Several weeks ago, President Obama stated that he believed the subject of drug legalization and regulation was “an entirely legitimate topic for debate.” Yet recent actions by White House Office of National Drug Control Policy head Gil Kerlikowske imply that this administration has no interest in having this debate in the public arena — at least not in Seattle.
On Friday, February 18, the Seattle Times editorial board opined in favor of House Bill 1550, which legalizes and regulates the “production, distribution, and sale” of marijuana to adults. (You can contact your state elected officials in support of the measure here.) The editorial, titled “The Washington Legislature should legalize marijuana” did not mince words.
Marijuana should be legalized, regulated and taxed. The push to repeal federal prohibition should come from the states, and it should begin with the state of Washington.
… Some drugs have such horrible effects on the human body that the costs of prohibition may be worth it. Not marijuana. This state’s experience with medical marijuana and Seattle’s tolerance policy suggest that with cannabis, legalization will work — and surprisingly well.
Not only will it work, but it is coming.
According to Seattle Times editorial page editor Ryan Blethen, the public’s reaction to the paper’s pot-friendly position was overwhelming.
“It is rare we publish an editorial on a hot topic and receive near universal praise. But that is what happened last week when we came out in support of Washington state legalizing cannabis,” Bethen wrote in February 25 commentary. “When people take the time to e-mail or call me about an editorial, it is usually because they do not agree with the editorial page. This editorial was different. The compliments rolled in, the discussion in the comments section of the editorial is nearing 600 and is interesting and thoughtful — which is not always the case — and so far the editorial has been recommended by about 3,000 people on Facebook.”
Yet there was is one prominent, former Seattle resident who is clearly not amused by the Times call for “a sober discussion about marijuana.” That person is the Drug Czar, Gil Kerlikowske.
The Seattle alt-weekly The Stranger has the details — and they aren’t pretty.
White House Requests Meeting with Seattle Times to Bully Against Pro-Pot Editorials
via The Stranger
The Stranger has learned that immediately after the Seattle Times ran an editorial last week supporting a bill to tax and regulate marijuana, the newspaper got a phone call from Washington, D.C. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy director Gil Kerlikowske wanted to fly to Seattle to speak personally with the paper’s full editorial board.
The meeting is scheduled for next Friday, an apparent attempt by the federal government to pressure the state’s largest newspaper to oppose marijuana legalization. Or at least turn down the volume on its new-found bullhorn to legalize pot.
Bruce Ramsey, the Seattle Times editorial writer who wrote the unbylined piece, says the White House called right “right after our editorial ran, so I drew the obvious conclusion… he didn’t like our editorial.”
… This isn’t the first time the Obama Administration has campaigned to keep pot illegal. Kerlikowske, who is also Seattle’s former police chief, also traveled to California last fall to campaign against Prop 19, a measure to decriminalize marijuana and authorize jurisdictions to tax and regulate it.
NORML Has long argued that pot prohibition can not withstand careful and consistent scrutiny from the mainstream media. The Drug Czar knows this to be true better than anyone; hence the White House’s need to try and squelch any media-led ‘legitimate debate.’ Fortunately, the genie is out of the bottle and isn’t going back — at least not in Seattle. In fact, just days after The Drug Czar’s phone call, the Seattle Times reiterated their editorial support for legalization, stating “the costs of prohibition in police, courts, jails, gang warfare, civil liberties and blighted lives are too high, especially for a product that lends itself so well to be handled like alcohol.”
Like it or not President Obama, you are going to get your debate. We’re ready; are you?

