The percentage of high-schoolers who identify as current consumers of cannabis fell 26 percent between 2013 and 2023.
The NSDUH data reports that the percentage of those ages 12 to 17 who reported having ever tried marijuana fell 18 percent from 2014 to 2023. Those reporting having consumed cannabis during the past year fell 15 percent. The percentage of teens reporting current marijuana use fell 19 percent.
“These findings highlight the need for proper regulatory oversight of cannabinoid-containing products to ensure quality assurance and deter misleading or unfounded health claims in product marketing,” the study’s authors concluded.
“Prevalence of cannabis use did not change among youth over time,” the study’s authors concluded.
“These surveys’ findings offer support for the notion that, in some instances, cannabis can act as an intervention for certain persons seeking to reduce their alcohol consumption.”
Investigators determined, “Secondhand harms from others’ alcohol use were substantially more prevalent than those from others’ use of any other drug.”
“These findings, and others, refute hypothesized associations between cannabis use and low motivation. It is unfortunate that many of these longstanding stereotypes have historically guided public health messaging about cannabis and have also been used to stigmatize and discriminate against those who consume it responsibly.”
