Ask the Republican Candidates Where They Stand on Cannabis Reform

Google and Fox News will host a debate between Republican primary candidates in Orlando on September 22nd. Similar to the “social media townhalls” President Obama has previously hosted, this debate will consist exclusively of questions submitted by the public. This forum provides advocates with a unique opportunity to put these presidential hopefuls on record regarding their position on marijuana law reform.
NORML has submitted a question for consideration:
“As president, would you stand up for states’ rights by ending federal marijuana prohibition and allow them to experiment with models of decriminalization and legalization without federal interference?”
Here is how you can voice your support and promote this question:

Step 1: Go to Fox News’ Youtube page here.
Step 2: Click the “Vote” tab at the top of the page.
Step 3: In the topics box, select “Social Issues”
Step 4: Click “Video Questions.”
Step 5: You should see our video question towards the top of the list, look for the NORML logo in the thumbnail. Click the thumbs up icon next to the question.

The current line up of candidates have gone to great lengths to distance themselves from the current policies of President Obama, yet most have remained silent on the topic of marijuana law reform (that is, of course, excluding Ron Paul). Take a moment of your time to vote up our question, if these candidates want your vote, don’t you deserve to know where they stand on cannabis?

  1. I would like to know where you stand on legalizing cannabis? As a nation that is touted as a free country, why is this such a big deal to keep it illegal? Abortion is legal and that is murder of unborn children. Marijuana used to be legal until 1937 and alcohol was once illegal. I think we legalized the wrong substance. If cannabis was legalized we could get rid of the drug traffickers that bring it into our country, grow it, process it, package it, and tax and sell it. Seems like a solution to many of our problems. Maybe we can convince the tobacco industry to stop growing tobacco and plant cannabis instead, so they won’t lose their revenue, just switch products. 🙂

  2. Would you fight to remove marijuana’s schedule 1 status and face cannabis in the light with regards to cannabinoids and cancer research/medicine, as a natural renewable resource, drug war/spending reductions and recreational use?
This was my question but the FOX site did not accept it and looped their list of questions to the same five or six over and over…!
FOX is totally rigged and un-trustworthy.
They should not even be considered a news organization but rather an employer of opinionated hosts.
They will slight the cannabis issue at this debate!

  3. I don’t know if anyone is aware, but it doesn’t seem to be counting my vote – even when logged in to a YouTube account. I click on the thumb up and the vote advances to the next number, then when I refresh the page, the vote returns back to the number before I voted. I tried twice in a 6 hours span. Is this a system issue or an intentional thwarting of the question by the administrators?

  4. Ron Johnson, ex-Governor of New Mexico is another candidate who advocates for decriminalizing and taxing marijuana.

  5. vote Ron Paul or John Huntsman 2012! both have expressed their support for reforming Cannabis laws!!

  6. You should also vote down their false
    top social issue
Do you believe that elected officials should be held to the same laws passed for the citizenry?

  7. Tom # 5 -same issue with me. Exactly as you described it. I too contacted Fox thru their YouTube page, but no reply.

  8. Funny that most of the other questions pertain to legalization too. I can just see in my mind that fucking Gretchen (Miss Piggy Faux and Fiends) smirking and squirming like she just ate a canary when she asks about legalizing. All very sickening to even ask a Repuke this question. Bunch of pandering Kochsuckers, all of them.

  9. I just posted this as a text under “social issues”
Why are voters on this forum poll who vote on questions regarding marijuana legalization NOT having their votes tallied? We vote, refresh the page and when we come back the vote is not counted. Is this a FOX NEWS conspiracy to thwart legalization?
Let’s see if you all can vote on this or if they pull the question.

  10. It’s a political OPPORTUNITY for these people, and they don’t seem to realize it. They can gain the fervent support of a very large cross-section of the electorate if they support legalization, and effectively distinguish themselves from the field as TRUE believers in limited government. This ought to be a no-brainer. Hmmm… No brainer… Rick Perry?

