Yet Another Study Reports That Pot May Halt MRSA

Just days after the New York Times, Scientific American, and other MSM outlets finally got wind that cannabis’ germ-fighting properties can halt the spread of MRSA and other multi-drug resistant pathogens, along comes a second just-released study identifying several new non-cannabinoid compounds in the plant which possess anti-bacterial properties.
Investigators at the University of Mississippi report the discovery of eleven new non-cannabinoid constituents in cannabis, several of which possess “anti-microbial” (think MRSA), “anti-malarial,” and “anti-leishmanial” (a common skin parasite) activity. Scientists also reported that several of the compounds also possessed anti-inflammatory properties and acted as potent anti-oxidants.
(The US government, Depart of Health and Human Services actually holds a patent on the use of certain cannabinoids as anti-oxidants and neuroprotectants, which you can read here.)
In other words, when we speak about the healing powers of the cannabis plant, we really mean the entire cannabis plant. We’re not talking about isolating particular cannabinoids, and we’re most certainly not suggesting patients be forced to consume an oral synthetic version of a single compound a la Marinol.
Therapeutic cannabis means just that — the therapeutic prowess of the whole plant. We should not advocate for, or accept, anything less.

  1. Well now, we have scraped the bottom of the ocean, we have searched the dark depths of the jungles, and pretty much looked under rocks, trying to find a new drug to treat the diseases that have plagued mankind, and it was under our nose all the time!
If it weren’t for all the unnecessary suffering, it would be funny.
Don’t say “no to drugs” till you try them!!!

  2. It’s as if we are collectively standing on the beach arguing with people that claim there’s no sand present.
How much freakin evidence do we need?

  3. So, the federal government says there is no use for cannabis, but the federal government holds a patent on the therapeutic use of it? The government is contradicting itself. Government is incompetent.
That is why you do not vote for big government, be it Bush, McCain, or Obama. Vote for the libertarian party. They stand for personal freedom and liberties no matter what.

  4. Well it looks like the media is not completely bought out here! It is good that two major publications did cover this.
Maybe the reason I never get bacterial infections anymore is pot?
    Just a thought.

  5. If marijuana was legal drug companies would lose billions of dollars, that’s the only reason I can come up with that explains why pot is still illegal.
They should just legalize it, perscribe it and sell it in stores, like medication. I’m pretty sure they could find a way to get some revenue in their pockets, people do pay for convienience. Whoever would lose out on pot being legal might fear that people would just grow it and not pay for it.
But just because I can bake my own bread doesn’t mean I wouldn’t go buy a loaf in the store instead.

  6. ITS SAD BECAUSE OF HOW HIPPOCRITICAL THE SYSTEM IS. YOU CAN ONLY USE THEIR DRUGS. WHY CANT YOU GROW YOUR OWN MEDICINE? TAXES. IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO $$$. AS LONG AS THEY DONT GET A PIECE ITS NOT GOOD FOR US OR SO THEY SAY….

  7. Please people lets stop this madness! 100 years from now people are going to look back at prohibition and scratch their heads and wonder just WTF people were thinking. The more you step back and try to view the situation from a different perspective the crazier it all looks. It just amazes me that we learned that alcohol prohibition didnt work years ago, but yet we are still banging our heads against the wall trying to enforce oppressive, stupid laws anyway. WAKE UP SHEEPLE!

  8. Cannbis meets the criteria for banning a drug-
    1) It makes you feel good
    2) It is extremely cheap to produce
    3) No rich fat-cat owns the right to it
    Fails all three items…

  9. Cannabis is a miracle–one day they will see—
We need to focus on the lobbyists who “convince” our elected officials to keep up the sham–the ones making money-the private prison lobby–as long as they are making money for the “convincing” we will have to keep fighting

  10. This doesn’t surprise me and as much as I love the herb, ganja isn’t the only plant that will fight MRSA. I’ve cured an infection with Tea Tree Oil. Big Pharma doesn’t like non-patentable cures and they’ll fight this one tooth and nail. The crazy thing is the cannabis cure is topical, rubbed on the skin, so it doesn’t get you high. So what’s the deal?

  11. It’s actually a wonder drug! And ALL NATURAL!
From PMS and all it’s symptoms, arthritis, severe migraine headaches, anxiety, womans viagra! yes! WOMANS VIAGRA!! When will the government get with it?
So tax it, the side effects are minimal when used correctly. And NO, it does not make you go crazy & kill people. If anything it’s the opposite.

  12. the guy complains about 7 year old son – faced with legal – cig. and booze – both far worst for you then pot. Govn’t needs revenue and the dealers need to pay their far share in taxes.

  13. finally some of the truth comes out cannabis could eaisly b sold in gas stations making many others who grow and pick and roll and package it money thus many other jobs will open up

  14. “Cannabinoid Therapy
    is the
    Wave of the Future
    for
    Medicine.”
    You heard it here first.
There is no stopping it now.
    Never ever underestimate
    the Power of Anecdotal Evidence.
    The People have spoken.
No (more) studies need be done.
Hey, come to think of it, anecdotal evidence,
i.e., word of mouth, people to people recommendations,
    the grapevine, etc., . . . why,
    THAT’S HOW POLITICIANS GET ELECTED!
    Anecdotal Evidence elects politicos.
Now, if the politicians call for “studies”, then let’s
do studies on the politicians themselves
and see how well they hold out under the scrutiny
of a formal, repeatable, double-blind study to
determine efficacy and to make sure there are no
DANGEROUS SIDE-EFFECTS to putting these jokers
    into H~i~g~h Office.