A dollar a joint legalization project (google it or visit adaj.us)
The monkey is out of the bottle man….
why does he even exist? Hopefully the Seattle Times will not back down. WE NEED TO ABOLISH ALL THE CZAR’S. This is America. I have been nothing but disappointed by the Obama administration and I guess its just going to keep going that way.
Gil Kerlikowske needs to take his head out of his ass and stop the waste of our tax money on marijuana proabition
of course kerlikowski is opposed to legalization… i bet the makes over $100 grand a year… illegal = job security.
This is awesome, it’s time for change Obama.
It does not matter how long they try to continue to fight this, the fact is, there are so many people in our country that think it should be legalized,so this is not going to go away… ever….or until they legalize it. This will outlast anyone in office, and this will always be debatable. You people who have your alcohol, is one thing, but just think if they took that away from you, permanately, and dicussion was off the table. People think that alcohol is the Devil’s friend, and that could very well be true.Just ask any MADD. I personally think they need to go back to the days of prohibition, where alcohol is outlawed. Let’s see how many politicians could go without that….PERMANATELY!
We are not going away! It is that simple.
I say it’s time every paper get in the face of Gil Kerlikowski and DEMAND to know what they think they are going to do if the pro-pot editorials DON’T STOP.
Well Gil? What ARE you going to do, arrest the editor?
Bring it on.
Glad to see some big media outlets finally coming out from under the curtains to support big changes. It’s no surprise that the Obama Administration would step in with their influence. It’s like the unspoken enforcement of the drinking age; mandated by states, not federal government, yet the feds pressure the states by threatening no funding if the 21+ ever gets lowered. At least with cannabis I hope the Federal government can keep at least some composure and let the people have what they vote for.
so, this meeting is with the press – couldn’t they do something to ensure their meeting is “live” on national or at least local TV or on the internet?
like “Surprise, Kerlikowske, we’re streaming our meeting! Now what did you want to talk about?”
i just hope the Seattle Times doesn’t give in…
As the DEA prepares to license the patents the government has on Cannabis, this should really be seen as not a prohibition issue but rather a corporate monopoly issue enforced by the DEA.A quarter billion dollars has been spent on Sativex alone in the US in “bribes” to the FDA.
And the infamous government patents on Cannabis neuroprotection are worth billions more to big pharma. This is the real agenda driving present Cannabis suppression by LE.Witness the new laws seeking to outlaw the only truly quantifiable dose preparations, infused edibles and tinctures. They are already quashing the competition before it can get a foothold. Make no mistake prohibition will be nothing compared to corporate control with the DEA to enforce with civil law to sue any challenge into destitution and Cannabis as we know it will remain a crime.Expect duplicity from this liar regime.
How many times does your president have to lie to you for you NOT TO BELIEVE HIM?
We have been screwed over since the federal reserve act, and people still give the government credit for things like a job bill or stimulus. Those were child’s play as far as change is concerned.
Unity is the way America! Live free!
Tear em up. They got nothing.
Its about time some media outlets help end the reaffer madness government conspiricy
Finally, Truth reins over Pressure. We need to keep comending actions like the Editorial that the Seattle Times did. We need to lend our support to them and let them know that.
The Truth will set you Free, And in this case help Legalize cannabis, The governments arguments against are based on lies and propaganda not the truth or facts, Go Seattle Times! Now is the time for everyone to stand up for what is right!
“Marijuana should be legalized, regulated and taxed.”
I vote yes!
YOU GO WASHINGTON! ITS TIME WE ALL STOOD UP AND SAID COME ON DEBATE!
Protest Friday March 4th
http://alaskanactivism.blogspot.com/2011/02/seattle-protest-march-4th-support.html
Very good news. cant wait for the debate
I am glad to see that the media is finally doing the right thing and not caving in to political pressure. It is ridiculous that the Federal Government of this country has been allowed to run all over state rights for so long on so many different occasions, including marijuana legislation. What the people of Washington, or any other state for that matter, decide to do in terms of pot legalization is of no business to the Federal government or any other state throughout the country. It is about time that the people and media outlets of individual states stand up for themselves on a variety of issues, and tell the Feds to go shove it!
People in positions of public service are suppose to be listening to the public, not telling the public what they’re to think…right? So why does anyone care what his opinion is, and for that matter….who cares what President Obama thinks? Both of them need to do what the people tell them to do, and damn what they think of it. The idea of Czar Kerlikowski campaigning to sway public opinion is not in his job description, but we’re paying him to do it!?
Hey NORML, is this meeting going to be televised on the web so we can watch and listen?? Or is it going to be behind closed doors?? Is NORML going to be invited to this as well? Let us know please.
I love NORML!!!
Buckle down Mr. President… it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
I can not even begin to fathom, while under prohibition policy, why alcohol is legal when it causes more health, social, and legal problems than any other drug. It’s very often associated with domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, family breakups (wonder about the 50%+ divorce rate?), and substantial accidents caused by drunk driving. I think if any other drug caused an upwards of 40%+ traffic accidents that it would be made illegal almost immediately. Yet, we arrest people for marijuana which causes you to be hungry, sometimes drowsy, and a host of non-life-threatening nuances (not nearly as bad as alcohol).
And, instead of blaming the problems on alcohol, we instead decide to blame it on marijuana (& other drugs). By arresting people, you are literally creating a culture, or population, of so-called “criminals”. This, in effect, creates an immeasurable social cost to our society (& morals). So instead of blaming others, all you whiskey lovin’, prohibition supporting activists should take a real hard look in the mirror. But then again, it shouldn’t be hard at all to see the horrendous mess you people have created. It’s your fault. Own up. It’s funny: a lot of the things we as Americans discourage, we do the very exact things we’re “against”. Please, you’re being selfish with your acquiescent alcohol stand, and your drug war status quo, discriminatory, death-promoting, violence-inducing policies.
P.S. For those Glee fans who watched the ‘youth alcohol use’ episode, why did they claim that only 400 people die from alcohol poisoning each year? The real number is *at least* 15,000 yearly in the United States (1/3 or 5,000 of those are under 21).
I find it amazing that the Federal government is still stonewalling with their lies about marijuana, when the truth has been scientifically proven over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. That’s what I call a bunch of asshole idiots.
This simply cannot be just about “drugs” any more. It’s about money. I believe it is the work of the pharmaceutical companies and oil companies, whose obscene profits will suffer greatly if this God given plant is legalized. Our politicians are puppets who dance on the strings of big industry, and they keep their own citizens enslaved in a mockery of freedom.
Fuck you, Gil Kerlikowske, fuck you.