  11. @15
I wonder why we are stereotyped as being crazy and paranoid?
I’m guessing you are trying to vote more then once. It is most likely using IP discrimination and counting your additional votes as invalid. I doubt it’s what you think it is. They would simply not ask, if they don’t like a question.
The simplest explanation tends to be the correct one. Lots of people get rich right now off prohibition and they are fighting for their scam. They will lie cheat steal and take your freedom, so watch out. They DO hate you, but I doubt they are out to get you specifically.

  12. I don’t like the question. For example, eliminate the word “experiment,” otherwise, candidates will dance around the question and instead talk about the dangers of “experimenting” with drugs.
Here’s a better question: Why are you in favor of continuing to label cannabis users as felons and lock them away in prisons?

  13. Ron Paul is so Intelligent he’s a Doctor. COME ON, come on.
[Editor’s note: As great as the man maybe, Dr. Paul is both too old and too libertarian to win the GOP nomination, and certainly not in the general election against a sitting president.]

  14. FOX NEWS has a way to play the statistical game, by corrupting the incoming data electronically so that those who reported the results will not be accused of lying or have any part of it.
I wonder if I vote “FOR”, will it show it as “Against”?
I haven’t voted yet but I did see the questions and noticed the majority is “Against” anything that has to do with medical marijuana or legalization of marijuana, and it’s growing in numbers.
FOX NEWS is the joke that started it all.

  15. There may be a natural delay in processing the data for display. It has been just a few minutes and I have just saw a positive change on the outcome on questioning federal drug issues on marijuana. FOX NEWS can still ignore it.

  16. Honestly it has everything to do with money these days. Without a grass-roots movement I can’t imagine cannabis ever being legitimately regulated like alcohol. On the other hand, I can’t possible see how we would go another 100 years neglecting the human population for one of the safest substances on Earth. Money, money, money. That’s what we need, and not much will happen until then! Millions. It’s possible though.

  17. Marijuana issue had 400 plus votes yesterday. I look today—less than 40. REPUBLICANS are afraid to even visit the subject of marijuana?????????????

  18. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18404144 – study 2008
Cannabinoid deficiency in migraine, fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome.
Right there, straight from a major pharmaceutical company [GW], that MARIJUANA (e.g. DOPE, WEED, GRASS, POT) has MEDICINAL value. Maybe even medicinal REQUIREMENT. There’s no fucking reason for this DEA bullshit. No fucking reason.

  19. @Chris #18.
There was definitely a problem with the voting system yesterday. I voted again today, and it actually counted.
When NORML’s Facebook post had 100+ likes, but there was less than 25 votes on the YouTube question, obviously something was visibly wrong. I don’t think it was a marijuana related issue, however, as the voting system wasn’t working on any of the other questions I tested.

  20. in response to Extreme559
Yes I would say Ron Paul would make a good 12th Doctor, however he is not going to win nomination let alone election.
Best thing to do is prepare to use nullification a lot more than anyone has in the past though that will be “voted” illegal in a few years. Course as soon as the “social majority” being censoring the internet and what people are allowed to say about anything (much more than currently occurs) voting will be a way of the past and we will all have to just accept the flow, for as long as their are things to keep the mind of good people silent or distracted there will be this global government.

  21. I voted for, Obama . I don’t want to see him in office again . I don’t want to see, Romney or the republican Goovernor ( forgot his name ) win either and that’s for sure . Texas is hard on Pot smokers . You can easily do time behind bars for a few cannabis seeds and Romney has already expressed his
disbelief that medical marijuana has any medicinal value . He is outraged to even think marijuana
    should be legal .
This Country is being run by Corporations & lobbyists and i believe that will undoubtably lead to this Countries downfall .

  22. The site still seems to not be recording votes, cannabis related or not. Is it even real, or is Fox just going to ask the questions that they told the guy “monitoring” the votes to artificially inflate?

