Frederick County’s Executive said that pre-employment marijuana testing requirements “created an unnecessary barrier to employment.”
Since 2020, more than 139,000 commercially licensed drivers have failed mandatory drug tests for cannabis – more than the total number of test failures for all other substances combined.
The study’s authors determined that per se THC limits are “not supported by science,” and that they risk “wrongly accusing” motorists who are neither impaired nor have recently consumed cannabis.
The measure awaits approval from the Governor, who is expected to sign it into law.
The new policy takes effect in January.
“These policy updates are more cost-effective and will ultimately help us widen the applicant pool for several city positions,” city officials announced.
“Neither prospective nor current employees should be discriminated against for their off-the-job consumption of cannabis.”