Absolutely right on, Paul Armentano!
That’s the whole problem with a corrupt government policy of longstanding prohibition|persecution of American citizens and a harmless plant based solely upon a foundation of lies. The lies keep changing in order to meet the changing perceptions of the subjugated people they have been designed to control — and the lies become contradictory and utterly impossible to maintain.
Thanks to NORML, MPP, and numerous other organizations and thousands of activists, the cacophony of lies spewed by the government in alliance with private for-profit special interests has been revealed as baseless propaganda. The list of beneficial properties of medical marijuana continues to increase, to the point that cannabis may well be considered the “Tree of Life”.
The scientifically significant medical studies of cannabis’s unique properties must originate from overseas, because virtually all scientific studies in the USA have been squashed. And yet in spite of the restraints on domestic studies, the USA government itself has managed to obtain patent #6630507 on the medical applications of cannabis, in 2003. And there were medical studies in the early years of the War on Drugs that indicated that cannabis cured cancer — that was in 1973 or 1974. Hypocrisy, hello?
So, all evidence points to the conclusion that the government knew that cannabis cures cancer. There have been government funded scientific studies which concluded that cannabis was only marginally harmful to society (La Guardia & Shafer Commissions), and recommended either decriminalization or outright re-legalization — both studies were shelved and squashed. And cannabis has an LD (Lethal Dose) of 50,000 — you are more likely to die from drinking too much water than to die of consuming too much cannabis. If the government was actually formed for the benefit of We the People, cannabis would already have been re-legalized decades ago.
But like the “Wizard of Oz”, when the curtain is pulled back, those that are operating the controls on society (and on cannabis persecution) turn out to be the private for-profit crony corporate interests, under the auspices of the power of government itself. The latest example is the DEA reclassification of extracts of cannabis to Schedule 3 from Schedule 1 — but Only for the fiscal benefit of Big Pharma. Meanwhile, another generation of citizens are subject to arrest and poverty, or of a debilitating or fatal illness, while a curative plant that could be grown like a weed in people’s gardens is kept illegal. Our own government has been killing its citizens, for the sole benefit of the bottom line of private for-profit corporations. That is a core principle of fascism — “Private profit and socialized risk”.
Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske, Attorney General Eric Holder, DEA head Michelle Leonhart, our politicians and especially our President Barack Obama have a lot to answer for for continuing this madness — this “Reefer Madness”.
If the government
Sounds like the White House is doing exactly what ever other dictatorship is doing. Forcing their opinion onto everyone & forcing the people underground. Well it sounds like there is enough support to move this conversation to Twitter for a rebellion! haha 🙂
I have to disagree about handling cannabis/hemp like alcohol. It should be handled more like tomatoes, since it’s a PLANT, and should be treated as such. It is also a food, which doubly reinforces the idea that the tomato model would be far more appropriate…so let’s get right tothe “meat and potatoes” of this idea, shall we?
With tomatoes, there are strains you eat, strains specifically for commercial processing, and heritage strains. Same with cannabis/hemp.
Farmers tend to grow a majority of commercial strains of tomatoes for the food processing market, mainly for their high pulp content used in ketchup and sauces.
People tend to grow a few plants at home, and noone breaks down their doors, raids their homes, or murders their pets in front of their children.
Industry knows that they have a well established market that a few home growers isn’t going to destroy. EVER. (Honest industries adjust strategy to match market conditions, you understand…)
For those who grow a few too many tomatoes in their gardens, they tend to either give their overproduction away to family and friends, or take it to the local farmer’s market and earn a little extra income from it. Not enough to retire on, but maybe enough to go out on the town, see a movie and get dinner every now and again. If they live out in the country, they can set up roadside stands, put their tomatoes out by the roadside, and people simply pick up what they need and leave a few bucks for the folks who grew the tomatoes.
So the ONLY thing that should be different in the cabbabis/hemp model vs. the tomato model is that noone in their right mind would EVER put a fresh harvest of Durban Poison or White Widow out at the roadside!
All that having been said, there should NEVER be any form of taxation applied to ANY medical product, and this applies to medicinal herbs, cannabis definitely being included in this group. Now, for “recreational” or “casual” use, it’s a different story…the SEED should remain wholly untaxed, as it is useful as a source of food, but when used as a safe, non-toxic, natural “weekend relaxant” (i.e.: in addition to, or replacing alcohol) as tens of millions of people in North America do, this is not a “purely medicinal use”, and should be fair game for retail sales and noone should be shocked at the idea that retail sales of cannabis for non-medicinal or non-food purposes are fair to tax using the sales tax structures which already exist.
Another “that being said”…
There is absolutely ZERO JUSTIFICATION for any form of “cannabis-specific” taxes. This is where the waters get muddy.
We already know that whenever a government creats a tax, it ALWAYS increases and becomes more and more of a burdon on the people who consume whatever product the tax is applied to. Gas, alcohol and tobacco are three of the most obvious examples of oppressive overtaxation. We can NOT allow this to happen any more, and we specifically can NOT allow this to happen with the cannabis/hemp market!
We need to realize that the current cannabis market as a whole is predominantly underground, and therefore, ENTIRELY UNTAXED. Even a single penny in sales tax would be a positive income result…and without a single new word in tax codes added, removed or changed. It’s already in place at both the state/province and federal level. No sense messing with something that works already and creating more GOVERNMENT WASTE if we can avoid it…and we CAN avoid it!
