Yes, we know that the Drug Czar is required by law to lie, but given the abysmally low standards set by Gil Kerlikowske’s predecessor we certainly expected better than this.

The federal government is not going to pull back on its efforts to curtail marijuana farming operations, Gil Kerlikowske, director of the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, said Wednesday in Fresno.
… “Legalization is not in the president’s vocabulary, and it’s not in mine,” he said. … “Marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit.”
Most folks visiting this blog ought to recognize Kerlikowske’s first bit of hyperbole; after all, this isn’t the first time the Czar has admitted to possessing a severely limited vocabulary. It’s Kerlikowske’s second allegation — an outright lie — that truly has people flabbergasted. And with good reason.
Hundreds of scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals now document the therapeutic utility of cannabis. That’s why thirteen states, encompassing more than 25 percent of the US population, have legalized the physician-supervised use of pot. To add insult to injury, the Drug Czar was visiting a medical marijuana state (California) when he made his asinine remark.
Then again, the Kerlikowske is stunted by his limited vocabulary. So perhaps he is unable to read the findings of the hundreds of studies presently available in the scientific literature. But is that any excuse to deny what is taking place in front of his eyes?
For instance, a new study published in the Journal of Opioid Management just days prior to Kerlikowske’s foot-in-mouth speech affirms:
“Clearly, there is a growing acceptability of the therapeutic practice of medicinal cannabis use amongst organized medicine groups. … Estimates indicate that in 2008, approximately 7,000 American physicians have made such authorizations for a total of approximately 400,000 patients.”
So which is it Gil? Are more than 7,000 US physicians really all just snake-oil salesmen? Are 400,000 US patients actually just suffering from one massive placebo effect? Or are you sir, just like your predecessor, simply full of sh*t?

It makes me sad that he is from Seattle. I thought there was some hope since the police are a little more lax about weed here than in a lot of other places, but it sounds like we are in for the same old bs for a while longer.

I’m glad you point out that he is required by law to lie. The drug czar simply cannot legally admit that cannabis has a medical value until it is rescheduled to at least a schedule II substance. It’s schedule I status specifically means that it has no “legally recognized” medical uses. Of course, the failure to legally recognize the truth of cannabis is the whole problem.
At the risk of repeating myself, Kathleen Sebelius, director of HHS has the power right now to unilaterally reschedule cannabis, or completely remove it from the schedule.

I felt a little sick when i heard this. All i could do was imagine another 8 years of crap like this. All i could do was think of all the people that will be effected negativly by these lies we all know so well.
Up until now i had a deep hope that the new administration had finally began to understand the word Change, but all they really ment was that the people needed to change more for them. Like we need more of that. They want to gain more control, and they refuse to release any control they have even if it is proven inhumaine and wrong by the very people who gave them their power.
I feel sick again. What can we do to keep the hope alive? What can we do to endure? I fear more now for Marc Emery than i did yesterday. I really hope that Canada does not give him over to the US, because i fear once they have him that he will be made an example of. Their intentions have just been spoken, and that is to leave things as they are once again.

As long as marijuana is illegal all the DEA and most law enforcement officers have job security. 800,000 arrests a year keeps them busy. It’s money/job thing. It really seems extemely bizaare to me that the government and anti-drug agencies can accept drugs like cocaine as schedule II due to their extremely limited medical applications, and yet they can possibly sit there and say, with a straight face, that marijuana truly deserves to be schedule I and has limited or no medical application.

