On three separate occasions, the White House has asked the public to provide them with feedback on the top public policy questions facing the nation. And on three separate occasions, the leading question for the new administration — as chosen on and voted by the American public — pertained to the legalization of marijuana.
One might examine these results and conclude that marijuana law reform is an issue that is becoming increasingly popular with America’s voters. Of course if you’re Fox News, you interpret these results another way.
Obama’s Effort at Online Transparency Stymied by Internet Trolls

“Three and a half million people participated in the event, but the ‘trolls’ had their way: Following a coordinated campaign by marijuana advocates to vote their topic to the top of the list, questions on the future of the U.S. dollar and the rising unemployment rate were superseded by questions about legalizing pot as an economic remedy.”
Got to hand it to the folks at Fox. (PS: For the record, Wired makes the same accusation!) National polls show that the public’s support for legalization has never been greater. Leading political and media pundits are now demanding that we end the criminal prohibition of pot. Yet despite all evidence to the contrary, the old guard at Fox News cynically clings to the notion that nobody supports taxing and regulating marijuana aside from a handful of “Internet trolls.” We report, you decide, huh?
Of course, Fox News didn’t come up with this spin on their own. After all, it was White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs — yes, the same Robert Gibbs who couldn’t come up with one valid reason to oppose regulating pot besides “uh” — who initially tried to downplay the popularity of marijuana law reform, telling the New York Times that “advocates for legalizing marijuana, … includ[ing] NORML, had mounted a drive to rack up votes for the question.”
So let’s set the record straight shall we. On the afternoon of March 25, with only a few hours left for voting in the White House’s poll, I posted the following blog to NORML’s homepage: “Obama ‘Open For Questions’ About The Economy — Ask Him To Support Taxing And Regulating Marijuana.” Here’s what I wrote in my post:
The topic of this week’s forum is the national economy, and not surprisingly, many of you have already put forward questions to the President regarding the taxation and regulation of cannabis.
For example, the most popular question in the category “Budget” is: “With over 1 out of 30 Americans controlled by the penal system, why not legalize, control, and tax marijuana to change the failed war on drugs into a money making, money saving boost to the economy?”
Similarly, under the topic “Financial Stability,” most asked question is: “Would you support the bill currently going through the California legislature to legalize and tax marijuana, boosting the economy and reducing drug cartel related violence?”
Marijuana-related questions also top the “Green Jobs and Energy” category, and are among the top vote-getters on the site overall.
That’s right, the questions pertaining to marijuana law reform were already the top vote-getters before NORML ever put pen to paper!
Further, NORML at no time engaged in any sort of “coordinated campaign” (to quote Fox) to “rack up votes” (to quote the Obama administration). NORML did not list-serv news of the White House poll to our tens of thousands of e-zine subscribers, nor did we publicize the poll to the hundreds of thousands of people that have joined us on Facebook and Myspace. And to the best of my knowledge, no other marijuana law reform group did so either.
In short, there was no orchestrated “campaign” and there is no grand conspiracy. The simple explanation for the White House poll results is this: Marijuana law reform is immensely popular with the public. That’s why we win initiatives — time and time again. And that’s why when the public is asked whether they support ending prohibition they say ‘yes’ — in overwhelming numbers!
As my colleague Scott Morgan writes at stopthedrugwar.org: “This is a movement, and it isn’t going away. Our issue is bigger than the organizations backing it.” He’s right.
Americans are demanding a serious and objective political debate regarding the merits of legalizing marijuana. They have come to this conclusion on their own — simply by witnessing the failure of the drug war all around them.
President Obama, the time for adolescent jokes and giggles is over. Fox News, the time for insults has long passed. The public is serious; why aren’t you?
You can’t trust Fox News. They are the mouthpiece for the evangelical Republicans. They are the reason Republicans will continue to lose elections because they don’t care about small government or liberty, they care about controlling your life based upon the false belief that America is a Christian puritanical nation.
First you want to take the profit out of it? Then you want to tax it? To hell with that.
Seems I just read a report that says 96 million Americans have tried Marijuana. Depending on what set of numbers you choose to believe, somewhere between 25-50 million Americans smoke at least once a year, with 22 million smoking at least once a month.
That makes us far more than a group of Internet Trolls, though the kind of organization it took to organize that feat is to be admired. Further, if we as Pot Smokers REALLY GET ORGANIZED AS A COHESIVE GROUP, we become a voting block to be FEARED, and thus listened to, and catered too.
Maybe that is what scares Fox News?