Repealing cannabis/hemp prohibition will bring the vast majority of the current “underground cannabis economy” above board, and there will be ubusinesses springing up to take advantage of the “new market potential.” Business income is already taxable.
They’ll need furniture, fixtures, equipment, vehicles, rental properties, and EMPLOYEES in order to operate. All of those things are already taxable. Again, no “new taxes” required.
The employees will likely first pay down their credit cards, but eventually, they’ll start buying things…houses, cars, home improvements, car repairs, new tires, food, a new TV, et cetera. Guess what I’m going to say next? That’s right…ALL taxable within existing tax codes! And again, TONS of “new tax revenue” without doing ANYTHING to earn it!
Isn’t that the real position of government these days? Doing nothing of benefit (in this case, nothing at all!) and charging us for it?
Oh yeah…and there’s that “tiny matter” of saving a few billion every year in wasted poice time, wasted prison costs, wasted lawyer’s time, wasted court hours, etc…so even if cannabis/hemp prohibition were repealed TODAY, the savings in WASTED MONEY ALONE completely justify ending prohibition! All of the rest…that’s nothing more than gravy, really.
Now we KNOW that our governments are simply not capable of doing anything to benefit the people these days…that ship has long since sailed, so it’s going to be up to ALL OF US to get those changes started. It is up to THE PEOPLE to demand that their elected EMPLOYEES actually listen to what we say, and stop all the idiocy once and for all. It’s time that this second era of prohibition was relegated to the scrap heap of history, where it belonged after we all learned that it simply didn’t work the first tie it failed, with alcohol prohibition.
It’s time to Overgrow The World! <=- GOOGLE IT!
[Editor’s note: You’re way too Utopian to be credible in the arenas of public legislation and litigation. Cannabis, unlike tomatoes, is a mildly psychoactive drug. Cannabis consumers will never see cannabis legalized unless there are reasonable controls and taxation. Otherwise, those that are holding out for some kind of ‘pot utopia’ are just delaying reforms as much a those who lobby to maintain the status quo against reforming the laws. Reformers can’t allow the ‘perfect’ to be the enemy of the good.]
Almost forgot…they CAN use the “alcohol model” to an extent:
1) Keep it in the hands of those who have reached the age of majority, and out of our schoolyards.
2) Rrsponsible cannabis users, should not be unduly harassed. (Note: Responsible alcohol users are being pressed harder and harder every year, so we REALLY need to pay close attention to this!)
3) If you gow your own at home, you should be as free to give it away, trade it for something else, or sell it if you so desire, just like homemade beer or wine.
4) There should be no limit on the amount of homegrown cannabis that you can grow or store for your own use, on your own property. (You never know when you might need a pound to extract a cure for cacer these days, do you? Might be a good idea to stock up!)
5) There should be no limit to how much you can transport from place to place, provided the quantities involved are not commercial in nature. (i.e.: if you’re moving a truckload of homemade wine, it’s just as suspect as a truckload of homegrown cannabis…simple logic applies.)
Other than that, basic sales taxes can be used to fund cannabis-specific medical research, treatment programs for the estimated 1.3% of people who may develop an abuse problem, and we can save a few billion in health care costs on top of it all.
Then again, unlike our wise and learned politicians…perhaps I haven’t really give it enough thought? d;o)
[Editor’s note: Indeed. Reasonable regulations! Just like with alcohol…including the ability for consumers to certainly cultivate their own cannabis.]
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.
Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats.
H. L. Mencken
Have they not noticed that they the non-users are paying to keep users in jail, and then as their criminal record will ruin their future employment prospects, they will subsidise us for the rest of our lives.
Legalise and tax is the only logical option.
1. It takes the criminals out of the supply chain and stop our youth thinking they’re gangsters because they sell bags of weed to their freinds.
2. It would raise a huge amount of tax revenue to pay for the mess the banks have left us with.
3. It would create 1000s of much needed jobs from growing thru distribution to point of sale.
4. Tourist bucks, nobody goes to Holland for the scenery, you’ve seen one windmill you’ve seen them all, people travel from all over the world to smoke in coffeeshops without fear of arrest.
Politicians need to get their heads out of the sand and realise legalisation is what most people both users and non users alike want, the war on drugs has been criminally expensive and cost the lives of thosands.
I hope for more people to come out and support this all across the nation. i’m currently working on getting a video presentation together and it is going to show the stats of tobacco companies, alcohol companies, their profits that they make for killing over a million people a year. Also, the % rates of getting away with murder in cities compared to the % rates of being cought with marijuana. Then, a segment of showing how marijuana can help reduce the air pollution, save lives, create hundreds of thounds of jobs, and save the government tens of billions of dollars. And yet, the government is about to shut down. Am I wrong? Or, is the Government wrong? you can decid for yourself. But first, I need to get working on it. Peace not War
Way to go Seatle. How pathetic it must have been for him to go home and plea against our free press to state the common sense approach to cannibis prohib. I almost feel sorry for the deranged. Don’t know his character but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him resign.
Pot smokers in WA should/have an OBLIGATION TO show up en masse and cause a HUGE DEMONSTRATION.
YELL AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS!!!!
wE’RE SICK AND TIRED OF THIS UNJUST LAW AND WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANY MORE!!!!
All hail Gil the pill pusher! This ain’t Libya, pal!
Anybody aware of KOPBUSTERS?
neither was I until I saw this. THIS SHOULD BE FRONT PAGE NEWS!

