Marijuana chemical may slow multiple sclerosis
via insciences.org
Armed with a $1.5 million National Institutes of Health grant, Temple researchers are studying more effective ways to treat multiple sclerosis. And their research utilizes synthetic cannabinoids based on chemicals derived from the marijuana plant.
… Using a compound (O-1996) synthesized by scientists at the Medical College of Virginia and the company Organix, Tuma and Ganea performed animal studies and found that the synthesized chemical affected cannabinoid receptors present primarily on immune cells.
… “This is a totally new approach to treating this disease, “says Adler, director emeritus and senior advisor for CSAR and Laura H. Carnell professor of pharmacology research. “These cannabinoids hold enormous potential, and that’s encouraging since we’re limited in options when it comes to preventing or reversing MS.”
Okay, follow along with me if you can.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health appropriates over one million dollars to fund medical research — not to investigate the therapeutic effects of natural cannabinoids (bad!), but rather to investigate the therapeutic effects of synthetic chemicals (good!) that are designed to mimic the effects of natural cannabinoids.
Equally ironically, the research is taking place at Temple University in Pennsylvania — where any use of natural cannabis (bad!) as a medicine is criminally illegal, but where research into the use faux cannabis (good!) is embraced.
Makes sense, right? Well about as much sense as the federal government claiming that pot (bad!) has no medical utility while simultaneously patenting certain natural occurring chemicals in the plant — those that the Feds hope to one day profit from (good!) — as, you guessed it, a medicine.
Any questions?

It’s funny how striking the parallels are between our government and the government described in 1984. Rational irrationality is all around us and few people even seem to notice.}
I read this in high school 1983. It scared the hell outta me. Now it seems to me to be a reality. I’m very scared, but im facing it. Those who dont seem to notice dont want to see it,they are scared and dont have the courage to face it or fight it.
I will stand and fight…How bout the rest of you?
I KNEW IT!!! I KNEW THOSE FUCKING ASSHOLES WOULD FIND A WAY TO STIFF US YET AGAIN!
You know what is next, they are gonna make patients take the pill synthetic crap and close the dispensaries.
So much for Obama bringing the Gov. to our side!
NOW I AM CONVINCED THEY WILL NEVER EVER NOT IN A MILLION YEARS LEGALIZE POT! IT WONT HAPPEN… THE WOULD RATHER MILLIONS OF PEOPLE SUFFER AND DIE THEN DO THE RIGHT THING BECAUSE IT WILL MAKE A BUNCH OF ALREADY RICH PEOPLE LOSE A LIL MONEY. THEY KNOW THAT POT LEGALIZATION WILL HELP THE ECONOMY TOO AND THEY DONT DO IT. WHY?! BECAUSE THEY DONT CARE!
AMERICA IS DEAD PEOPLE. FORGET IT JUST FLIP “THE MAN” OFF AND SMOKE YOUR POT BECAUSE IT WILL ALWAYS BE ILLEGAL. THE FACT THAT THEY WOULD ACTUALLY TAKE THESE ELABORATE MEASURES SHOULD SHOW YOU THAT.
Its funny, I’ve been watching many many blogs on the internet. Many months ago people didn’t seem to notice that our freedom is being stolen. Now its a whole different story….people are waking up. We MUST defend this great land against all enemies…Foriegn and DOMESTIC!
Our governments fall will come at thier own hands…GREED! Once the economy completely fails..it will be up to US to run this counrty. We dont need them, we need our military, our good police and each other. We dont need what they are doing to US.
It’s Friday night and being 60 I am sitting in my recliner about to get a hot bath and go to bed. After Bill Maher of course he is my hero…
But I had a thought, a revolutionary thought..
WHY DO OUR LEADERS NOT TAKE THE 100 BILLION WASTED ON THE WAR ON DRUGS.
MAKE HELP WITHOUT STIGMA AVAILABLE TO THOSE WHO NEED HELP OR WANT HELP.
THOSE THAT DO NOT REQUIRE HELP WILL BE LEFT ALONE TREAT THEM LIKE THE ADULTS THEY ARE.
WHY DO OUR LEADERS DESTROY THOSE THAT FEEL THEY HAVE A RIGHT TO FREE CHOICE.
COULD IT BE THE MILLIONS CORPORATIONS PAY THEM. THE CORPORATIONS THAT STAND TO LOSE THE MOST MONEY IF CANNABIS WERE LEGAL?
IT IS TIME FOR ALL OF US TO HAVE REVOLUTIONARY IDEAS OF OUR OWN. WHAT A GREAT COUNTRY WE COULD HAVE WITHOUT THE GREED WE LIVE WITH TODAY.
THEY HAVE ALMOST WIPED OUT THE MIDDLE CLASS WITH THEIR WARS AND LAWS TO SERVE CORPORATE PROFITS. YET YOU NEVER HEAR OF A SWAT TEAM BREAKING DOWN A SENATORS DOOR.. WONDER WHAT YOU WOULD FIND? FOR SURE YOU WOULD FIND A BANK BOOK SHOWING MULTI-MILLIONS OF PAC MONEY STASHED AWAY.
WHILE THE PEOPLE IN THE HOOD ARMED WITH THEIR SUBSTANDARD EDUCATION. TRY TO LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM. WE SACRIFICE ALMOST A MILLION OF THEM A YEAR.
NOW THAT THEY HAVE FOUND A NEW ROUTE TO TAKE OUR MONEY AND FUTURE. TO REDUCE THE NUMBERS IN JAIL THEY ARE SWITCHING TO PROBATION AND REHAB ALONG WITH FINES FOR YOUR VICTIMLESS CRIME. THIS IS TURING INTO A REAL MONEY MACHINE FOR MANY CITIES. PLUS THEY CAN SAY WE ARE NOT SENDING AS MANY TO JAIL. WE JUST MILK THEM AND DESTROY THEIR RECORD, WORKS FOR THEM.
THE CORPORATIONS WISH US TO ONLY HAVE THE CHOICE THEY PRODUCE. I READ AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR FOUL CHEMICAL DRUGS THEY PUSH. KILLING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS EVERY YEAR LOOK AT THE STATISTICS ITS ALL THERE. MANY OF THEIR FOUL CHEMICALS COULD BE REPLACED BY A NATURAL HERB SAY DOCTORS IN CALIFORNIA
THEY PAY OUR LAWMAKERS MILLIONS EVER YEAR. THEN WHEN THEY MAKE A DECISION. IT IS NOT ALWAYS WHAT IS BEST FOR ALL AMERICANS. THEY VOTE FOR WHAT IS BEST FOR THE CORPORATIONS THAT PAY THEIR BILLS.
BACK TO MY IDEA, IT IS TIME TO TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK. MAKE DECISIONS THAT BENEFIT ALL AMERICANS. DO AWAY WITH POVERTY AND MEDICAL DISPARITY. WE COULD HAVE A GREAT COUNTRY WHERE WE COULD ALL LIVE AND PROSPER. IF WE WOULD JUST STOP THE ONES FEEDING ON US.
END THE WAR ON DRUGS TAKE THE MONEY AND HELP THE FEW THAT WANT OR NEED HELP LEAVE THE REST OF US THE HELL ALONE!!!!

