Armed with a $1.5 million National Institutes of Health grant, Temple researchers are studying more effective ways to treat multiple sclerosis. And their research utilizes synthetic cannabinoids based on chemicals derived from the marijuana plant.
… Using a compound (O-1996) synthesized by scientists at the Medical College of Virginia and the company Organix, Tuma and Ganea performed animal studies and found that the synthesized chemical affected cannabinoid receptors present primarily on immune cells.
… “This is a totally new approach to treating this disease, “says Adler, director emeritus and senior advisor for CSAR and Laura H. Carnell professor of pharmacology research. “These cannabinoids hold enormous potential, and that’s encouraging since we’re limited in options when it comes to preventing or reversing MS.”
Okay, follow along with me if you can.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health appropriates over one million dollars to fund medical research — not to investigate the therapeutic effects of natural cannabinoids (bad!), but rather to investigate the therapeutic effects of synthetic chemicals (good!) that are designed to mimic the effects of natural cannabinoids.
Equally ironically, the research is taking place at Temple University in Pennsylvania — where any use of natural cannabis (bad!) as a medicine is criminally illegal, but where research into the use faux cannabis (good!) is embraced.
Makes sense, right? Well about as much sense as the federal government claiming that pot (bad!) has no medical utility while simultaneously patenting certain natural occurring chemicals in the plant — those that the Feds hope to one day profit from (good!) — as, you guessed it, a medicine.

Unfortunately, the disconnect in government between actual science and enacted legislation isn’t anything new. I’d posit that the struggle facing cannabis supporters has always been grounded in the field of politics, and perhaps more importantly, image. Empirical data may sway opinion and shape overall support, but until politicians are made to believe there is a net gain in votes to be harvested from supporting new marijuana policy, it’s not likely things are going to change.
The new NORML advertisement was a good start, but efforts to make medical (and perhaps recreational) marijuana legal need to hemorrhage, not merely bleed, into media outlets.

why cant this actually be brought up in court or heard in some sort of case… it’s quite obvious that there is no need for synthesizing the chemical when it’s perfectly fine how it is (well besides the fact the pharmaceuticals can’t profit off the plant). Why isn’t there some type of argument that goes against taking a naturally occurring chemical and re-synthesizing it to generate profits (and create unnecessary side effects)? it’s completely unethical.. posting on this website isn’t doing anything, it needs to be heard in courts

I work a fulltime job in the corporate world, I play a mean guitar, I surf. I used to be heavily into drinking vodka UNTIL i started smoking herb and now i might drink on occasions but really dont have a desire to drink anymore.I actually feel more focused and have more of a desire to succeed in all areas of my life…wierd huh..It also has helped me to curve my craving from nicotine…proud to say im tobacco free!!!
So why doesnt BIG BROTHER want me to inhale this magical smoke?

I find this outrageous. How much longer must marijuana be blamed for all the country’s problems? I feel as though the government is running around the obvious answer and acting as if the big elephant is not standing in the middle of the room! Obviously marijuana should be legalized if this is the conclusion they are coming up with. They have found basically nothing wrong with marijuana and everything good. It is simply mind boggling.

Oh good lord. This makes me so sick. I’ve been an MMJ patient since Feb. this year. My hair had begun falling OUT using western meds. for my migraines….I turned to cannabis to a. stop the shedding, and b. quell the insane pain from the headaches since I could no longer take the pharma. from Kaiser. I can be a lot of things but I cannot be a bald woman. Let me just say, medical cannabis has changed my life. I sleep better. I can get through a headache. My hair is growing again! I can’t believe the convoluted and ridiculous level of government involvement in a PLANT. A good friend’s mother, one who died of cancer, once said, Everything we need to heal ourselves is located on this planet.
She was certainly right. I am a true believer in this medicine. I can actually FUNCTION. Something I could not do with regular imitrex and vicadin—two medicines that flattened me, AND caused my long black hair to fall O-U-T.
It just bugs the living daylights out of me that what occurs naturally on the planet quite literally ends up being something someone wants to control. For cash. As usual.

