Tuesday Dr. Oz asks "Medical Marijuana: Is it Time to Make it Legal?"

Tue, Mar 29, Dr. Oz show asks "Medical Marijuana: Is it Time to Make it Legal?" (click image for promo video, available to Mar 30, 2011)
On Tuesday’s edition of The Dr. Oz Show NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre appears along with Montel Williams and Dr. Donald Abrams, as well as an audience loaded with NORML activists from around the Tri-State area.
The show, “Medical Marijuana: Is it Time to Make it Legal?” also brings in former ONDCP staffer Andrea Barthwell (now a consultant for a firm she created called EMGlobal Public Health) and audience members from a heroin rehab center to examine the issue of medical marijuana.
Because, after all, medical marijuana could lead to heroin addiction (*face palm*).
Click the image to visit the Dr. Oz website and watch the promotional video – you’ll hear St. Pierre telling Barthwell “you’re wrong!” and you” hear Williams respond with righteous indignation in support of medical marijuana.  (That video will be gone by Wednesday.)  Check the Dr. Oz website or your local listings to find if and when the Dr. Oz show airs in your area.

  1. I’ve watched the morning repeat of yesterday’s Dr Oz Show, and I have been hearing the words “addiction” many times and also the threat of marijuana becoming a “big business” and “organized crime” many times through out the show.
Many statements that are made are unquestioned because of the time limit of the program. Those statements are mostly subliminal cheap shots against marijuana.
Dr. Oz have said, “I’m repulsed by marijuana becoming a big business!”

  2. wow, so i just finished watchin the dr. oz show. that whole crowd got into that heated debate . i hope this issue will appeare everyday on the news and so on . legalize baby! lets new york !

  3. I’m sorry to say this and I know that I will be possibly stepping on some toes, but…. I think a majority of everyday Americans who disagree with cannabis use are doing so because they have “moral” objections with it. Like several other “debates” where scientific fact is blantantly ignored or miss represented, these people will insert their bias and bigotry into any arguement. They believe that the answer to these debates has already been given, in their various holy books and tomes. They can’t believe that anyone can argue with what they believe, because, after all, they have “god” on their side. Yes, granted, there are christians who believe differently. And I will uphold your right to believe anything you want. But when you try to shove your beliefs down my throat, when the facts show your beliefs are crap, that is where your rights stop. Let me be who I am, so you can be who you are.

  4. OK..so there weren’t “plants” in the audience. There actually were maybe 25 people against it and the rest of the studio for it. I noticed that when I mentioned that no one had ever died from marijuana overdose since it’s first recorded use in 2525 BC. Everyone stood up and hooted and hollered..except the 2 rows that kept yelling out and stating facts directly from the script of Reefer Madness..The fact that they edited that one sentence out of my response to his question makes me question his validity. The pro marijuana side had lots of speak time but they seem to have cut and edited the heck out of the actual show. We taped for over 2 hours. It took me over 2 hours to get mad enough to yell at them..but they made it look like I went form calm to crazy in 20 seconds. Also they told us the question we were going to be asked before the show..they edited it to make it look like I yelled out to get him to come over to me. Amazed by the finished biased end product. They have a whole nother show with the clips on the editing room floor.

  5. How is consuming cannabis a HEALTH ISSUE when you cannot OD or DIE from its use?! EXPLAIN IT TO ME! Not that placing words in caps will help I only aim to bring attention to that which is obvious.
Hey Bob, “moral”-which you quote to insist on as you actually having morals. “debates”-which are nothing more than opinion based statistics no matter what the facts are. “god”-which doesn’t apply to you since you’re atheist. No ones “shoving” anything down your throat so stop with the theatrics.
“when the facts show your beliefs are crap?”
Show me your facts on how the bible is not factual. It’s fiction cause you choose to believe in visual confirmation and not in aspects which you cannot perceive. I don’t pretend to “know” how we came to be but I’m going to take a shot in the dark and say that you’re not the foremost expert on the “evolution” or “creation” of our life and universe either.