The government doesn’t want cannabis users to ever be happy because it is run by w.a.s.p.s and those who are sympathetic to Nazi fascist regimes. Who knows when we will be truly free, if ever. President Obama, do something!
A girl whom I really liked just shrugged me off because she asked me if I smoke pot and I said yes. She can’t handle it because it is “illegal” so not only does the government want me to suffer in life they also want me to suffer in love. This is the first time I truly resent the government. Just one question…how much longer until the sanity ends?
Just one question…how much longer until the insanity ends?
Im starting to think that no matter what we do the law will never change… There’s just to much money on the other side and years of dogma.
What does it matter, the Fed government has overstepped their enumerated powers… their attempts to wrongfully govern our lives have become outrageous at best. It is time we TAKE back our rights.
The real task is cleaning out the corrupt leaders of our states, so that we can clean the channels between the states and Washington. It is not enough that we ignore their totalitarian style laws, we have to make it legal once and for all.
We are on the right track, but we must do more! Keep at it!
I always like to picture the Federal government as a bunch of honest, hardworking, and brilliant individuals elected by the people to serve their best intrests…. But in reality it seems to be more like a Monkey #$%&ing a coconut…

You know ladies and gents, I was reading the darwin awards and they say that us stoners are nothing more than demoralized, demotivated, ignorant losers. Some say well do anything to get high, but i then again who hasnt scraped a resin ball or two in their day?
This feller i want to tell you about just defines stupidity when it came to his habit.
this junkie walks into a store and buys birdseed–100% poppy, see where im goin with this?
Takes it home, boils it into a paste, and i dont wanna say it but i have to. He gets his arm nice and comfy, and shoots this paste into his veins not once but twice
and dies due to poppy seed pellets gathering in his lungs.
How many of us have snorted cannabis seeds or something to that extent? i dont think ive ever wanted to get high THAT bad.
So why cant we be free?
But in response to Gen. Jake, Thomas Jefferson wasnt the only one of our forefathers who smoked, so did Washington, Franklin, and Adams. In fact those three men had the happiest slaves on earth. guess why?
THEY ALL GREW CANNABIS.
Thats right we descended from stoners. Its in our blood, its in our heritage and it is what made this country. But we cant seem to prove that to our government. Dont you think its funny that since they ILLEGALIZED cannabis that our country has gone to shit?
Anyway just thought id share that with yall.

