HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup Raided in Amsterdam

Early this morning, Dutch authorities raided the HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam.  UPDATE from HIGH TIMES Magazine:

According to representatives for HIGH TIMES magazine, sponsors of the 24th Annual Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, the event will continue tonight with a scheduled concert at the Melkweg concert hall (Lijnbaansgracht 234), followed by a full day of the expo (including voting) at the Borchland (Borchlandweg) on Thursday, the final day of the competition. An additional voting station will be set up starting at 2PM on Thursday at the Melkweg, which will remain open until the beginning of the official Cannabis Cup awards ceremony at 8PM. (read more)

According to the East Bay Express:

…police in Amsterdam are in the process of raiding the 24th annual High Times Cannabis Cup Expo. Possession of marijuana has been decriminalized in the Netherlands. But according to tweets on the scene, “everyone will have their buds confiscated, but no one will be charged or fined. This is the first time this has happened in 24 years.”

We broke the news on NORML SHOW LIVE this morning and spoke with Tim Martin of John Doe Radio, who has been in contact with numerous attendees in Amsterdam, including Scott from Rare Dankness Seeds, who called in live to the show (listen here).  According to Scott, much of the Dutch concern is over the concentrates – butane hash oil, for instance – that is considered a “hard drug” in Holland.

“They herded everybody toward one exit, like you’re getting on a ski lift at Vail… then one by one they had about 40 cops there for a little talk and search… People were dropping grams and grams of hash on the ground… baggies littering the floor… people were smoking it if you had it because you weren’t rolling out with it!”

According to Scott there has been one arrest of a vendor who was caught with a lot of “shake” (leaves and stems) which, according to Dutch law, are to be immediately disposed of.  Other reports indicate that there were checks of individuals to ensure they weren’t violating the 5-gram personal possession limit and checks of vendors for compliance with the 500-gram vendor possession limit.
It should be noted that none of this is precipitated by any change in Dutch law.  These limits on personal and vendor possession, disposal of trimmings, and prohibitions on cannabis concentrates have existed throughout the 24-year history of the Cannabis Cup.
What has changed is a new, more conservative government in the Netherlands that seeks to “send a message” about cannabis use.  They began with the closing of border coffee shops to all but Dutch, Belgian, and German passport holders, claiming that “foreign drug tourism” was leading to a host of social ills.

  1. The global elitist hypocrites are at it again, using any excuse, made up “law” , Orwellian tactics, all to crush freedoms. This is why we Occupy Occupy Occupy Occupy.

  2. It may not seem like it, but this proves we are winning.
The governments see the change coming and they are spoiled little children pitching one last ranting raving out of control fit.
We are a boxer; seeing the faint hint of a crack in our opponents defenses. We press on and beat them into submission. We do not rest, we do not relent. The end is near I promise!
Even the republican candidates are starting to come on board with us. We can do this! Make sure every candidate from every party knows the people want our rights to our own bodies back!
I’ve been arrested for this BS before, maybe it’s your turn. Don’t be a pussy, stand up for what you believe in. If we all take a chance and take a stand we can make this world the way we want it.
Or you can get stoned and stay home on election day and bitch about the status quo.~

  3. TRAGIC to be sure. They have an excellent argument, however, to reduce the amount of “drug tourism”, for several reasons, global politics being one. This sounds much like an example of habitual human behavior: A few people have screwed things up for everyone. Especially those who live and pay taxes in Amsterdam! Of course, the other side of the argument is that the income from this tourism is very profitable, and other such claims as NORML members already know. The Neth.should’ve been upfront and warned the event promoters of hash/concentrate laws and possible actions including raids. They should’ve left the “decriminalized” products.

  4. Does anyone remember what happens when they try to push drugs out of a country? it’s the same here, the more they push the more you lose. And when the Dutch push back, they will be overwhelmed and out of control. Keep pushing toward legalization as we all are all over the world. Peace and patients allways prevail.

  5. Sad to see this..but It does seems like global citizen views on cananbis are changing in a positive way. So keep your heads up people! Be proud of what you do and support..don’t let other put you down for what you do. Just remember its NORML!

  6. I agree with Chris, this is just a bunch of inept children trying to win a war they lost years ago. We are progressing, more and more people hear the truth every day. but we need to keep screaming that truth. We are right. these “governments” are wrong. we just need to keep rallying that and make our voices stronger. We need to have a movement like the Occupy one- just not a movement about anti-capitalism and how you want all the money you spent on ipods back.

  7. Great post Chris.
Frankly, I think the whole idea of a cannabis cup is rediculous, over the top and rubbing it in the faces of those we don’t want to antagonize. Let sleeping dogs lie.