“NORML Has long argued that pot prohibition can not withstand careful and consistent scrutiny from the mainstream media. The Drug Czar knows this to be true better than anyone; hence the White House’s need to try and squelch any media-led ‘legitimate debate.” Freedom and liberty mean nothing to this guy. He is not for American just for the ever expanding pocket that collect our money for their enjoyment. He is unAmerican, and will committ treason against the people and call it good for America? Who is he kidding? It is the Government that has always lacked evidence for their stand on cannabis and they know it. It reminds of when the government argued that blacks were not as equal as whites, same dam bullshit, we are not a nations of laws, we are a nation of bullies.
Sign the dam petition and lets shove it in his face. This is what the people will is and that how we roll.
NOW STAND THE F### UP PEOPLE! They are not interested in justice, truth or us.

i wish i remembered the persons name and exact quote but the jist was it’s hard to change someones minds when there job depends on them not understanding.so our drug czar will never say otherwise.yet its funny the government has the patent for medical maryjane.they get it they just can’t admit they have been wrong.plus stick tax and regulate up your well you get it,how about DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS IN A PERSONS GARDEN,why should they make money off us,just make it legal!!!
I never met a Czar I liked – and this one is no different than the others – especially one who enforces an unjust law. The Seattle police chiefs, before him and after him, are in favor of med-cann. We know that the Czar is mandated to oppose “any attempt” to legalize cannabis – but – this guy is a [use your own word to describe a mindless puppet]. It’s got be the way of things in D.C. Kirlikowske and Leonart in 2012 for – dog catcher. No! the dogs sure won’t like him either. Wait a minute – what if we just didn’t recognize him or his position. What if we treated him like he didn’t exist – indifference! – much like he treats us.
Bring it on!!! It’s only a matter of time guys, that’s ok because in the meantime it’s not like we don’t light up anyway 😉
P.S. to 45
Did you ever have someone tell you that they didn’t want to see your face, or hear your voice – ever again – ever. Why don’t you just leave – nobody likes you anyway. Are you listening Gil and Michele. You’re already are a non-entity. Don’t you want to save what little face you have left – or – don’t you feel that you have a face anymore?
I have heard enough debate, that effort has taken place.
The Fed must back off and leave the regulation to the states as in article 10. The overall policy should be ‘no policy’.
If one state wants to oulaw pot, then they can do it.
We must reclaim our neighbors as well.. Mexico and Canada are suffering because of this.
PEOPLE !!!! were talking about the illegal law on pot it self, WE need to start there ,make the GOV. tell the truth about why its illegal, OTHER then a LIE, STAY focused on the point. Free all pot prisoners and let them work and TAX them not supporting them locked up in jail. attack the illegal law it self, stop saying make it legal!!!!!! its the other way around THEY need to come up with facts not LIES to make it illegal
Why am I the ONLY 1 SEEING THE lie, wake up ppl, NO law should BE made up on a LIE only THINK WAKE UP ALL THE TRUTH is out there has been all the TIME open your EYES
The bozotapo must have money on keeping MJ illegal. What else?
Cannabis prohibition is doomed to failure, as it is based on a series of total “un-realities”, which no amount of repression can make “real”. Cannabis is NOT physically addictive as it lacks a documented physical withdrawal syndrome, the so-called “gateway drug theory discredited as invalid, much touted by the DEA drug Marinol is not at all the same as medicinal cannabis, smoking Cannabis does not increase the risk of lung cancer, and cannabis use suppresses violent behavior. These are REALITIES! To further say say that Cannabis plant does not have medicinal properties is simply delusional and is a complete “break” with “reality”. If anti-Cannabis repression by the DEA and its allies were to be intensified, the rate of alcohol, cocaine, opiates, other hard drugs, alcohol, and dangerous prescription drugs would increase sharply. Neither the DEA, not its minions can make people perceive Cannabis as “unsafe”, where is in reality it is quite safe, much safer than alcohol and other alternatives. With the rise of the use of alcohol/hard drugs, the amount of violence and mayhem in this society will also rise, something that every mother and wife should consider. In these hard economic times our so-called “representatives” do not even dare talking about cutting the bloated DEA budget, especially its so-called “marijuana” enforcement, while they are willing to discuss cutting everything else. This is because the DEA and its minions are very good with attaching labels, and no one wants to risk being “labeled” as “soft on drugs”! The employment drug tests have a potential of “screening out” “Picassos”, and Lady GaGa’s, and Willie Nelsons, but letting people like Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson slip through (if the employers are “lucky”). And to say that Cannabis Plant does not have medicinal properties is simply delusional! Cannabis prohibition, as based on total scientific and philosophical “un-realities” can never succeed in the long run, it has a potential to do a great deal of damage to society, to exacerbate the Nation’s hard drug, alcohol and violence problems, and it should be abolished ASAP!
We need to organise global protest, non violent civil disobedience, every city has a park somewhere, how about we have a global smoking day when we all go to our local park and have smoke, if we can get enough people to come out, they can’t ignore us.
I for one am sick of being branded a criminal because I like to unwind of an evening with a spliff or two.
I’m sick of taking my life in my hands going to the rough end of town to score an under weight bag of badly produced crap from some non tax paying scumbag.
I suggest we all go out and protest in our city and town parks on Sunday May 1st as it’s a holiday in many countries.
For my own city, Nottingham, UK. Wollaton park could be a good venue, easily accessable and plenty of space.
Please forward to your friends on face book/twitter etc. if you agree, lets see if the internet can do for us what it has for our friends fighting for freedom in North africa at the moment.
I believe Mr Gil was the one that was on the boat for lowest priority (Cannabis) why all of a sudden change Mr.Gil? i could sure help u pull ur head outta ur ass if u’d like
The DEA must believe they are right keeping marijuana illegal. So why are they afraid of a debate? And why are they so worried about what the Times has to say? Maybe because America is starting to see through all their lies they have been telling for the past 70 years.
Mr Kerlikowske I think can expect an interesting welcome to Seattle. If the DEA thinks they are going to pull this end around and squeeze us with one hand and stroke pharma with the other they are very wrong.Like I said once it is only fitting it start in Washington. After all the man was a hemp farmer. The state should lead it’s re-legalization.
I’m tired of high percentage of people in America who are simply ignorant. They don’t care enough to research Marijuana and form their own opinions. Instead they believe what the government wants them to believe because simply believing takes much less effort than researching the topic for yourself and finding the REAL facts. How can they not see what the government is really doing?? ISN’T IT OBVIOUS THAT IF MARIJUANA WAS LEGALIZED, PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES WOULD LOSE MUCH OF THEIR MONEY? THE GOVERNMENT WOULDN’T LET THAT HAPPEN! People would be taking one drug: Marijuana, Instead of the 50 (incredibly over priced) pills they are currently on! And the fucking pills have 500000 side effects anyways!!
Anyone with some common sense, logic, and an open mind wouldn’t throw such a useful plant down the drain.
GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT IGNORANT ANTI-CANNABIS AMERICANS AND HAVE THE DESIRE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS PLANT!!
I’m sure many of us know that this debate has already been going on in numerous blogs and the side for legalizing pot has been winning for years! Out Govt is just being incredibly stubborn on this for some reason… Most of us probably know what that reason is too; I don’t need to say it…

