Media Hysterics About Supposed Cancer Link Nothing New

It must have been a slow news day.
According to Google News, more than 750 media outlets — that’s 7-5-0, folks — have now weighed in on this week’s pot scare story du jour: “Smoking marijuana causes testicular cancer.”
So is there any truth behind the provocative headline? Some, but hardly enough to justify the media’s feeding frenzy.
Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research in Seattle matched 369 men with of testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) with 979 healthy controls. Here’s what they found.
Men who self-reported having “ever used” marijuana had no statistically significant risk of testicular cancer compared to healthy controls who never used pot.
Men who reported currently using marijuana at least once per week, and who had started smoking pot prior to age 18, had an elevated risk compared to controls of contracting a type of testicular cancer known as nonseminoma.
Sounds scary, huh?  Well here’s the catch.
According to the federal government, millions of people smoke marijuana regularly. By contrast, diagnoses of nonseminoma, which typically affects males between the ages of 15 and 34, are extremely rare.
How rare?
Nonseminomas account for fewer than one half of one percent of all cancers among American men.
Further undermining the study’s hypothesis is this: Since the 1970s, the percentage of American males smoking pot has climbed dramatically. By contrast, incidences of nonseminoma have risen only nominally during this same time period.
Of course, this is hardly the first time the mainstream media has jumped ugly on cannabis. Around this same time last year, news outlets from Reuters to Fox News declared that marijuana posed a greater cancer risk than cigarettes. Only problem was that the study they were reporting on actually demonstrated the opposite.
So why does the mainstream media continue to get the story wrong when it comes to pot? Good question. You can read my abbreviated answer here. And while you’re on NORML’s site, get the skinny on what the scientific literature really has to say about any potential links between marijuana and cancer here, here, and here.

  1. This is what is called “selective journalism”.
“The study, by scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle and published in the journal Cancer, asked 369 testicular cancer patients if they had a history of marijuana use.
A further 979 healthy men were asked about their use of the drug.
Being an existing cannabis user raised the risk of cancer by 70 per cent, while men who had used the drug regularly from puberty were twice as likely to develop the disease than those who had not used it.”
Does anyboby see the disproportion of the patients? They only tested 369 guys with testicular cancer. But they tested 979 healthy men? And from that they declare that pot causes cancer?
This article was also EDITED. The original article on the MSN homepage included a paragraph that stated that this study WAS INCONCLUSIVE and that more testing needed to be done!!!!
I am 50, and have smoked cannabis every day for 37 years. My nuts are fine. My brother just lost a nut. He never smoked pot in his life and he is 48.
There are well over 1 million cannabis users in America. If this study were anywhere near accurate, 350,000 of them would already have testicular cancer. They don’t. Otherwise we would have seen the epidemic that the government wants you to believe will happen if you smoke the evil weed.
And the timing of this article: coincidental? On the heels of the Phelps/Kelloggs controversy and just when the legalization movement is gaining steam? Just when Obama says he will stop the raids on medical marijuana dispensaries?
You see, the DEA is just like the rest of America when it comes to the economy. They need a job too.
And just like most of America, they “don’t wanna work, they just want to bang on the drum all day”, so they want the easy job of going after harmless, non violent pot smokers instead of the dangerous, violent dealers and users of Alcohol, tobacco, meth, heroin and coke.
Well lets keep them employed doing real work.
A DEA agent going after a pot smoker is no better than a slacker employee at McDonalds who’s only motivation for showing up to work is an easy paycheck.

  2. The Government Lies
    The Media Lies
    Where is the Truth anymore???
i Think Deep Down they know…
But they jus dont wanna admit their Wrong…

  3. When they say my chance of getting cancer is so great that after only a few joints over a weekend once in while increases my risk 20 fold, then I’ll listen. Not when my chance of getting cancer over 10 years is as great as being struck by lightning 10 times in a row. Its funny how they take a study that proves marijuana is as harmless as drinking water and put a dramatic spin on it. Why don’t they talk about how the chlorine in our tap water has been proven to cause cancer over many years of exposure. Give me a break!

  4. This is interesting do to the fact that we have higher than normal cancer rates here in washington and it is not Cannibus, But things like Asarco and the other founderys that lined the waterfront along with the other major industery over the last 100+ years putting out massive amouts of toxic waste into the air and water here in washington state there is no way that you could do a study here in these three countys and not haveit be tained be this. It is a constant public service alert to never play or dig in the dirt here do ot lead and arsnic that these industry giants left for us and are kids!

