CALL NOW: NORML Day of Action #JustSayNoToSessions

Senate lawmakers are only days away from deciding whether Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions will become the next Attorney General — the top law enforcement officer in the land.

Senator Sessions is a militant opponent of any efforts to reform marijuana policy who once notoriously remarked that the Ku Klux Klan “was okay until I found out they smoked pot.” He is a staunch proponent of the long-discredited ‘gateway theory,’ and has called on federal officials to return to the ‘Just Say No’ rhetoric of the 1980s. In fact, he was one of only 16 US Senators to receive a failing grade from NORML in our 2016 Congressional Report Card because of statements like these:

“We need grown-ups in charge in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized, it ought not to be minimized, that it’s in fact a very real danger.”

“[Marijuana] cannot be played with, it is not funny, it’s not something to laugh about, and trying to send that message with clarity, that good people don’t smoke marijuana.”

Senator Sessions’ views are out of step with mainstream America and they are in conflict with the laws of over half of the states. We must demand that Senators ask this nominee whether he intends to respect the will of the voters in these states, and whether he truly believes that no “good people” have ever smoked pot.

If confirmed by the US Senate, Sen. Sessions will possess the power to roll back decades of hard-fought gains. He will have the authority to challenge the medical marijuana programs that now operate in 29 states and the adult use legalization laws that have been approved in eight states.

Call your Congressional Switchboard and ask to be patched through to your home state Senators at (202) 224-3121 to tell them to have Sessions clarify his intentions or be defeated.

If you don’t know who your Senators are you can click HERE to find out.

Use this script:

“Hello, my name ______. I am a constituent and I am calling regarding the nomination of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. Senator Sessions views on marijuana are completely out of step with those of the majority of the American public. They also conflict with the stated views of President-Elect Trump, who said on the campaign trail that questions regarding marijuana policy are best left up to the states, not the federal government. For these reasons, I urge you to ask Sen. Sessions whether he intends to respect the will of the voters in the majority of US states that have enacted to pursue alternative marijuana policies. If his answers are unsatisfactory, I urge you to reject his nomination.”

After you call your Senators, tell your friends and family to do the same by sharing this on Facebook and Twitter.

  1. Hi my name is Acheron …I’m doing a research paper about an interest group and I decided to research yours. If you don’t mind I’d like to ask some questions about NORML.When you can, could you please email me at Acheron0405@gmail.com……thank you

  2. Thank you, NORML. It is always important to contact our senators, and spread the word that keeping legalization alive is really keeping the inevitable future, just as such. As I have previously said, Jeff Sessions is, potentially, legalization’s greatest threat right now. Legalization is in very serious trouble, we have Republican moralists back at the helm, telling us how to live our lives, worse, how we “should” live our lives. What freedoms we ought to enjoy. For all their talk about state’s rights, and liberty……this is good, NORML, thanks. Also….I really want to dispel any haters on here. This is the National Organization for Reform of Marijuana Laws. Please remember we are all agents of change here. All of us want to see more sensible marijuana policy in this country. All of us want to see that day, and to enjoy it. Senator Sessions should be heard TOMORROW. The only thing we need to be doing right now is standing in resistance. Legalization is inevitable, it is our FUTURE. So for progress to be made, we must stand tall, and stand strong. Legalization is the future, and they know they can never, never stop us.

  3. NORML, I have noticed that my very last, and particularly long, comment, has not posted. This is probably my most passionate comment yet, and I hope that it is postable. Always in thanks, Matt

  4. here is a response i got

    Dear Brian,

Thank you for contacting my office about the nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions to serve as the Attorney General. I appreciate hearing from you about his nomination.

As you know, the Senate must confirm certain Presidential nominees to the Executive Branch before they take office. This process is designed to provide checks and balances to the power of the President and ensure that each nominee is carefully reviewed.

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a confirmation hearing on Senator Sessions who will then need to be confirmed by the full Senate. While I am not a member of this committee, I take my responsibility to ensure that qualified and well-vetted individuals serve in the Executive Branch very seriously. Please be assured that I will hold Senator Sessions to the highest standard throughout the confirmation process.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any future concerns.

    Sincerely,

    Jeanne Shaheen
    United States Senator

  5. Ted Cruz says “mailbox full.” Left a message with Cornyn but Ive already received letters from him that show he’s deep in the pockets of asset forfeitures and the prison lobby.
    Everybody call anyway!
I even called Tom Ashbrook from On Point and got some airtime to tell everyone to call their Senators. Sessions is lying about his record on his SK Questionaire, trying to paint himself a champion of civil rights when his record shows the exact oppositte. He’ll revoke the Cole memo day one.
If “The KKK was alright until I found out they smoked marijuana” blocked him frim being a Federal Judge 3 decades ago ut damn well is enough reason to block him from USAG today.

  6. We had to leave a message for Cruz. Cornyn’s voice mail was full, so we sent an email to him.

  7. Thats “SJ Questionare” (Senate Judiciary… typo, sorry). Finally got a message through to Cruz but if we want to talk to staff members were going to be hitting redial all day. Its a busy day. Its not just NORML that doesnt need to see Sessions in USAG. Weve got the NAACP, ACLU, LGBT and whatever Q stands for. I think we’ll get a delay. We really need to press the SJ members from Arizona and Utah.

  8. The GREATEST threat to ALL of the progress we have made with legalization….is Jefferson Sessions. We MUST stand strong!

  9. hate to say this but people if you have Constitutional sheriffs in your county that even if they don’t support the legalization issue they may support the tenth amendment of states rights. Might be worth to getting to know them they are indebted to you not the Federal Govt. I remember people calling the sage brush sheriffs a bunch of ninny’s but now you may see what and why they are, were doing what they did, do.

  10. Like I said might find a friendly sheriff to our cause, and ask him to stick by you if the feds come looking to enforce unconstitutional law.

  11. Left a msg with Tom Tillis and well…he is on the Session train. He has to much bro love for Sessions. So don’t count on him any time soon. Shame…