  15. I would have to agree with Willie Nelson when he says Marijuana is a great Stress Medication. It actually is, because unlike alcohol that temporarily makes you forget about your problems, marijuana helps you to think about things from a different view and come up with a solution. Another big plus is that your not hung over for 1 or 2 days like you are with alcohol.

  16. Why does the government insist on pumping us full of synthetics instead of allowing us to use natural herbs? (Rhetorical question). By the time Marinol goes through your system (particularly the liver), at least 90% of the THC is useless to the body.

  17. JUST LOOK AT WAMM. THEY RAIDED PATIENTS WHO WERE IN WHEELCHAIRS AND POINTED THEIR M-16’S AT THEIR INFEEBLED BODIES. WHATS GOOD FOR YOU IS BAD FOR THEM. THEY ARE NOT LOOKING OUT FOR YOU. YOU ARE A REVENUE BASED NUMBER. PEOPLE JUST NEED TO TAKE THEIR SITUATIONS IN THEIR OWN HANDS. IF EVERY GROWER IN THE US WENT PUBLIC THEY COULDNT BUST THEM ALL. AND IF WE LEGALIZED IT WHAT WOULD BE THE OUTCOME? THEY DONT HAVE THE RESOURCES TO FIGHT EVERYONE. HOW ABOUT USING OUR GOD GIVEN RIGHTS AS CITIZENS TO MAKE A CHANGE, FOR EVERYONES BENEFIT.

  18. They will continue to ignore them as long as people still believe the racial and social bull that Anslinger promoted to make it illegal in the first place.
Its also nearly impossible to regulate, which is more than likely the main reason of why it is still illegal.
I honestly hope some one starts paying attention to this soon though.

  19. I tell ya, I work 2 week long outdoor concert events during the summer one is a Country Music Event, the other is a Rock Event.
The drunk cowboys are a disaster. Hell raising, cops everywhere busting people, all kinds of crazy crap. The stoned metal heads at the rock event… It’s all good. No fights, no problems, no bullshit. I’ll spend a week with a stoner any day over a drunk.

  20. Definately this is money driven, the government workers make their living by this prohibition, also drug companies as mentioned. The do-gooder population who want to control our lives for “our safety” is also involved. I have no respect for our government. To me all government workers at all levels should not be allowed to vote. They have a major conflict of interest. Additionally, anyone that takes government money should not vote. They so often vote for candidates that will continue that graft.IMHO.

  21. Wow. Maybe this would explain why I hardly get infections. I’m not exactly sure if I even care for the government anymore. Why would they continue to keep cannabis illegal? Oh wait, MONEY! but it’s our economy already failing?….I’m pretty sure that buy legalizing cannabis, it would help. I’m not saying it would dig us out of the giant financial whole we’re living in..not even make a dent for that matter…but it might just help us de-stress about the OTHER shit going on with our Country.

  22. Blessed be for NORML!!! Without people like those involved in these types of organizations we would surely be living in the dark ages. I wonder why there isn’t a class action suit or something to sue the government for it’s obvious hypocritical discrimination against those who choose not to pay for the privilege of good physical and mental health.

  23. I just find it humorous that after hundreds of these non-bias studies that have come to the conclusions that marijuana does indeed help many medical conditions, the government STILL turns a blind eye to the truth..
The study where they found that cannabinoids are on the skin was also a very good one.
Marijuana can be abused or used, they ARE different.

  24. MRSA is a mutated form of bacteria that has developed a resistance to antibiotics. If gone untreated, a MRSA-Staph infection can be fatal. Amidst all the hysteria, scientists are beginning to recognize that a particular type of honey, known as Manuka Honey, is actually effective against this notoriously resilient superbug.

  25. Lawmakers protect their own supply,(alcohol)! Let’s get
any secussful buisness men out of government and install common since people who will make lawmakers respondsible for the money in their on bank accounts.Make them account for their own actions, and create the death penalty for the the ones for who do not keep Americans at heart.I think law enforcement would rather deal with a crimnal who is stoned more than any other type.Employers are missing out on the chance to hire the millions of excellent minds who are reliable and trustworthy.Let us ask our self if we would rather our on kid’s to be drunk or high. Our goverment would rather spend our money on arrests, prosocution and inmate up keep! Who is more addicited, legal prescription yousers or pot smokers? Washingtonl law makers should try to quit sucking on the bottle and try (before they vote on our laws) to understand that they will die out,and while they are in hell wishing they could spend some of the money they wish they had, to remember that eternity is long and hot!Greed and Greed will be their downfall.Stop paying them with our votes!

  26. mmmm. . . so this research comes out of U Miss. Doesn’t the University of Mississippi have the Government sanctioned (and financed) monopoly on growing cannabis for medical research in the United States? So I am wondering, given the stated difficulty other researchers have in securing cannabis for study, doesn’t this situation also give an unfair (perhaps unconstitutional) advantage to U Miss in the development of cannabinoid medicines and patents?
    Just wondering.

  27. Jake, 23 years old Trying to be a Cystic Fibrosis survivor, Cystic Fibrosis is a lung disease that slowly deteriorates as you get older due to lung infections such as staph, and psuedomonas eats away lung tissue. I have smoked marijuana for 6 years and am able to keep very reasonable lung function and only have been hospitalized once not due to Cystic Fibrosis which is remarkable. Instinct was telling me the whole time that smoking marijuana was fighting the infections and allowing antibiotics that i do receive to work very well. Glad to finally see that i was right and was doing the right thing the whole..!! Smoke up America its only medicine..

  28. nice to see the govt. has a patent on weed essentially for the next 9 years. 🙁
Patent 6630507 Issued on October 7, 2003. Estimated Expiration Date: February 2, 2021