I know this is a dumb question.. but since quite a few States (backed by quite a few very well respected medical professionals) have already legalized medical marijuana – how can the status of cannabis still be upheld by the Supreme Court as a class I drug with no medicinal value (not to mention the little merinol issue…) where because of this hypocritical and obviously unjustified classification is sending millions to jail..
I dunno – is it just me or should there be a class action suit EVERY YEAR until this changes??

Marijuana users are determined to stand up to the injustice of marijuana probation and accomplish legalization, no matter how long or what it takes to succeed. Despite the threat of arrests and a variety of other punishments and sanctions marijuana users have persisted in their support for legalization for over a generation. They refuse to give up their long quest for justice because they believe in the fundamental values of American society. Prohibition has failed to silence marijuana users despite its best attempts over the last generation. The issue of marijuana’s legalization is a persistent issue that, like marijuana, will simply not go away. Marijuana will be legalized because marijuana users will continue to fight for it until they succeed.

Class action sounds great, how would that work? Maybe it is because no one has freedom of speech if they smoke cannabis. You will be ostracized and become a social outcast when you are caught. Even your fellow smokers must watch you go down in flames lest they too become collateral damage in the war on citizens. It is sad but true. If you speak out against the oppression you must be dealt with because you too must be a “pot Head”. Even if you don’t smoke and know all the myth and rhetoric is exactly that myth! Most people can not say a thing because it hasn’t been exactly politically correct. This MPP article has created a great forum for venting and I appreciate everyone’s comments. I agree 110% with the idea of a single vote and taking marijuana off the schedule I narcotic list. I agree it is a first step towards states rights, legalization, halting federal funding to states for beating down the citizens and common sense. In Virginia we are organizing an annual march on the capitol while other activists meet with legislators inside. Keep fighting, organize, and oh-ya we need enough people to surround our state capitol next year. Follow the link below if you’re interested:

A class action by affected parties – i.e. – those already in jail or facing charges, also growers in medical marijuana States. These groups alleviate the fear of a ‘stigma’ since they are already stigmatized.
And yes, I do understand all the ‘interested parties’ and their power. However, ultimately, if the Supreme Court ever takes a case such as this one, they would have to somehow explain in a very detailed document as to how Merinol and other synthetics are of value while natural marijuana is not. They will also have to do the explaining based on all the medical evidence and scientific research which proves that it simply cannot remain a class I narcotic for the plain reason that it is medically useful. – PROVEN EMPIRICALLY.
I know the Supreme Court does not write laws per say, but they can issue a ruling on the constitutionality of a specific law, and since this affects the freedom of millions – (no not ‘potheads’ I know they will shrug them off – even though it affects them too since at any given point they are in danger of being thrown in jail, but people sitting in prisons’) this is definitely a life & liberty issue…
Norml, MPP & the ACLU have excellent dedicated attorneys, I was just questioning why this hasn’t been done.. or maybe I just didn’t hear of it…
just my 2 cents.
Dear , Chrokee Fred ,
Me and you know you hit the reason why cannabis is illegal square on the head . These companies also came up with the idea of drug testing kits . There’s an ad out now on the radio where a mother asks her son ( the first thing she
says )…..have you ever tried marijuana then goes on to ask ” heroin , speedbals , etc. so , what these companies are doing is trying to tie marijuana in with hard drugs . This is another example how these companies use deceptive advertising ( that i have been telling you the public about for years ) to make the public believe marijuana is a bad drug .
I hpoe you all realize this fight will get tougher once the government passes national health care(Without our concent of course). They will use the arguement it will cost tax payers more to treat (addicts).
So how do we stop the government passing laws that WE THE PEOPLE dont get a vote in?
Temple University is in Philadelphia, a large section of north Broad Street runs through Temple’s campus.
With all due respect, Chrokee Fred Jesus, it’s not the liquor and tobacco industries keeping cannabis illegal; after all, they could make even more money from it if it were legal and they offered their own.
The reason cannabis is illegal (among other reasons) is so uncle sam could replace slave labor (outlawed after the north won the civil war) with prison labor. Which is why the US has more prisoners per capita than any other nation on the planet.
By outlawing naturally occurring drugs Uncle Sam gave itself a new market it could dominate, since they and only they make the rules.
read tinyurl.com/1mn
That is just weird… Why would synthetic materials be better and just morally than something natural? I guess it’s all about the money… That is just sad how doctors and the government just want our money these days…
The goverment could make money legalizing weed. The same way they legalized alcohol. I hear people saying that the government couldnt control it since its a plant, and anyone could harvest it. However, people use to make alcohol back in the day as well, but when it became legal, it was far more convenient to just buy it at the store. The same would apply with marijuana. I wouldnt sit around growing it if I had the option of heading to my local CVS or Walgreens. I think most who want it to enjoy would follow suit. I know the government would tax the hell out of it, but that is one tax that I wouldnt mind paying.
drifter..
Why do the tobacco liquor and beer folks back the major propaganda site supporting the war on drugs????
Partnership for a drug free America inc…..
CFJ
I don’t think they see cannabis as a future source of income..
I would do both, grow and in between harvests buy strains I didn’t have!
Actually the government is NOT making money from alcohol, it is costing them a fortune.
How can marijuana be a schedule 1 drug when the government patents chemicals that naturally occur in pot for medical use? I thought a schedule 1 drug was one with a high potential for abuse (Tobacco/Alcohol?), and no medicinal value (Tobacco/Alcohol?)
Lets take something nonlethal and practically harmless, and alter it, so that pharmaceutical companies can charge a fortune, we pay a fortune, and the government.. makes a fortune!
How about we start making SYNTHETIC WATER, in powder form, just add water! CAN I PATENT POTATOS ?!