Sounds like Marinol-2 They produce Marinol today and it is legal thanks to our lawmakers in Washington. They moved the active ingredient THC from schedule one to a lower schedule to allow the pharmaceutical companies to produce Marinol. A synthetic THC which allows them to sell it legally and make their billions. This is the main reason cannabis is illegal. Doctors in California where cannabis has been legal since 1996 say it could replace up to 80% of the drugs sold today. The pharmaceutical companies would lose 544 billion a year. Keep natural cannabis illegal so you have to buy Pharma’s synthetic cannabis pill. Once(sometime 1980’s) the Supreme Court ruled corporations can patent life if they change it just a little, everthing natural became the competition. Thank you for trying to help communicate this idea. It is the one thing I see far too often that causes recoil. Especially as more and more Americans choose the “smoke free” legislation against tobacco. The image of the Bob Marley smoking a joint is not what people need to be thinking in regards to medical cannabis.

Whether or not you believe in one-issue voting, let them think you do, and when they start getting a whole bunch of personalized letters and emails letting them know pot-smokers are pissed with their bullshit, they’ll think twice. Even better, next election cycle for your rep, mail them just before the election, and DON’T VOTE FOR THEM unless they support the legalization of MJ. That fooking simple. When they lose their office or almost lose it by a greater margin than expected, they or their party will for sure think twice next time around. Do you really want MJ legal? Then put your money and vote to work; consolidate political and financial power, or continue to get shat on.

Here is what you do. Take small actions to prepare yourself. Buy a gun while it is still legal to do so. Buy all the ammunition you can (this also allows the police to have less). Continue smoking cannabis and advocating for it. Do like the guy above me said, and become a one-issue voter; let your representatives know about it. If they don’t care, they will be voted out of office. And be prepared to fight for what you believe in, because one day you may have to.

This is what I have been saying for so long. How can you argue against the medicinal merits of this plant when our own government holds a patent on certain components? You can’t! Yet the Iowa Board of Pharmacology claimed, just on Monday, that there is non scientific validity regarding marijuana as medicine. Email these people and let them know they are only serving their own interests, the Pharmaceutical Industry. Once again we can not win this fight unless every single smoker, every smoker they n=know and all family and friends that support smokers all of us, not just the few that have came out but every single smoker in the USA needs to get active, we need to write letters, emails, and make calls to all legislators in every office local state and federal.
On top of that we all should be veruy understanding when others get arrested, we need to write mayors, Governors, local papers adn local legislators and demand they dissmiss charges or when its our time to serve the courts, “Jury Duty” We need to get on these Juries and start letting these so called criminals skate for these stupid drug offences!

This makes me think of Harold and kumar go to guantonomo bay. When they smoke with bush they call him hipocritical for putting other pot smokers in jail while he smokes. Dopamine is part of the reward system in your brain it is a survival technique that releases dopamine when you do stuff to survive(exercise/eat).
It’s kind of ironic when they are smoking marijuana to release dopamine.(because its opposite of survival(u die quicker) but you don’t care because you are pyschologicaly addicted(worst kind of addiction) to dopamine. And if the only way to get your marijuana was to steal, or hurt someone for it you would.

On April 30 I got off a train in downtown Amsterdam, walked a few blocks to a coffeeshop where I found an elderly couple about 75 years old sitting at a table on the sidewalk rolling up a joint from a nice bag of White Widow. I new I was in heaven on earth. Walked into the shop and bought 5 grams of Afghani hash (which lasted me about 2 weeks) and 2 grams of White Widow which lasted 2 days. Fuck prohibition.

