Marijuana Dispensaries Are Coming To New England

While New Jersey lawmakers continue to stall statewide efforts to provide legal patient access to medical marijuana, a pair of New England states — Maine and Rhode Island — have quietly and expeditiously embraced the process.

In Rhode Island, Health officials are deciding who among 15 applicants will receive state authorization to produce and dispense marijuana to the state’s 1,800 registered patients. And in Maine health officials gave public approval today to three separate nonprofit corporations to supply and provide patients with medical marijuana via six statewide facilities.

While it is understandable for activists and advocates alike to look forward to the day when the criminalization of marijuana has been lifted for all adults, we must also not overlook the significant process that we are making, and have made, in recent years. Even just three or four years ago it would have unthinkable to believe that state governments would be licensing private citizens to grow and dispense marijuana. But today we are seeing this progress happening right before our eyes. And even more encouraging, there seems to be very few people left who oppose it.

If you have not done so already, now is definitely the time to get active — and to get NORML!

  1. its good now that there doing it, besides some of the states accepting it medicaly now were having support from other places to encourage eveyone eventually thatll happen progress is being made:D

  2. tell cancer patients to instead of buying smokeable buds to reach for the hash oils and digest in small dosages. these are available at many dispensaries and can treat the root cause of the disease instead of merely masking symptoms

  3. My issue with the medicalization of marijuana is that it implies that users are sick in some way. with evidence that mj protects against certain cancers, and has many other health benfits, it should be viewed as a wellness product, like a supplement. I’ve been at it for almost 40 years and my health is better than most 20-somethings.

  4. The power of being verbally opinionated to support the legalization of MMJ or MJ is now evident. We’ve done all this in two years! What’s coming in the next year to two years MJ fans? 🙂

  5. I’ve asked everyone on my Facebook page to join NORML. I tell everyone I know to join and support NORML. I hope all of you that read this do the same. My reason is I don’t think the government should be allowed to tell us what we can or cannot put into our bodies. After all who controls/owns our bodies? Do you really want someone in government having that much control over what you consume. They are now telling us how much sodium we can have in our processed food. Where will this end? Thank you NORML for protecting our personal freedoms!

  8. Yet NH’s neanderthal governor, a Democrat mind you, refuses to sign legislation our house and senate passed for medical marijuana.

  9. It is to bad that some just don’t understand what it is like to constantly be in pain when you have exhausted other resources.

  13. I want weed to be treated like all other drugs in the same category. This drug is listed as having no medical benefits yet our government mails out this drug to citizens to help them. We have people that get weed mailed to them from the US government. How is this listed as having no medical benefits yet our government mails it out. Either admit that this is beneficial or do not mail out this evil weed that people go to jail for possessing.

Allow me to get some weed to break the addiction like herion causes. If this is such an evil substance we need treatment centers to handle all the addictions and mental health centers to help with all the mental problems we all have.

This is the 1st day I hope to live the rest of my life without cigarettes. After 25 years of smokin those things that are printed with the advertisment that “Smoking this will kill you”.

This government will allow me to purchase a product that contains THC. Instead of buying cigarettes that will kill me this government will only get extra tax money from me on those legal products that have THC.

  14. I just looked this up on wikipedia. Can this still have no medical benefits if the US has a finding listing all the medical benefits.

The Health and Human Services Division of the federal government holds a patent for medical marijuana. The patent, “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants”, issued October 2003[147] reads: “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia…”[183]

  15. PLEASE HELP! Evidently Obama gets feedback from comments that Jon Stewart makes on “THE Daily Show”. We are trying to get Stewart to take NOTICE of recent raids by DEA in medical marijuana states. Please help by.. 1. going to the facebook page “THE DAILY SHOW” (include “the”). 2. Click LIKE 3. Add a comment calling attention to the recent raids under “other” (immediately under the wall comment box). Trying to get 50 in the next couple hours!! Please help! Cut and paste if you must…. WHY all the raids on medical marijuana by the DEA?? The Obama administration policy was to respect each States Medical Marijuana Laws. Why has there been in increase in DEA raids in Medical Marijuana states?

  16. I bet you are most likely an alcoholic loser. Wow, theres tons of deaths associated with marijuana! My family was destroyed and torn apart from alcoholism…marijuana has done nothing but positive in my life. I hate drinking. How dare you losers knock a medicine when doctors prescribe heroin in pill form?

  17. My warmest support from California. I do not know if the voter referendum process is in the Rhode Island constitution, but I believe you enjoy an active and very well informed citizenry. Stay on it, please! Marijuana prohibition is mostly the result of willful ignorance and prejudice. Stay Green,
    John in California