Dear Mr. Snyder:
Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the legalization of marijuana. I appreciate hearing from all Pennsylvanians about the issues that matter most to them.
Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule I drug under federal law. As such, it is not legally recognized as having any acceptable medical use, and it is a crime to possess or distribute marijuana for any purpose.
At this time, there are no bills pending before either the House of Representatives or the Senate to decriminalize or legalize marijuana for medicinal or recreational use. Please be assured that should such a bill be introduced and come before the Senate, I will keep your views in mind.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about this or any other matter of importance to you.
If you have access to the Internet, I encourage you to visit my web site, http://casey.senate.gov. I invite you to use this online office as a comprehensive resource to stay up-to-date on my work in Washington, request assistance from my office or share with me your thoughts on the issues that matter most to you and to Pennsylvania.

RE:
TN Activist,
I place very little trust in their personal opinions.
– To me, a doctor is just another human-being with a
possibly-debatable / questionable education and medical-viewpoint(s)…
– First to ask,
What is their viewpoint?
– Does it lean more towards conventional ‘allopathic’,
merely treating symptoms, usually with synthetic-compounds
far-removed from anything occurring in nature?
…Or more towards naturopathic,
treating the entire body as a system prone to imbalances
and deficiencies, remedied with best combination of foods and plant-derived medicines?
Pharmacologically,
– Do they place more of their trust upon phytochemistry?
(i.e. medicines closely-derived from plants and / or combinations thereof),
Or
Something else?
(Distant ‘knock-offs’ of
plant-based medicines / medications;
i.e. Artificial compounds bearing
little resemblance to the phyto-chemicals
they’re originally based upon).

The only reason they use synthetic THC is because Fed law says it’s a class 1 drug. Which means no one is allowed to have it in possession not even the drug makers.
But because of using the synthetics can give room to legalizing marijuana because now there is proof that it has a “medical value” to it.
There are other facilities in the US that are doing tests on marijuana when it comes to todays potency, which if all the research was combined it would show by far that “Pot” is medically viable and should no longer be illegal. By the way can anyone show the medical values of smoking cigarettes or drinking liquor? But “pot” on there other hand can help with … well you get the point.

You said:
When the Police tell you that pot causes crime ————– that is propaganda!!!
I have to disagree.
Please do not think me an idiot,or brainwashed, I agree in legalization, I agree with pretty much all of your propaganda statements in that comment you left above. And maybe after reading this you might agree with my argument on why that single statement is false.
Pot does cause crime, not because of any chemical dependency or craving, not because of any reaction to it.
Because its illegal there is a vast underground market, people are killed over it, in the states its grown illegally in farms hidden in nation parks and national forests. Its sold illegally, and people get very defensive about it, about protecting themselves over turf wars and being ripped off.
I can agree with you that if it were legal it would not cause crime. It being illegal does however cause crime.
See where I am going with this?
by the simple statement that it does not cause it, you leave out the entire bit of crime that is caused by its current legal status.
I think you can get away with that here on NORML’s site because for the most part people that visit and read the stories and comments here are already well enough educated that they see where your going with it.
However on other sites, and articles, places where you are trying to educate the people who read it and maybe do not have a stead fast reaction and decision to it, you do your cause a disservice with that simple statement instead of any detail immediately following, or maybe rewriting, that single simple statement.
Just a thought on picking words carefully and giving full facts on statements you make.
At this time in our country we are closer than ever before to removing the astigmatism associated with pot, we are closer than any time before at making it legal, again! We can not afford to lose any single alli in the fight. I think that your statement does exactly that, it alienates people because they know there is crime associated with pot.
If its explained in a bit more detail than screaming propaganda, then those people can see why you say its false.
I only know this from conversations and arguments with people over me saying the very same thing you said.
They instantly jumped to the conclusion that I was a lair because of that single thing, if I lied about that i must be fibbing on all the other stuff i had pointed out as well.
Aside from that single point, I applaud you.