Why do I feel like the people that come up with our policy in the country are just a group of retarded monkeys? This is getting out of control. Did you know the cops can search your car your house ever thing you own with no viable reason. Probable cause is an excuse for a search any time. In line with posts 18 & 49, there definitely are other options for delivery out there; particularly options that can be precisely measured and administered.
As a former (cigarette) smoker (3.5 years now), I have also sworn off smoking anything and everything from cigars & pipes to even pot. . .having said that, I’ve switched to “cookies” and find that, not only is the experience more enjoyable and longer lasting, but there IS NO ADVERSE IMPACT on my lung function!
One option would be edibles; either using cannibutter or just grinding up fresh bud (using a coffee grinder, as I usually do) and placing 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon in a cookie and placing in a toaster oven for about 5-10 minutes until golden brown. By comparison to most medical doses, this would probably be quite a low dosage; but I have noticed at this level it GREATLY REDUCES anxiety and completely eliminates the pain from GERD (reflux).
Another option would be to grind up fresh bud and put pre-measured amounts in gelatin capsules, which can be bought anywhere on the internet.
This puts a hole in the “there isn’t a safe way to administer it” method.
I’m going to begin making more regular contributions to NORML. . .the more information we can get out to the public, the better our chances of obtaining a majority opinion across the country and getting cannabis legalized.

The Government disgusts me more everyday when it comes to this issue. You are all right, it is time for action. Check out what this 17 year old kid did below. He has balls of steel, although most of us adults couldn’t do something like this due to our responsibilities (kids, wife, etc…) we can get active, write, call, donate, rally, boycott, whatever is necessary for legalization. Now here’s the story.
Well, this one certainly takes some guts. A 17 year old at Peninsula High School in Gig Harbor, WA, was giving a presentation during a monthly class called “Rhetoric Revels.” His topic? Legalizing marijuana. At the end of the presentation, in order to make a point, he pulled out a joint and smoked it in front of the class! He ate what remained of the joint (getting rid of the evidence?) and was immediately sent to the principal’s office. From there it was off to juvenile hall.
According to the Tacoma News Tribune, some of his classmates supported his actions, but school officials certainly didn’t. “We believe in freedom of speech and encourage it, but illegal activities are absolutely not going to be tolerated in our district,” schools Superintendent Terry Bouck told the Tribune.
About 120 students were in attendance when the pro-pot presentation was given. All the students were in 11th grade. No one was expecting the final flourish from the boy, who has a 3.7 GPA, but many other students thought the presentation was well presented and may have changed some minds in the audience.
When this inevitably gets picked up by national media, it will be interesting to see the reaction. If nothing else, he gets an A for creativity!

It’s all about control. The ruling-class are control freaks. They don’t like the idea that any common lower-class citizen has the ability to grow a plant and reap huge benefits from it without paying lots of money for it, so they create a bullshit pretext for maintaining laws which give them absolute control over such plants and everything that is dervied from them.
I have studied the war on drugs for years ever since a drug task force raided my home on an anonymous tip. They found nothing but I felt violated having eight armed men in my house looking for cannabis plants. Being 60 and retired this amazed me and I started reading about the war on US (drugs). It is all there to see if you read you know it it a scam.
Today I realize that it is all for greed. The major pharmaceutical companies yearly take in about 681 billion dollars selling their foul chemical drugs. Many that do more harm than good. But the FDA seems to be in their pocket. They fight and spend millions every year to insure cannabis is kept illegal. Doctors in California, were cannabis has been legal since 1996, say it could replace up to 80% of the chemicals the legal drug pushers sell. That would mean a loss of 544 billion to the legal pharmaceutical guys. This is why they pay our representatives millions every year. Our representatives vote and fight to continue sacrificing our lives to insure the millions keep coming.
Because the war affects mainly the poor people of color and does not affect them or their family (they are above the law) they continue to destroy almost one million lives a year just to insure their PAC check clears. If you doubt what I say go and do you own research its all there to see….