  8. i was there and also have some tense video people freakin out consuming as much as we all were it was very very sad

  9. Hum, what to say? I believe that the USA must have had some part in this in some way?
I find it very odd to say the least that one day the chief of Dutch police wakes up from bed and is like “I feel like raiding a High Times cannabis cup today”.???
Who’s to know and why and what the f**k… 24years and then bam! Cops decide they want to get high; but for free so they steel all your stuff. I would think that the Dutch cops would know this is NOT going to sit well with the people.
    Dear Dutch police,
You are NOT going to scare the people into hiding, you are NOT going to make us stop fighting, and you are defiantly not going to stop the plant from growing!
Grow up and smell the flowers.

  10. So, the Netherlands thinks I’m going to bring “social ills” with me if I go as a weed tourist? How about I don’t go at all? Without the weed there is no reason to go. I’ll vacation somewhere else and spend my money there.

  11. The raid just makes the point that other countries need to find their own source for the supply of their own cannabis consumers. The Dutch government is sick of the nuisances of having foreigners get their safe supply of cannabis from the Netherlands, and Minister Ivo Opstelten is merciless regarding the millions of euros in lost business and the hundreds of lost jobs. This should just create more solidarity to pressure the U.N. and other governments to legalize. Like maybe people, probably more Brits visit A’dam than North Americans, but people in general didn’t really have to give a shit that much as long as they could go to a country with an essentially legalized cannabis policy such as the Netherlands or Denmark or Switzerland. Switzerland made the switch to citizens only several years ago, under pressure from prohibitionists and its own nationals who were irritated by the problems caused by drugs tourism.
Time to make the changes for legalization is now.
    Right now.
Cannabis is not going away just because of crackdowns, it’ll just go back underground, and we will go backwards and relinquish our progress of taking it out of the hands of crime networks.
Cannabis prohibition is a lost cause. Everyone agrees.
The 16 some states and federal territory (D.C.) are not going to reverse their laws for D.C or the U.N. prohibitionists. Neither U.N. nor D.C. is creating the jobs at the local level. All politics is local. People will do what they have to do to get on. Cannabis prohibition is no more than only on the books, just like blue laws. The sooner you legalize, the sooner you will stop pissing away money.

  12. I wonder how much those rich American drug warriors paid that poor countries politicians just to get its way.

  13. Maybe the Cannabis Cup will be held in Libya or in Egypt in the near future?
The Cannabis Cup should be like the Olympics and have it every four years at different places.
There will also be local, state, and national competition.
Reefer Madness will become the dark horror of the past and shall be forever buried.
    Oh what a dream!
Abolish the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 and the DEA because it was all a foolish mistake.

  14. Look at the google ads on the home page and tell me if the “right to work” folks support re-legalizing MJ. Look at Florida.

  15. I was in Amsterdam many times and never, I attended the Cannabis Cup. I hope that by the time I arrive, there will be no problems.

  16. “Authority” only exists so far as we allow it to.
We outnumber them thousands to one. Take it back.

  17. Time for a new book? Yellow cover representing the value,mj leaf and red letters for the shead blood.
    The title, Crimes Against Humanity.

  18. can you say inconsistent? okay how about illogical? okay how about nonfactual?
why the fuck are they getting uppity about plant stems and plant matter? fucking stupidddd
and getting uppity about a substance created from legal plant matter? stupidity.

  19. I guess people were harmed by the use cannabis otherwise they wouldn’t be doing this. The governments of the world are only protecting us… er, them.

  20. They should take all their stuff (including their money), tag them with lifetime stigmatization titles, and tell them that Jesus hates hippies like they would here in the good ol’ US of A. Further, they should also do this for excessive possession of McDonald’s and porn with maybe some hard prison time for gay porn. LOL…I do not know how these people (the authorities in this situation) will be able to justify their existence in the future- I suppose well have to act on faith alone.

  21. This is a PERSONAL attack on OUR WAY of Life.
The Paramilitary Style RAIDS in the US Empire is astonishing and half for cannabis.

  22. This is sad. Was this caused by the Dutch authorities or instigated by outside forces? When I visited the Netherlands I was a model US citizen and foreign tourist. I spent plenty of money. I visited museums. I enjoyed their cannabis and hash. I took nothing out of the country. I told all of my friends. Now, they have lost me as a tourist. I am not going to visit them with their anti tourist attitude. I may want to visit Portugal. Multiply me by a million people. Wake up Netherlands ….cannabis tourism is your friend! What you had worked well and you are replacing it with pure bullshit! Cannabis tourists can go to the illegal black market in any country.

  23. Why raid other than politics ?
    A permit dispute my ass
This is spiteful and demands a law suit that would be tied up forever and waste money.
The Reefer Madness has shall end
This is a last ditch effort to TRY and stop an industry that is providing jobs.
The self righteous BS has to end.
What a lame legacy Harry Anslinger and Willam Randloph Hearst left HUMANITY.One that costs billions in enforcement and courts costs and then prison and probation madness.Their overzealous efforts seem to span borders and live on forever.
    Then They dare ask
    What are your demands ?

