Latest Research On Pot and Schizophrenia Runs Contrary to Mainstream Media Hype

The mainstream media loves to spill ink hyping the allegation that marijuana causes mental illness, particularly schizophrenia. In fact, it was in March when international media outlets declared that cannabis use ‘doubled’ one’s risk of developing the disease. Yet when research appears in scientific journals rebuking just this sort of ‘reefer madness,’ it generally goes unreported.

Such is the case with a pair of just-published studies slated to appear in the journal Schizophrenia Research. The first study, conducted by a team of researchers at various New York state hospitals, the Yale University School of Medicine, and the National Institutes of Mental Health assessed whether there exists a causal association between cannabis use and the age of onset of psychosis in patients hospitalized for the first time for an episode of schizophrenia.

Despite previous media claims to the contrary, researchers concluded:
“Although the onset of cannabis use disorder preceded the onset of illness in most patients, our findings suggest that age at onset of psychosis was not associated with cannabis use disorders. Previous studies implicating cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia may need to more comprehensively assess the relationship between cannabis use disorders and schizophrenia, and take into account the additional variables that we found associated with cannabis use disorders.”

A separate study slated for publication in the same journal assessed the cognitive skills of schizophrenic patients with a history of cannabis use compared to non-users. Authors reported that patients with a history of marijuana use “demonstrated significantly better performance on measures of processing speed, verbal fluency, and verbal learning and memory” compared to abstainers. Marijuana use was also associated with better overall GAF (Global Assessment of Functioning) scores compared to those of non-users.

Authors concluded: “The results of the present analysis suggest that (cannabis use) in patients with SZ (schizophrenia) is associated with better performance on measures of processing speed and verbal skills. These data are consistent with prior reports indicating that SZ patients with a history of CUD (cannabis use disorders) have less severe cognitive deficits than SZ patients without comorbid CUD. … The present findings also suggest that CUD in patients with SZ may not differentially affect the severity of illness as measured by clinical symptomatology.”

Both study’s findings are in line with previous (though virtually unreported) research indicating that marijuana is unlikely to instigate incidences of schizophrenia in the general population, that cannabis use among patients with the disease is associated with higher cognitive function, and that at least some schizophrenics find subjective relief from symptoms of the illness by using pot. Nonetheless, odds are the nobody from the mainstream media will be champing at the bit to report on them.

Bottom line: marijuana’s complex relationship with schizophrenia is far from understood, and likely won’t be for some time. But that doesn’t give the MSM a free pass to only promote one side of the story.

  1. I was diagnosed with a lot of incorrect diagnoses since I was 15. A dr finally diagnosed my illness as schizoeffective/bipolar. I smoke weed only on occasions of severe stress and it relieves my symptoms to the point that I don’t hallucinate or stay paranoid. My use is not excessive but it does help when it’s needed. When I was 15 and having all the symptoms is severe amounts, weed was the only thing that kept the voices from scaring me to the point of suicide.

  2. I FREAKING KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been saying this for YEARS!!!! No one believed me, but I knew an official study would eventually be conducted that would prove my theory right!!! HA!

  3. Even though this is a new study, this is old news for those who know the difference between science and media B.S. (which is everyone reading this comment) Slowly but surely marijuana is more in the public eye not as a ‘demon weed’ but as just another way to relax after a day of work (or class in my case). I believe the more reports that come out revealing the FACTS about cannabis, the more people will come around to realizing that if there was an obvious link between schizophrenia and marijuana use, there would be a lot more people with said affliction walking around.

  4. Here are a few more studies in our favor! Now where is the mainstream media?

If they cannot improve ratings or make money off of it, they are no where to be found!

  5. Prohibitionists do not want to be confused with the facts; they’ve allready got their minds made up. Besides, they’ve got ready access to their drug of choice: rot gut ,booze, fire water, or whatever else you want to call that liver destroying, “wet brain” addictive, deadly toxin. Prohibitionists’ hypocrisy alone renders their position untenable.

  6. Cannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for well over 5,000 years. Don’t you think there would have been a tie to cannabis and SZ a while before now even with the advanced science of today? Every herb used for medicinal purposes have been experimented with for thousands of years and when enough people died or got some disease they knew what was up… same goes for marijuana… in my eyes anyway.

  7. The Mainstream Media needs to be smarter on how they forcast the news. In Houston, we here propaganda at all ends.

Just the other day, our local ABC news anchor, Jessica Willey said “there was a new study out” (done in 2007) about cannabis causing lung cancer. The study was done by the New Zealand Institute. It clearly states in the study online, cannabis does not cause empazema. During the newscast, she interviewed a Dr. and he said that it does cause emphaszea and lung cancer. I know she had to do the research and she knew the answer but failed to correct him. It’s the media who is controlling alot of the controversy

  8. You are wrong when you said: “But that doesn’t give the MSM a free pass to only promote one side of the story.” MSM does have a free pass. MSM does not care. They risk nothing by lying. They risk profits by telling the truth: their stock in munitions, construction & pharmaceuticals companies would devalue.

  9. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder 2 years ago and also only find relief from smoked marijuana. i had tried smoking pot in the past as a social thing in late teens and then quit for a few years. After learning my diagnoses i had gone through 3 doctors and countless medication cocktails that literally cause even more problems to surface. A friend of mine offered to smoke with me and relief from my hallucinations and anxiety was nearly instantaneous. i was able to think, able to process life for what it is, rather than be lost between reality and hallucination.

The audacity of the MSM to use SZ as yet another tool in the anti-marijuana law reform kit is beyond me.