  5. I am glad that NORML commented on this. The timing of this ‘study’ with the Phelp’s scandal that shouldn’t even be an issue, seems too good to be true.
As does this study. I read 3 or 4 different versions of it, and there were drastic differences to each. I seem to have debunked the study as easily as your article.
Most of the news articles on the studies slipped up themselves. They admitted that there hasn’t been enough research done. They also said that the cancer was very rare. The study said that they also didn’t take into consideration alcohol and tobacco use. Also, I was confused whether it was marijuana itself, or the smoke from marijuana smoking that made them see the link. None of the articles I read agreed on which one it was. Either way, they never discussed which chemical(s) it was that posed the supposed risk. Most of the articles used key words like “may” “might”. ALL red flags (IMHO). As someone already mentioned, there are MILLIONS of regular/past users–why are we not seeing more testicular cancer?
What better way to threaten the growing cannabis reform movement than to try and attack the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes, and also to make people fear their sexual well-being by the use of said cannabis. If you ask me (as I’m sure you all will agree) that’s a very cheap tactic.

  6. – – – Saw this ‘news-story’ during a local broadcast today, run,(coincidentally), right before another story about how taking vitamins don’t help make one healthier, nor help reduce the incidence of cancer, (A study conducted on a certain demographic of women, whom supposedly had the same rates of cancer, whether they took multi-vitamins or not). I wonder who funds these
    studies / news-releases?

  7. Political language — and with variations this is true of all political parties, from Conservatives to Anarchists — is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.
    George Orwell

  8. First off I don’t believe this research. Secondly, I’d give a nut to be able to smoke in peace for the rest of my life.

  9. When one considers the time, money and effort put forth by the previous administrations does any of this come as a surprise?
It’s been almost one hundred years since the dawning of the anti-cannabis ideology, and during that time we the people have been fed propaganda and lies. Everything from Dupont’s petrochemical endeavors to certain facts about our Presidents have been hand selected and altered… when of course the mainstream media can’t squeeze in a good fictitious story.
To me… this is just another monkey-marijuana test. It’s pointless propaganda aimed at distracting the average hard working Americans (who may not be informed about Marijuana’s qualities… good or bad.)
Well, to those who feel that our First Amendment rights should be used to fuel this ethically and morally debasing greed-machine… more power to you. In the end, the real Justice prevails.
    Namaste.

  10. This article [coincidentally?] appeared on same day that White House says Raids will stop after new drug czar appointed. (Doesn’t commander-in-chief control current DEA?) The stimulus needs to pass in MAD RUSH (which gives billions & billions to fed law enforcement) but obviously no rush on saving money or lives by observing state laws.
Anyway, the fear-mongering headlines didn’t ring true, so I started digging to find the actual study. I’m particular like that. I don’t want anyone to tell me what it says, I want to read it myself. It took a long time just to find the name of the study. And the study itself has to be purchased. But I did find this info, as follows … And, just as I suspected, the study was paid for by feds, and it was completed in Aug. 08. It’s not a scientific, controlled study, it’s a preliminary test of a hypothesis. Big Difference between the two. Here’s more info …

    CONCLUSIONS:
An association was observed between marijuana use and the occurrence of nonseminoma TGCTs. Additional studies of TGCTs will be needed to test this hypothesis, including molecular analyses of cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoid signaling, which may provide clues regarding the biologic mechanisms of TGCTs.Cancer 2009. © 2009 American Cancer Society.

    !!!!!!!!!!
Here’s another website with an article & link to the abstract:
    http://www.medpagetoday.com/HematologyOncology/OtherCancers/12802
Although the incidence of all testicular tumors has been increasing, the mechanism by which marijuana use may be particularly associated with nonseminomas is unknown.
The researcher noted they were able to interview only 67.5% and 52.2% of eligible cases and controls, which may have introduced a bias. In addition, they had to rely on self-reported use of marijuana, which is an illicit drug, and there was no central pathologic review.

    !!!!!!!!!!!
And here’s an example of totally misleading headline (as turned up in yahoo search engine, from our northern neighbors) and then the text of the article sprouts irrelevant tangents ad nauseum:
CTV.ca Marijuana linked to higher risk of testicular cancer … marijuana use may dramatically increase a man’s risk of developing the most aggressive form of testicular cancer … Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
“Factors that further reinforce the researchers’ hypothesis is the fact that chronic marijuana use is known to have multiple negative effects on reproductive pathways, particularly reduced sperm quality, lower testosterone levels and impotency.
Male infertility and poor semen quality are linked to an increased risk of developing testicular cancer.
Marijuana may also block a cannabinoid-like chemical produced by the male reproductive system that is thought to have a protective effect against cancer.
The researchers caution that they need to conduct further research to confirm their findings in larger populations….”
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE – everyone contact Senators, Representatives as well as any & all media to voice strong opposition to this MAD RUSH on passing stimulus. A bill of this magnitude & complexity requires time to read, research and discuss … consequences can have far-reaching impact on economy, health & liberty. It takes hours & hours to read, contains provisions for nuclear weapons, electronic measures, “biosurveillance”, technology, health care, education, elderly, disabled, international relations, and has many vague items, and surprisingly little oversight-transparency-reporting requirements.
    STOP THE MAD RUSH NOW!