wow to be honest i smiled when i read this do you realise how close we seem to legalization ? the public is finally waking up to see the truth how safe marijuana really is i mean its to the point anymore smokign pot s more acceptable than smokign a cigarette (theres almost illgal to have unless its in your home and now the shoe is on the other foot cigarette smokers are the one getting descriminated against) i myself dont smoke cigarettes but i do smoke the earth grown plant that brings peace and love (but its still beyond me as to why jamacia one of the biggest pot countries also has the highest murder rate in the world)
Jason had an amazing idea. They should broadcast the meeting, if the government wants to have it should not be behind closed doors. Its the press for gods sake, this is not China.
the reason they don’t make alcohol illegal is because it is a huge giant money maker for lawyers, judges, etc. it is obvious they do not care about the human condition, it’s screw us, and bit dollars for them. tax it my arse, i can grow my own just like any other houeplant! sell me the seeds, tax those, and then leave me alone. Like Montel Williams I have chronic pain, and this is A LOT better for me and my pain than addictive big pharma co oxycodone/oxycotin. Legalize personal growth, not to be sold at Wal-Mart so it’s too expensive and taxed, and in your grocery cart for the world to see and know. heck with that! I wanna grow my own!
Other than speculation,I have seen nothing to indicate Gil is coming to town as the Sheriff A good P.R. move would be to show up as the Parson. He could smile, spew some 90’s anti-pot rhetoric to the editorial staff, tell the chief executive he needs to modify the paper’s editorial stance or various Federal snoops might take notice(like the I.R.S.).He waves, flies home, point made.
Freedom of speech being raped by the Whitehouse!
The country as a whole tends to be moderate yet federal and state governments are trending ultra conservative. If we’re getting this much flak from a liberal white house just wait until we get a tea party ultra conservative backed administration. I still see the next Prop 19 in California or something in Washington state passing but it’s going to be a war against the fed. Just like Obama,if your a pro pot conservative be careful for what you wish for!
Remember how everyone said Gil was a step in the right direction? I suppose he is, if only for the fact that they’ve taken out anyone with any real zealotry and replaced them with somebody who KNOWS the laws are crooked and is only politicking for his own personal ambitions at this point (namely to keep his position).
Gil is not a true drug warrior. He’s the closest thing to a “lame duck” we’ve ever had– and exactly the kind of Czar who will be in place when this phony war finally ends.
In the end, it is alwaya about the money.
A lot of money is being made from keeping cannabis illegal. Start with salaries paid to people like Kerlikowske, police officers, and prison guards. Then we move on to the Big 3-the Alcohol, Tobacco and Pharmaceutical industries. God forbid, imagine what could happen to their billion dollar profits if free American citizens had legal access to a substance that has medicinal and recreational properties and that was demonstrably less harmful than alcohol, tobacco and many prescription drugs. And last but not least are the criminal gangs, thugs and corrupt politicians who are reaping the enourmous profits from the government sponsored black market.
Kerlikowkse and people like him are nothing more than tools of those who profit from prohibition. These people are anathema to the fundamental American concepts of personal freedom and liberty. Cannabis prohibition is a national disgrace, and it is only a matter of time before the American people are freed from its yoke of oppression.
Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
Amazing Grace.
That’s great! All as we need is one state to lead the way on legalization, and others will follow. I hope it will be you Washington! Oh yeah, Our hike around the base of Mt. Saint Helens in 2010 was great! Plan a vacation to Washington State…

Holy Smokes. Seattle, Washington, sensible policy reform and debate coming to the people. I hope the Seattle Times reports with full disclosure the conversation and shakedown that will be delivered by the heavy handed tactics of the Drug Czar. Let freedom of speech ring without the interference of a over-reaching government. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I think I will go get happy.

my god, i cant wait for this one…we have waited for a break all these years.how i crave to be there when this meeting occurs.. what would it take for wastington to quiet about the remedy. id say…not a damn thing. heh. its gonna open a big ole can of woop-ass on our governments credibility because nothing gil can say will sway the truth of the remedy.more then ever, non users are tired of the wrong. i figured id be dead before our freedom would be restored. im damn sure hopin im wrong…peace to you all….
They’re running scared now fellas! Lets get em!
Maybe Gil thinks that what he did worked in California, and it will work again in Washington state. If he can divide the cannabis reformers, divide et impera (divide & conquer) will work again.
Democratic reforms in North Africa and the Middle East ought to be orchestrated to lead to a regulated cannabis market in the region for when the U.S. does legalize and control the world cannabis market stock exchange by having cannabis traded in U.S. dollars.
Gil cares only about himself. He’s a carpetbagger now. He’ll probably retire somewhere in the Sunshine Belt or Hawaii or something. I don’t believe for a second that he’ll ever settle down in Washington state. After wearing out his welcome back by doing the bidding of prohibitionists in D.C. he’ll have lost all credibility anyway.
Did the editorial board sign a non disclosure agreement with Gil, or can they tell us what he wants?

Hold the phone a minute and let the smoke clear the air. Now realize its 2011, how close to campaigning are we? of course Obama is going to start changing his voice from “I don’t know what this says about our online audience” to “an entirely legitimate topic for debate.” This jerk blindsided the voting public once, lts not forget his all smoke and mirrors and no real helpful action!
His agenda has nothing to do with ours ignore the snake and keep our efforts and focus on getting him out. You can bank if Obama does open the doors to legalization it will come weighted in favor of big corporate and do all it can to keep mom n pop in the dark.
What sort of threats do you think the Czar is packing to bring to The Seattle Times form the Obama administration.Free speech is still a constitutional freedom isn’t it.I mean we are trying to tell the Arab world Democracy is something to die for,yet here we are in America and free speech is still frowned upon.I think it’s High time the Government realized that as much as they dislike what the American people have to say on Legalization, the feeling is more than mutual.
This attitude or double talk on this issue could very well cost him the 2012 election.we’re watching and listening Mr President. You had better have a better understanding of how we can sway voters now that we have the floor so to speak. You had better understnd it or it will be the end of your presidency. The republicans had better get on board too. Wait and see what happens if you dont..

