UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!! UPDATE!!!
I have a more in depth commentary on Holder’s comments and Chuck Grassley’s inane response online today on The Hill‘s influential Congress blog — which is primarily read by Capitol Hill insiders, members of Congress, staffers, and legislative aides. You can read my commentary here.
Want to send Sen. Grassley a firm message right in his backyard? Post some feedback on The Hill‘s blog and your comments will get to him loud and clear.
Republican Congressman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) really, really doesn’t like the idea of patients using medical cannabis — even when their use is compliant with state and local laws.
Just hours after U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder reaffirmed that he will no longer authorize the federal justice department to undermine statewide medical marijuana laws, Grassley lashed out.
“The first rule of medicine, first do no harm, is being violated by the attorney general by his decision,” said Grassley, whose comments were reported by the Associated Press.
Funny, last time I checked Chuck Grassley represented the state of Iowa and only the state of Iowa, which is not one of the thirteen states that have legalized the possession and use of medical cannabis under state law. If Senator Grassley so desperately wants to control what people do in states other than his own perhaps he should consider running for President. Or, better yet, maybe he should just mind his own business!
Senator Grassley’s arrogant comments are an affront to the 72 million Americans who reside in states where the use of medical cannabis is legal, and are objectionable to the 80 percent of voters nationwide who support the physician-supervised use of therapeutic cannabis.
Offended? Insulted? Just plain pissed off? Then why not give him a piece of your mind?
After all, he certainly doesn’t mind imposing his own views upon you.

