One of the internet’s largest cannabis communities, R/Trees, is closing in on 420,000 members. To celebrate, they graciously offered to run a fundraiser to benefit National NORML’s work towards legalizing marijuana across the United States.

Dude… this is awesome. I too am a proud Ent and member of /r/trees. While shit over there can get a bit juvenile, I am very glad to see that they are throwing some of their power (and sheer size in number) towards NORML. Thousands of cannabis consumers, most of which are capable of using pretty decent grammar. Can’t hurt.

@Growly Didge, as for the t-shirt, the /r/trees community refers to cannabis as “trees,” as they are both green, and they also sometimes refer to it as “pineapples” due to the similar shape of the top of a cannabis leaf and the top leafy part of a pineapple. That’s why there’s a tree and a pineapple on the shirt.

@Gweedo Saying r/trees is “a bit” juvenile is a massive understatement. It’s basically post after post about “420 hur hur I’m sooo stoned hur hur munchies hur hur.” That is the full extent of r/trees’ knowledge of cannabis. It’s a joke.

While I agree with you, their humor is juvenile, I still think it’s important to respect their support and their contributions to the cause. They represent our younger demographic, and we need to value them. For the sake of the future votes they will contribute and for their (hopefully) continues monetary support.
Wouldn’t consolidation of all of us strengthen our position? Is there somewhere all of us can begin to congregate? Be it here, Reddit, or the ASA website?
The issue with the internet is everyone is everywhere, whenever they want to be. In order to move forward on this front we need all interested parties to be seated in on arena.
Additionally, how many of you are at local meetings trying to assist those in your area to push this agenda forward? Get involved, get excited, and stay positive: We are on the cusp of ending mary-jane prohibition.
Keeping informed helps us all.
A friend was right. That site is useless. It is just another breeding ground for potheads. It is not meant for those who actually give two shits about altering the paradigm we live in. WTF was the NORML site thinking by promoting that site?
The bulk of the posts on that site revolve around “I got high while taking my girlfriend to dinner and…”. NORML do us all a favor and please don’t promote outlets that suggest we are one and the same.
Public perception makes the connection between those of us who are interested in changing US policy and the average stoner. We are not one in the same and furthermore idk that we even have the same goals.

Well, sure, if they want to contribute votes and/or monetary support, then by all means they should be allowed to do that. The more the merrier, in that regard. But as far as representing reform in any capacity other than that, well, I don’t think that’s a great idea. Frankly, scrolling through that sub-reddit is quite embarrassing. That community is certainly not what we should be pointing to as an example of what we are trying to achieve.
I never heard of r/trees and don’t know how juvenile they are or are not, but it does bring to mind my pleasant surprise when I first began visiting the NORML website. I found the website to intelligent, serious and very well done.
Even most of the public comments seem a cut above the vile, obnoxious stuff that pervades a lot of Internet communities.
Kudos to all of you and especially NORML.

We must not lose focus on people like the mayor of New York. He was on Letterman last night. He likes to use phrases like “drug dealers and substance abusers should not own guns.” He is implying that those people are dangerous. But he never mentions alcoholics should not own guns. But yet he wants to prohibit large sodas. hahahahaha these type of pro-being drunk around children, anti-marijuana smokers are the reason our country is is in chaos.

Suffice of to say that anti-prohibitionists attacking politicians who support cannabis law reform looks bizarre to ungrateful…if not politically immature. The reason why former Speaker Pelosi endorses legalization is because the political conversation to reform cannabis laws in America has moved from an immature to mature one. Reformers should comport themselves in the same manner, preferring the proverbial high road to petty political insults or questioning one’s motives.]

Pardon my ignorance, but what does a bunch of kiddies on r/trees posting about 420 and munchies have to do with Congress and/or political partisanship? The comments I (and others) posted here were simply questioning whether that community is a proper representative of reform and the changes we seek to make. If asked to point to an example of responsible, mature discussion on the current state of cannabis laws, can you honestly say that you would recommend r/trees? The most popular post at the moment is about a kid who got high and ate dog treats after he mistook them for chocolate. It’s post after post of the same type of thing.
To be fair, the majority of r/trees are kids, and most of us probably acted like that to some degree in our younger days of experimentation. Mature, responsible adults didn’t take us seriously, though, just like these kids shouldn’t be. We certainly shouldn’t be promoting that community in any way, shape or form. Like I said, they can vote all they want and contribute money to their hearts are content. It’s embarrassing for them to have a “voice” or be involved in any other capacity, though.