Oh the wisdom of mankind! Cannabinoids in their natural state are bad for our individual and collective health and well being. BUT, let us remanufacture them with a hundred different chemicals that are known to be toxic and we will create a perfectly safe from of medicine. BULL****! With that in mind, what kinds of addictive and toxic substances will the fed manufacture from marijuana? How can they believe that any substance in a highly concentrated form is going to be less harmfull than its natural form when even salt, the spice of life, becomes toxic when taken in concentration? To my knowledge, no one has ever overdosed on THC no matter how they consume it. So, go ahead congress, concentrate it and mix it with man-made toxic chemicals and put it in a form that can be easily consumed in huge doses; [i.e. a fistfull of pills], that will become harmfull even as salt does.

And yes, I do understand all the ‘interested parties’ and their power. However, ultimately, if the Supreme Court ever takes a case such as this one, they would have to somehow explain in a very detailed document as to how Merinol and other synthetics are of value while natural marijuana is not. They will also have to do the explaining based on all the medical evidence and scientific research which proves that it simply cannot remain a class I narcotic for the plain reason that it is medically useful. – PROVEN EMPIRICALLY.
I know the Supreme Court does not write laws per say, but they can issue a ruling on the constitutionality of a specific law, and since this affects the freedom of millions – (no not ‘potheads’ I know they will shrug them off – even though it affects them too since at any given point they are in danger of being thrown in jail, but people sitting in prisons’) this is definitely a life & liberty issue…

However, people use to make alcohol back in the day as well, but when it became legal, it was far more convenient to just buy it at the store. The same would apply with marijuana. I wouldnt sit around growing it if I had the option of heading to my local CVS or Walgreens. I think most who want it to enjoy would follow suit. I know the government would tax the hell out of it, but that is one tax that I wouldnt mind paying.

How can marijuana be a schedule 1 drug when the government patents chemicals that naturally occur in pot for medical use? I thought a schedule 1 drug was one with a high potential for abuse (Tobacco/Alcohol?), and no medicinal value (Tobacco/Alcohol?)
Lets take something nonlethal and practically harmless, and alter it, so that pharmaceutical companies can charge a fortune, we pay a fortune, and the government.. makes a fortune!

The only reason they use synthetic THC is because Fed law says it’s a class 1 drug. Which means no one is allowed to have it in possession not even the drug makers.
But because of using the synthetics can give room to legalizing marijuana because now there is proof that it has a “medical value” to it.
There are other facilities in the US that are doing tests on marijuana when it comes to todays potency, which if all the research was combined it would show by far that “Pot” is medically viable and should no longer be illegal. By the way can anyone show the medical values of smoking cigarettes or drinking liquor? But “pot” on there other hand can help with … well you get the point.

Pot does cause crime, not because of any chemical dependency or craving, not because of any reaction to it.
Because its illegal there is a vast underground market, people are killed over it, in the states its grown illegally in farms hidden in nation parks and national forests. Its sold illegally, and people get very defensive about it, about protecting themselves over turf wars and being ripped off.
I can agree with you that if it were legal it would not cause crime. It being illegal does however cause crime.

by the simple statement that it does not cause it, you leave out the entire bit of crime that is caused by its current legal status.
I think you can get away with that here on NORML’s site because for the most part people that visit and read the stories and comments here are already well enough educated that they see where your going with it.
However on other sites, and articles, places where you are trying to educate the people who read it and maybe do not have a stead fast reaction and decision to it, you do your cause a disservice with that simple statement instead of any detail immediately following, or maybe rewriting, that single simple statement.
Just a thought on picking words carefully and giving full facts on statements you make.
At this time in our country we are closer than ever before to removing the astigmatism associated with pot, we are closer than any time before at making it legal, again! We can not afford to lose any single alli in the fight. I think that your statement does exactly that, it alienates people because they know there is crime associated with pot.
If its explained in a bit more detail than screaming propaganda, then those people can see why you say its false.
I only know this from conversations and arguments with people over me saying the very same thing you said.