Senator Grassley; Most times when people do not know what they are talking they should keep their mouth shut. So— SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE,until,of course , you are better informed.
What a closed minded ignorant person. These are the kinds of people we really don’t need in positions running any part of this country. America was founded for freedom, and assholes like this guy are taking ours away.
Dude is a jack of an ass……I’m already working the local news hacks over this.
just sent him a piece of my mind 😛 Basically i said that i was offended that he would attempt to undermine the hierarchy of how our government works and that he should do his job and worry about his own state
You can leave Chuck Grassley a comment on his youtube post at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAf0HYpmnoo
I sent him this message.
“Senator Chuck Grassley:
You should consider learning the facts about marijuana. Find a good scientific objective source. The gateway theory is quite ridiculous; the vast majority of marijuana users do not decide to use any other “illegal” drugs. If you honestly believe in this mythical hypothesis then you might as well start making a lot of simple popular luxuries illegal too, I mean consider how many hard drug users started with things like bread and water first! Please do not attempt to hinder our laws in California, we do not attempt to manipulate how you choose to run your own state.”
If You are a stoner from Iowa; I’d say the best way to help narrow minded relics like him on his way out is to : register to vote; then VOTE his hash outta there. POT may be illegal….but politics sure the hell ain’t!! We, as stoners gotta start VOTING!!! Get involved somehow; and let’s give ’em an “ich” that only the scratches of Legalization can sooth.
RICO out**************
Well let’s give Charles a piece of our mind folks.
University Of Maryland’s, Center For Substance Abuse, published the following.
Is Marijuana Addictive?
The debate between marijuana and addiction has been growing steadily over the last decade. Many users may not display any signs of addiction or withdrawal, yet the number of users seeking treatment has been growing steadily over the years. Overall, it is difficult to say whether or not the drug is physically addictive, but it is known that marijuana use can lead to psychological addiction and social dependence.
I sent an email to him, telling him how outraged I was that he does not support medical cannabis. I am glad he does not represent my state! I highly recommend to vote against him in the next election!
Sent him a message. Don’t you worry.
The guy doesn’t have an email address, or does he? I can’t seem to find it. I’ll have to give him a call at some later date, perhaps then.
i would jus Laugh iF he gets CanceR oR anotha deadly disease and wants to Cure his Pain wit Marijuana bcause all the other LegaL Medicine aint workin good…
He has to Learn to Look at Marijuana from the sick paients Point of view…
Here’s a copy of the Hippocratic Oath used in most medical school’s. Maybe the congressman should read it and remember that medicine and health care are for the treatment and care of people. Not for making billion’s in the buisness world.
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.
I will not be ashamed to say “I know not,” nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient’s recovery.
I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.
I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person’s family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.
Written in 1964 by Louis Lasagna, Academic Dean of the School of Medicine at Tufts University, and used in many medical schools today.
Oh and a little side note.
“First, do no harm”: Not in the Hippocratic Oath
It is a widely held misconception that the familiar dictum “First, do no harm” comes from the Hippocratic Oath, an oath many physicians take when they enter medical practice.
However, the Hippocratic Oath does not and never did contain those words (nor was it actually written by Hippocrates, according to many sources). It expresses a similar idea, but never employs the words “First, do no harm.”
It is the opinion of many scholars that Hippocrates did, in fact, originate the phrase, but did so in his Epidemics, Bk. I, Sect. XI. One translation reads: “Declare the past, diagnose the present, foretell the future; practice these acts. As to diseases, make a habit of two things — to help, or at least to do no harm.”
The Greek “First, do no harm” becomes “Primum non nocere” in Latin. A translation of the original perhaps, but some sources attribute “Primum non nocere” to the Roman physician, Galen.
Today there is no single oath that all physicians take upon entering practice. Depending on where they earn their medical degrees, they may take any one of many pledges, but all embody the ethics and ideals of Hippocrates, the acknowledged father of modern medicine.
The exact wording of the original oath has been subject to dispute, as translations and interpretations of the original Greek have varied. Complicating the picture are the many modernizations of the oath which take into account changes in language, social mores, and medicine itself over the centuries.
What an arrogant idiot. “first do no harm” i cant think of a drug that doesnt have some side effect. Even asprin! HA, legalize the herb
Unbelievable. Harry Anslinger’s bogus marijuana claims are still accepted by idiots like him.
i wrote to him this morning when I heard about this. most of the people here in Iowa think that marijuana would be a great crop. unfortunately, we have “leaders” stuck in the reefer madness era.
Congressman Grassley’s remaks reminds me of two things I learned in College:
From Philosophy class comes the definitinon of apriorism: “My mind is made up, don’t confuse me with the facts.”
From Political Science on the corruption of political power: “What’s mine is mine, what’s yours is negiotable.”
My message to Congressman Grassley is, “Times, they are a changin’.”
Not only will he get a piece of my mind, but those of us who see him for what he is will vote him out of office, as he no longer represents the people.
To all government officials, when I’m forced to choose between the life saving marijuana products and the government’s ignorant incorrect laws, what direction do you think I’m going to choose to save my own life?
The Drug War Is Getting Dumber By The Minute!
He won’t change a thing.
sent him the following. had to resist temptation to not start it out with something like “Get your pasty ignorant redneck ass out of issues you don’t, and apparently either can’t or won’t bother to try to, understand.”
Greetings, Senator
I’d appreciate it if you didn’t speak publicly about medical marijuana policy without researching the issues first. Given your position, it’s readily apparent that you are completely ignorant of the relevant issues.
I’m sure you or your constituents believe that you would lose money or face if medical marijuana were condoned by the federal government, but it’s too late for fear mongering. All you can do now is try to catch up intellectually with the rest of us and educate yourself so as not to appear like more of a buffoon than you already do.
Thanks.
I suggest Mr Grassley read the side effect of RX medications prescribed daily by Dr’s and compare them to the side effect of medical marijuana. If he wants to discuss * do no harm* . I use medical marijuana to provide me relief from the permanent damage and side effects of Rx medications. Perhaps the nice music and flowers blowing in the wind distract Mr Grassley, as they state muscle pain, etc, etc, lymphoma, and even death as side effect of Rx Drugs. Deaths from marijuana alone , zero
Kathy
Okay, first do no harm?!?!? Let’s talk about Serquil causing diabetes. let’s talk about antidepressnats that can cause weight gain. Let’s talk about arthritis medicine that can cause leukemia..the list goes on. Marijuana causes NONE of these.
And FURTHERMORE…it’s my body to with what I fucking WANT and if I think it’s in my best interest and good for my health to smoke marijuana-yes, I said SMOKE–then it’s my constifuckingtutional RIGHT to smoke.
Do I sound pissed off? You bet I am! When I see drug and alcohol counselors outside between appointments smoking cigarettes when they just got done telling people to quit smoking pot it’s the perfect picture of a hypocrite. Stressed out, you say? Fucking sorry about your life. So how is it up to YOU to try to teach ME how to handle stress? And why should I want to be like you?
