By taking cannabis products off street corners and placing them behind the counter, lawmakers are providing cannabis consumers with safer experiences and greatly reducing their risk of being inadvertently exposed to contaminated products.

“Once again, the lesson is clear: Legalizing and regulating marijuana markets is preferable to prohibiting them. Placing marijuana products behind the counter keeps cannabis out of the hands of young people and it reduces the public’s appetite for these unregulated novel intoxicants.”
“These findings highlight the need for proper regulatory oversight of cannabinoid-containing products to ensure quality assurance and deter misleading or unfounded health claims in product marketing,” the study’s authors concluded.
“The limited popularity of these products is a predictable outgrowth of criminal marijuana prohibition. As one would expect, there exists far less demand for these unregulated products in an environment where whole-plant cannabis legally regulated and available.”
“Only 18.4 percent [of the evaluated products] probably used natural hemp-derived delta-9 THC,” the study’s authors concluded.
“These products are unregulated and untested, readily available on the internet and unlicensed sources, and pose significant threat to public health and safety.”