Not every faithful individual feels the way you suggest. However – in fact – there are some who have even changed the Bible to [now] read “fruits and vegetables” instead of “the green herb.” You just can’t change the Bible [defy it] to suit your opinion. So! try this on for size.
Genesists believe that God [created] Manna in Genesis I:11,12.
    11. And God said, let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth, and it was so. 12. And the earth brought forth grass, and the herb yielding seed after its kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after its kind; and God saw that it was good.
Genesists believe that God [gave us] Manna in Genesis I:29,30,31.
    29. And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed, to you it shall be for food/meat. 30. And to every beast on the earth, and to every fowl in the air, and to everything that creepeth on the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for food/meat. 31. And God saw everything that he had made, and Behold, it was very good, and the evening and the morning was “The Sixth Day.”
Genesists believe that God [reaffirmed] the gift of Manna in Genesis IX:3.
    3. And God said, every moving thing that liveth shall be food/meat for you; even as the green herb, have I given you all things.
    Ezekiel [the Prophet] 34:29,30,31.
    29. And I will raise up for them a plant of renown, and they shall be no more consumed with hunger in the land, neither bear the shame of the heathen any more. 30. Thus shall they know that I the Lord their God am with them, and that they are my people sayith the Lord God. 31. And ye my flock, the flock of my pasture, are men, and I am your God, sayith the Lord God.”
    Exodus 30:22-29
    22. Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses saying, 23. Take thou also unto thee principle spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty sheckels, and of sweet calamus [kaneh bosem – cannabis] two hundred and fifty sheckels, 24. And of cassia five hundred sheckels, after the sheckel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: 25. And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be a holy anointing oil. 26. And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony. 27. And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, 28. And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and thee laver and his foot. 29. And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy.
So – Bob! How’s that for being faithful to God – on our side? Hope you have a great CDXX Communion.

  7. You couldn’t really expect anything more from a doctor that works for Oprah. This is what happens when emotional bias is dominant over rational objectivism – a “doctor of celebrity medicine” who doesn’t know the difference between cannabinoid receptor agonists. And opiate receptor agonists. Again – he shills for Oprah – another self righteous type who claimed MDMA puts holes in your brain.

  8. Barthwell couldnt open her mouth with out telling a lie. She sees the writing on the wall and she is tring to cash in. She has a personal intrest. WE ALL KNOW THE TRUTH SO SAVE YOUR LIES. The whole audience should have stood up and sayed lier all at the same time.

  9. the reason the goverment will not make marijuana legal is that a number of years ago congress passed a bill that alowed corporations the ability to buy as many mass news media outlets as they can buy. that is why you will never hear the truth and any news programs. until big pharmacuticals can mimick marijuana they will kill a push to legalize pot. its all about money , they dont ever care that thousand upon thousands of people do not have the medicine they need . not utill the big companies can make a killing off of there drugs. politicians will protect thes companies because of campaign contributions. until we the people take back control of our goverment they will take advantage of us , lie to us, i wish we could get the truth but as long as major corporations own the news outlets youll never get the truth

  10. @Calc and @Bretheren:
Really I would consider myself an anti-theist more than atheist. As I said not ALL christians believe cannabis is bad..The point I was trying to make is that science gives us a testable, repeatable and independently verifiable conclusion of fact, not some ethereal experience that has to be accepted on faith. Wouldn’t you say that your interpretation of biblical “truth” varies widely and greatly between those of your OWN faith. And yes, I am not a expert in evolution, but at least I listen to those individuals that study it every day, and know it is true based on facts. Yes, evolution is a fact. And that same scientific method is showing that cannabis, for the most part, is not harmful…another fact.
Oh, and Calc I would put up my superior secular morality up against yours ANY TIME.

“There’s always two sides to every story – life is 50/50” – but – I’d rather be treated by a doctor that works for Oprah than a doctor that’s on the mortician’s payroll. “A doctor is a doctor – and – not much of a doctor if he can’t take an eyeball out with a shoe horn.” At least he is giving cannabis recognition – that’s more than most medicos will do. Follow the yellow brick road.

  12. 60. Bob
As I said in #56. [you and I agree on this] faith does vary – because – some rewrite the Bible to suit their own opinion – but – Genesists stand [as] the monotheistic Bible is written – and – for that there will be no variance [as] your secularism has no variance in your opinion – but – hear me now – Faith and Science cannot compete. The two cannot compete because they are one and the same. Genesists do not give credence to the opposing elements of faith and science. Faith and science are not adversaries. Faith and science provide complimentary perspectives of the same reality. Genesists seek a greater concord [harmony] between Faith and Science. Genesists maintain that both are rooted in the same reality. That is to say: “One [can] say that God created science – but – [can] one say that science created God?” Although it is presumably so, [that] evolution [could] occur absent creation, creation [then] becomes a matter of “personal choice and individual faith.” Although faith does not require evidence, as does science require evidence, the reality of our existence [is] the “evidence” in either case, and is “a matter of free choice.” An argument for science can be made that if we cannot test religion, as we can/must test science, it’s not religion – it’s religious fiction. The argument for evolution can be made by the fact that the embryo [The God Cell] evolves from the embryo state to the mature state – [that] the mature state cannot evolve from the mature state to the embryo state – that the embryo [God Cell] always comes first. Faith could present the argument that science is the systematized knowledge derived from observation, study, and experimentation carried on in order to determine the nature or principles of what Nature’s God has created, and given – i.e. the laws of nature. The concept that everything in the universe is a matter of probability and chance only begs the question – “Who or what made it that way?” To the devout scientist, we might say – science has as many fabulous mysteries as faith does – that both are wonderfully mysterious. The conclusion is that – “We have the gift of God’s love – the free will to decide.” So whether you believe in God or not – Have a great CDXX Communion.