  10. After reading this article I became curious about the definition of “cannabis use disorder”. I’ve tried to look it up but all I’ve been able to come across is studies done in the treatment of it (oddly enough).

Does anybody have a link showing the medical definition of “cannabis use disorder”?

I was able to find a small piece in a WebMD article talking about the reclassifications of “substance abuse,” but thats all.

  11. Yes folks, if you smoke cannabis the government has a legal stance of classification for pot smokers, in short it reads that it’s a disorder mentally but how many other issues are wrong with government, law, etc. The pot laws are put in place to keep you in a closet for as long as your a user. Government knows it’s wrong, their just keeping you down, control is what it’s all about and NOT being right, honest or correct. Now smoke your herb in the closet and be happy. Colorado’s citizens voted leaders into to office and now you can’t get busted in Colorado unless your really super stupid. The Tennessee Activist is baaaack!

  12. I’ve known a lot of Schitzos . Gentle , passive , couteous , polite but a few shots of whiskey ( or other liquor )and they turn into aggressive , combative , obnoxious , mean fighting bastards .

Of course Alcoholic beverages are legal so we’ll concentrate on Cannabis consumers .

  13. “cannabis use disorder”?????
    WTF??
Is that anything like Nancy Reagan’s claim that any use is abuse just because it is illegal?

  14. I think this is a Republican ploy (they’re sore loosers) especially when marijuana is slowly becomming re-legalized.
Let’s stop them in their tracks …NOW.

NOW is the time to re-double our efforts, before public opinion sways.

To all of us who use pot for our reasons, especilly the baby boomers who proved to us that smoking won’t turn us crazy.

My belief and hope is that those who used pot in the past for recreational/medicinal use-will continue to promte it.

Kinda remember we’re all getting older and when I turn 60 years old, I’d rather have a joint (for joint pain ?) than morphine. Obama’s administratin won’t prosecute for marijuana. Let’s get this mommentum going before it’s get’s too late….Thanks for letting me vent a little. RSK

  15. The big question is “why does increases in cannabis consumption, as seen in Western societies since the 1960’s, not correlate with changes in the frequency of schizophrenia?”

Now, some answers have been proposed. Some talk about a time lag, other about changes in diagnostics.

    These beg the following questions:

    1. If there is indeed a time lag why can it simultanaously be identified, yet not be quantified.

    2. If indeed diagnostics changes are the cause, how come anyone got the idea in the first place to blame cannabis for this.

And a third thing, I guess, is how come specifically cannabis is targeted as producing a kind of “life-time intoxication” while no one in their right mind would EVER claim that getting drunk leads to permanent psycho-moter deficiencies, delusions and raised aggression levels? To me it’s as clear as why we used to view blacks and whites as totally different.

Drugs (that are not alcohol) are good enemies. They don’t ever go away. They are used by a minority of people. Lend themselves to projection, fear and xenophobia.

  16. I’ve suffered from the big S all my life.I was on a whack of drugs(legal for some reason)which made things completely worse. It wasn’t until I used cannabis products that my symptoms pretty much went away.I do however get mentally sick when I don’t get my proper medicine.CANNABIS

  17. Ive smoked for years, n i can quit when needed to pass that stupid ass piss test, which in my opinion is invasion of privacy, but its funny how i try to quit smoking cigs n i cant, as far as being skit-so ,that’s just more bullshit cuz there’s nothing wrong with me, and I’m sure anyone else that smokes cannabis isn’t skit-so either.Again PURE BULLSHIT we are the experience cannabis users i think we all know if it does or if it doesn’t cause skit so.Media needs help pulling their head outta their ass.

  18. As a matter of fact my dad’s a truck driver an he’s in Denver right now, an i asked him is it total chaos there since its legal ? Are there people driving on it getting in accidents , are there people walking around smoking it? He said no, an i told him yea i kinda figured that. There again nothing will change only the quality n the tax. These people that think omg its legal people r gonna be driving on it, smoking it freely in public NO that’s NOT gonna change. Here’s another does Dr’s drink a beer b4 they do surgery proly proly not , does airline pilot’s fly drunk Yep there’s been a few but on very rare occasion cuz i dont hear about it everyday. Im from Iowa an our Norml director is Carl Olsen and i’d like to have a good convo with him maybe give some ideas, but he’s proly too busy helping with our fight here in Iowa.

  19. Probably the biggest ‘propaganda wash’ job of all this is that ‘schizophrenia’ is probably the most widely-used term in all of medicine. 99% of people, when hearing the word ‘schizophrenia’ think it means ‘split-personality,’ when nothing could be further from the truth. I thought the same, before I did a tiny little bit of research. Hell, tinnitus (theh perpetual/temporary ringing one ‘hears’ when one is subjected to too-loud music for too long; who hasn’t been subjected to blasting music? Who hasn’t gone to a concert, or even a bar, where it’s a well known fact that bars blare loud music because it causes people to talk less and drink more.)

Schizophrenia simply means ‘hearing “sounds” that are projected from the mind rather than from anything in the real world. (Even dictionary.com has a biased opinion, claiming it’s a ‘severe mental disorder.’)

Even before my traumatic brain injury (caused by alcohol, of course) I remember hearing series of clicks, or squeals, that I immediately recognized as something that was just being projected by my own mind and was not coming from some outside source. It can be caused by tiredness, or even contrarily awake-ness. Try laying down and closing your eyes and attempting to go to sleep when you’re fully awake, especially if you’ve had a few cans of soda/carbonated beverage with caffeine.

  20. I call Bullshyt. “Skitsofrenia” is an inhertint disease. It is not cause by cannabis. It is passed down through family gene’s.