Want to make a difference, and do it nearly for free? Microlending and Kiva.org might just be for you.
Kiva.org collects small amounts from individuals (as little as $25) and lends the money to poor entrepreneurs with humble business plans. The site allows you to pick who you lend to, and to track their progress throughout the loan. You can watch as loans are repaid and your account is credited. All accounting is in the open, and repayment rates are exceptionally high.
Kiva.org is also a social site. You can chat with other lenders from all over the world by joining one of the over 450 existing communities, or by creating your own. I ‘highly’ suggest the “Hemp Out” user community.
As a strategy for alleviating world poverty, microlending has many advantages over traditional charitable approaches. For lenders, it is much more sustainable since each dollar can be re-loaned countless times. For borrowers it is more respectful, educational, and empowering. Put simply, it’s more effective.
Visit Kiva.org to find out more, and join like-minded people all over the world helping others help themselves!
what the hell is wrong with you?
Fucking conservatives!
Yous stupid bastards have caused us enough trouble!
Grow some balls like your republican ancestors!
INVEST IN CHANGE ASSHOLE!
Lincoln – REPUBLICAN!
Freed the slaves! Saved the Union we know and love!
Go Ahead and continue you fucking pointless prohibition and watch the lives of millions be ruined for your positive position… my ass… the truth is many of the people sitting next to you have more then likely smoked pot…SO KISS MY CHUBBY SICILIAN ASS!
You and your damn bad party politics are why we are in such a mess. So find your own damn reasons and accept what most of our damn country is saying. Legalize and give money to the government and freedom to the people
Message sent. I gave him a good piece of my mind too.
I from Iowa and I did not vote for grassley. so it saddens me to think that we will be the last state to change our marijuana laws
What an ignorant man.
Grassley represents a group of delusional politicians who forget that elected officials are public servents whose job it is to do what the people say. There should be a law that a person cannot take office unless they can pass a 12th grade civics test. (Such a law would have kept George W. Bush out of the White House!)
If the people agree that medical marijuana should be legal, then it should be made law and idiots like Grassley should keep their mouths shut — especially since the laws of other states do not affect him.
What a douchebag.
This is the message I sent to to Sen. Grassley:
Mr. Grassley, I was outraged enough by your remarks today on medical marijuana that I had to write you and let you know that your statements about medical marijuana are wrong. It is one of the safest alternative and natural medicines available to us. It has been proven to help terminally ill patients alleviate their symptoms without any of the dangerous side effects of conventional pharmaceuticals. You are obviously ignorant of the science behind medical marijuana, so please spend some time on the internet at drugpolicy.org, mpp.org, and norml.org researching the REAL information about medical marijuana instead of lies fed to you by “tough on drugs” cops and politicians. Do I need to remind you that many famous and prominent people used marijuana recreationally without being harmed? Carl Sagan, Barack Obama, Tommy Chong, Michael Phelps, Seth Rogen, Arnold Schwarzenegger, I could go on…. but the bottom line is: It is far more safer to do marijuana recreationally than it is to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. Both of these are legal, yet they cause over 400,000 and 80,000 deaths per year, respectively. To date, there have been ZERO deaths directly attributed to marijuana. It’s time for you to get some common sense, Grassley.
How many pot smokers in Iowa voted for him ? You’re never going to change his mind on marijuana. Work to defeat him in the next election. If only we had some kind of national organization to rally around.
I sent Senator Grassley a short electronic letter.
——————–
Dear Senator Grassley,
You must have been on hallucinogenic drugs when you made your statements about cannabis. The dangers of cannabis are inherent with the laws that incarcerate people for its use, not it’s effects. You facts are misguided, and not represented by scientific studies. They are represented in outdated ‘reefer madness’ studies that try to persuade people of the harms of a harmless substance. Please quite your job as senator, and do something more productive.
Sincerely, someone who will never vote for you,
Mr. G
…but… it IS our business what other people do, outside our jurisdiction, when they’re not harming anybody else.
That’s why our next step should be to crack down on all that marijuana in Amsterdam. Right?
Wow I’m an Iowan resident and Grassley is usually very popular amongst my crowd of shithead neo fascist evangelical Iowans…this certainly doesn’t help with any legislative change in my home state to have such an ignorant man representing the state of Iowa
His name is GRASSley.. I mean wtf.. GRASSley. I took a few minutes to write him and gave him a respectable piece of my mind. Chanel the anger with efficiency.
By the way I do want to thank NORML for sponsoring this website where we can all exchange ideas and rant. Sometimes I sound very critical of NORML and wish I could say I didn’t mean it, but I do. I do believe that we have the numbers, just not the organization to make those numbers count at the ballot box. I don’t believe any amount of letters or rational arguments will ever change the laws, if that works it would have happened long ago. Imagine if instead of low cost cable ads, ( I worked in cable advertising for 5 years ) preaching to the choir, Norml spent it’s money defeating just this one particular candidate in his next electorial contest. And could take credit for his defeat. Would it change anything, probably not much. Then in the next election Norml picked just one more congressman up for re-election, and contributed to his or her defeat. THEN YOU WOULD HAVE THIER ATTENTION. If every would-be congressperson knew, KNEW that any drug war foolishness out of their mouth was an automatic 5% of the voters voting for anyone but them, the right to smoke pot would be our next constitutional amendment.
Norml’s next fun contest should be to nominate the DRUG WAR CRIMINAL OF THE YEAR. Any and all members of congress would be eligible. The “winner” would receive the votes of everyone who wants to see pot legal, Go to his opponent. But wait there’s more, Norml people from all across this great land could send monitary contributions to his opponents campaign. It’s one of those contest where the first prize is a new job. It doesn’t matter if his opponent doesn’t want and/or denounces our support, hey he can be DRUG WAR CRIMINAL OF THE YEAR next time. But after he or she saw what we did to his opponent he won’t want to be, unless he wanted to retire anyway. The beauty of this is by choosing only one target each year we could we pour massive recources into one election. Imagine your running for congress and every pot smoker in the U.S. sent just 5 dollars to your opponent.
first
please do tell him what you think many of us in iowa already have
Hey Chuck –
Your attitude stinks worse than Sioux City. Best regards!
JT
affront to the 72 million Americans
More like an affront to ALL Americans, and citizens of the world!
He should know scientists in our very own government did some study and even invented some stuff from marijuana that proves is has great healing abilities:
Patent #6,630,507 “ Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants”
Here’s a quote:
Stubborn old men like this are the reason folks like my Dad, who is getting Alzheimer’s, are being denied all-natural treatments he could use. My Dad basically despises pills from doctors. At 81 and having lived a tough life through the Depression, he ain’t no commie hippie! I lean more that way, not him. But I bet that with the government shame system removed from marijuana he would be willing to try it.
But he needs it now! Not in umpteen years after these dimwit blowhards get out of office and the next generation of less hateful people are elected.
I say folks with some time should investigate Grassley’s not living up to his own name, and see who is greasing his palms.

