Over 17,000 Cannabis-related Studies! Who Knew?!

Ever get the feeling right after a speech, presentation or debate that you didn’t include everything you wanted to?
After a few hundred public debates on behalf of NORML since 1991 in support of alternatives to cannabis prohibition, that feeling apparently never subsides…and it didn’t after a debate last week at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania with Cumberland County District Attorney David Freed.
Somewhere in the course of the formal questions, answers and rebuttals (and of course, rebuttals of rebuttals!), Mr. Freed drew upon the standard, oft-trotted, ONDCP-fed course of reasoning that 1) medical cannabis use is not accepted by health trade lobby associations like the American Medical Association, American Cancer Society and MS Society of the US (Ironically, the British MS Society supports patient access to medicinal cannabis products), and 2) there are few credible studies that look at cannabis, therefore this is proof-positive that cannabis is not a valuable, non-toxic and remarkably safe therapeutic to use under a physician’s care.
In my brief rebuttal I made two points, 1) there are hundreds of health and medical associations that support patient access to cannabis (and that, ironically the AMA was the one organization in the 1930s that actually stood up against the federal government’s efforts to create cannabis prohibition because of the plant’s clear therapeutic qualities), and 2) that cannabis (and cannabinoids) has been studied to the extreme, with over 14,000 studies on record.
In retrospect, however, I was wrong.
There are not 14,000 cannabinoid-related studies on record. Currently, there are over 17,000 according to a newly released scientific paper I failed to read before the debate!
Doh!
Note to self: Update your debate rhetoric and media talking points!
However, it is not like this one point changed the outcome of what was a well-attended, civil and informative debate.
Over the years I’ve come to learn that when it comes to debating the issue of ‘legalizing’ cannabis on a college or university campus, proponents of Prohibition and the status quo lost the debate long before they’ve hit the stage. Frankly, I think a scarecrow mounted at a podium representing reformers would win the debate anyways as college students are the most anti-prohibitionistic and pro-cannabis law reform segment of the population in America (and Canada, Europe, Australia, etc…).
NORML and I thank the students and faculty of Dickinson College for hosting a debate on the future of cannabis prohibition, and for District Attorney David Freed for his willingness to publicly discuss and debate the topic of cannabis law reform.

  1. I doubt Mr. Freed was arguing his own points. I’m sure he’s well aware of the studies and the medicinal benefits of cannabis. But he makes his living and his riches by being able to prosecute responsible and otherwise law abiding citizens.
All of the people who profit from drug prohibition have a special skill. It’s the skill of being able to completely block out their conscience for the sake of profit.
Thanks for Representing, Mr. St. Pierre! You are a beacon of freedom.

  2. Other question:
What did the local media cover, if any, and was any coverage positive?
While forums such as this are very valuable, they need to reach the masses. Unfortunately Main Stream Media, can you say oxymoron, continues to pander to a: the government and b: to corporate interests. A controls licensing and regulatory aspects, and B pays the bills, so unless MSM gets a life of its own and reports truth, rather than propaganda, the large masses will continue to be fed this garbage of no medical value.

  3. Well…good question Mathew!
Suffice to say that Mr. Freed is 1) not an extreme proponent of prohibition, 2)is moderate in his views of cannabis as compared to crack, meth or heroin 3) claims that while DA of Cumberland County, he will not incarcerate possession cases regarding cannabis in favor of alternative sentencing, fines, probation, etc…
Having debated numerous law enforcement officials over the years, Mr. Freed was eminently civil, reasonable in tone and did not seem to approach the topic of cannabis use from a moralistic point of view.