  23. Ron Paul 2012!
[Editor’s note: If you’re going to be a political daydreamer, why not Tinkerbell, Bigfoot or Mickey Mouse? All have a better chance of being elected president of America than Ron Paul.]

  24. # 33 Tom THANK YOU!!! Exactly my experience.
    # 18 Chris THIS IS A FUCKIN WAR!!!!!!!! We have been too passive in the last 40 years. Shit, if I mentioned what we really should be doing, I’d get tosssed off here in a fucking heartbeat, as I have been warned numerous times.
I resent you characterization of me.
Furthermore, Fox News has consolidated all of the voters posts from 1255 pages to 2 on the video page, and 19 on all others. Don’t hand me that bullshit about paranoia.

  25. Ummmm Hello? it’s 1:40 AM and Fox News JUST DELETED THE NORML VIDEO.
WHO WAS THE ASSHOLE THAT CALLED ME PARANOID, HMMMMM????

  26. With all due respect to the editor, I found your minimimizing the Ron Paul supporters zeal a bit discomforting. Is there a candidate in either major party that you can name that understands and protects personal liberty better than him ? I don’t believe there is …
All political agendas and government ultimately rely on the initiation of force, be they Republican or Democrat. Neither party really protects liberty, instead they put their agenda ahead of your personal freedom.
I’ve done time for a victimless crime (pot), I have a personal stake in legaization and don’t intend to beg any candidate for the privelege of peacefully owning myself. Google my name and find out….
Partisan bickering is funny. It is also sad and misses the point.
I support voluntary peaceful consensual interactions, regardless of political agendas. Isn’t THAT the point? Peace.
[Editor’s note: “With all due respect to the editor, I found your minimimizing the Ron Paul supporters zeal a bit discomforting. Is there a candidate in either major party that you can name that understands and protects personal liberty better than him ?”
No less discomforting than the Ron Paul zealots who try to propagate a non-political, non-partisan webpage with near hourly barrages of full-throated advocacy for a political candidate who possess no chance of winning the GOP nomination, and by extension, would get crushed in a general election, against a sitting president. He is also too old to be a functional president.
Where are the Gary Johnson fanatics as he too, even more so than Dr. Paul supports cannabis law reform (Johnson admits to using cannabis as a younger man for fun and for lawful medical purposes in NM post his Governorship; Dr. Paul has never used cannabis)??
And just because Ron Paul supports ending Cannabis Prohibition, should a citizen vote for him just for this reason? Maybe there are other political positions he (and other Republicans and libertarians) take that in the minds of many cannabis consumers and reform activists are neither popular or present winnable political strategies such that his position on cannabis is mitigated.
Should a citizen in the US be a single issue voter? Does that make any sense considering the complexity of the nation and governing?
Even NORML recognizes that reforming cannabis laws is not the single most important criteria that should determine support for any political candidate.
No one likes fanatics….and the Ron Paul fanatics need to take their overly idealistic advocacy and ‘rah-rah-rah’ somewhere else lest their blog comments (really, advertisements) start to be deleted as ‘Off Topic’ on NORML’s homepage.
The ubiquitous blog comment ‘Vote for Ron Paul!’ is not a very genuine or realistic supposed commentary to anything seriously grounded in real politics….it is more like being a participant in a fantasy sports league.]

  27. Video was reinstated sometime after 8AM this morning and the video response pages jumped from only 2 to presently 43.
HOWEVER – votes ate still not being counted. The NORML video had 54 replies last night and only had 54 when it was reinstated this morning.
It’s not just the marijuana questions – it’s happening on other questions as well.
Sorry for the outbust earlier. Been off my weed for a week and a half. I get a little grouchy.