  11. when I see stuff like this I begin to realize that marijuana will never be legalized simply because the people in this country are too freakin’ stupid.
    How stupid?
    You have no idea.

  12. Sorry, but testing 0.000000000001% of the population, and using “Unconfirmed data”, as part of the study, is hardly medical or scientific, and not sufficient to apply to the nation as a whole.
For all we know, they smoked crack-joints also, or all have fish-tanks, or also live near nuclear power plants, or trash burning complexes, or live in asbestos homes.
Seriously, this is what the government uses to determine what needs control?
That is like me seeing a person with a lollipop, hack-up a lung, and someone without a lollipop, not hacking-up a lung. So, that medically proves, lollipops cause lung-hack symptom, and 50% of the population uses lollipops, because I saw 1 who did, and 1 who didn’t.
Where is the control group? Admittance of substance use, without a sample of the substance, is not justifiable of “Control”. What THC level was it? What genetic group was it? Was there history of testicular cancer in those patients? What other things did they consume, cigarettes, alcohol, sand, nitrous, peanut-butter, soy, lead, glue, latex-fumes, aspirin, mercury, or did they all ride bikes with hard seats?
Someone should sue them for a false and insufficient publication, under the name of medical science, and under the false pretense of factual medical study. Revoke their medical licenses, they should not be researching or prescribing, or diagnosing anyone. They will cause more harm, than good, when they later publish an article saying that asbestos reduces brain tumors.

  13. these people that make up this study should get the facts strait. Ive smoked cannabis for 20 years and never had any trouble. cannabis should be legal.for medical and recreational use better than drinking.

  14. They just want to grab people with the head-line the story means nothing.
Although the incidence of all testicular tumors has been increasing, the mechanism by which marijuana use may be particularly associated with nonseminomas is unknown.
They make one assumption… they both went up there has to be a link.

  15. Actually Marijuana is in theory(only reason I say in theory is I can’t find a direct study) safer than water. Most cases of death by water intoxication accure from 10 liters/2.6 gallons of water are or when during intensive exercise electrolytes aren’t replenshed, yet large to massive amounts of liquid are consumed. The number of deaths caused by water intoxication normally triples the average number of so-called pot related deaths, around 3 a year, and that’s more the fault inaccurate testing. So yeah Ganja’s pretty much the safest substance on the planet and when you figure the Doctor smacking you on the ass at birth causes you to inhale far larger quantaties of oxygen than is needed shaving off countless years of life. Seems to me a white labcoat and 7 years of school doesn’t make anyone a god.

  16. less than 1,500 people in a study about a rare cancer, with no accounting for varibles such as genetic/familia cancer lines, other lifestyles etc etc. This is not a study, this is not scientific, this is not even predictory, it is a thrash article

  17. the current medical thinking is that non semino testes cancer arises from leisions that are formed during embryotic growth. most medical scientists and doctors theroize that when test. hits the leisions in puberty they grow into cancers. Thus Can. Sat. smoked later in life could not possibly have an effect!

  18. “A DEA agent going after a pot smoker is no better than a slacker employee at McDonalds who’s only motivation for showing up to work is an easy paycheck”
I would argue that the dea agent is much worse considering he’s paid by tax dollars to go after somone most taxpayers don’t consider a criminal. By going after pot smokers they ensure that they won’t be able to make any difference in the “drug problem” thus stealing from taxpayers. The Mcdonalds employee is in a much more honorable profession.

  19. Wow.. It’s okay guys.. keep smokin.. your balls are fine.. squeeze them though.. check up on them..really. it’s cool though.. i doubt this has any weight at all.. what a waste of research money.. = /
    Sad.

