Clinical Trial: CBD-Dominant Extracts Reduce Pain From Burning Mouth Syndrome

Curitiba, Brazil: The administration of CBD-dominant cannabis extracts significantly reduces pain in patients suffering from oral dysesthesia (a chronic painful burning sensation in the mouth absent any identifiable cause), according to randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial data published in the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology

Brazilian researchers assessed the efficacy of plant-derived oral CBD extracts versus a placebo in 26 patients diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Patients’ pain and health-related quality of life were assessed at baseline and multiple times throughout the trial. Participants consumed between 10 mg and 50 mg of CBD daily or a placebo.

Consistent with prior studies, use of the cannabis-based intervention was associated with reduced pain and improved quality of life. No adverse effects were reported during the study.

“This randomized, placebo-controlled study demonstrated that treatment with full-spectrum cannabidiol oil was associated with significant and progressive reductions in both pain intensity and pain impact in patients with BMS. Improvements became evident from the third assessment onward and were accompanied by a significant improvement in oral health–related quality of life, with no adverse events observed,” the study’s authors concluded. 

“These findings suggest that cannabidiol may represent a promising therapeutic option for patients with refractory burning mouth syndrome. Larger, double-blind trials with longer follow-up are needed to confirm efficacy, characterize long-term safety, and better define its role in clinical practice.”

Burning mouth syndrome is estimated to impact about two percent of the population. The condition is poorly managed by traditional prescription medications.