  28. #40 Owen
Yup, I’m pretty sure the count has been reset since I voted yesterday. And magically, my vote isn’t counting again today. I’ve tried on two different YouTube accounts with two different computers. This is either the biggest malfunctioning of YouTube ever, or a huge scam set up by Fox (which in itself doesn’t make sense because there are some pro-marijuana sentiments on Fox – Judge Napolitano for example). Who knows…?

  29. WTF it wont count my vote either. God FOX is so fucking biased. I bet that number would be up to 1000 by now if it recorded a single persons vote. I think they just preordained the number of votes to stay at 75.

  30. The editors note to the recent post regarding Ron Paul has left me a little disturbed. I am a Ron Paul supporter, but I have been a NORML reader, donator and supporter for years.
“No less discomforting than the Ron Paul zealots who try to propagate a non-political, non-partisan webpage with near hourly barrages of full-throated advocacy for a political candidate who possess no chance of winning the GOP nomination, and by extension, would get crushed in a general election, against a sitting president. He is also too old to be a functional president.”
As an editor you should probably do you best to not alienate your supporters. People see things in Ron Paul that they havent seen in other candidates in years, and this is the reason that he turns otherwise normal people into the “zealots” that you so crudely put it. I know politics gets everyone rattled but please show some respect.
I am beginning to feel unwelcome in an organization and movement with which I have invested so much time and money.
    Justin Henderson
[Editor’s note: Cannabis reformers and consumers are all welcomed at NORML…however, fanatics of ANY political figures are not.
Ron Paul is hardly a new figure in American politics as he has run for president three times…and lost by more than 97% every time. If a person is serious about cannabis law reform, attaching their political wagon to an ‘also ran’ like Ron Paul will set back, not advance political reforms for cannabis as Paul is clearly more an iconoclast than a successful legislator (or presidential candidate).]

  31. I don’t mean to troll here, but I also was a little put off by the editors quick fire marginalization of Ron Paul. Now to be fair, I agree that the constant “Ron Paul 2012” types of posts do nothing to contribute to a discussion in these comments sections and they often appear to be outright spam. Therefore I sympathize with the editor’s frustrations. However, if the moderators wish to eliminate political support on these boards, why couldn’t they just create a policy that would communicate such rules? Why not just prevent posting any comments that violate such rules regarding support of political candidates? But that raises other questions. Specifically, would limited speech about politics in the comments section help or hinder the ultimate goal of marijuana law reform? Where will the line be drawn to divide speech “about” a candidate and speech “in support of” a candidate?
I fear the editors are very close to alienating a large section of their very own supporters here. I hope that does not happen, but I myself cannot help but feel a little less welcome here knowing that the editor has bashed my chosen candidate twice, not in statistical, factual fashion, but in rhetorical, sarcastic, mean spirited, and elitist fashion. Please edit mindfully, we cannot afford to be divided.
Now, on the topic of the broken vote counter. My votes were not counted either. Something definately smells fishy, but I would almost bet the farm that FOX would just ignore any marijuana questions voted to the top anyway.
[Editor’s note: Why cater to political delusions or visions of political grandeur that are not only unrealistic, they’re distracting from having to confront political reality? If you don’t want to see editorial comments asking people to re-visit reality, then join NORML in reminding commentators obsessed with Ron Paul to stop wasting time, money and energy on a political candidate who is not going to be elected president under almost any scenario that can be conceived absent every other candidate and the president quitting the race.
Again, the alternative to writing editor’s notes trying to remind Ron Paul acolytes that political reality exists and that NORML’s webpage is not a daily advertising space for their candidate (despite the fact NORML has been a Ron Paul supporter for many years), is to delete the posts as ‘Off Topic’ and there will be no discussion on the page about Paul’s third, and failed, candidacy for president.]

  32. Now they are refusing to post my questions under health care. My questions are :
Why are the drug companies allowed to mark up the prices of their drugs 550,000%, do you think that’s fair and if not, would you support limits?
I tried posting that under “other” as well as “health care”. No post found.
Then I posted under “other” Why are my health care posts not being published? That question stayed up for 5 miutes and was deleted.
WOULD I BE PARANOID IN THINKING THAT THE DRUG COMPANIES ARE FOX NEWS’ BIGGEST SPONSOR?????