  13. It’s sad there were no links to you tube on studies because people didn’t believe it. They have been brainwashed so long.

  14. Manny
As I have said before, you have a right to believe anything you want. My intent was not to debate yours (or anyones) faith, or lack there of. My original post stands, though, that MOST christians(along with many other religions) have a moral objection to cannabis. They feel it is a “sin” to be drunkards and not be sober-minded. We are fighting against morally justified ignorance – to them a “sin” is a “sin”, and the facts be damned. I’m sorry… but it is just a little frustrating that the science is a non-starter for these people – because they have had their mind made up by some lore of antiquity.

  15. 67. Bob
We agree! It is a “damn shame” that science doesn’t precede a closed mind – whether religiously induced, or just out of fear or ignorance [which by the way – they also have a “right” to believe what they want or morally object to] – but – now you’re aware that not all people of faith oppose our Sacrament – especially Genesists, and may I include Christians for Cannabis. I have “many” secular friends, which oddly enough, includes our attorney who defends our Constitutional rights with a passion.
    Have a great 420
    Manny

  16. I have no objection to cannabis. Few saints in a world full of sinners. You can place me with the sinners at least I can admit it. While others walk around and act as if they have all the answers and are god’s gift to the world. If you do grasp the enigmatic then I can only assume that you realize their are aspects in life that man hasn’t yet been able to define/extrapolate? In most cases the ability to derive and consume but the inability to control and utilize in a 0% fail-safe. I agree with you on the mass importance/gravity of Science, the facts surrounding evolution and cannabis having beneficial properties to which it’s illegality should be in question. I don’t take kindly to those that wish to circumvent issues that matter to some but not to others. Apologies for the curtness of my previous comments.
Oh, and Bob your superior secular morality isn’t my problem. I welcome your psychoanalysis ANY TIME. Traditional classy.

  17. Bob and Calcula7ed
Yup! Looks like we are all on the same page – “prohibition must go – and – so must its master.” So! let’s get busy. We [all of us] are known by our actions – not by our words. “Nothing happens – unless we make it happen – and – we can make anything happen.” 4-20 @ 4:20 is only 20 days away. We only have 20 days to drill through 6 inches of thick skull. Watch how fast that gets here. Let’s make this National Hemp Day mean something great.
Calcula7ed – You [in my opinion] can be as curt as you want – your opinion shows its passion. I wish everybody had the same passion.
Bob – I respect your steadfastness to your opinion – as I’m sure you do mine/ours.
    Now! Let’s have a great 420 – or – CDXX Communion.

  18. has anyone considered or filed an antitrust lawsuit vs alcohol companies? Why should they have a monopoly on recreational drugs?

  19. As I understand it anyone may file a Qui Tam lawsuit demonstrating that the federal government is being cheated via a false claim in contracts and collect a percentage of what gets recovered.
There are catches, something about the proceedings being secret. (go figure)
Certainly cannabis prohibition is completely based on false claims about safety and efficacy, and drug warriors all operate on contracts.
If you have the money or can find a commission attorney, it’s open season . . .

  20. Did you catch that Andrea Barthwell works for Dr. DuPont? Is he from the same DuPont lineage as the company that helped (and is still helping) with keeping cannabis under prohibition? I bet he is. What a joke.

  21. 73. Dave DeVries
Yup! And he’s a part of the anti-cannabis click. Think about “who” the rest of the culprits are. Follow the money.

  22. Pleeeeeaaaase, get Oz off this subject. The gig is laughable. He uses a map of the U.S. to show how many users there are which is nonsense. If he really cared about addictions, why in the world doesn’t he do a state map of alcoholics. Alcohol has been legal since the late 30s. I could fill his map to over-flowing with deaths caused by alcohols…but does he EVER come down hard on drinking: NO! Get real Oz.