To add to my above post, I saw that the questions about marijuana were already up at the top on a wide margin too. Fox News is a bunch of liars and are ready to taint anything that goes against their stance. So much for unbiased news source, but of course their constant slant to everything has been proven over and over again.
I’m sure it doesn’t matter for much, but whenever the open for questions comes up the people at 420chan, including myself, go crazy and try to get as many people aware about the questions and to vote on it.
Spreading our message to 4chan(One of the most visited *chan sites) most of them agree with us and vote it up.
In addition to the chan’s, Digg and Reddit also help get awareness out there to vote it up.

I believe picking on fox news is hypocritical of NORML without blaming msnbc and cnn because I have watched both msnbc and cnn discredit marijuana legalization.
We need those commercials on cable television real soon to get it in peoples heads that this is serious and not just an internet phenomenon.
I would think fox news would love a bunch of people willing to pay taxes on their consumption of a product. That is what the Fair Tax is all about. Pay a huge sale tax on everything. I wonder if they would accept the $14 billion norml tried to give the govt the other day that would equal the taxes raised at current sales tax rates. With a possible 21% sales tax rate with a Fair Tax, that number would triple to $42 billion in tax revenue.

Is this the organizational paradigm for NORML? No problem if it is brother. You see I’ve only been a member for a few months. I started reading the posts and I listened to folks who wanted to take action. I believed this was an action oriented organization. Dude offering the Feds a goofy check is NORML’s idea of action? Bro this may be the last window of opportunity for cannabis legalization for a long time to come. These past months of belonging to your organization may not seem long but considering all that’s culminated during that time I believe it’s given me enough to evaluate our commonalities. Don’t think I am not thankful for allowing me to be a part of your organization. I’ve learned a lot and I respect your commitment to end prohibition of cannabis. For my buck the organization that will represent my views needs to take a more socially active approach to the cannabis legalization issue. I am not an internet troll! When I read this article I was outraged. I am not part of some kind of elaborate joke, but a person who saw an opportunity to be heard by the president. When I noticed that more than ten thousand people had out voted the next popular non-marijuana related question by nearly six thousand… I thought the end of prohibition was upon us. I was shocked that he laughed at us.
We need to stick together, stay the course and have faith in our fellow man to catch up. This is the time, keep up the pressure, I’m sending a few more dollars for the ad campaigne.
Where are our heros, everybody needs to keep speaking out, even our celebity friends. Most of us realise that breaking this issue will bring in far more sweeping change on many fronts, this is a watershed issue. We must remain peaceful but firm in our convictions.

Imagine standing next to a campfire just burned down to a nice bed of coals red hot and glowing. Now sit in the chair next to it and pull your shoes off, then your socks. Set back in the chair and let the coals warm your feet till they are good and toasty, now stand up and step both feet into that bed of coals. Feel it burn, now stand there till you feel like your going to pass out from the pain, feel it burning all the way to the bone. Your standing there in that fire and you can’t step out in the most pain you have ever experienced, what would you do to relive that pain? What would you do, almost anything I’d think, especially if it didn’t hurt anyone else. What would you do if you thought that pain would never go away, the doctors tried everything but the pain wouldn’t go away your feet still burned like you were still standing in that fire. Now you find one thing that helps one thing that stops the pain, a wonder cure, after taking the medicine the pain is gone and for a few minutes maybe thirty maybe an hour your feet don’t burn. You can truly relax sink back in the chair and for a while your ok, no pain. Would you take that medicine?? What if that medicine you took was marijuana, you smoked some pot, to relieve that terrible pain. If you can imagine these things you can start to see how I feel everyday from a neuropathy in my legs and feet caused by a bad back surgery. Is it right for my government to tell me I can’t use this substance and be threatened by fines or jail time if caught using or even possessing it, it’s what is legal but is it right. How can our government justify the persecution of people for using a medication that eases their pain. I’m not sure but I would think our elected officials would fight for our right to use it, seems they should consider the millions of people in pain that truly need their help and do the right thing. Please legalize it soon I don’t know how much more pain I can take.