  33. why is it legal in 166 states but not in kentucky make it legal in every state we have a happier world and more smiles if we could go to kroger and buy it like tobbacco that shit should be outlawed and weed taxed and legal for the ones that want it it would make money for usa and so many happy people i wish it was legal i voterd for obama and oi vote again if you legal itu will get 4 more years for sure if you dont think so legal it and u go in by land side lol i not jokeing try it if it dont work take it off make it not legal but our country would be better place to livere if it was legal and people would eat more it be better all way around try it please if it dont work u can alway stop it thanks for your time please legal it in ever state not just a few that not fair

  34. They’ll tell us anything we want to hear in order to get elected, and then they’ll do what they please, just like Obama did. Anyone who actively seeks to become an elected official is a born liar. We cannot trust them.

  35. I am another supporter of Norml who is “put off” by the editors comments. If ever there was a time where a longshot candidate like Ron Paul could emerge, it is this election. Let’s face it… There are no viable candidates out there who support MJ reform. IMHO, the editor should support the only candidate who you know would do what he says concerning MJ
[Editor’s note: Would you be put off if NORML started to hype Bullwinkle the Moose or Mickey Mouse for president? Because these characters have as much chance as the current political character ‘Ron Paul’ to become the GOP nominee and/or win the general election.
There are other GOP candidates who support cannabis law reform beyond Paul….Gary Johnson….but, he, like Paul, are not viable presidential candidates according to all available indexes.
Can we get real here and stop the political fantasizing?]

  36. Replying to the Editor’s note about Ron Paul:
I agree that Ron Paul has no shot in winning the 2012 race. I say this as a Ron Paul supporter.
Here’s another reality check I wish to see NORML share with it’s readers: the DEA is not responsible for marijuana being in Schedule I. The DHHS is. The DEA is the enforcement; DHHS are the scientific experts.
Blaming the DEA for Schedule I is a copout. The DHHS recommended in 2006 to NOT reschedule marijuana. Since then, new science has emerged. The only thing the DEA is doing wrong (regarding the Coalition’s case) is failing to ask for an updated, current scientific review of marijuana’s medical value from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Please remind uninformed commenters and readers of this reality check. Thank you!
[Editor’s note: Sure enough! Indeed, DHHS (along with DOJ’s DEA) is empowered under CSA to impact a drug like cannabis’ legal status and classification. It behooves reformers’ efforts to also direct their advocacy for cannabis legalization to the ‘health’ (HHS, NIDA) side along with the more visible and oppositional ‘legal’ (DEA, ONDCP) side of the equation.]

  37. I voted last night and returned to the link tonight to find the question has again disappeared! What is going on?!
Politically speaking, I am a moderate. I live in Massachusetts. I voted for President Obama (D) in 2008 and I voted for Senator Scott Brown (R) in 2010. If Fox News refuses to present this question at the debate, I will no longer watch Fox News.
As of last night, when I voted, the vote count was 131. There appears to be conflicting reports on the vote count, as it appears to have decreased this morning when the question was again temporarily available.
To Fox News: CNN presented the Cannabis question to then Senator Obama in the Youtube debate in 2008. As a moderate and a supporter of reform regarding the current federal laws surrounding Cannabis, I strongly urge Fox News to present this question at the Fox News Google Debate.

  38. UPDATE ON FOX YOUTUBE POLL:
Now they won’t post ANY OF MY QUESTIONS.
    This was the latest rejection:
“House Speaker John Boehner, a drug addict, is against the legalization of marijuana. I thought drug addicts were a detriment to society. As House Speaker, he has been a detriment to the country. Why do we allow drug addicts to become House Speaker?”

