Mexican Ambassador Says Legalizing Pot Is A "Debate That Needs To Be Taken Seriously." Mr. President, Are You Listening?

When President Barack Obama was asked recently whether he believed that regulating cannabis would raise tax revenue while reducing illicit drug profits for Mexican cartels, he responded with derision.
He may be the only one laughing.
This Sunday on CBS’s Face the Nation, Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan was posed the question of whether legalizing marijuana would curb the surging violence associated with the trafficking of pot by Mexican drug gangs. Admirably, the ambassador did not answer with even the slightest hint of a chuckle.
“[T]hose who would suggest that some of these measures (legalization) be looked at understand the dynamics of the drug trade,” Sarukhan said. (You can view the exchange at 2:22.) “This is a debate that needs to be taken seriously — that we have to engage in on both sides of the border. … It is a debate that has to be taken on with seriousness.”
President Obama, are you listening?

  1. I am glad to see how dramatic of an impact the marijuana lobby’s are starting to have. I am graduating this year and am not looking forward to many companies drug policy.
Most of the world wants this. America is the thing keeping these insane drug laws in place. Change is happening. Keep up the good work NORML.

  2. President Obama is back in Mexico with a pocket full of our tax dollars to fight the DRUG WAR on the border. He probably went there to get on the Mexican Ambassador ass about making marijuana LEGAL in the United States and Mexico. It seems like U.S. is more DRACONION on MARIJUANA PROHIBITION then the third world countries. When they start to get the ball rolling, there is UNCLE SAM with a pocket full of our tax dollars. Yes, we will give you millions to eradicate marijuana. Since there is no light at the end of the tunnel on preventing marijuana use, might as well legalize and regulate and tax it. 420 ALL THE WAY!

  3. No Obama is not listening to you or me. He listens to his masters and they say NO to legalization cause they are making so much money selling it illegally ! Plus how else are they going to further their agenda like increasing the police state and militarizing society !

  4. when will people wake up ! nothing works better then regulation and control ! if it was legal organized crime wont cease to exist on marijuana over nite concentrate on bad drugs !
Liberty is to the collective body, what health is to every individual body. Without health no pleasure can be tasted by man; without liberty, no happiness can be enjoyed by society.

  5. Obama said “We cant stop it all” More less guns and coke your out.. keep the money and the weed moving.

  6. Two of the problems are that as we know–Money talks. The Us of A gives each state and Senators/Representatives BIG money to fight the war on Drugs. It’s like a little kid, not getting that lollipop on Saturday night if they were good during the week. It’s that fear of not getting their allowance. The second problem is the ole guard is still brainwashed from the ignorance they inherited. Elder Legislators find it easier going ho-hum because it’s easier and pride causes ignorance to continue. If they were wise they would look past their blinders and see that research causes a real understanding. I wonder how many of those who are elected to follow the footsteps of their American forefather, such as Washington and Jefferson, to find that their gardens grew Cannabis! The Declaration of Independence was written on hemp parchment. The Merrimack warship sails were made from hemp…..etc.
I call to mind about the Boston Tea Party. Do you remember why it happened? look it up. It’s what is happening now. We must stand up and throw the current tea (US Gov. ignorance) overboard!

  7. I am so tired of the whole debate. Ive read everything I can on the pros and cons of this war on drugs and I dont see the up side even for the uptight right wing, how do in this day and age can you keep something like pot a crime. did god break the law when he created it? What a bunch of horse crap. Ill tell ya what Im gonna do Im gonna plant seeds every where. You do the same and end this shit .

  8. Obama is nothing but a liar and a coward so don’t count on him for shit. we have to make it to where he has no other option but to legalize it, and stop torturing Americans. That is what it is torture you sit in prison-solitary confinement for months after loosing your home, kids, job and tell me that’s not torture. you sit in their and try to think about what you have done wrong knowing that you haven’t done nothing to harm anyone and i am still here. What kind of fucked up place do we live in America?

  9. The drug cartels own the country, that’s why they’ll never willingly legalize it until we force them to do so.
They know what prohibition does: it creates crime and removes taxes from flowing into government coffers. They learned that with alcohol prohibition.
But if they legalized weed they’d cut off 99.9% of the DEA’s jobs, and they couldn’t arrest nonviolent minorities to throw in prison to replace lost slave labor with prison labor.

  10. My biggest beef is the way the legal industry exploits any drug use. Some pot like the kind the Gov’t distributes from time to time,is not good for you nor does it make you feel good. Some hydroponic high grade makes me feel rotten. So,I tend to try out anything for sale first.I would not recommend buying pre-rolled pot.You do not know what is in it.But,if the State Gov’t regulates quality in levels of cannabis, then one can gauge which one will work best for the best feel w/good results. What in the hell is wrong with that? The war on drugs hurts too many people and needs stopped ASAP.Obama can’t be that naive not to know a pig with lipstick on is still a pig.Step up to the plate Obama. This one needs remedy now!

  11. I think our government fully understands the benefits to the people and to our tax system of legalizing marijuana. I strongly believe they are an integral part of how the illegal drug trade works and I believe they are in cohesion which is why it would make no sense for ‘them’ to legalize it. They aren’t stupid, they aren’t stubborn, They are professional con-men and crooks. don’t get it twisted. They know exactly what they are doing and how they are doing it… research CIA cocaine and heroin drug deals, it’s been going on a long time, there is ALOT of money in the ‘illegal’ drug trade and they would like to keep it that way

  12. if we all just started growing weed what could they do, you can’t put the whole us in prison….
lets go kids get them seeds going
