Scientific trials have for decades documented the anti-cancer properties of cannabis and its constituents. Yet it took until this week for the website of the National Institute of Cancer, a component of the U.S. government’s National Institutes of Health, to finally acknowledged the herb’s therapeutic utility for patients living with disease or suffering from the adverse side-effects of cancer treatment.
In a newly added section to the website, entitled ‘Cannabis and Cannabinoids,’ the Institute states:
Cannabinoids may cause antitumor effects by various mechanisms, including induction of cell death, inhibition of cell growth, and inhibition of tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. Cannabinoids appear to kill tumor cells but do not affect their nontransformed counterparts and may even protect them from cell death.”
…The potential benefits of medicinal cannabis for people living with cancer include antiemetic effects, appetite stimulation, pain relief, and improved sleep. In the practice of integrative oncology, the health care provider may recommend medicinal cannabis not only for symptom management but also for its possible direct antitumor effect.”
It’s a stunning acknowledgment, given that the NIH is a branch of the very same government that presently maintains that the cannabis plant and all of its naturally-derived components have ‘no accepted medical use.’ Yet it also begs the question: Where has the National Institute of Cancer been all these years?
After all, the anti-tumor activity of cannabinoids were initially documented in 1975! That’s right; it’s taken 36 years for the Institute to get with the program.
Hopefully it won’t take them another 36 years to demand that the Feds finally assess whether these preclinical results are replicable in human trials.

I have told people about how cannabis smoke will not give you cancer and may actually prevent it, but most of them just blew me off. Let them blow this off now.
Why are we only finding out about this now? Has this been covered up for thirty six years? I want to know. How come more studies are not allowed by the US Government? If cannabis can be used to help in the treatment of cancer then let’s start using it. To deny medical treatments for something as serious as cancer in the name of some silly war on drugs is shear lunanacy.

This is AWESOME!! Great progress on this rough road. I do ask the question, why are we not pushing for a federal medical bill? Get your prescription from a pain management doctor, have a panel that evaluates the doctors and randomly pull patient records to evaluate and to assure they are qualified, and if they aren’t it’s at the hands of the doctor. Then just set up a plan for each patient 4 plants that they can differ growing their own to a qualified grower which would be sold and taxed. Would this not be the next step instead of all out legalization? If a federal law was enacted for medical, other states would be stupid to allow this because it will create the revenue that it could create for the states/feds. It just seems like when we’re wanting a president to consider marijuana, it’s to all out legalize. Maybe I’m wrong though.