This is very simple, when you have a product that a large portion of the populous are using or want to use, then you prohibit that product, you are going to have big problems.

And they aren’t sacrificing it: they are giving it to private businesses which rake in huge profits off the war on drugs. In exchange, these businesses dump tons of money into our government’s ‘campaign funds.’ So to attempt to use the economic advantages stopping the war on drugs would present to we the people, your are only pointing out the disadvantages it would present to the government.
Further, why must we try to bribe the rich into giving us back that which is rightfully ours? Can’t we just expect them to do it because the legal repercussions of smoking pot are worse than all other reasonably predictable repercussions – thus the punishment does not fit the ‘crime,’ and we should be allowed to demand that they behave like non-barbaric people? This isn’t a kingdom, but if our government is going to behave as though they have the authority to ‘cut off our hands if we steal an apple,’ and so far all of our attempts to suggest this is unfair have been either ignored or disregarded as ‘funny,’ then I don’t think they’ve left us with any other choice except to use force to get their attention, and show them how serious we are. I am quite open to alternatives, but it seems that even speaking directly to the president on national televion has failed: what else is there?

Everyone needs to remember that May 2nd is the Global Marijuana March taking place in hundreds of cities all across the globe. Many of these marches have routinely drew far more people than these tea parties a few years running. Now the media has shown it will not only listen these types of events but this cause in particular. We need to make sure the media is well aware of these events. We also need to be using resources Twitter, Facebook and Myspce much like these tea party organizers had to much success. We have to get as many people out as humanly possible. And we have the momentum, the resources and the people to generate lots of buzz and make these marches HUGE! It’s hard to laugh at numbers that big with cameras pointed at them. It’s even harder to ignore them.
Now would also be a great time to donate to the ad campaign and get our message out there. We’ll show them what an orchestrated campaign looks like. And all the different Americans that support it.
There are only two kinds of people who support “the war on drugs”:
1.- those who are ignorant.
2.- those who have their hands dirty.

Just more food for thought about this troll business and the WH town hall:
I ran into seeing NORML’s mention of the “town hall” meeting before I even saw it mentioned on CNN. I had been looking at it prior to that and was rather surprised about the number of cannabis submissions. Perhaps they were all from 4chan, but I seriously doubt it.
In my usual OCD manner, I noticed that NORML’s posting gave a nominal bump in overall response numbers to the, as mentioned, *already* popular topics on cannabis reform. No explosion, just a bump.
What was interesting was the push from CNN the next morning instantly pegged not only the cannabis questions, but user sign up overall for this event and the other related questions as well.
Long story short: NORML’s impact was actually minimal from my view of what happened. I’m fairly sure my accountings of the event was not impacted by internal desires and have even asked the people I mentioned this to before the snicker response. They have been kind enough to point out that I had bugged them about spending a minute to support various questions prior to the posting and my observations over a roughly 72 hour period of time.
I appreciated NORML’s efforts, but I don’t think it had a measurable impact on this event. I think some folks at the Whitehouse read a little too much into seeing traffic come from NORML.org/com and the relevant posting herein.
So what does this mean about us being called trolls everywhere? I’ve seen a lot of discussions as to the fear factor of being a supporter for this reform. People are truly convinced that one wrong statement can get your door kicked in. (In some cases they are correct.) The Internet does allow many of us to break out of the molds we need to survive day to day and actual speak up about these topics. I can see the troll concept, but like so many pointed out, that’s simple name calling.
Sure there are those who support reform who like to use really horrible composition, blatant slang, and more or less shout out how intoxicated they are, but I dont think these people number high enough in the presence online to merit all discussions troll based. I think everyone has seen some really good psy-0ps postings here and other places that are intended to create dissention and the like to know what I’m referring to.
Maybe we are trolls of a sort. But we are trolls that tend to vote, have jobs/money, hold some influence, and tend to scare the living crap out of those who mean to keep the status quo.
It was stated already, but FOX feeds a certain type of fear monger. That “network” specifically tailors their news to sell to that type of person. It’s just about money. They have a formula and it works. Name calling is the best they could come up with. There were no real numbers discussed etc. Just a simple fluff piece.
Keep in mind also that when you are banking on fear, NORML and others must be doing something right if we merit the mention there. (wink wink)
FauxNews must be smoking crack. Maybe it should try marijuana instead? Standing against the prohibition of marijuana is not a liberal thing, it’s not political at all, there are thousands and millions of people of all sorts that support us and our mission, including conservatives and every other sort of political lean. We should not lose sight of the primary and fundamental reason why cannabis should be legalized. It is because, in a free society as contemplated by our Constitution, the individual right of personal privacy protects against unwarranted governmental intrusion into purely personal matters, such as the decision whether or not to use alcohol or tobacco, eat red meat, practice birth control, and, yes, smoke cannabis. Simply put, this is none of the government’s rightful business.
Cannabis prohibition and its resultant persecution of cannabis users is wrong, oppressive and immoral. We the people must demand that our government end this policy which is a disgrace to a country which calls itself the land of the free.