It looks like he’s getting some money from Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Amgen pharma…

You can see some more info about who is giving him money.
I was offended, insulted, and pissed off. I sent my letter to him just now.
If he wants medicine to do no harm, he shoudl really lok into commonly prescribed drugs such as OxyContin, morphine, and hydrocodone which kill more users a day then cannabis has, well…ever.
i’m from ia. someone close to me got caught with enough weed to fit in their pants pocket and a c.i.(friend) bought less than a handful. the state of ia charged him with 27or32 yrs. worth of offense.sounds more like malice than justice.a plant god put on this earth(which im sure he intended for a purpose other than the govt. to uproot and discard)may cost this man most his life without his wife and three children. its sad how the scales of justice are weighted down by the hands of politics.this man was a bad guy years ago when he was doing real drugs(meth). he went to prison and watched pediphiles go through a revolving door. he came out with intermitent explosive disorder and some form of post traumatic stress disorder. he took dummy drugs which for his disorder were the equivalant of sugar pills.he started smoking cannabis and he was finally able to sit back and relax and crime was the furthest thing from his mind.he became thoughtful and loving helping his friends and family in every way he could(hence the friend/c.i.. its not fair that we dont have the basic right and priveledge to do what we wish with natural resources. (without alteration or harming others).so to all on high please quit referring to the refer plant as a drug. can we call it rehabilitation.
Thank you. I most certainly went to his website and told him what I think. . .
Dear Senator Grassley,
Your comments surrounding the US Attorney General’s statement that the federal government will not undermine a state’s stance on medical marijuana are uneducated and idiotic. (“The first rule of medicine, first do no harm, is being violated by the attorney general by his decision,” said Grassley, whose comments were reported by the Associated Press.)
What harm are you referring to in your comments? The alleviation of chronic suffering from Crohn’s disease? The shrinkage of cancerous tumors? The easement of neuropathic pain?
How can you condemn a person for using the drug as medicine to help relieve pain and suffering, which has been proven by scientists and doctors? Who are you to comment on the wishes of a state you don’t represent?
You are a disgrace to humanity and another example of a professional politician that cares about getting votes but not doing the right thing.
If you cared for the people your represent, you would want to ease their suffering instead of causing them more pain.
Signed,
The People
I’m telling you guys, these prohibitionists are a dying breed, just as racists are a dying breed, just as sexists are a dying breed. Human rights make that inevitable. The freedom to make choices about personal health is a basic human right, or at least it should be.
I really do have a conservative disposition yet I find it so hard to identify with the GOP when it continually chooses to pick battles that are irrelevant. Isn’t the GOP about States Rights?? Shouldn’t we all be about Personal Liberties in the Land of the Free? Please, Chuck, hush!! You embarrass yourself and the GOP with your merit less and blatantly false diatribes.
Grassly believes it is the State that should regulate people’s behavior. I don’t know who his little health care reform group consisted of, but his rhetoric is weak. Is it really the attorney general’s job to uphold the first rule of medicine? Aren’t medical treatments a decision for doctors and patients? Why are prohibitionists allowed to lie and get away with it?
Grassley is the one violating principles and rights, here. “First do no harm” is a good bit of advice for him to follow.
Grassley is dangerous. He represents the same kind of mindset we had during McCarthyism.
He also wants a government database of those of use who use Paypal, eBay, and Amazon.
The link for my name goes to my video response on my blog to Grassley’s ridiculous comment about medicinal marijuana.