  4. I’m disappointed to hear all this. I’ve had Cancer of the stomach, also Cancer in my throat. I quit smoking cigarettes last November 20th, 2007.I also got Type 2 Diabetes, & Open-Angle Glaucoma. I take over twenty different medications everyday. If it hasn’t been for cannabis, I would of die a long time ago. But, I keep fighting, even though it sounds like I’m depressed. I am, but I’m not. Also, having Bipolar 1; Manic Depressive Disease. Why can’t we get together on these Medical Problems, & leagalized Cannabis for medical purposes. Its the only drug that I use as a street drug. It keeps the eye pain away, plus the headaches, and stops my stomach from hurting so much. And I left my address on purpose, hoping someone will contact me for assurance.I’ve been an activist for NORML since 2000. Thank You.

  5. 3 cheers for Allen St Pierre! In the UK we have a nuts Member of Parliament who is trying to get his 5 minutes of fame by petitioning to have cannabis seeds/marijuana seeds made illegal inspite of falling usage rates. I wonder who is funding him.

  6. IMHO, WE NEED TO GET POT RESCHEDULED THAT IS A 2 STEP APPROACH STEP 1 GET THE MEDICAL STUDIES FOR GLACOMA AND CHEMO-NAUSEA ETC. DONE BY TOPNOTCH UNIVERSITIES. tHIS IS WHERE STEP 2 COMES IN THESE CAN’T GET DONE AND IT HAS BEEN TRIED BECAUSE THE DEA WONT ALLOW LICENCES TO THESE PLACES TO CONDUCT THE STUDIES. STEP 2 IS FOR CONGRESS MAKE A LAW THAT ALLOWS UNIVERSITIES THE RIGHT TO GROW POT FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF CONDUCTING THESE STUDIES. ACTUALLY STEP 2 IS STEP 1 GET CONGRESS TO PAS BILL ALLOWING THE STUDY AND GROWING MARIJUANA WITHOUT INTERFERENCE FROM ONDCP AND DEA. INCLUDING THE SUPPLY OF POT WHICH NEVER HAS BEEN THE MEDICINAL QUALITY REQUIRED FOR REALISTIC STUDY. THEY WOULD GIVE US 7% THC POT AND THEN WHEN IT SHOWED NO POSITIVE EFFECT, SAY” WE TOLD YOU SO.

  7. I think a good question to ask all of you that think marijuana use should be legalized is at what point should it be controled? For example what happens if it is legalized and you have individuals driving around all Jap eyed and they create hectic conditions on the road ways? Wtf are you going to do it is legal, I mean it isn’t like alcohol you cant just give a test when you pull someone over to detect DUI. All the person would have to say is “oh Im just tired” and say that they smoked a few days ago, so that is why the test is positive. I mean there are other factors to take into account as to why this drug is not legalized.

  8. Hello Tom,
Whether or not there will be more ‘pot heads’ under tax-n-control as compared to prohibition is not the crucible question.
I suggest your obvious concerns are increasingly addressed by existing laws and technology (especially emerging roadside impairment testing) as well as evolving social mores and values that trend towards MORE not less social and legal controls (ie, DUI, open container laws, age restrictions, etc…)
There are reason that cannabis has remained illegal for over 70 years, however, you’ve not cited one….

  9. Hello Tim, Asemili, et al
Thanks for your inquiry about the recent Dickinson debate being available for the public via the Internet. I’ve contacted the school and inquired about any applicable links to audio or video files for the general public to download.
If they supply them, NORML will post them ASAP.