I have been the guy thats sits back, watches and reads. I have smoked for years off on on. Sometimes every single day for months on end. Then depending on jobs quit without any effect to me. I now just quit again because of job seeking. It is no way addicting that I can see. I had no withdrawls at all, and it was easy. I may of been a little grumpier in the morning but I am always in the morning. Its completely harmless. Only those who smoke it, know this it seems. The other thing I noticed is the more you smoke it the less it seems to effect me. The high factor kinda loses its full effect. Your boddy seems to almost build an immunity to it. But if you take small breaks and keep it for weekend uses or special occasions it seems like its more effective. How do you others feel about what I just said? Can you relate to that? Its total BS how our government thinks they know whats good for us. When they are doing the opposite by waisting our tax dollars. They could be utilizing the tax money and the huge industry Cannabis could create. It honestly is the save the economy cure if you ask me. Gil has learned that in Washington, D.C. everyone kowtows to the feds and their laws, and if you don’t the people established in bureaucracies and non-government organizations with vested interests–career wise and salary wise–will get something on you or find some way of making you get in line. He is spouting the federal position, based on federal law, and federal bureaucracies. If he ever really had any intentions of trying to change the federal system from the inside he obviously has been compromised, and is sticking to the federal talking points. That is to say he is parroting the federal mantra that cannabis has not been decriminalized or legalized by Congress, and because it is in Schedule I has no medical value. This is no surprise. Gil, by not being in touch with the reality the American people know, is ignoring the research and the federal cannabis program based at the U. of Mississippi that distributes federal weed to the few patients left in the grandfathered program. ElSohy or whatever the guy’s name is who is in charge of it has a company with pharma interests in patenting as many of the chemicals that can be made from or synthesized on basis of research from cannabis as possible, it looks like. No medicinal benefit? Not only does it alleviate symptoms from numerous aches, pains and maladies, for some of us it’s like a performance enhancing drug (of course, not when the couch-lock is on…but later when you’re trying to solve a problem creatively…you know what I mean).
In the strict legal sense, legalization will probably never be governmentally supported. Across the globe, governments do not legalize substances that divert the population away from productive work. It’s a socio-economic, productivity, GDP sort of thing.
I mean, who really wants to, or even can, work when baked? Have a few drinks at lunch and you can still basically function with some modicum of motivation. Burn down and you look for the nearest overstuffed chair and TV.
Anyway, so they don’t support legalization. How about significant decriminalization, a happy medium between legal and illegal. Basically, just leave us alone so that we may make our own choices, as responsible adults.
Until then, let’s just keep on growing it in the shed behind the house, sharing it with other like-minded people and excluding the non-believers from our exclusive club of forward-thinking, creative types that truly progress the culture and society.

It was never banned for health reasons in the first place, they had an immigration problem in the Southwest due to Mexicans bringing pot across the border…so a few officials decided the way to control the immigration was to ban pot, then came the entire ‘Reefer Madness’ propaganda campaign. This was documented in detail on The History Channel. Millions die each year from alcohol and cigarettes, even 10,000 people die each year from over the counter Asprin, yet no one has EVER died from pot. It is a 100% organic plant that grows naturally. When are these people going to put their Political agendas aside and listen to the people??! It might be that time for all of us to start throwing handfulls of seeds along road side tree lines and let nature do its thing.
I am not sure that voting (president) has much importance anymore. Who are we going to vote for? Who are they going to let us vote for? Who do the people we vote into office really answer to? First of untill the Drug Czar is diagnosed with a disease like cancer or AIDS i dont think he should say it has no medicinal value when tons of patients say it does and so do doctors. I agree with ZZ, alchohol has caused so many deaths, yet marijuana still has such a bad image. Marijuana has caused no related deaths, yet every time I turn on the news, another college student is dead due to overdrinking and alchohol poisoning. The drug Czar should really reconsider, since marijuana does exhibit some positive effects. We have finally made steps legalizing medical marijuana in close to 12-13 states. We do not want to lose this progress by listening to this guy. Futher more if marijuana is so bad and dangerous why am i going into college with 30 credits and starting as a sophmore?

Here’s my take if you’ve scrolled down this far. Obama is trying to get an enormous health care plan passed. He is going to need to make some consessions to the big pharmaceutical giants to even begin to get it through. These companies have probably made it clear that they do not want the federal gov’t to say anything but zero tolerance to pot or President O can take his plan and shove it. Just a thought.
It seems to me, that no one follows the money or the power far enough. Keep going with that until you get there…and then…it would be a good idea to keep to youself. Governments, cartels, pharma-beasts, religious prohibs, all prohibs, mean nothing to them. You may have real fear going down that path, and you would have good reason to have fear.
Obama is trying to please everyone right now. and is not pleaseing anyone. Marijuana reform is an target to dismiss at this point. We got him elected an when 2012 the GOP will be back in power if Obama does not wake up now.

Why doesn’t he give the power to U.S. Health and Human Services, which by the way could change its schedule as we speak, then to the state Health and Human Services, then to the state Health Dept, then to the County Health Depts. where it is appropriately controlled right now. Of course…I’m talking about the only quasi legal medicinal cannabis. As it is a health issue…let us recognize that it’s in the right church, but the wrong pew.

I agree with you, for medicinal purposes being under the health department is common sense. Although I feel grateful for access I have, my license for cannabis is controlled by the department of public safety…the police, who don’t even believe cannabis is medicine to begin with.Duuuuuh….