  21. I have a 26 yr old son with SZ. We are tying to find MJ with the lowest CBD content. It is the THC that can cause the hallucinations. It is a new strain that has come out of the Oakland Clinic. We have to grow it at home in order to be able to try this for my son. Hope we can get hold of some to try. We have tried most of the anti-psychotics and other meds. Awful side effects and not much relief for anxiety or psychosis. When he almost over doesed, trying to find stress relief on anti anxiety meds, I listed to my other sons, who suggested we do the research ourselves with MJ. I am desperate to find something to help my son. We are in Ca. Hopefully we will have some good news when we are able to find the low CBD strains. I would appreciate any info on how others with SZ have found help with MJ. A desperate Mom who has never even tried this herself, believe it or not!!
    Thank you!!

  22. Sorry for the typos above. And I meant, when we can find the strains HIGH in CBD. We can’t afford to buy it at this point. So have to grow it and wait……..Social Security disability pay does not cover much.

  23. stoner’s world is much different from the hammerin agro consumin redneckin …..

situations often get WEIRD at the entwining intersection.

  24. re: CUD (cannabis use disorder). Another example of the refusal to admit the distinction between use and abuse. To the prohibitionist, all use is abuse. It’s hard to believe they actual believe their own BS, but if they do,I think there are millions of cannabis consumers who would be happy to tell them they are wrong.

  25. everyone just need to chill if u like it keep smoking, if u dnot who cares thats what makes us free!!!!

  26. i feel marijuana helps with schizo episodes and sometimes it makes it worse…very true…the reasons for schizofrenia and smoking are intertwined and complex and cannot be seen in black and white…also it is the untrained mind and not understanding the mind which makes schizophrenia worse….alcohol does too…it has to do with depression…acticities that can allow depression to grow like excessive tv or computer can bring on episodes if…if the mind is just forgotten about and “covered up”…meditation can help it can make it worse…its all the intention…ive found that not worrying about myself as much has been one of the benifits of this disease and it has made me more selfless and able to acomplish more than i use too….it can be a tool if you are not afraid of it…dont fear going crazy or losing your mind…attachment causes all suffering…Love and bliss for the entire universe!

  27. get on youtube ….. put, grass the history of marijuana
and let me know what ya think k

  28. Since when does anyone really believe what they read or hear from the MAIN STREAM MEDIA? Bottom line is if you don’t investigate issues yourself, your just another don’t give a care citizen. Main Stream Media just wants better ratings and get you to tune in and their not liable to date for their content or they’d get it right every time. Getting to the real truth in issues/facts takes more investigative work than the average reader/viewer cares to invest with their time. In short, Americans on average are gullible idiots, as the English population explains. Go ahead, ask your fellow Englishmen what they truly think of Americans, they’ll tell you. IDIOTS! That’s embarrassing but true on average or weed would be legal a long, long, time ago. Don’t believe anything till you do your homework on any issue or better yet turn that damn TV off and stop buying newspapers!

  29. What a load of crap on sz.from the republican(conservative) mainstream. My mother AND brother both have sz. I do not. I`ve smoked for 30 yrs. They never have. I`m healthy, they`re not. Wouldn`t I be pretty pre-disposed to that disease if all that bs WAS true? I`d certainly have it by now. I challenge anyone with a computer to google “medical cannabis” and do the research. Then let`s talk. Mainstream is still brainwashed from “Reefer madness” type hysteria thanks to William Randolph Hearst and Dupont.

  30. I was misdiagnosed with the illness schizophrenia/bipolar on several occasions, most times forcing me on horrible medications whereas I endured a tremendous amount of suffering.

At first I didn’t really think about the medical negligence. After some very disturbing circumstances, I set out to prove them wrong which took several trips to the asylum to do so, including risking lock-up in refusing to continue taking their medications. This is all documented.

The only thing that helped me in my recovery was marijuana, I promise. For the most part of the last two years, to avoid risk of being jailed, I have used opiates to manage my physical pain & emotional distress brought on – but not limited to – by a disease named ‘multifocal motor neuropathy’…

Please be pro-active in your healthcare & diagnosis no matter what the cost… a mind is a terrible thing to waste, especially when it’s your own!

  31. HA HA DISEASE!!

THEY JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO LABEL IT ANYMORE…

SO CANNABIS A DISEASE THE HELPS DIESEAS?

GREAT CHOICE OF WORDS I MUST SAY… NOT!!

  32. marijuana could not cause a disease unless it was alter it is just a herb that will never kill or make someone addicted, i guarantee prohibitionist use one of the follows caffeine, tobacco , alcohol which is far worst then marijuana

  33. You need to do a story on the ways in which hemp can be used as oil to power the world. It is a renewable resource and it is the right time to bring the subject up in response to the Gulf Coast oil spill.

    The time has come.

  34. Just remembering from past Psych classes that Schizophreneia is the result of an abnormality in the structure of the brain itself, and not the result of any external influences. So the claims that marijuana causes the disease is a misnomer. Perhaps marijuana use can exacerbate or mitigate the symptoms of the disease, not cause it.

  35. Thank you for posting this. Schizophrenia seems to run in my family. When I first started toking I hadn’t heard about the “connection”. Once I had, I figured the damage was already done lol

this is a huge relief to me. 🙂 Off to spread the word.

  36. in miami sucks trying to get weed i wish the laws pass down here “the change” lol

  37. I never smoked pot in junior high because I was convinced it would shrivel my incipient manhood. This was the 1980s, and those stark this-is-your-brain-on-drugs ads already had me vaguely worried about memory loss and psychosis. But when other boys said pot might affect our southern regions, I was truly terrified. I didn’t smoke a joint for the first time until I was 21.