called his council bluffs office and a few others and left some angry messages. this guys a douche bag.
Dont forget this is the same “gentleman” who proposed that certain people of AIG “commit suicide” …
Not the most rational of our public servants from the start.
Though I do give him credit for creating tasty sound bites and a good laugh.
Charles grassley, is a dinosour, What a poor example of American poly-ticians not paying attention to the people. This man is only concerned with Lobbiests in his federally subsidized welfare state.(ADM and big corn) He is to old and ignorant to educate himself, why do we allow people like this to exist in our goverment. For the corporate, by the corporate,of the corporate, that is his motto. What a fool.
I encourage everyone to contact Grassely.
I just sent him some quotes from Judge Francis Young.
Maybe he has a financial interest in keeping marijuana illegal.
“I Owe Alot To Iowa Pot”
I got my 2 cents worth in too! I hope his mail box crashes! Coming from that state and listening to him for years it’s no suprise. He’s a farmer so you would think he would have a better outlook on cannabis? Naw! Not that dork.
YO!!! NORML!!! I’m with Mr. VoteLikeaBeast. Our efforts would go further if we became organized enough to strike out by voting and campagning against prohibitionist govt. officials. If we can start costing some of them their jobs…..yea….I think “legalization” would come to us quicker…..might slow down some of that capitol hill cannabis bashing, too.
I hope the good people of IOWA vote that asshole out of office. and i live in michigan where there moving slow on the medical cannabis program . I am grateful that 63 percent of the voter’s in michigan voted for this program.
I believe that prohibitionists should just issue a sincere apology to America, take a deep bow, then either retire or commit suicide.
This must be the “party of individual freedom” I keep hearing so much about.
Ok people, this man obviously has a skewed thought process, but cussing him out doesn’t help anything. The logical thing to do is to find a great, well thought out argument for this guy, and send it to him. When he sees all of these crazy, angry comments what do you believe he will think? “Oh, heres some more stupid potheads going off about weed again!” Lets not approach this in the wrong way. This man has his freedom of speech, and deserves an explination just like all of us why he is 110% wrong.
Sorry, but Grassley could’nt care less. He represents big biz, he has for a long time, and that’s where it stops. It’s up to the residents of Iowa to help the nation be rid of him. (((CITIZENS of IOWA)))…do the right thing next election.

The reason why “users” are seeking treatment is because they HAVE TO , it is what happens when you get busted, the government makes you attend these stupid classes as a part of your incarceration / rehabilitation process.

WHAT DO YOU THINK NORML IS ??
sen. gassley is simply reminding us why we dumped the last bunch of bible thumping hypocrites (republicans) including their president from office. until this party finally rids itself of this far right fringe it will continue its decline. i have written all of my elected representives and let them know i will not support another ‘prohibitionist’ candidate.
I wrote mr. Grassley,
“I will not be voting for you if you do not change. Your lack of compassionate towards those in need of medical marijuana to make life a little easier is astonishing. How can you take such a ignorant stance towards medical marijuana?
Your at the age where stubborn old men don’t change their views. Maybe Karma will bite you in your ass and you will find out you have incurable cancer and in a frenzy to find a substance that affords you a better way of life, you will find yourself medicating with the very plant GOD PUT ON THIS EARTH.
I would never wish that on anyone, but you Sir obviously don’t think and research what you speak on and that is incredibly irresponsible for someone in your position.
It’s not too late for you to turn this around. Make a difference, not a problem.
Respectfully yours,
Mike R. Smith
Anamosa IA”
I wrote to Grassley and suggested he consult a 37 year toker like me before he makes a further ass out of himself.
Mr. Grassley! You just put your job on the line! He really should have looked around.Iowa ditches are full of wild hemp(Dont come here and smoke it, you’ll have a bad headache}. It didnt get there by accident.I would say this state many years ago probably grew industrial hemp. This state is full of marijuana consumers. We dont just grow corn here! His facts are as always ,fearmongering and untrue. The old ways are washing away Mr . Grassley. Step up or step down!
As an IOWAN,I have also sent Mr. Grassley my thoughts on his position. I DID NOT VOTE FOR HIM!NOR will I vote for anyone that doesnt consider a change in drug policy.
I addressed just this very issue here:

chuck-grassley-medical-marijuana-and-small-government
I too have sent an e-mail to Grassley. Below is the message I sent to him. Sorry about the AIG comments at first, but I think it all ties together.
Chuck Grassley:
As a young professional, I find you and your opinions out of touch with the American People who you represent. I find your comments regarding AIG executives most disturbing.
I Quote you: “The first thing that would make me feel a little bit better towards them if they’d follow the Japanese model and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things–resign, or go commit suicide.”
I think you ought to take a long look in the mirror and take your own advice.
Comments like the above should not be tolerated. I can not believe you were voted into office.
I am also disgusted with your lack of facts when speaking about Medical Cannabis (Marijuana).
I quote you again: “The first rule of medicine, first do no harm, is being violated by the attorney general by his decision,”
How can you justify this statement? Research from Nixon’s administration?
I think you ought to do more research into what you are talking about. This reminds me of a shoot first, ask questions later, type of mentality.
Bottom line is that I am writing you to tell you that your types of politics are coming to an end. The more you resist what America wants, the more we will fight you, become involved, and protest against you. I hate to tell you this, but you are only strengthening our cause.
So delete this e-mail, continue to spout out disgraceful opinions, and do what you do best.
LIE
I can assure you, with your attitude; you will not hold your position for long.
Tim
Thanks to all who are sending a message to Assley.
His name is “GRASSley”, how ironic!
Senator Grassley,
Your pre-emptive attitude toward states that have passed compassionate use laws to allow terminally-ill or chronically ill patients (such as myself) the use of Medical Marijuana, your need to undermine and criminalize such people is so underhanded and reprehensible that I am nothing less than livid.
I have enjoyed many pleasant days and miles visiting and traveling in your wonderful state of Iowa. Two of my favorite places, other than Des Moines (a wonderful city) are Audubon (birthplace of Bill “C.W. McCall” Fries), and the Lansing Farm, home of The Field of Dreams.
However, until such time as you learn your place as a public SERVANT, and not a political dictator, and back down from your attempts to undermine the rights of voters in other states, not to mention the policies of our President and the Head of The DEA in terms of no longer prosecuting those who use marijuana in a responsible manner, I’ll do the only thing I can to get my point across: I’ll STOP spending my tourism dollars in Iowa. I always thought Iowa was just about the friendliest state I’ve ever visited. Guess I was wrong.
You need to stop attempting to undermine the lives of innocent citizens, and you need to apologize to the President and the American people.

IT IS, AMONG SIMILAR THINGS, CRUEL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL, IMMORAL AND INHUMANE TO DEPRIVE PEOPLE OF TREATMENT THAT WORKS FOR THEM. ALTHOUGH A VERY MILD TOXIN WITH MINIMAL SIDE EFFECTS (NOT EVEN ONE OVERDOSE DEATH), MARIJUANA HAS BEEN USED WITH GREAT SUCCESS BY COUNTLESS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD SINCE THE DAWN OF RECORDED TIME. SENATOR HOLDER, YOU ARE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE FACTS, HISTORY, THE CONSTITUTION AND BILL OF RIGHTS. I SUGGEST YOU REVIEW ALL OF THESE AND RECONSIDER YOUR POSITION.
ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE TO SITE MODERATOR: I MEANT TO TYPE GRASSLEY NOT HOLDER AS THE SECOND WORD, NEXT TO LAST SENTENCE. SORRY, MY MISTAKE.
what a complete moron senator grassley is. i believe the only reason prohibitionists are against ending the war on drugs because they are prolly on the take from the cartels. think about it the facts are there that if we legalize and end the war on drugs violent crimes and other crimes will decrease dramatically. i thought america is about saving and helping people. corruption and greed stands in our way of ending this disaster of a war. its a war on people and the people who are against legalization in my opinion are allies to the drug cartels plain and simple. we must expose these dirty un-patriotic people that are running our country, its time for us to take our country back and get SMART, not tough on the war on drugs. all in favor of ending 70 plus years of failure, shout america home of the freeeeeeeeeeeee.
ok where to begin? Ignorance is bliss n Grassley is an ignorant old ass. So this morning, after my kids were gone to school & i had my morning bowl, i got on the phone. I accidentally(for them) reached a live one, Denise, at Grassleys Siouxer City office. Surprise! She didn’t want to hear any part of legalizing marijuana. Economic, medical or any other she informed me “Marijuana is an illegal drug.” Fine i agree it is illegal however that is the reason for my call i want to see change. I by the way am sick &tired of marijuana being referred to as a ‘drug’; can’t we call it a plant? It is what it is. Drugs come from labs, plants come from God. Anyhow the long n short of it is TIME FOR GRASSley TO GO & IA to grow. I live here and am willing to do any and everything i can to help insure next election Sen. Grassley receives his retirement benefits. I don’t think he earned his pension but definatly his way out of office! Hey Iowan stoners it is time to make it to our polls and vote him and his friends, like Steve King, out of their seats. I know it can be cold but it is worth it. First tho we need help finding a popular democrat to run against him. otherwise the old, brain- washed, set in their ways republican Iowans will still vote for him. And Grassley will still be representing us- how pathetic! Help there has to be someone in this state that can take the republican vote and be for legalizing marijuana too. Any Suggestions whom? Lets get their name on the ballot! If anyone has any helpful ideas on getting GRASSley out please we need HELP…
All I have to say to Mr. Grassley is NOBODY wants to deal w/me when i’m outta herb. I absolutely refuse to take the pharmaceutical poison the drs. want me to take. I have depression and I am bi-polar and w/out marijuana to even me out, I cannot function normally. So Grassley any time you want to spend a day in my head and body without cannabis to help, you go right ahead, you won’t like it.
Don’t forget to donate!
My message:
———-
Hello, Mr. Grassley.
My name is [/blank], and I wrote this e-mail in regards to your comments made about medicinal marijuana.
A Lot has been said about this topic, but I’m willing to Give You The Benefit Of The Doubt (This side-note and capitalization of words were not included in my sent message, they are for the benefit of the reader here at NORML) and request instead that you help us to understand your reasons for stance on the issue.
My question being: Where are you receiving your information on medicinal marijuana for you to have such strong disapproval for it’s usage?
Are you unaware that terminal patients who are in pain use marijuana when the run-of-the-mill drugs are not effective enough? Or the potential money waiting to be generated and/or saved by legalizing marijuana for recreational use?
Four-hundred-and-forty-thousand people die from tobacco related ailments and Eighty-thousand from alcohol each year in the united states. (These numbers are based on Drugwarfacts.org’s report on yearly drug attributed deaths and other counts of death)
If you will visit the website Drugwarfacts.org, you will see that Marijuana in any form (Medicinal or recreational) is BY FAR more safe then many every-day activities:
Tobacco 435,000*1
Poor Diet and Physical Inactivity 365,000*1
Alcohol 85,000*1
Microbial Agents 75,000*1
Toxic Agents 55,000*1
Adverse Reactions to Prescription Drugs 32,000*2
Suicide 30,622*3
Incidents Involving Firearms 29,000*1
Motor Vehicle Crashes 26,347*1
Homicide 20,308*4
Sexual Behaviors 20,000*1
All Illicit Drug Use, Direct and Indirect 17,000*1, *5
Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Such As Aspirin 7,600*6
Marijuana 0*7
Even when taking into account that some of these deaths may be exaggerated to one degree or another, marijuana would—and does!—continue to stand as the lowest cause of death behind even those attributed to such everyday drugs like Aspirin.
Not to mention the 10-14 Billion estimated dollars in taxes alone that would be generated annually when marijuana is legalized for recreational use.
(Jobs, money, lower crime-rate and more tax dollars just waiting to be tapped)
I beseechingly ask this of you sir: Why, in the face of all current research, popular opinion, financial gain, and preservation of life do you STILL stand by your views that marijuana—in any form—is wrong?
Help us to understand you, sir.
———-
If I could hazard a guess though, I believe his reasons are one or more of the following:
1#: He’s stuck in 1970 when he wasn’t peeing dust.
2#: He’s being suckered by “Tough on Drugs! LULZ!” cops.
3#: He’s got nothing to his name the makes him stand out in a room, so he tries to be the biggest idiot he can be to get people to notice him.
4#: He’s being backed by anti-cannabis organizations.
5#: A stoner kicked his ass at some point in time. (I’d just key his car in the image of a marijuana leaf; I can’t advocate the assault of the old and mentally retarded) (NOTE: I DO NOT mean this in a disrespectful way in ANY sense of it’s usual social stigma (and I would expect better from other “stoners” regardless—not that I honestly believe anyone here would take it the wrong way, mind you)
6#: Someone keyed his car in the image of a marijuana leaf.
7#: He doesn’t realize that Jesus smoked marijuana.
8#: He doesn’t approve of anything that makes sense. (“If I did things that made sense, why the hell did I become a politician?”)
9#: He’s degraded into Alzheimer’s and dementia without anyone knowing from a total lack of recreational cannabis in his life.
10#: He’s an idiot.
I’m still holding out for some kinda NORML event that we can rally behind on 4/20. With everything that’s happened this year, I honestly do feel that now is our best time to gain momentum and to start breaking down walls.