Somehow, I doubt that Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske would even show up in Seattle to talk with the Times editorial board, at least not while being videotaped or live-streamed. Instead, no doubt, a sternly worded letter will be sent in his stead.
That would be the only way the Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske and the Obama regime could not be shown to be raving mad idiots — by not showing up. How much bluster and stamina would one have to have to credibly present a totally indefensible government policy?
Obama’s comment that an honest debate Should be held regarding marijuana’s current illicit status doesn’t mean that there Will be such a debate. It’s a talking point, nothing more. IIRC, Obama also promised much better “transparency in government” when he was campaigning, and now look at how his regime wants to prosecute WikiLeaks and Julian Assange.
Someone once told me that you need to whack a mule or a donkey over the head with a 2×4 to get it’s attention. Today’s Democratic Party needs a virtual 2×4 over the head regarding cannabis. The Obama regime can either pay attention to the stirrings in public and on the Internet now regarding re-legalizing cannabis, or experience an even larger political loss at the polls than the Democrats experienced in 2010.
To further say that Cannabis plant does not have medicinal properties is simply delusional and is a complete “break” with “reality”. Cannabis prohibition, as based on glaring scientific and philosophical “un-realities” and can never succeed in the long run!
Get UP, Get OUT, Stand up WE will OVERPOWER and WE will WIN!!!! ;} Obama, it’s time YOU get a back bone and shand up for what YOU say!!! ;{

Put that in your bowl and smoke it, Gil!
dont give in seattle
Wasnt Gil the chief of Police in Seattle before taking the drug Czar job? So he knows the truth and has seen decriminalization work right? Then its simply true that our government is in bed with the Duponts and Big Pharma till the end. Wouldnt the have done better if after stepping into the Drug Czar office he just announced the end of this failed policy? If anything Seattle show him what he has forgotten about, and how well it worked while he was here. Just maybe he may grow a pair and return to DC enlightened, OK thats not going to happen, but it should! You know this think this drug war or prohibition we all are awaiting the day it blows up and crashes down, woot, but I think its going to fade away, secretly in the night and one day we will wake an pot will be legal. Its seems to be going that way anyhow.

Of course our purpose, a Genesist’s objective, is the protection of Religious Freedom.
Our thugs here are much the same as your thugs there. “A thug is a thug” – anywhere on earth. You are absolutely right “Earl” – we need to stand up in unity and show our brethren’s number in defense of Religious Freedom [Individual Freedom].
It only takes one messenger to deliver “the message of the many” – the many Genesist brethren in the 3141 Genesist Colonies in America, the Nottingham, UK Colony, and Genesist Colonies around the world. We don’t need to be “mob-handed” – but – like my godfather said – “We can make them an offer they can’t refuse.” Then too, we know the value of sit-ins – but – only if they don’t get the message.

With Facebook and other social media networks a newspaper is the least of the czar’s(lol supreme ruler of drugs) problems, it’s just more time and recognized effort to control the uncontrollable. “Mr. President! Mr. President! They’re talking about how marijuana should be legal!” Boo-hoo. It’s been debated for years, now that whole poor newspaper staff has to be harped at about censoring what they’re legally allowed to express (which were all valid points). What about TMZ or MTV? Full of the extraordinary and the elite of society setting a wonderful example for future generations right? When you start seeing ‘beer pong’ type children’s game you know that marketing has gone astray. ‘You’ve got a hangnail? WE’VE got a prescription for that!’ But don’t smoke weed cause it’s what the bad people do.. Yeah, well what about getting severely injured or have a diagnosis that cannabis use benefits or even trying it for that matter? Consider those two things then we can start having intelligent not ignorant opposition. If an ill person smoking some marijuana is ‘bad’ then YOU being able to have the power to limit what a human being is allowed to use for themselves makes YOU evil (not just for cannabis). With the turbulence in Egypt sourcing out to other countries it’s only a matter of time before we start to see protest for all sorts of reform, including cannabis. We are people and with that comes individuality and freedom to do what we please. Time and again the human being will always do what it pleases, even with rules and regulations. Gil, expect more opposition and at the end of the day even if you think you’ve won. It’s just a battle not the war.
Basically what should be is the next marijuana reform comes up for debate, it should be President Obama joking about him and Bidden re-rolling a bad joint.
-Yours Humbly, Ian
Demand reduction, means that if you are afraid to go pee-pee Michelle Obama will come and hold your hand.
Decriminalization, means that maybe if you leave some seeds under your pillow tonight the 420 fairy will come and there will be a nice fat bag of buds for you when you wake up.
Harm reduction? legalize marijuana!
Jesus said to do unto others as we would have them to do unto us. Hopefully Mr. Kerlikowske will give that some thought, now that he’s in a position to help put an end to the jailing of Americans for something as mild as marijuana. None of us would want our child thrown in jail with the sexual predators for using a little marijuana. None of us would want to see our parent’s home confiscated and sold by the police for growing a couple of marijuana plants to ease the aches and pains of growing older. It’s time to stop putting our own families in jail. It’s time to let ordinary Americans grow a little marijuana in their own back yards, and it’s nice to see our culture coming to terms with this in a more wholesome fashion. This will go a long way toward putting the criminal drug gangs out of business for good!
I used it for fun and then a broken neck at 18. Made it my medical treatment. Doctors did nothing, I was a Veteran 40 years later , I’m dieing. The medical does make make me happy and not depressed. Also takes away pain that morphine doesen’t, the morhpine has stoped me from breathing 2 times and i died last time 65 days in the hospital.
Get over it President Nixon was my Comander and Chief. A great guy but wrong on marijuana. Its time to try something else.Brother Barry be the real deal the voters knew you were and are. And i would have a beer with you, if invited. Rick
You know it is sad, I can remember when Gil was first hired it was seen as a positive by those in the cannabis reform movement
The situation with Gil reminds with the Jimmy Carter era and his guy Peter Bourne
It was a promising time Jimmy Carter even spoke before Congress in 1977 about changing the penalty for cannabis
In the modern era, during the 2008 campaign Barack Obama stood before a crowd in Iowa and informed them doctors should be able to prescribe cannabis
Yet now WE are informed Barack and Gil dont even believe in medical cannabis