  10. The answer to your question from my aspect and patient,
My opinion for what its worth is (1)- Cannibus should not specifically legalized for recreational use, That is the war we are fighting-Legalize MEDICINAL CANNIBUS.
As for the recreational user, That is his or hers preference to break THE SO CALLED LAW…(2)- A 1992 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration review of the role of drug use in fatal accidents reported, “There was no indication that cannabis itself was a cause of fatal crashes” among drivers who tested positive for the presence of the drug.About the only kind of auto accident that might occur under the influence of Cannibus, is somebody might hit you in the bumper cause your goin to slow…LOL
I can speak for me and me only. But my story is,I am (was) a pretty typical guy with a very loving and supporting family, and the Pride and Joy of my life My 2 year old son Jacob. 3 years ago,i suffered a severe spinal cord injury, and didnt know if I would ever even get out of the hospital. I did obviously. Finally coming around, my neurosurgeon started refering me to all these pain management doctors, neurologist, psych evaluators, etc. and so on. The next thing I know, I am taking in excess of 24, yes 24 pills a day, so liberally prescribed by all these doctors. just to name a few 160mg. of oxycontin, 3 times a day, soma, hydrocodone for “breakthrough pain”, xanax, prozac,Morphine 60 mg. twice a day. I am now very impressed to say the least with the effect of medicinal cannibus, because it takes away some of the pain and lets me do more then i coud when i was DOPE F*****! I am off of all the meds now going on 6 months. and can actually carry a decent conversation with people without almost falling asleep. Or trying to go out with your family to eat, and have to leave , cause you fell asleep in your plate. How do you feel knowing there are people taking all of the meds I listed above, and then some, and operating motor vehicles? Those drugs are legal IF PRESCRIBED BUY A DOCTOR… Do you see What I am trying to say? by the way i hope you dont take my comments wrong in anyway, Thank God we live somewhwere that we can speak our voices and opinions…
    I am,
    Respectfully yours,
    J. Bibby

  11. I have MS
I have been to my doctor and have asked him to reccomend something other than marijuana –  He cannot
The MS society of both England & Canada acknowlegde that marijuana DOES have medical value – the MS society of America does not
It would be funny If it was not for the fact that MS HURTS.
Lets start telling the TRUTH – PLEASE!

  12. Hey Tom, do some reading on Jap eyed people and driving. And since you asked, yes they do arrest high people for driving, they test blood….so scientific too, in some states any amount of THC is considered impaired. So if someone smoked a couple days before they get a DUI. Oh and to test your blood, all they have to say is we smell an odor, so you need not worry about potheads on the road just DRUNKS. And here’s something else to keep pot heads off the road, in some states possession equals a 6 month driving suspension even if you aren’t driving. Also do you think drunk drivers are better? So drunks killing people is. Do some research, MJ related accidents are next to nothing BUT alcohol related accidents are through the roof. Also what is your definition of a pot head? Are they worse than prescription pill heads? How about meth heads? Coke heads? Drunks?
Is someone who has lung cancer, throat cancer, and diabetes is on 20 medications is that OK, since it’s legal? Nevermind that the cannabis plant might work right? Imagine being on 20 medications, imagine living that way and then imagine living in fear of arrest or just as bad imagine some guy judging you for it, calling people potheads. Open your eyes, stop being so simple…really. Or keep being simple and everything will continue down the same path and then maybe someday when you get sick you can take tons of medications while someone makes a huge profit off your illness…at least your not a pothead, right? How about the medicine cabinet, think it’s safer than a joint?
Tobacco kills and has no medicinal value, alcohol kills and has very little medicinal value, cannabis does not kill and has some medicinal value yet it’s illegal. The two legal highly addictive substances I mentioned kill approx. half a million a year yet they are legal, which is fine but both hurt innocent people in my opinion, and someone is making huge profits off it. Hell lots of someones are making money off it.
Also do you think you or even I have a right to tell people what they can use to medicate themselves, especially in this country? I personally don’t, if you aren’t hurting anyone then what do I care.
The reason I DO care is because the feds and some big time corporations are hurting people…for no reason, except to make a buck and help the cycle continue. The Drug War works, from a profit point of view.

  13. Keith,
I very much agree with all of your above statements and statistics. I have lost 6 friends, do to driving while intoxicated by alcohol, and let me say this.
“this has changed the lives of the lost in the most negative way”. I do not Like the word POTHEAD, cause
I am not, I am a MEDICINAL USER only. And also I would like to say you are exactly right, when you say, “The Drug War works, From a profit point of view”.
If it is a legit cause we are fighting for, Let us all stand, and keep standing strong. Do like some of us others have done and put you a nice little packet of info. together and locate all your congressmen, in your district and statewide, and send them your opinion, concerns, etc. Oh yeah send all of your packets Certified Mail, so they have to sign for them..
contact me or, one of the superiors of this site to see what can be done on your states level.