Let him have it folks. I send tons of emails to officials and use my real name and location. I urge you all to do the same.
I’m tired of being pushed around, this is my country also and I intend to stand up for it.
Other than preaching to the choir about how much I disagree with the total Grassley is, I will say that he probably made his remarks because a marijuana/hemp crop might potentially compete with crops grown in Iowa.
Keep in mind that most of the time its always about money with politicians – especially the likes of Grassley. If there were no financial impact on his state, he probably wouldn’t give it a second thought.
As an Iowan. I would like to hsve Bill Fink as an iowa senator again. his veiws on pot are twice as good as this grassly
Um guys… California will be voting on whether or not to legalize marijuana in ten days. In case you haven’t heard. This could be the thing that causes a chain reaction of freedom across the US, lets not get distracted with this Assley guy he is of a soon to be forgotten era… We have bigger fish to fry!
I do not want to give him a piece of my mind. I need it for the insanity of this so called PROHIBITION AGAINST MARIJUANA. Senator Grassley is just another politician with the ORWELLIAN MENTALITY. Who the hell is he to judge who needs what medication we need to be on. MARIJUANA DOES NOT KILL PEOPLE! HE should check out THE BIG PHARM MEDICINES THAT DO KILL PEOPLE. THE HYPOCRISY OF THE GOVERNMENT WILL NEVER END. LEGALIZE THE WEED FOR MEDICINE AND RECREATIONAL USE!
I am actually a pretty conservative guy and typically can say that I am proud of my party. However, when it comes to the drug war I am very ashamed of the adamant and ignorant stance we take. We are supposed to be economically conscientious, yet we are fine with the immense cost of this war with absolutely no gains. Above all, I am pro-Freedom. Allow people to do drugs if they chose to, tax it, regulate it.
Turn a losing war and massive debt into a income source. Protect the streets by taking money out of the hands of drug dealers who may be dangerous, both in our country and outside. Protect the users by ensuring that they are taking what they want, and not something laced with dangerous substances.
It is absolutely hypocritical to allow alcohol and tobacco yet outlaw marijuana. Not only would I rather hang around a stoner than a drunk because of their more comical nature, they are also much more able to control their actions, and thus are much less dangerous as well.
It is incredibly sad to hear that people are still being shot by the police to date, unarmed, simply for possession of weed. Last Wednesday, Derek Copp, a GVSU student was shot in his upper left chest when police raided his room for marijuana suspicion. He was completely unarmed and anyone who knew him would say he was not violent in nature either. This is appalling. It is time for change, and luckily it does seem to be happening across the nation. It is not enough for it to be just medicinally legal, it simply must just be legalized.
It is shameful to have laws that can literally ruin lives for people who are in no way hurting other people. In many states, the charge of possession can follow you for far too long, and if you happen to be a college student trying to learn something, and receiving federal loans…you can say goodbye to that education. I guess the government would rather have more people be less educated in this country, so that they can control us more with such out-dated and pointless laws such as the outlawing of marijuana.
It is sad to say that I hope this current economic struggle continues, but in some ways I do. Out of struggle of the Great Depression we over-turned the alcohol prohibition, and I believe that if this one continues, marijuana might also be lifted to the position it should be, a regulated substance like tobacco and alcohol. It is sad, however, that only in a time of crisis does the nation’s government awaken to their senses and fix the things that need fixing. The light at the end of the tunnel is growing brighter, but waiting for it to come and doing nothing will not move us anywhere. We must walk towards the end of the tunnel, and in this case our legs are our voices. The louder we get, and the more focused we are, the sooner we will leave the darkness of prohibition behind us.
Not arresting people violates do no harm?
This guy is an idiot. 1. The hypocratic oath applies to the medical field not the law enforcement field. 2. The science is in and the medical benefits of cannabis has been proven. Of course as a Republican he’s probably anti-science as well(not to say I love Democrats, just that this anti-science attitude tends to be Republican).
I didn’t give Grassley the benefit of the doubt. I already know where he stands. As an Iowan and thus his constituent I felt obligated to rip him a new one, respectfully of course, with restraint, and as eloquently as humanly possible. Both Harkin and Grassley are mostly gigantic embarrassments to Iowa, at least on the issues that matter to me.
The AIG comments were pretty bizarre too, come to think of it.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and has the freedom to express it when asked. And since we heard what
Grassley’s was,we need to start cultivating his replacement and he needs to update his resume. These staunch anti-marijuana elected officials can be replaced, and there is less of them every year. If you
contact your elected officials and they respond in a
negative stance on what is important to you, don’t wait, start putting up posters calling for his replacement them where he’ll see them.
Plant day April 1,2009. Put your pot in the ground, build a hydro in your closet, because we need to shut down the cartels from the marijuana market. And we don’t need guns and gunships to do it with,or 1.4 billion tax dollars,we
can do it with a hoe and a water can. When you remove the market, you remove the problem. It is the only way you can be sure that your not supporting the cartels.
Most people see their dealer about 15 minutes a week, and
if he told them his weed was grown on the moon,by nasa,
they would probably believe him. But unless your dealer picked your pot out of his yard, right in front of you,you don’t know where the pot came from,or who is
making the money. STOP the BUY,,,GROW YOUR OWN!!!
It is a viable,non-violent solution for a stagnant,violent situation.
Pot smokers vote for prohibitionist.
Prohibitionist DO NOT vote for pot smokers.
McDonalds = Burger King
Coke = Pepsi
Bud Lite = Miller Lite
Clinton = Reagan
Charles Grassley = Tom Harkin
Before all you take the “grow your own” road please take a moment to consider the very harsh consequences of manufacturing a controlled substance.
Penalties for manufacture make penalties for possession seem benign. I’m not suggesting to anyone what to do or not to do, BUT BE AWARE.
Also remember, don’t send any signed letter to your congressman that you would not also send to your sheriff.
The movement NEEDS registered voters, not disenfranchised felons. Once you’ve been busted for manufacture you can no longer help the cause in the only way that counts. When non-smokers tell you you’re contributing to the violence in Mexico (and they will), remind them that it is the law that makes marijuana a crime so lucrative to kill for, not the weed itself.
Just finished a gangster film festival at my house. Watched “The Public Enemy” “Little Caesar” and the Roaring Twenties. Each one began with a written admonition that Prohibition ( of alcohol circa 1920’s) was responsible for the violence and unsavory characters
depicted in those great films that shocked audiences in the 30’s.
The Goverment makes more money on it while its pushed on the streets.Thats why you are fighting a losing battle plus Jesus want allow it to Happen.By the way obama is not Jesus.Jesus Christ is the way and the only way to Joy and Happiness not marijuna.Turn to him before its to late.
Grassley says “The first rule of medicine, first do no harm”. Wish he lived by that rule when it comes to pharmaceutical drugs. Sounds like Grassley likes to live by a double standard. Vote this hypocrite out !
Norml could really use a supporter with a name like Grass-ely. lol
Come on guys! Give The Senator a break. He is obviously only regurgitating what he was spoon fed as an ignorant child.
C’mon Grassley, I don’t usually call anybody a name out of respect, BUT, your comments on Cannabis are wrong and bad. so I have to say to you Mr. Grassley, “YOU SUCK”…
from a 60 year old consumer of Medical Cannabis.
I suspected and was right to look into this fellows top contributor. Amgen…. and what do they make? Medicine. When in doubt search top contributors of politicians who are questionable.
http://www.sourcewatch.org
According to his website linked he has one office in DC and 6 in Iowa….yet his website has this information ” For whistleblowers interested in establishing communication with Senator Grassley regarding wrongdoing within federal agencies or misuse of public dollars please go to the Government Oversight page under Issues and Legislation for more information.”
WOW!
Of course you notice that he doesn’t really want to have anything to do with the problem.
ignorance has highlighted this mans entier career, he’s only been re-elected in iowa due to misconceptions by poor to middle class republicans that belive he’s a working mans senator. this is far from the truth. he has played iowa like a fine harp for many years with his irrelevent bureaucracatic resistance to marijuana on the grounds that pot is EVIL!!! that pot causes manic drug crazed HOP HEADS roam the iowa country side, murdering poor farmers and killing cows by the dozen.choping down corn to try to smoke it to get a fix! give me a mother fucking break “GRASS”ley! Stick to iowa legislation, but dont impose your morals on the rest of us in the name of my native state
#98, Jose
Why give him a break? If he has been spoonfed “male bovine feces” as a child maybe it is high time to change his diet!
Village. Idiot.
http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/summary.php?cid=n00001758
This will explain the Senator’s entire position. 2 of his top 5 campaign contributors are Pharmacutecal companies and health care representatives. He’s just a company man that’s all. Cheap, easily obtainable medical marijuana effects the bottom line for these companies. They paid to have their voices heard louder than ours and that is what they are getting with Senator GRASS-ley (oh the irony)
here’s what I wrote to the dumb ass:
Today I read your comment against the Attorney Generals decision to no longer authorize the federal justice department to undermine state medical marijuana laws. I suppose all these legalized prescription drugs aren’t doing anyone any harm either? The truth is that they do more to be honest. Not to mention that they ARE addictive. If you are going to attack medical marijuana at least come up with a more valid arguement, but have fun finding one. We the people aren’t as stupid as you think we are.
SCARRY ISN’T IT,guys like this telling us what we should & shouldn’t do . That’s the problem . Being a PEACEFUL happy person is against their laws.
I like many others wrote to Senator Grassley. I told him that probibition is working so well that the country should be drug free in about a thousand years or so. I also stated that people in Washington are not known for being in touch with reality. Prohibition has brought us to organized crime that now has enough money, manpower and weapons to take on many of the governments south of our border. If prohibition continues the money will keep flowing to these gangs. Are you sure thats what you want? Legalization, regulation and taxation seems like a much better way forward.