By 12th grade, about half of young Americans have tried marijuana, which put me in the geeky other half. I used to think this was a good thing, since I never developed a taste for pot and avoided becoming dependent. But as the medical-marijuana movement flowered and weed’s p.r. improved, I often wondered if I shouldn’t have relished it as a kid, before I had a personal trainer to tsk-tsk my every vice. Shrinking testicles? Mushy brains? I came to see these as grotesqueries invented by antidrug propagandists.

It turns out that the study of marijuana’s health effects is at once more complex and less advanced than you might imagine. “Interpretations [of marijuana research] may tell more about [one’s] own biases than the data,” writes Mitch Earleywine in Understanding Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence, published in August by Oxford. For example: “Prohibitionists might mention that THC [delta-9 tetra-hydrocannabinol, the smile-producing chemical in pot] often appears in the blood of people in auto accidents. Yet they might omit the fact that most of these people also drank alcohol. Antiprohibitionists might cite a large study that showed no sign of memory problems in chronic marijuana smokers. Yet they might not mention that the tests were so easy that even a demented person could perform them.”

    look up real info

  38. The science of marijuana–especially its potential medical uses–is malleable because it’s so young and so contradictory. Although preliminary data are promising, scientists haven’t definitively shown that the drug can safely treat nausea or pain or anything, really. Some experts claim the U.S. government has sabotaged medical-marijuana research, and there is evidence to support them. Even so, in the past few years scientists have made rapid advances in their basic understanding of how Cannabis sativa works. By 1993, researchers had found the body’s two known receptors for cannabinoids, the psychoactive chemicals in the plant (THC is the main one, but there are at least 65 others). Since then, there has been important new work in several fields that users, potential users and former users should know about–and that voters should take into account before deciding whether to legalize pot.

So much new research has appeared that in November the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and the National Institute on Drug Abuse will publish a 100-page supplement devoted entirely to marijuana. The Journal gave Time an advance look; it’s a comprehensive review that will annoy both sides in the drug war. You won’t find clear evidence that pot is good or evil, but the research sheds light on some of the most important questions surrounding the drug

  39. No one has ever died of THC poisoning, mostly because a 160-lb. person would have to smoke roughly 900 joints in a sitting to reach a lethal dose. (No doubt some have tried.) But that doesn’t mean pot can’t contribute to serious health problems and even DEAth–both indirectly (driving while stoned, for instance) and directly (by affecting circulation, for example). A paper published last year in the journal Angiology found 10 odd cases in France of heavy herbe smokers who developed ischemia (an insufficient blood supply) in their limbs, leading in four cases to amputations. It’s not clear that marijuana caused the decreased blood flow, but the vascular problems did worsen during periods of heavy use. Another 2001 paper, in Circulation, found a nearly fivefold increase in the risk for heart attack in the first hour after smoking marijuana–though statistically that means smoking pot is about as dangerous for a fit person as exercise.

  40. Directed to # 41 and any others who might have misunderstood my comment. I’m referring to a ‘DISEASE’ I have had going on 25 years… named ‘Multifocal Motor Neuropathy’ an autoimmune ‘DISEASE’ that interrupts the signals from my brian & muscle function that causes extreme muscle atrophy in my upper and lower extremities.

  42. People want causality. People simply love to blame. Blame someone, dont help them, less you get caught in their blame. It is just so much easier to be delusional it would seem. People cannot handle being responsible for their actions and seldom want to help others. We prefer punishments and false causality.

Getting past the BS in research into these life altering diseases is not easy nor will it ever be. No one is willing to pay for proper sample sizes nor are the people performing the studies incapable of true lack of bias. From the start you have to have some premise to study right? Sadly it is usually not one of science but of morally influenced hyperbole that is funded.

Regardless of what NIDA and others want to show as proof they are allowing some unfettered research about cannabis into the light, those people are 100% backed by the pharmaceutical people. I’m not a raging tinfoil hat person on this either. Its simple business and how you make shrinks out of people. They all go to the same programs in school, using similar methods, and then as a group reference the same materials they’ve learned are the voice of truth. The only problem is that it is based on poor science and pharmacology that might as well be from the dark ages.

The bible of the industry is the DSM-IV. When it comes to cannabis, it is clearly biased towards demonizing use without enough substantiation for the classifications contained.

To this end, mental disorders connected with marijuana use merit their own category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV, published by the American Psychiatric Association. These include Cannabis Intoxication (consisting of impaired motor coordination, anxiety, impaired judgment, sensation of slowed time, social withdrawal, and often includes perceptual disturbances; Cannabis Intoxication Delirium (memory deficit, disorientation); Cannabis Induced Psychotic Disorder, Delusions; Cannabis Induced Psychotic Disorder, Hallucinations; and Cannabis Induced Anxiety Disorder.

These sound harmless but it allows someone to “examine” you by the courts and point to a classification of disorders completely caused by cannabis consumption. Especially from the drug court mandated helpers. “Your honor, regardless of the fact this person has just returned from 4 years of sustained combat, he is obviously just under the influence of marijuana …”

Most SZ patients lose touch with reality. If you told them paint fumes from Europe were causing this, they’d believe you. I’ve rarely met a patient who will blame their self medicating efforts for the disease. And the one’s I have met were all told this by someone in the medical profession with an axe to grind against cannabis users in general.

Cannabis may not be a good thing for some of the population, but is far less harmful on the whole than a myriad of other things in our lives.

  43. In regards to #46, people dont bother to watch the fact Sandy is actually showing how insane the DSM-IV is. Sometimes things are not what they appear to be.