  20. The Phelps-Kellogg/ Medical/ Disease Issue is the Effect…. Here is a major, if not the single largest cause….. Pharmaceutical corps do not make decisions on what’s good for the people. They make decisions based on what will further proprietary control over a drug .. In this case a drug that could mimic the medical benefits of marijuana. They’ll never create the perfect drug, in respect for what benefits the people, because like food science .. Their methods are based on reductionism..they isolate the component of the plant (thc).. and out of context with the whole plant will never have the same wholistic qualities. And in an effort to further their interest, they lobby politicians to see things their way…. to pass laws in their favor. and like all reductionism they only see part of the whole. A more complete view of history would show that pharmaceutical interest are actually the primary cause of drug abuse and the largest force behind the “War on Drugs”. Why? They can’t patent a natural plant that anyone can grow and pick. A plant that may also threaten the profits of drugs they’ve already produced. But they can do everything in their power to make it illegal, including using the media to broadcast the viewpoint that the plant is so dangerous. This gives them time to try to 1:Come up with a synthetic alternative for marijuana, like marinol (inferior product people have to pay for). or #2 Genetically modify the plant (GMO’s) like the food industry does, so that the plant can be patented….. again resulting in something people have to pay for…. Heaven forbid a medicinal plant be free in a free country.. which brings me to this final point. Since when do pharmaceutical company’s have more constitutional rights than the people….. To take the natural plants of the earth and use them for our own benefit… in the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Please, lets open our eyes! The truth is in our history! Our children deserve the truth!

  21. The fundemental reason as to why, the State is having a Hard time to recognize Medicinal Marijuana is. Every State in the Union can Grow Marijuana and/or Hemp. Yes, All 50 States and Islands south, Canada and Mexico can Grow either Hemp or sister Marijuana. Marijuana can basically grow anywhere on earth. It’s time Man Accepts the fact that it knows Marijuana is good for a human and must flourish off of it. After all one must ask, “who can flourish off a weed, rather take the world with metal. Weeds grow back faster!”

  22. It’s funny; this article states that “apoptosis induced by cannabinoid receptor CB1 and CB2 agonists leads to activation of ERK1/2 leading to G1 cell cycle arrest in prostate cancer cells.”
    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17068343
“Based on these data we suggest that cannabinoid receptor agonists should be considered as novel agents for the management of prostate cancer.”

  23. So why does the mainstream media continue to get the story wrong when it comes to pot?
    My guess, things like:
Fake “news releases” from astro-turf front companies: http://prwatch.org/fakenews3/summary
Big money influence from big pharma: http://www.prwatch.org/node/8175
Huge budgets, courtesy our very own tax dollars, used to brainwash us: http://prwatch.org/node/8197
Pressure from conflict-of-interest mega-media and their shills, pushing their journalists to lie.*
Good job LawyerLynn for chasing down the info!
    * I tried to locate the link to a show I saw… Moyers? Another PBS show? where some local TV reporters were fired, then sued back, then… because their boss told them to not report on some gross issues of wrong-doing a sponsor, or TV station owner was doing…
It’s really a bummer so (too) many things have become so costly. Too many people kowtow to the check-writers. Especially galling is that many of them got their huge sums through market manipulation, taking advantage of employees, shirking environmental responsibilities, cutting corners…
It’s a “good thing” the cost of TVs are about on par with a computer. The downside is broadband is outrageously expensive, at least compared to what the average couch potato is used to paying for the one-way brainwashing experience.

  24. Lol Law & Order took a dumb ass blind shot at pot last night saying the only way to extract Hash oil is with butane. Most well known way to do so yes, only way hell no. It takes an overtly high level of heat(wrap the hash tightly{you want it to have the ability to expand, but not lose any smoke} in tinfoil and “cook it” on low-medium in a pan you don’t mind damaging, time consuming and somewhat risky, but can be done)/ or chemical extraction with a high grade alcohol(I haven’t done it this way myself, so uncertain about the exacts).

  25. If everyone would please call and flood President Barack Obama’s own message line at 202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414 and tell him we want him to REPEAL our Federal marijuana/hemp laws now, every day until our Federal Gov. Repeals all marijuana/hemp laws, then “We the people’s voices will be finally heard loud and clear! Copy this and pass it along! MAKE A DIFFERENCE! CALL

  26. I don’t care what they say, the fact is I know what it does for me and I think it need to be legal. and if we could get all of the pot smoker like me off of their ass’s and go vote on getting it legal instead of just sitting around and saying that the goverment will never make it legal. we will not might but will get it legal.Just think how many people sit on their ass and said that some one like Obama would never be in the BIG OFFICE. let me tell you we can do anything if we would just believe that we can and get up and vote on it and do something about it. get off ya’ll ass,

  27. They will cause more harm, than good, when they later publish an article saying that asbestos reduces brain tumors. Marijuana can basically grow anywhere on earth.

  28. — They’re trying to detract us, distract us from the REAL CAUSES of CANCER; Industrial Pollution, UNnatural food-additives, and SIN-thetic drug and fabrics. It’s all about the BIG MONEY!!!