  24. Wow Butane Honey Oil a Hardened drug? Funny, they knew about Honey Oil 24 years ago when they told growers to dump all the trim. Such a twisted law, lets allow the buds in large amounts bu concentrates are too much.
So coffee shops are only allowed to Dutch, Belgium and German people in Maastricht city? So does this mean I can’t goto Amsterdam or some of my other favorite city’s in the Netherlands to get some bud now as an American? Or is this only in affect at one city??

  25. Foreign drugs my ass. Drugs have been around as long as man . So you think your better than anyone else, your countries drugs have always been everywhere since time began and always will be. I’m 45 and i’m proof that you are wrong. Now unless you want to live in a cluster fuck situation and lose tourism dollars , you should not follow the ignorant. And thanks for the tourist dollars because we will happily take them for ourselves.

  26. I travel to Amsterdam twice per year and spend approximately 10K Euros on each visit. Sadly, the 2011 Cannabis Cup will be my last visit. We’ll be going to Vancouver or California where our $$ are welcome.
The Dutch will effectively destroy an entire industry and force it’s participants underground.Subsequent job losses and revenue losses will impact the NL gov.
Making weed illegal for tourists is like Las Vegas outlawing gambling….Real Stupid!!!!!

  27. The FDA should be called the “Fools and Dopes Admininstration”. Scumbags work for money not safety. Decide to ban a supplement that had a contaminated batch causing 30 to die, then approve a competing pharmaceutical which contributes to the over 100,000 deaths per year caused by the correct use of pills. This is America. Where marijuana, a Schedule I drug (behind cocaine, and meth), is more non-toxic than any other FDA approved drug. So the government says, “Cocaine, OK. Meth, hell give it to your child (Adderal), but pot… 5 years in prison buddy!” F-U FDA. F-U!!!”

  28. What needs to happen in Amsterdam is for the businesses, besides the coffee shops,to start losing the tourist money,,no one will pay attention to the coffee shops when they complain of revenue loss until other people that lose stand up and protest.

  29. wow, aint that something.I live in michigan(u.s.a)where we the people voted too legalize and won,but yet the attorny general does everything he can too cause problems for those who needs it!!!

  30. That’s just awesome. They should keep this up and drive marijuana underground because Prohibition doesn’t increase violence or cede huge sums of money to organized crime or waste police resources, and jailing people doesn’t cost money nor does it harm families!
In a couple of years, maybe Amsterdam could be like those Mexican cities where they keep finding headless bodies and stuff.
    Just super!

  31. I just don’t understand why the police can’t be doing more useful things like fighting crime than harrassing stoners. It’s not like we ever hurt anyone by smoking weed. Maybe the government is afraid of us because we aren’t closed minded and we actually think.

  32. Iemand heeft een grote vergissing bij de organisatie van deze evenement gemaskt. Het vond niet in Amsterdam plaats maar in Duivendrecht.
Someone made a big mistake in organizing this event. It took place in Duivendrecht and not in Amsterdam. Technically and governmentally, they are NOT the same.
Just do a search (Google, etc.) with the terms
    Duivendrecht Cannabis Cup
and the links with the address of the event location will pop up.
A gedoogvergunning (tolerance permit for cannabis) from Duivendrecht is needed. Anything from Amsterdam is nice but outside of its jurisdiction.
Maybe next year, if there is a next year, the Cup will be back in Amsterdam proper. You might also look into having it at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.
Too bad I’m not in the Netherlands to help organize such events and to write articles about the various lesser known Cups all over the Netherlands. I’ve been looking for an employment contract to live in the Netherlands for some time now. I’d like to live there legally on a yearly basis, not just fly there to organize and leave. Too many things could go wrong.

  33. The HT Cannabis Cup has nothing to do with Cannabis. It is a serious money making event for High Times.
The raid on the cannabis cup expo, and subsequent restrictions at the award cermony on thursday night owes more to the brutal greed of High Times, and its ham fisted effort at running an event in Holland.
HT run this evend as a money making orgy year on year, and completly disregard the safety and well being of competitors and their clients.
There will be no more HT Cup in Amsterdam.
The dutch may be a tolerant people. But they are also a proud people, and are tired of having their noses rubbed in this High Times money orgy every year.

  34. #49,,do the Dutch intend to stop any concerts or theatrical plays that intend on making money for bringing what consumers want to Amsterdam?
How about the beer distributors? They make money every day there. And doesn’t your country have it’s own Oktoberfest? How many years has that been going on?
Does anyone make money off of that?