For a Hundred years after the civil war African Americans and other petitioned the U.S. Gov for REAL EQUALITY under the Law. There were a million arguments and facts to support their cause. On the other side nothing but mythology and ignorance. There were martyrs, demonstrations, letter writers, marches , you name it.There were martyrs, demonstrations, letter writers, marches , you name it. Nothing changed or if it did, Change was minute, local, and easily reversed. Then in 1964 the Voting Rights Act did change everything. Segregation went from being something EVERY southern politican swore to to being something NO one with a realistic hope of being elected to any office could but disavow. The most ardent Segregationalist like Strom Thurmond and George Wallace had to reach out to African Americans to get elected, arguably thier hearts didn’t change but the rules of the me had.
Same with the Vietnam War. There was an anti-war movement. All the Facts and Logic were on their side, all the bullshit, mythology and ignorance was on the other. Their were martyrs, demonstrations etc… Nothing changed indeed it got worse. Then by 1972 polls showed that a majority of mainstream voters ( not just young, not just those in the anti-war movement) were now ready for the war to be history.
During Christmas 72 the war was at it’s peak, a month later it was over.
We don’t need to do that. We already have the right to vote and we already have the numbers. Our obstacle is much easier, or as it would seem infinatly harder. You see pot smokers don’t vote and when they do it’s for it’s for or against the Republicans or the Democrats. A lot of Republican pot smokers won’t vote for a Democrat whose better on MJ and a lot of Democrat pot smokers don’t withhold their vote from a Democrat who is horrible. Mirror image that, mix and match it, change the names and the affiliations around any way you want.
It’s not that the political class doesn’t care, it’s that we don’t.
It would be so easy to achieve reform at the ballot box, it’s so impossible to do it any other way. If we would only unite to elect members of Congress who support MJ reform and Unite to defeat those that don’t (Incumbent Killer Strategy) our goal would soon be achieved. I have two comments:
1) Yes, Fox is a news network slanted to the right. Just as CNN, MSNBC, etc are slanted far left. To say otherwise is ignorant. Anyone who watches only a single source for news will always be trained to think the way that the people they watch think. That’s why the best thing to do is get news from multiple sources and do fact checking on your own. (btw, Fox IS /one/ of my sources of news)
2) It is dangerous to our cause to ignore when places like Fox lie so agregiously like this, simply because you assume that if you don’t watch Fox that no one else does either. Check the ratings. Fox is THE MOST WATCHED news channel in the country, rivaled only by ESPN (which for those who don’t know, that’s just sports news) CNN is halfway down the list, and MSNBC barely make it on to the list at all. This just proves that we need to make further strides towards reaching out to the people of Fox News and the people that watch it, hammering away at the facts until it (slowly, over time) sinks in. Otherwise you’re ignoring a huge portion of the problem in favor of the easy path.