  29. In Comment #28, NewOldSalt said,
“I tried to locate the link to a show I saw… Moyers? Another PBS show? where some local TV reporters were fired, then sued back, then… because their boss told them to not report on some gross issues of wrong-doing a sponsor, or TV station owner was doing…”
I think you’re referring to a case from Florida in which a pair of investigative reporters were fired from a FOX affiliate for attempting to report on use of Monsanto’s BGH in the state’s dairy industry.
There were suits and counter suits and the upshot of it all was that FOX has the right to broadcast lies and/or withhold broadcasting the truth as they so choose.

And yes, the timing of this story and its widespread publication are quite fishy. The Phelps story is blowing up in the prohibitionists’ faces and could well prove a catalyst for change. This bullshit non-story is a feeble attempt to stick their finger in the dike. The time for full blown legalization is here and now. There are too many favorable pieces in place for it to not happen. Just like the attempts to quash decriminalization in Massachusetts failed big time, these bogus attempts at PR are doomed to backfire.
BTW – in my FU email to Kelloggs I told them that I refused to purchase any of their products until they restored Phelps’ contract, AND extended to him a VERY PUBLIC APOLOGY.
What a bunch of sanctimonious dumbasses. I predict a 42% drop-off in Pop Tart sales alone.

  30. It is irresponsible of journalists to widely publize small, preliminary studies that can hardly be considered conclusive.
It’s not just political propaganda like this that is a problem. These types of stories create real public health scares that often times lead to unforseen collateral damage.
Researchers are VERY quick to say that their research is inconclusive and that more evidence is needed when they lack overwhelming evidence. However, journalists grant a form of validation to the results of these studies, shifting public opinion through information bias.
What studies are published these in major news outlets stem more from political relevance and emotional response rather than the scientific validity of them.

Raymond DuBois and colleagues at the University of Texas in Houston discovered that a key receptor for cannabinoids, which are found in marijuana, is turned off in most types of human colon cancer.

“Marijuana does not lead to physical dependency, although some evidence indicates that the heavy, long-term users may develop a psychological dependence on the drug”
    – The Shafer Commission of 1970

Mel Sembler and his wife Betty founded Straight, Inc., a drug treatment program for youth that used sleep deprivation, starvation, beatings, denial of basic health needs, sexual assault, deprivation of liberty and speech and psychological torture (Straight, Inc. later became Drug Free America Foundation.
From 1976-1985 it was known as Straight, Inc. and had a reputation for abusing kids as a drug rehabilitation program. In 1985 it changed its name to Straight Foundation, Inc. in order to protect its money and its principals from civil suits. In 1995 it was changed again to Drug Free America Foundation. DFAF is a national and international drug policy think tank and provider of services for drug free work places.
The Seed was a teen drug rehabilitation chain in Florida in the 1970s. The US Senate accused the program of using North Korean brainwashing methods on American kids. Ambassador Melvin Sembler patterned Straight, Inc. after The Seed.
Calvina Fay is the Executive Director of Drug Free America Foundation and Save Our Society From Drugs (S.O.S.). Drug Free America Foundation provides education to the public about the dangers of drugs of abuse and efforts of drug pushers to legalize drugs.
Putting Faith In a Social Service Role; Church-Based Providers Freed From Many Rules
CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex.- Over the door of one church-based drug treatment center in Houston, a sign printed in foot-high letters announces: “Drug Addiction Is NOT a Disease. It’s a Sin.” At another, clients pass by a poster of an addict in a hospital bed, ripping IV tubes out of his arms and throwing his pills in the garbage. An angel hovers nearby, offering her protection from this plague of prescriptions.
And at a Christian young adult home in Corpus Christi, police recently took the unusual step of arresting a supervisor after teenagers complained that they were beaten and roped to a bed, all in the name of Christian discipline. More arrests are anticipated, authorities say.

This whole testicular cancer crap reeks of a ‘quid pro quo’.
After doing a little research on the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, I discovered that the “Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle receives more funding from the federal government than any other cancer research facility in the country.” Surprise, surprise.
I also ran across some interesting information on the ‘Center’s’ lobbying efforts in Washington.
Now, the ‘study’ starts to make sense. When will our government stop all the lies , propaganda and misinformation from their biased studies?
With over 20 million cannabis users in the US alone, where’s all the cancerous testicles? I’ve been enjoying the herb for nearly 40 years, starting at at age 16, and I’ve still got my boys.
Someone with more recourses than I have, should be looking into the influence that the Feds had in this ‘study’.
