Des Moines, IA: Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed legislation (House File 990) into law expanding the number of dispensaries licensed to operate in the state.
The new law doubles the total number of available “cannabidiol dispensaries” from five to ten. The new law also provides a pathway for out-of-state residents to access state-authorized products containing CBD and/or THC.
Under the state’s limited medical cannabis access program, which became operational in 2018, qualifying patients are eligible to purchase no more than 4.5 grams of THC every 90 days from state-licensed dispensaries. (After participating in the program, patients are also eligible for a waiver to the 4.5g THC per 90-day purchase limit.) Patients are not permitted to access botanical cannabis.
Nearly 20,000 Iowans are registered to access state-approved extract products. State regulators initially recommended expanding the program in 2023 to include additional dispensaries.