Thanks # 75 for again making my point, hope that doesn’t offend you. If you want to see MJ reform, alot of you out there are gonna have to hold your noses and vote against your party. That’s gonna be hard for you (as hard as it would be for me to vote for a Republican).
If it gives you any comfort, in my state the Democrats are just as bad as the Rep’s on MJ, so while I vote in every election, I leave an awful lot of blanks. See even though I’m closer to the Dems on almost every other issue, I’m willing to withhold my vote if they are conservative on marijuana, and in my Red state, they are.
Which is the other half of the point, this country is going to have to move much farther to the left before we wee any real improvement in MJ policy.
I’m sorry but it’s true. Whatever virtues or vices the Republican’s hold a person honest with himself would have to see that MJ reform is unlikely to come from the right. I’m not saying you have to vote for the Dems (hell Clinton never missed an oppurtunity to get to the right of the Rep’s on MJ). But if your Republican Congressman is the more evil of the two on MJ. Punish him by not voting (vote either third party or take no side at all). It’s what I do.
That being said the difference between the two (on MJ) will probably be microscopic in most congressional districts across the country. A few weeks ago a very couragous man from San Francisco filed a bill to Legalize MJ in California yet I don’t see on this site any Real encouragment or support for Tom Ammiano. No calls for him to run for statewide or national office. No offers to donate to his campaign.

Fox News is actually News Corp. It’s owned by Rupert Murdoch. The man, originally from Australia, is all into entertainment news and gossip. He has quite an interesting story and I’m presently finishing an authorized book written about him.
There’s many pro’s and con’s however, with two chapters left to read I’m convinced that the con’s outweigh the pro’s. Not too much bothers this man except the bottom line, owning the newspapers, stations and whatever else interests him in the moment. He’s presently 77 and will be dead soon so we’ll all see changes at “Fox”.

Dont you people realize preaching legalize marijuana is completely benigne to the anti marijuana legislation. For years people have been general in their demands for the government I dare you to try to change America when the secret societies have shifted the flow of currency to benefit them through the lobbyist state the country is being pressured into. As their grip on the law and political system tightens we sign away for the beneficial properties of our beings (through well thought out half lies the government tells) our rights for example. A message I sent to our new president
Dear Mr. Obama,
First I’d like to congratulate you on your victory over McCain. While I personally believe you needed more time in the Senate, I am resigned to endure your tenure as long as you remain in office. I say endure, because despite all of your assertions and promises to bring change to washington, I have yet to see you do possibly the most important thing you can do as president: END THE DRUG WAR! No other fiscal policy you could champion would do more to improve the lives and livelihoods of Americans more than ending the federal prohibitions on Marijuana and Industrial Hemp.
I have personally watched our wrong-headed approach to this issue ruin (possibly irrevocably) more than one person’s life. A young man (16 I think) was brought into court on a possession ticket. Due to his ignorance of the 4th amendment of our constitution, and it’s protections against unwarranted searches and seizures, he was coerced into letting a police officer search his bag (according to his testimony he was not high, and was simply walking down the street). The last I heard, walking down the street was not sufficient grounds to suspect a person of wrong doing. The judge had asked several times what the kid did wrong, and all he could come up with was that he was carrying marijuana (something the police officer COULD NOT HAVE KNOWN WITHOUT CONDUCTING HIS ILLEGAL SEARCH). The result of his ignorance is now he will have trouble A) getting into at least 2 branches of our military, B) Have this blemish on his record which may deny him access to financial aid as a college student, and C) Limit his ability to get certain jobs. All of this for the simple act of carrying. Not public intoxication, not a DUI, but simply possession.
I am sure you are aware, (being a former smoker yourself) that people change over time. While he may still imbibe in his youth, he may go completely sober as an adult, but this mark on his permanent record will haunt him to his grave. Is that fair? Is that JUSTICE? How many others must go through this same drama (and much worse) before we “change” this wrong-headed” public policy? In my mind it is events like this that foment the public disregard and disrespect of other laws (no matter if the laws are actually just in their own context).
Given the recent video tapping of Mr. Biden’s daughter recently SNORTING SEVERAL LINES OF COCAINE, I believe that she should do a little time. If she were me or any of my friends, I would no doubt have to visit them behind bars. With such uneven application of this nation’s drug laws, how can the rest of us unprivileged peasants, be expected to take these laws seriously?
I must admit that I found your cavalier response to the first (and most important) question asked of you at your last town hall meeting, to be dismissive and offensive. I can assure you that the number of people asking that question cannot be mistaken for some cabal of internet shut-ins! It was the most asked question because THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS WANT OUR DRUG LAWS “CHANGED”!!! You are not in the Senate anymore dude, don’t mistake your constituency for a lobbyist group, think-tank, or Political Action Committee. I can understand taxing marijuana should it become legalized but it needs to be controlled so it is not over taxed.I read about Oakland and their plan to tax medicinal marijuana ans it is insane.50-100 or more dollars on the ounce?Isn’t that a bit greedy?If they tax it that high then they have lost everything they have been fighting for and will be right back at square one