She covers caffeine and a few others that have similar listings in the DSM comparable to the cannabis disorders listed. I guess I should have hit refresh before I spammed my post covering the DSM. 🙂

  44. smoking for 35 years and yes, this is what i needed. My great family declared me scysofrenic just because i smoke and it gives me fun in my life.
what is it that these puritans always want to destroy other peoples happiness.
KEEP ON SMOKING. doing it for more then 30 years and its great.
all these cheating ‘ronald reagans” and his beautiful wife, Nancy, a good image of a totally neurotic woman. Who could have better smoked a few joints then to screw so many peoples life.
as far as medical is concerned, i should be able to get it, my doctor gives me the recepy. it is better for me to smoke then to take morphine.
noticed that with smoking i do not need even half the dose of morphine. but to my surprise?
its more cheap in the coffeshop then in the chemist.
so what is it that it needs to be so expensive.
WEED SHOULD BE PRICED LIKE SPINACHE, it grows like spinache!!!!!!!
HOW CAN this be???? are we again getting cheated by smart white collor people? or is this why we can not grow a few plants for personal use….then the government does not make any money on us,,,
you should try to count out how much tax is payed in holland on this “Illegal dangerous drug””
such stupid gsme on a drug who has proved him self to be a lot less ‘dangerous’then alcohol and all the other jammy tablets your doctor will give you to keep you stupid and into the system.
Joho keep smoking, take care youre body and health, eat well, and there is no danger.
By now i would have had no braincell left if all these stories are true.
luckily i can still mange the laces of my shoes, and to cook food, and i am not running through town, drooling and being funny??
what a joke, enjoy, enjoy and enjoy.

Whatever, JUST SMOKE, its all crapp what they are telling us, whole tribes of people seem to have survived, the terrible danger of “smoking POT”, and are still working, living, loving, raising kids etc. etc.
    do not believe the puritans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and everybody, keep fighting for a free ganja smoking world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    love

  45. Does marijuana use cause schizofrenia, or does schizofenia cause marijuana use. Has anyone ever studied whether people predisposed to mental disorders may also be predisposed to drug use and or abuse. I smoked for 30 years and I suffer no paranoid episodes nor any other mental disorders. I had to quit because I may have to go to court to take away custody from my ex wife because she is addicted to prescription pain killers and Xanax and any other depressant she can get her hands on. All legal and prescribed by her many doctors. Yet she was so wasted on them last year that she had 30 cops looking for our missing child, when she was told that I was going to pick her up from school, and later that I had picked her up from school. Two minutes from the Amber Alert the cops got me on the phone to call the whole thing off. The next morning she calls and asks if I have her. Smoking weed doesn’t make her do this just the pills. Weed actually makes her somewhat happy and tolerable. But the bottom line is… I think her drug use stems from her mental state more than her mental state stems from her drug use.

  46. fuck the goverment…………. we run this shit we are just scare well not me fuck u

  47. Well, It seems all the recreational smokers have put they’re foot in it this time and Medical consumers? If your almost dead and you survive the waiting period and the trial of other drugs offered by law first for approval of your Doctor’s “request” for medical marijuana. The feds agree with nothing that doesn’t benefit them. and not the first time it’s taken a good thing and turned it into darkness. By legalizing medical marijuana the A.M.A will now reclassify prescription marijuana, you’ll be better off getting caught with morphine. You people have and are walking right into it,singing they’re song… Hi Ho, Hi Ho it’s off to jail you’ll go. You will wish for the old way everyday. Sorry to blow the smoke out of your eyes. Understand this think this to yourself once a day … The Feds will never ever never legalize marijuana. and all growers and enablers and users that have exposed themselves. Sorry for you when the Feds draw the curtain closed on this whole peoples victory? You’ll all understand ironic fate. Duke Deltree from the Great State of Maine

  48. okay, Schizophrenia and pot, connected its hard to tell. im related to a schizophrenic and my best friend thinks he may be exibiting symptoms. Schizophrenia works kind of like this, it remains dormant until the person experiences one or two very stressfull situations or multiple stressfull occurences, marijuana at times can be stressfull, due to parinoia. the illness can also be offset by loss of a loved one or a tragic accident. other triggers are scary/creepy movies being alone or lack of sleep. id say weed can cause the illness to surface but you just have to be carefull, smoke in a safe peacefull enviorment with a few friends. avoid consuming in large quantities or high potentcy. on the other hand, weed could calm patients if they were under stress as long as they were smart about the variables. thx peace out

  49. You make a really good point ‘Duke Deltree’ if the American people continued to believe that the federal government is more powerful than our nation on the whole, but state by state is voting otherwise. The tide is changing and power is being taking back by the people. One ‘STAR’ on the flying red, white & blue flag at a time.

Fortunately for all of us, we out number the few that believe their scheme would live on forever. Look around you, people from all walks of life are realizing the corrupt nature of those few who are pushing for a one world government – who steal away our liberties and thrust death and destruction amid lie after lie thats being exposed more each and every day. The Federal Reserve & Banker bailout is a prime example of regular US citizens, both the young & old – learning the art of government – has been one cover up and hoodwink after another.

For myself, the issue is much greater than ‘Cannabis Law Reform’ and an individual being able to legally consume marijuana to medicate or partake in and use recreationally. There is not ONE good reason why American farmers are forbidden to grow industrial hemp while US troops are put in harms way guarding the harvest of poppy fields in Afghanistan. The poppy harvest is over and coincidentally, Obama has just ordered 1200 troops/national guard to the border to what? Help catch illegal aliens, it sure makes me wonder about a hidden agenda…

We’re a resilient nation led by red blooded patriots rising to the ranks of real change and transparency. I choose to believe America will get it right, before it gets it wrong again… I’m personally done doing it the wrong way, I’m in the fight to help get it right.