  14. I have arthritis that I apparently inherited from my
dad, I’ve dealt with it since I was 21 yrs. old even
though I was a regular marijuana user in my teens and twenties, as I started suffer more regularly in my
thirties, I found that although the law says I can’t get high, randoms and all that, just a small amount taken when I’m in excrutiating pain, dulls my senses enough to where I have mobility. i suffer mostly in my hips and I don’t like taking medication, but this something I’ve been used to for so many years. It’s wrong that people aren’t allowed to govern how their pain is dealt with just because someone in my opinion wants to get rich while controlling others. I think the use of medical marijuana should be for more than just Cancer and Glaucoma.

  15. Matt,
Well said my friend! I hope ole’ Arthur dont get ya down to bad. Stay strong my brother, I feel your pain daily… But I will continue to medicate as often as I need to, to be the most normal person I can with my condition.
    Take care!

  16. I did a study in New Haven, ct whether cannabis helps skitzo patients. Made money, got high, can’t go wrong and it helps people.

  17. I am an avid Cannabis supporter. I have manic depression and severe insomnia. My personal life wouldn’t exist without the occasional toke to get my head right and put me to sleep. I feel sad and confused constantly and the only thing that will rest this is marijuana. I am not a fanboy, and I do know the negatives of inhaling any crude combustion bi-products, but they far outweigh the negatives of me in a bad mood and without sleep. I have been a Marijuana user for 5 years. Never once during this 5 year period did I try any other drugs, and I am 20 years old. Every negative I’ve heard about THC is not true for myself (apart from the occasional memory lapse). The positives are there and in full effect. We allow people to drink alcohol, a drug that can kill you if taken too far. The only way that I know of to die from Marijuana is cancer or asphyxiation. The only reason it’s not illegal is because the government makes more money off of fining us and stealing our weed than they would from just selling their own.
P.S. Government: I would pay ridiculously high taxes for weed. Let’s say that I paid $100 for a quad, and you taxed me 25%… You just made $25! Now sell me 8 of those quads in a month and you just made $200. Multiply that by the 30+ people I know who smoke just as much and you’re looking at $6,000/mo ($72,000/yr) from just one small niche of kids in one small state. The amount of money that could be made could be used to do something about this oil problem. USE YOUR HEADS!