I’m very disappointed that you’ve chosen to attack Fox News. I am a regular, avid, conservative, FOX viewer that, like MANY other conservatives, not only support, but demand that Marijuana be legalised. I feel that it is criminal to withold Marijuana from legitimate medical uses, of which there are many. I also feel it is unconcienable that Marijuana continues to be demonized. As the law now stands, the major beneficiaries are the police, judicial system, prison system, true criminals and politicians. The last two may be one and the same in many instances.
As for FOX, I have not heard an overall bias related to this issue. Just last night Geraldo, I am not a fan of his, discussed the issue voicing his support for decriminaliztion.
As for regulation and taxation, the former might provide consistency and a quality measure, but may also inhibit potency, like alchohol proof is regulated. Taxation may be the only way to make legalisation palatible to the politicians for the several greedy government agencies potential loss in funding that they now derive.
This issue has languished to long and caused too much heartache and discomfort.
The legalization of cannabis we all know is unavoidable even if we wait everyone will eventualy see that cannibis isn’t what they thought it was. I believe strongly the use of cannibis is the only SAFE and all natural atternitive to using perscription drugs. I have seen the positive effects it has on the human body. All of them good.
TO THE FOX NEWS CHANNEL-LET THEM SAY WHAT THEY WANT, I’M STILL A TROLLIN. Glenn Beck on Fox (M-F 5pm) has voiced some support for re-legalizing cannabis on air more than once. He frequently has on Ron Paul and other libertarians discussing this issue and other pro-liberty topics.
Because of this, for first the first time in my adult life I am listening to a third-party candidate. I hope Ron Paul is the Republican candidate in 2012 (no third-party candidate can ever win).
In other news, I think that we only have 3 years to end prohibition of cannabis. There is never a guarantee who will become our next president. If a Republican wins, and if it’s not Ron Paul, then we will likely have to wait another 4 years. All we have to do is get one or two States to re-legalize it to start the ball rolling. Once it starts, I believe it can not be stopped.
Even though ending prohibition is very important to the security and safety of America, and to the liberty of Americans, it is not the only issue at hand. In 2012 I can not see myself voting for the Democrat candidate.
We are in a battle to win the hearts and minds of American citizens. For ‘them’ to win all they have to do is nothing. For ‘us’ to win we have to first get them talking about prohibition and then convince them that ending it is in the best interest for all Americans.
Fox news is unwatchable, even for someone like myself that favors policies of fiscal responsibility that used to be associated with the “right wing.” There is a small segment of voters that Fox News panders to. Sadly, they don’t realize that cannabis “enthusiasts” outnumber the moral majority and they would be well-served to listen if they are ever to be considered a serious political party again. Add our current and two former Presidents to the list of “internet trolls” along with Fox New’s darling Sarah Palin. Do as they say, not as they do. Thinking adults don’t care to be talked down to like a parent chastising a disobedient child. We have the facts, and its “high time” that politicians acknowledge the politically active base that is the cannabis movement.

Wow. Alot of Fox News bashing going on, but i have heard just as many pro-pot people on Fox as i have any of the other shitty news stations. Plus the ladies of Fox News are very easy on the eyes. But we did not see a post that say Haraldo Rivera (A Fox News corospondent) is for the out right legalization. What about the second most popular show on Fox, Glenn Beck. He also believes that legalizing marijuana would do this counrty much good. But Im sure that I am preaching to a crowd that does not like the right side of things. But we are out there. Right wing potheads. I belive they call us liberterians. The government has no business in business, private companiens, or my private life. Somewhere we forgot that it is us versus them. We are not supposed to trust the government. But yet we trust them to get deeper and deeeper into our private lives. People are the greater good not the government. This is a lesson I hope we learn quickly.

I take 6 lortabs 2 Lyrica and 4 Diazepam a day for a cronic pain that can’t be fixed. I know this is going to kill my liver. all my friends say that if I could try Marijuana it would help with the pain and I could get off the pain meds. that will cause more problems than Marijuana. but if I try it They will stop my meds. fox news need to report the facts about the research for cronic pain.