  50. Duke Deltree fuck u man i sent you a e-joint to chill the fuck out if it was not for us the us will not be free to use whatever we want so fuck u

  51. hey folks, this article and your imput has certainly been a benefit to me. your responses are not a goverment study..its the word of those that know first hand….how can we get all this on the front page of yer local hearld tribune……us schizos found some peace with herb..its good to most people. ive considered it an enhancement to my life for 32 years. its got me out of alotta jams thru my life most, of them in my head.it gives me a great perspective to cope.i have worked all my adult life and paid my own way around the block.im good to my neighbors and love life just as a man who does not consume. cannabis allows that an, im grateful for it. pass the peace pipe. get a big draw for me cause drug testing is the only thing stopping me….peace to all.

  52. it is insane to me that people fight so hard to keep marijuana illegal in all aspects then blatantly lie about the effects. what about all of the pills doctors give out a year that over time rot away livers and kidneys. that shit they try to sell on tv isnt illegal, even though every time i see a commercial for these miracle drugs it is followed by another informing of some class action lawsuit for the deaths and illnesses of those whohave purchased the drug. am i the only one that sees something wrong with this? and what about the thousands that die a year from drinking and driving. marijuana dosn’t make me sick, its these coke head hypicrites that use marijuana regulations that are just outdated and a social view of the plant that has held since the 30s. marijuana isnt evil, ronald and nancy regan are. lets put another innocent tax payer behind bars. fuck u iowa taskforce and crawford county police, do another rail u cocksuckin’ pigs

  53. I don’t know what I can say that hasn’t already been said by NORML about the positive effects of legalizing marijuana for adults. I realize we have all been lied to about reefer madness and gateway theories from early childhood on for about 80 years now or more. At what point in our adult lives, are we given the opportunity to be trusted with administering our own remedies for peace and stress relief?? I view marijuana as a safe, effective, yet mild, mood enhancer and pain reliever, as do countless other people. Yet marijuana remains illegal. I developed paranoid schizophrenia at age 27. I am now 43. My maternal grandmother has parkinson’s disease which is similar to schizophrenia in that the brain chemical levels like seratonin and dopamine are not quite right and/or the brain receptors and transmitters misfire. My maternal aunt has Mirh’s disease (ringing in ears), my maternal uncle was diagnosed with and medicated for depression or bipolar disorder. My brother has told me he has heard voices in his head before during times of extreme stress and my mom continues to live on the cusp of a bipolar diagnosis herself, in my opinion. In spite of my family history, I was blamed for causing my own mental illness by my mom and several others for many years now because I used marijuana. One of the first psychologists/psychiatrists assigned to me told me himself that if my psychosis was drug induced the symptoms would have went away when I was hospitalized without access to marijuana. Nearly all my friends have used marijuana quite a bit and none of them have a mental illness. In fact, many of them have professional jobs and stable families. I am not a doctor or professional at anything, but I would like my wisdom and knowledge to count for something in today’s world also. When I tell you that it’s not the marijuana that makes you paranoid, it’s the prohibition LAW, you will all probably agree. The great hope that I had for the Obama administration regarding the reform of marijuana laws, has now dwindled considerably with last months federal drug policy report and 2011 budget appropriations for enforcement. Am I the only one that feels sometimes that I might get a better audience by talking to the walls of my house than public comments?? One of NORML’s directors spoke at last years Seattle hempfest about hemp farming for paper and seed proteins and fibers never being able to compete with 20yr. growth cycles of trees because of the prohibition. The YouTube video GRASS-the history of marijuana, I watched repeatedly trying to understand why WE as a population of adults continue to allow the prohibition in the first place. I see too many cops on the payroll for marijuana prohibition never wanting their own paychecks to be affected. I see isolated horror stories about people with reefer madness hurting themselves or others receiving national media attention, while the vast majority of marijuana users know full well that they don’t have those same problems with use. I have been frustrated and unhappy with marijuana prohibition laws all of my adult life so far. I hope and pray for the day when ALL users of marijuana can be thought of in positive ways instead of as terrible filthy disgusting people. It would be nice to be thought of as equals for a change. 🙂

  54. Ok I don’t need to hear what’s the Lord has to do with this or If you do not have a “God” this is how most of the Country thinks regardless of your belief, thank you.

    I have asked myself, of what am I accused, have I injured any man or offended my Lord God. There is no man before me that I have injured and have not offended my Lord. But the Lord has kept his promise, for the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are far off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. { ACTS 2:39}

What is the promise and the Covenant, In my understanding; and God said; Let the earth bring forth grass, and herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and God saw it was good.

Man’s wisdom alone with out the Father’s wisdom is a shallow and usually wicked and self serving of man. The Father’s wisdom is given to men, so he may live well in his garden, and in his garden the Father put all things that are good, of him, not of man.

It is not the herbs that are evil, the Father saw it was good green and seed bearing. Its man’s law that makes greedy and evil men try to make the Lord’s promise a lie.

But the Lord said that no promise of his will be made a lie.

And God said, Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepth upon the face of the earth.

So God created man in his own image, In the image of God he created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing moveth upon the earth. And God said, Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of the earth, and every tree, in the which
    is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. { GENESES 1:26-29 }

    These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens. And every plant of the field before it it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew. { GENESES 2:4-5 }

The Lord God is of all things and had all things before it grew.