I believe it is a matter for the majority of people to see that the whole cannabis prohibition, the whole DEA “dogma” that “marijuana is a dangerous drug without accepted medical use” be exposed in its anti-scientific, deceptive nature. Cannabis is not physically addictive as it lacks the recognizable “physical withdrawal syndrome” (like opiates, or alcohol, for example); the so-called “gateway drug theory” has been proven to be nonsense by a scientific research, and was even declared “half-baked” by a recent study; drug Marinol, much touted by the DEA, is not at all the same as medicinal cannabis which, as opposed to Marinol, has over 70 active compounds interacting in therapeutic ways. Cannabis decriminalization is followed by a decrease (not an increase) in “teenage use”, as the example of Portugal clearly shows, and (with another major scare-tactic disintegrating), smoking cannabis does not increase one’s risk of lung cancer; combine all this with the violence-suppressing qualities of cannabis use, its propensity to be a “safe alternative” to alcohol/hard drugs, its remarkable medicinal properties, and then see if the DEA “dogmas” have any factual foundation and not just an empty talk that is being enforced by a version of philosophical “radical pragmatism” which basically “allows” its followers to disregard the truth in favor of, let’s say, DEA “dogma”, with such a dogma being constantly “reinforced” by a consciousness of “guilt” and “fear”. “Radical Pragmatism” was at the basis of Illinois patients being denied their medicine, because the DEA intimidated enough “law-makers” with the “non-existing entity” of a “gateway drug theory. The same way, some rogue politicos in Montana are trying to trample the will of Voters of that state by “repealing” the medical marijuana law! So, what we (and I mean, all of us) need to do is spread this scientific knowledge (along with the refutation of “dogma”), so that even for the politicians this becomes a question of either siding with fear and ignorance (which will assure one kind or “legacy”), or with science, progress and compassion, which will bring a totally different “legacy” altogether; I doubt that any of these crooks will enjoy a “legacy” of him remaining silent when the modern-day “storm-troopers” dragged a cancer-afflicted granny to jail for using medicinal cannabis. That was ever so very bold of them, eight years After the USA government was awarded US Patent #6630507 relating to the medicinal use of cannabis, one year After the Veterans Administration okayed use of cannabis for the treatment of G.I.s, and months After the DEA opened a Big Pharma-specific loophole in the use of natural extracts of cannabis in Their prescription medications.
Of course, application of Cannabis Sativa as a natural herbal medicine is far too dangerous a “narcotic” to be allowed to those States that decriminalize cannabis or enact Medical Marijuana programs. “No clinical trials of Cannabis as a treatment for cancer in humans were identified in a PubMed search.”
“No published studies have explored the effect of inhaled Cannabis on appetite in cancer patients.”
“In clinical trials of Cannabis, euphoria is often scored as an adverse effect.[1,2]”
“At present, there is insufficient evidence to recommend inhaling Cannabis as a treatment for cancer-related symptoms or cancer treatment–related side effects outside the context of well-designed clinical trials.”
The biased article did state that two synthetic forms of THC “are effective in the treatment of N/V induced by chemotherapy.[9-12]”
“The researchers reported that patients who used nabilone experienced improved management of pain, nausea, anxiety, and distress when compared with untreated patients. ”
This “new” information posted by the feds actually slams marijuana and perpetuates the anti-marijuana propaganda that has been espoused for decades by the federal prohibitionists. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. This is all well and good but nothing is as it seems. Even though I would like nothing more than to applaud and be thankful for the efforts of these much needed entities. I cannot help but think it’s not being done for us, the people. You tell me one drug that has been on “the list” that they’ve come out and said it should be legalized outright? Name me one! You honestly expect me or anyone else to believe that once they “re-schedule” cannabis that somehow it will magically become legal in the future? Think about it. If cannabis were to become legal then the price would be driven down. That won’t do in a country of souls to sell. If they can find a way to keep a substance, cannabis, that is far less toxic than alcohol and tobacco, legal substances, from becoming legal and driving it’s price with the help of Pharms then everyone, BIG Mega-corps, govt. wins. Tobacco and alcohol will keep the majority of their clientele and Pharms will have yet another commodity, cannabis/HEMP/oils, in which to sell for a huge profit. Also the govt. will have a leg on which to stand concerning the fight against cannabis as just. Who’s really profiting from this move? Us? No! Nearly 2 decades ago, it was discovered that we have THC receptors in our brains. These nodes have no other porpose than to receive and process THC and Cannibanoids. Why are they there? I’ve been using for medical purposes for over 10 years. It has made a huge, I mean, HUGE difference in my life. It’s not legal in my state by the way.
I fail to understand how it’s ok for me to ingest enough morphine and hydrocodone to overdose any two average people just so I can go to sleep for 3 or 4 hours, but it’s not ok to take a few puffs from my pipe to do the same thing.

I wouldn’t be to sure about the fresh water – especially the bottled water. It’s been suggested that they are adding a few additives to bottled water – and – the bottles themselves. CAUTION: Cannabis has not been proven to “cure” cancer. It has only been shown to stop or slow down the growth of cancer cells without effecting the healthy tissue. You have to cut off the blood supply [cancer food] to the effected tissue [and then] say a little prayer.
Finally. Whats sad is that if they would have continued research back in the 70’s we would probably be close to a cure by now, or at least have a less painful/dangerous treatment (Chemo).
My mother died in 1992 from colon cancer. She had Chemo and that stuff you can not put down a drain, but this goverment thinks it is safe for my mom to have it shot throught her veins.If this was legal then, my mom might not have died or she would at least not been in so much pain. Is link available for the .gov version? And who will fund (and approve) human clinical trials? Tramatic brain injury seems to be an issue where cannabis helps; in my personal experience, especially with seizures, so perhaps a looking thru broad agency announcements could help with funding for returning vets (m.a.p.s. is working and sueing for approval to study). Perhaps a fund could be started to help with the cost of human double blind studies? if not the truth will stay underground…. Cannabis/Kava tinctures, terpenes, etc. should all be explored; big pharm and various agencies have plenty of money to hire teams of lawyers to keep the “be tough on crime” line, lotsof paychecks in that racket.

The NIH has been busy with weed in the last 36 they filed US Patent #6630507 back in Feb. 2nd of 2001 on the medical use of CBD (cannabidoil)in the full text there is a line that reads “Unlike present chemo medications that are all cytotoxic to both healthy as well as cancer cells, cannabidoil has been found to be cytotoxic to cancer cells, yet cytoprotective of healthy cells.”
