By taking cannabis products off street corners and placing them behind the counter, lawmakers are providing cannabis consumers with safer experiences and greatly reducing their risk of being inadvertently exposed to contaminated products.
The White House’s 2026 fiscal year budget request calls for the repeal of a long-standing federal budget rider that prohibits the Justice Department from using taxpayer dollars to prosecute patients and others involved in the state-legal medical cannabis industry.
“Older adults are well aware of the litany of serious adverse side-effects associated with available prescription drugs, like opioids or sleep aids, and they see medical cannabis as a practical and potentially safer alternative.”
“California NORML is proud to have taken a leadership roll sponsoring this bill. Cannabis is already heavily over-taxed relative to comparable products like beer, wine, and tobacco in California.”
Provisions in the bill open the program to those suffering from chronic pain, among other newly eligible conditions. It also expands the variety of cannabis formulations that may be possessed by patients and significantly increases total number of state-licensed dispensaries that can operate in the state.