    For the earth which drinkth in the rain that come oft upon it, and bringth forth herbs meet for them by whom it was dressed receveth blessings from God.{ HEBREWS 6:7 }

Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputation. For one who beliveth that he may eat of all things; another who is weak eateth herbs, Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth; for God hath received him.
    { ROMANS 14:1-3 }

    And God blessed Noah and his sons; and said unto them. Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the face of the earth. And upon all of the fishes of the sea, into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even the green herb have I given you all things. { GENESES 9:1-3 }

The herb that has offended the State, not a man, a thing, a faceless system that is somehow offended by the benign herb marijuana, promotes strong drink and its sin to humanity is not in question. For it makes money for the State in more Police, Lawyers, Court cost, and most important fines, ruining lives. I do not know how many marijuana users you know of, but I am sure you all know a drunken fool or worse someone killed by an alcoholic.

What makes you think that the Lord would dwell in anything created by the hand of man.

    The righteous perish and no man lay it to his heart; and the merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil that is to come. { ISAIAH 57:1 }

The only way the herb marijuana has ruined lives is when man in his wisdom has decided that the Father’s wisdom that God said; It was good. Man said; It was bad and passed a law on a benign herb from the Father, openly given in Scripture.

Arrested and ruined countless lives with an unjustifiable prosecution of the innocent. The Teacher
    The Lord Jesus the Christ said; Judge not according to the appearance, But judge righteous judgment. { JOHN 7:24 }

The State, not a man, a thing, not the Lord says that I have done evil, but no man injured by me accuses me. The Father is not offended if I have his gifts. I have done no evil, I am blameless before my Creator and man. The scripture says, My defense is of God which saveth the upright of heart.
    { PSALM 7:10 }

  56. on #73 I am grateful for any discussion on Cannabis and Christianity. I wrote above in #30. I have a son with schizophrenia, age 26. I am DESPERATE to find a strain that will help or replace his toxic medications with huge serious side effects. I am a Christian Mom, never tried MJ.I am not concerned about the legal aspect. I think it should be legalized. But I still struggle with the moral or spiritual implications. It is not discussed adequately in Christian circles. Drink but don’t be drunk, is a principle from scripture. Don’t overeat.etc….self control. Don’t be controlled!
Honor the government. Rom 13. even if they be evil!
Stay away from any appearance of evil. Don’t be a stumbling block to you brother even if you have the liberty to do something. These are just a few of the things I struggle with.
I see MJ as possibly a miracle alternative medication for my son, so I go forward. But, in all honesty, I am trying to discern if I am breaking any Biblical principles. The pastors in the churches are not too informed, so I don’t get help there. we are in Ca. It is breaking a federal law. I am a libertarian, so I get joy out of taking the federal gov’t on. But, I wish I could go about all this with a clear conscience. If it were not for my son, I would have never ventured down this path. Yet, my medicine cabinet is full of RX medications. I also wish the drug subculture was not tied in with the whole thing. It does not make it any easier for me. Just trying to think out loud here and would welcome any thoughtful replies that will appreciate my dilemma. I also have the memories of calling the cops out on my sons growing MJ as young teens and the like. Not that I would go for MJ use as a teen. But, it just adds to the mix of a situation that I am trying to work thru.
Thanks for listening. A concerned Mother and hopefully a practicing Christian. Any links that I might be referred to for more debate?

  57. I mean thank you to 71 for bringing up anything that the Bible may say or principles to be learned.

  58. To 74: Thank you for your kind thoughts. You’ve made my heart smile. The Lord’s wisdoms that were given to humanity are true and are needed more then ever. You and yours are in my prayers and may the Lord walk closely with your family and strengthen you in the struggle.

  59. What about kids and pot. My 15 year old son thinks its ok to smoke pot. I am afraid there will be long term health problems from this. I am also afraid he will become a couch potato….any advise would be much appreciated.

[Editor’s note: Like alcohol products, cannabis is not for kids. Unfortunately, cannabis prohibition laws not only don’t prevent adults from accessing the herb, the average age of first use in the US–despite DARE programs and PDFA ads all over the media for over 20 years–is between 13-14 years old. So what is a parent to do?

    1) Like Bob Marley preached: ‘Be honest with the children’
    2) Teach children the more important lesson (for cannabis and alcohol) to recognize the difference between ‘use’ and ‘abuse’.
    3) Encourage them to read…two books that come to mind that are good starting places:
    a) It’s Just A Plant, by Ricardo Cortes (for young children)
    b) From Chocolate to Morphine, by Andrew Weil, MD & Winifred Rosen (for teens)

Also, the NORML Women’s Alliance is most certainly concerned with these matters!]

  60. As an AoD/IDDT therapist (Alcohol other Drug/Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment for both addicted as well as mentally challenged individuals) I thought it may interest you all to know the new DSM manual, which is the manual used by the professionals in the mental health field, will be out in new publication next year (??) I think it’s very important to be real about the diagnosis of marijuana dependence or abuse because it occurs, not because marijuana is the devil drug, but because addictive, compulsive behaviors are real. I would hate to see marijuana itself go down as a just another dope junkie’s get high off of because truly anyone who knows knows that picture speaks more then bong hits or joints.