  18. Hi Jeremy,
I liked what you wrote. I’m a 50 yr old mother of 2 teens, and had bad car accident last year. I was hit head on by a “drunk” driver, and have a “non union fracture of the talus bone in my ankle. I am lucky of course to be alive, 1, and not hurt worse, 2. But it is a lifelong painful injury of the little ball joint in your ankle.
I have smoked for 35 years. I was on pain pills for about 3 months, until I could deal with the pain with just weed. This past spring, I decided to put some plants in my yard, and in August was busted for them. I strongly suspect I was “ratted” out, but it’s possible my 6 plants were spotted by the helicopter I guess. (the second cultivation arrest in the county, 2 weeks after another elderly couple) Although the cops treated me very respectably, I am facing a 5 to 15 year sentence here in Missouri. I was growing solely for myself. As it is an election year, it is very possible that the court will make an example of me. I own my own home and 3 acres, on disability, but work part time at a horse ranch. I am an otherwise law abiding citizen. I even wear my seatbelt! I pay my bills, and my credit rating is good. I am now being treated like a full blown alcoholic, addict. Because I have children, I am attending a 7 hour intensive treatment program. They are wanting me to “admit” that my life is a total mess because I am addicted to Marijuana. Of course that means I have made a wreck out of my life, and my children’s. I have a 16 year old daughter already attending college on FULL scholarship. I am a single mother, have been for 13 years. Apparently I sleep around, don’t take precautions, don’t work, and pay my bills. I will have to “make ammends” to all I have hurt because of my addiction. The people I ripped off, and f***ed over, let down, treated like crap etc. In actuality, I have helped more people than I’ve hurt, taken people in, helped people with horse related problems, fed people, been there when they needed a friend, and lent money, sometimes with no return, when I myself cannot afford to.
I haven’t been to court yet, Nov. 5Th is the date. The news papers say I was distributing, and one said to children on a school bus. I have an old bus RV, that was always an RV, never used for school children, with no engine that I let a couple of “adults” stay in for 3 months this summer. Oh yeah, some more people I allegedly screwed over. I also made sure they were not involved in the arrest, as it was all my doing, well actually my accomplis supplied the seeds, the rain that watered them, and the sunshine. His (or Her, or It) name is known as “God” to many! (Guess I can’t say that one in court here in the Bible belt!). Any way I liked what you wrote, and this prohibition has to end. I will not grow any more plants until it is legal to do so. I’ve had to quit smoking, as they are obviously testing me. I’ve had no problems with doing so. I would rather be able to of course, but I don’t “have a big empty black hole inside me” as described by true drug addicts. I have a life, sober or stoned that is quite full. Good friends, some straight who have never smoked. I can go to functions happily with out being stoned. I guess I must be quite a criminal, as I may go to prison for this offence, my first in 28 years. I am such a threat to society. I thank you for your commentary it was well said, and thank you for posting your email.
    Sincerely
    Nina Swain

The profit my county, Texas County in Missouri, is going to make off of me is astounding. They already are as I am in treatment. If I get “DRUG COURT” instead of prison, and seizure of my property (where I have lived and contributed to society for 13 years), which is possible, if not likely, the county will receive several thousand dollars to help build their new jail, and courthouse. I actually hope to get into that program, as I will at least be able to “exsist” here, with almost all of my cival rights stripped, such as they will be able to search my home anytime day or night. I will not be able to go further than 100 miles from my home. I will have to submit to random drug tests anytime day or night in my home. I will not be allowed any type of medication, prescribed or not, no matter how sick I may get, unless they send me to a psychiatrist, then I will HAVE to take those medications whether I want to or not. This just the start of it. I have never abused prescription drugs (as an adult!). I have an occasional drink, but not to excess or driving. On the bright side this program is only 18 months, and the charge will be off my record.
Never in my wildest dreams did I think in the 70’s, that pot would not only be still illegal, but that they would be actually more addament about busting people for it. Not just illegal, but a class A felony in my case. Like murder, rape, arson, armed robbery, etc. And what really makes me angry is that a fellow in the rehab class I go, to got busted for a meth lab, and he only got a class B felony!!!! They have allot of nerve saying they are really after meth, not marijuana, when 35,000 meth arrests were made last year (according to National Geographic), and almost 900,000 marijuana arrests were made! Actions speak louder than words!!!!! Then the officer was telling about this “super pot” thats out there now, a bunch of times more potent than pot was in the 70’s and 80’s. Why I wouldn’t want to see kids get a hold of that would I? I guess it might make someone eat more, and go to sleep faster. It’s still non-toxic. And where is this super pot anyway? I have not seen it. What I’ve seen around here doesn’t hold a candle to what I smoked up in New England in the 70’s and 80’s. I used to say “eat your heart out High Times”! So as far as I can tell thats just another lie. I think they are brainwashing law enforcement to make them think they are helping society with these marijuana busts. I just found an interesting site, LEAP. Law Enforcment Against Prohibition, check it out, quite interesting.

  19. I’ve been using marijuana for over 30 years on a near daily basis (I’ve stopped when unwell or in hospital). While I can accept it is not entirely harmless, it is far less harmful than many would have us believe. Importantly, for many it can bring enormous benefits – legalise now

  20. Good day