The Constitution says “PURSUIT” of happiness. It doesn’t “GUARANTEE” happiness. That’s entirely up to us. But – it does “GUARANTEE” the “PURSUIT” – “UNOBSTRUCTED.”
Geneists declare that the religious liberty guaranteed us in the Constitution, as an unalienable right, endowed by our creator, supersedes all other authentic reasons for the abolishment of our sacrament’s prohibition. Therefore – we in the name, will, and authority of the good and free people of the Genesist Faith, solemnly publish and declare that our 3141 united Genesist Colonies are, and of right, ought to be recalcitrant to government’s discriminate acts against our Faith, Holy Sacrament, and our Constitution.

Of course the Czar is against legalization. He is prohibited (there’s that word fascists love so much) by law to support legalization…look at his job description online! What we need is a Tahrir square. It’s amazing that hundreds, maybe by this time thousands are harmed by the Ghaddaffi, the Hague issues a statement that the leader will be held responsible for attacking his own people. WHERE IS THE HAGUE when the US GOV attacks its own people to the tune of one arrest every 37 seconds, over 20 million arrested since 1965??? It is a human rights violation unprecedented in the history of the world. We attack China for jailing thousands of dissidents yet the US imprisons 10% of it’s population, many for their pursuit of happiness which should be an inalienable right (the endo-cannabinoid system produces anandamide which gives us happiness :p) The attack on peaceful hemp enthusiasts continues to be A KINDER, GENTLER HOLOCAUST!!!! Let’s dedicate 4/20/11 to be America’s Tahrir Square where we as a people throw off the chains of this fascist govenrmental entity. Remember, DEATH begins with DEA!!!!
for a country that has no problem electing a drunk driver coke head to the presidency to exhort locking up people for pot is hypocrisy at its worst… tens of thousands of people die every year because of arrogant drunk drivers like bush. way more than terrorists or 911… yet drunk driving is a misdemeanor and a few ounces of pot is a felony… when I asked my state senator to address this issues\ she quipped :” well it’s legal”. well duh…it’s your job as a legislature to change laws that are unjust or unfair. I would support making drunk driving a felony because I believe it would save thousand of lives… many drink and drive knowing if they get caught it’s a slap on the wrist. if they really thought they’d go to jail I think many would refrain. Bush might have refrained if he really thought he’d get his arrogant ass locked up.
Seattle Times Cannabis Reform Protests send US Drug Czar down the rabbit hole!!!
4 March, 2011, Seattle, WA
US Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowske sneaks around to the back door, flees from a couple of protesters after emptying his empty bag of old rhetoric on the news and meeting with Times Editors all morning!!!!!!http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/03/05/the-drug-czar-comes-to-town-and-nothing-much-happens&cb=ee11d8f3af3fe94e8a04b72cc19daed3&layoutId=PostComment&view=comments#comment-7046851
After seeing the drug Czar’s bizarre bipolar behavior Friday, its clear that the Feds Kool-Aid has run out! A Defeated man, looking more like a paranoid drug dealer than the Nations top Drug Cop, Gil exited out of an auxillary entrance after trying to put a juke move on protesters altogether. It was more embarrassing than frustrating as a peaceful OIF Veteran protester. I has trained never to never surrender, and after Gil’s acquiescent talks with The Seattle Times (The whole hubub and the “coincidence” that really riled people up in the first place) he was in full retreat mode during a perceived show of force; see The Stranger @http://www.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2011/02/25/white-house-requested-meeting-with-seattle-times-editorial-board-to-bully-against-pro-pot-articles
In summation, I’ll quote what Brendan Kiley of The Seattle Times said after Friday’s activities.”The White House’s drug czar is making the case in such an empty and specious way, he might as well be arguing for legalization.”

Kiro 7’s Online Post shows a whopping 86% chunk of the public for legalizing cannabis. Yup! 86% – that’s the number I had in my scope. Don’t forget to discount the 10% trash vote. 86 million is also “the number of X’ers [born between 1960 – 1980] there are in this society. In fact, they are the largest voting block in the U.S. X’ers need to vote. 86 is also an eviction notice. There ya go! a T-shirt with a big 86 on it. 86 the prohibitionists.
clearly any president is converted into the main when he raises his hand and says I DO
the demand for cannibis is under reported and the lack of negative consequences for the public clearly predicts good times and tax revenue for the states and the country.
MADD and blood alcohol limits, DWI, and mny more show alcohol in a much worse position from alcoholism to DWIs!
Yet there is no similar news about cannabis! in fact, the lack of such news should be a strong signal to our Government.
I have a mm cert and I grow my own.. i also buy sometimes from a local collective. i am also amazed by the various reasons given to get a MM certificate.
California could receive millions in tax revenue from cannabis.
Washington could too.
Keep the faith!

Once upon a time in America – I raised my right hand and swore and oath of allegiance to protect my Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. I’m still alive – and – I still honor that oath – as much today as I did then. My right hand has not withered on the arm that I raised. I wonder – “Did anyone in Washington take the same oath?” It sure doesn’t seem like it! Honor is a gift one gives one’s self. My beloved country needs patriots – not paid off politicians. God Bless America.

Yes man, you are absolutely right in your thinking…
The Non-Tax paying SCUMBAGS that are selling the crap to us is really the not so distant kin of the sheriff, police and other Government Scumbags who are running the show. If you go figure…about 99.9% of those Scumbags have never been busted and are probably being protected by the other Government Scumbags who are hoarding all the cash and victimizing us law abiding citizens of our rights and liberties.