  61. Fucking media. It’s like watching a bunch of church go-ers believe that god is upon them.

  62. i was told today by a drug officer at probation office tha marijuana was a mind altering drug i had to laught cause i found it funny ,i told him that i dont smoke to get high i do for the benifits behind smoking it ,i work 2 jobs and hurt all the time and smoking helps with that ,and if i dont smoke it takes me forever 2 go to sleep,i only get 5 hrs a night anyway

  63. to any mom out there i was 10 the first time i smoked im 36 now and i have 2 kids i dont hide it from them and i teach them the good behind smoking and also teach them that there are bad drugs out there and if it aint natural they shouldnt do it thats like all of you saying apples or bannas are bad for them face it there a lot of things that can kill ya such as to much red meat or ciggs but if there 18 thats ok ,or 21 they can drink,i dont hear anyone bitching about them smoking ciggs at 12 or drinking at 15 think about that one then u can bitch

  64. when i was married, my wife always knew when i had
smoked pot. being a minute man disappered, i learned
pot helped my premature ejaculation. smoking to much
pot has caused me not to come, i learned to control
by eating something, if you can’t come, take a break
eat something then resume. another medical use for pot.

    james

  65. mr average joe that dosnt smoke weed and has never in his life has a panic attack, or a nervous break down thats not brought about by the devils weed, but a weed smoker does the exact same thing, then ‘yeah that was caused by weed’ sais a speculator and he gets believed. thought we had got rid of the days of witch hunts?.
just more scare mongering by politicians to make the public beleive so they can have a reason to outlaw it for the ‘benefit of society’ and keep the chemical producing pharmacutical companies controling us with their prescribed ‘LEGAL’ drugs, simply cause they cant replicate the medicinal properties of marijuana.
i was diagnosed with post traumatic stress after serving in iraq and afghan, tried the docs pills and therapy which didnt work, now i self medicate with marijuana and i can sleep better, eat better and generaly all round feel better.
its just all about control people.

  66. Well said John D… This is a ‘GREAT’ blog worth sharing with everyone!

I hope you live in a State that doesn’t induce more stress simply to obtain a remedy that ails you.

    pEACE!

  67. I hope someone will be able to share any strains that they found helpful for Schizophrenia and in what way they helped. Thank you. A desperate Mom!

  68. thanks for the replies. Since I have posted, I have look high and low for HIGH CBD strains in So Cal. NOT AVAILABLE 🙁

  69. My bi-polar disorder was made much more manageable after i quit smoking pot… i guess, like most things, it depends on the person.

  70. over use of marijuana can cause your brain to stop producing dopamine, because you have replaced it with another pleasure signal. when you stop using is when you feel “crazy” because you can no longer enjoy anything. i think adults should be allowed to make their own decisions. with any drug.

[Paul Armentano responds: Cannabinoids interact with CB1 receptors in the limbic system which is associated with mood regulation. I do not believe that there is evidence at this time clarifying the relationship between cannabinoids and dopamine stimulation.]

  71. i have skitzophrenia and what i have to say is that marijuana does help me it makes it easier to think and the personality that i lost when i wanst skitzophrenic seem so to be easily re-seen i love to smoke but i have no reason for a medical card because theres not that much study done whith my skitzophenia and majiana effect yeh… it sucks

  72. I have been schitzoaffective since I was 15. My childhood was the cause, from what my psychiatrists have determined. A very abusive place to live in and the loss of my father, at an early age, were the triggers. I started smoking in my early teens to deal with the abuses I was living with. After my diagnosis was determined, I was told that smoking would worsen the effects of my illness. I learned that the truth was the complete opposit. I smoked daily and was better able to deal with the paranoia and voices in my head. I slowed down considerably after I got married at age 20. I felt that my children shouldn’t be unwillingly exposed. My wife was a smoker so we hid ourselves behind closed doors. My wife died in 2000. I lost all control of my faculties and my voices and paranoia and delusions became the worst they had ever been. A friend suggested a few drinks around evening to help calm me down. I tried that and the effects were minimal and truly didn’t do me any good. I started smoking daily again and found that things in my mind calmed to a level I was able to deal with. My psychiatrists started me on antipsychotics and my schitzoaffective disorder became nearly nonexistant. I still smoked. I have since developed several more diseases as side effects of the man-made drugs I was put on. Diabetes being the worst. If I had continued to smoke instead of using those drugs, I know I would be in much better shape. Does smoking marijuana cause mental illness? Not in my opinion. Does it help people in need of relief? Very much so. My most recent psychiatrist has already told me to smoke as needed and that when/if marijuana becomes legal in Illinois I will be one of the first in line with a script. They truly see the improvements that it has had on me and my condition. Just my 2 cents, legalizing, even if just for medical purposes, would be a Godsend for so many people.

  73. Hello, Your site appears to be great, I’ll say to how much period you could have put into this. Driving under the influence an opportunity you ought to take a look at this web-site at the same time. I am hoping you have a good working day!

  74. Take every ‘study’ ever done that’s used only pure THC or Dronabinol (Marinol synthetic THC) and chuck it out the window.

Those studies are simply studies of THC… not “Cannabis”.

The hingepin information that’s turning the tide is regarding the effects of Cannabidiol(CBD) on the human psyche.

Strains of cannabis that have a higher CBD than THC content will not get you high… the anti-psychotic properties of cannabidiol are really that strong.

Harlequin… a specific cannabis plant… produces 8% CBD and only 6% THC during flower. Even though the THC content is only 2% lower than the CBD… it’s completely impossible to get ‘High’, ‘stoned’ or otherwise ‘inebriated’ from using it, regardless of how much you use.

This means that, unlike Marinol or straight THC, you can medicate with it using levels you need… without it slowing you down or affecting your mtor skills or judgement.

High doses of Marinol (Dronabinol) will cause “Manic Psychosis” in just about everyone.

The kicker? Prohibition is almost directly responsible for the masive amounts of high THC… low CBD strains of cannabis available today.
    http://thecleangame.net/2013/10/prohibition-causes-psychosis/
These pressures have seriously increased the risk of cannabis induced psychosis events in young adults today.

The information tide is changing though, awesomeness is spreading in the land.

    Keep it Clean! 😀
