to schedule 2.if this comes through,it will be schedule 3:)I believe that it is now time to bombard your local elected officials with this article and begin the push to make this happen as soon as possible.although a lot of these studies are decades old,we and the medical community can show them that this is a major breakthrough for the fight against cancer.I know that the pharmaceutical industry will try to fight this, being that they cannot control production and sales, but with both the medical community and the N.C.I. behind this, that will take away their power to stand in the way.I just hope that those that have the “stoner” mentality can keep their rhetoric to a minimum,as this is a serious health issue, not a “party” issue.it is just as bad as the propaganda minded rhetoric on the other side of this issue….

  32. Well – just an FYI.
They have already edited the General Information section.
Original – General Information, paragrapy 2
The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects,
appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care
provider may recommend medicinal Cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible
    direct antitumor effect.
Today – General Information, Paragrapy 2
The potential benefits of medicinal Cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. Though no relevant surveys of practice patterns exist, it appears that physicians caring for cancer patients who prescribe medicinal Cannabis predominantly do so for symptom management.
Guess somebody pulled a Bozo No-No.
    .

  33. I think the Feds will soon have to admit the benefits of cannabis. I can’t wait to see it. Think about it. Since at least the mid 1930’s the feds have been saying how horrible it is, how it will make you go insane. How it will turn your children into murderers and rapists. See the movie “Reefer Madness” made by the government. Things haven’t changed much since.
I guess it would be really hard to admit to the public how wrong and decieving they have been all these years.
I’ve been using for medical purposes for over 10 years. It has made a huge, I mean, HUGE difference in my life. It’s not legal in my state by the way.
I fail to understand how it’s ok for me to ingest enough morphine and hydrocodone to overdose any two average people just so I can go to sleep for 3 or 4 hours, but it’s not ok to take a few puffs from my pipe to do the same thing.
That my friend, is really sad.
    Thanks for listening.
    dw

  34. Except… the National Cancer Institute website doesn’t say this. If you follow the link that this article claims the quote comes from there is nothing there about cancer having any use as a treatment of the disease, only the symptoms.
[Editor’s note: Treating only the symptom? Wrong.
    From the NCI link:
“Cannabinoids may cause antitumor effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death.”
