Unlike alcohol (which is readily available in a variety of potencies, including highly-potent formulations like grain alcohol and absinthe), THC is incapable of causing lethal overdose — regardless of its potency or the quantity consumed.
The new law opens the Texas Compassionate Use Program to include those suffering from chronic pain and other newly eligible conditions. It also expands the variety of cannabis formulations that patients possess and significantly increases the total number of state-licensed dispensaries that can operate in the state.
As required by separate legislation signed by the Governor earlier this year, all pardoned cannabis possession offenses will be removed from public view by January 31, 2026.

By taking cannabis products off street corners and placing them behind the counter, lawmakers are providing cannabis consumers with safer experiences and greatly reducing their risk of being inadvertently exposed to contaminated products.
