San Jose, CA: City council leaders voted this week in favor of a motion to regulate medical marijuana dispensaries and to impose an excise tax on the facilities’ owners.
The Council is expected to decide on the proposed ordinance in June, and is considering putting the tax question before municipal voters in November, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
A coalition of more than a dozen local dispensaries is lobbying the City Council for the oversight regulations, which are reportedly backed by San Jose City Mayor Chuck Reed.
San Jose is the tenth largest city in the nation.
Last July, over 80 percent of voters in Oakland approved Measure F, which imposes a separate retail business excise tax on local medical marijuana dispensaries.