To number 110. Your kids probably have the same IQ as you do, like FOREST GUMP. If your kids are under 21 why are they smoking marijuana in the first place? We the people who support legalization, do not encourage people to smoke if they are under 21. You sound like a good for nothing mother who cannot control your own kids. Do not blame us, blame yourself and your kids for better judgement. We all make our own decisions on what we put into our bodies. The tolerance in the Netherlands is different than the United States in which the United States could follow. And by the way what did your teenage friend overdose on, I know it was not marijuana. Besides that I have two sons myself, and I taught them in their early teens about drug abuse and no problems from them. So put a plug in your pie hole, and learn the real truth about pot you AMERICAN COMMUNIST!

By The Way, ANNE,
there are OTHER botanical-medicines that are far deadlier and cause much more memory-impairment than cannabis!!!
And THESE, (and NOT the safer CANNABIS), are LEGAL in most states!

there should be term limits senators. this is a guy who got elected long ago. times have changed. he has not.
in his last election, he ran virtually unaposed. against some guy with no money, no name, no face. noone knew who he was. yet grassley found it necessary to spend about 5.5 million $ to win that election.
this ignorant redneck will be representing me until he dies 🙁
TO NeuroGenesis1:29 I do appreciate your support and enjoyed blogs 114 and 116. I am Biblically literate, that is why the way I am. I respect people who are religious, but sometimes people go over the edge. I am not better than anyone else who walks on the face of this planet. What people call a supreme being I just call nature. 420 ALL THE WAY.
I live in Iowa, and I am glad I made the educated decision to NOT vote for Grassley. He’s an ignorant republican, and he has refuted my letters pertaining to marijuana issues for years with false information and misleading statistics. Representatives like him make me feel embarrassed to be an Iowan.
Buggsy,
– – The last three lines were addressing Tim’s #95 blog-post,
(about Jesus wanting to keep cannabis illegal), and Senator Gr@ssless as well,
since he resides in an agricultural, Bible-belt state, but denies the validity of one of nature’s finest botanical provisions;
instead, suppressing it in lieu of artificial pharmaceutical counterfeits and alcohol.
– – The beauty, complexity and consistency of nature,
(down to the molecular, atomic and subatomic levels), is very amazing,
however, those who invoke the name of “Gawd” or “Jeezus” to demonize and deny us the Creator’s gifts are horribly misguided!

How can someone compare marijuana use to violence and rape. The only violence caused by marijuana is the fact that it is illegal and money can be made on this cause it’s illegal. Think about it how many people do you see that are high on marijuana looking for a fight because they are high or raping individuals because they are high. Not to many. Now look at alcohol. When people drink they usually get very loud and are looking to fight someone or looking to take advantage of a someone lookin for sex. It is easier for kids to get this drug than it is for them to get alcohol which is legal. The war on drugs is a complete failure and our politicians need to realize this. When our economy is as bad as it is like today and millions of people are out of jobs, many more good Americans are going to find some way to support themselves. If this involves selling marijuana than they will so they can pay there bills. We are tired of all the bull shit comercials that are against marijauna. Half of them are completely untrue. EX: I was watching one comerical and they said that this kid got so high that he let his friends draw all over him. Another example was these kids were getting fast food and they slammed on the gas when they left hitting a girl on a bycicle Im sorry the only time people let other people draw on them is when they are passed out drunk and don’t know they are getting drawn on. Marijuana users are not any worse than speeders. We all know that everyone speeds and this causes more deaths than marijuna has ever caused. Why not put speeders in jail too. That way every single person living in the U.S. including you are in jail and know what its like. The purpose of police is to prevent violence and to keep the public safe. Why not protect the people and prevent gang violence be legalizing marijuana. Marijuana is so easy to find. Why not start regulating marijuana that way our government can earn money from taxing it. Oh wait, lets just keep it illegal and encourage gangs and drug cartels to sell this substance and make unremarkabe profits off of it. As for marijuana being a gateway drug thats all bull shit. The only reason people would say this is cause they put marijuana in the same category of harsh drugs. I guarentee most individuals started off with alcohol, so shouldnt alcohol be a gateway drug. Oh, wait alcohol is legal so they would never expect alcohol to be a gateway drug. Its time to end prohibition on marijuana and quit supporting gangs who make money off of selling marijuana. I have been to so many classes on marijuana and have come to realize that the people who need education on marijuana is the people who don’t use it. It’s really pathetic when you go to marijuana classes and they start talking about meth, cocaine, heroin, and shit like that. When the only thing that you have ever done was marijuana and you have no plans of ever trying any of that other shit. The truth is that the people who have never done marijuana need informed about it too. Instead of letting the bull shit comercials do the talking because the comercials are lying. Since you are against legalization of marijuana how about I suggest that you make everyone take classes on marijuana that way they can know the real truth about it.

– – My ‘gateway-drug’ was caffeine and THE ensuing sleep deprivation.
Refuse to drink ALCOHOL these days to remedy the first problem . . .

instead of the term ‘Marijuana’,
which was coined to simultaneously defame Hispanics and the herb as well),
has NONE of the drawbacks of alcohol,
(UNLESS it’s COMBINED with alcohol, of course!
And then the pot gets blamed for the ALCOHOL’s dangers).
– – The only valid reason I could see for cannabis, (‘Marijuana’), being compared or equated with hard-drugs is for the same reason one would associate ORANGE JUICE,
(‘Naranjo de Jugo’), with hard-liquor,
(These smooth-out the harsh side-effects of hard-drugs and hard-liquor, respectively . . .).
– – I really hate that MISLEADING fast-food drive-thru PSA also,
It’s so BACKWARDS;
– Those kids ran into the girl on the bike, were disrespectful to the fast-food employee BECAUSE they’re disrespectful, irresponsible jerks TO BEGIN WITH, regardless!
(They only smoke weed ’cause it’s illegal, and wouldn’t do so otherwise . . . ).
– In other words, correlation does NOT equal causation. 🙂