  39. So if watching violence on TV doesn’t promote violence, then why can’t we allow the display of cannabis consumption or penis and breasts? It’s OK to watch someone get murdered (which isn’t typically accepted by society, except in self-defense which effectively decriminalizes murder), but if we someone pop out boobs (which we’re encouraged to do by our biological nature) should be…of all things…CENSORED in AMERICA? Fucked up.

  40. Asking most of these guys where they stand on this issue is dangerous ground. First off everyone already knows, second most of the responses will be negative, but will receive many cheers from the conservative audience, which I believe will strengthen support against any kind of legalization, and hurt the two candidates that support it. I can just imagine the millions of shaking heads at home viewing wondering why they even asked that stupid question. Not the right place to pick a fight.

  41. The fact that cannabis questions are either gone or have a ridiculously low vote count (barely above that of 3 days ago) says to me that this whole thing is fake, rigged. I bet there will be exactly zero questions regarding cannabis asked. I will be disgusted, but not surprised at all.

  42. I just voted and there are 647 for. I see VOTE RON PAUL! on all the blogs, I watched him in the R’s debate, and he doesn’t have what it takes. They are all politicians first and none of them are going to break ranks on this issue. If the guy we voted for isn’t going to make the change, none of the current crop of wannabes is going to break ranks. Perry is scary.

  43. Although I understand the sentiments of all the Ron Paul supporters who are “put off” by the editors’ comments, I also understand the editors’ responses. I believe Mr. Paul is a genuinely nice human being. However, aside from also believing he has a snowball’s chance of winning, I, for one, am completely “put off” by most of his other views.
Although he has rarely voiced it lately (doesn’t want the light shining on him too brightly apparently) he seems to advocate a return to discrimination–racial, religious and otherwise–as long as it’s PRIVATE businesses doing the discriminating. He’s mentioned (like his son) that he’s against GOVERNMENT discrimination–can’t have GOVERNMENT discriminating– but has no problem allowing private businesses to refuse to serve someone based on race, creed, color, religion or whatever other criteria. (Is that the “freedom” we always hear about in America?)
We already fought the civil rights battles in the ’60s and ’70s, and finally joined most of the civilized world in ending many forms of discrimination. I don’t want to go back to those bad old days. If we ever do return to apartheid, we’ll just be fighting that fight again and again and again. Is that the sort of country you REALLY want to live in?
BTW,for those who think it’s no big deal to be refused service–and the people who usually do the refusing rarely give a reason, but instead quickly threaten to call the police–never forget, history has a way of changing, and one day it just might be YOU who is the one being refused.
Like eating out at that Chinese restaurant? You see a black couple sitting over there; and over there is a hispanic family. But when you walk up to the counter, the man says, “Sir, you have to leave!”
You look around in confusion. “Why?”
“Sir, leave, or I’ll call the police!”
That’s the way it usually goes.
In short, I would never vote for a Mussolini just to have the “trains running on time.” It’s a case of the cure being worse than the disease.

  44. Okay, I just searched and could not find your question anywhere in “Social Issues” category! This is B.S.
Also, to the Editor, you are way off base about Ron Paul. He is electable, his popularity is growing every day and although he has not received alot of votes in the past, a large part of the independent/Republican base are starting to agree with his ideas now about limiting the Federal government. Furthermore, unless you want to be saying, “President Perry” after the 2012 election you should change your tune. Obama is a fake and a liar. Even the most liberal of my friends are registering to vote in the Republican primaries for Ron Paul to ensure he is the (R) running against Obama. Peace!
[Editor’s note: NORML is both a long term supporter of Rep. Paul and is a non-partisan organization. Analytically speaking, Ron Paul is both too old and too unelectable to win either the GOP nomination or in a general election against a sitting president. Historically, members of the House don’t get elected president and theirs are usually vanity campaigns to draw attention to themselves and the issues they care about.
While it does not appear that either Paul or Johnson are getting much traction in the GOP race to date, it behooves cannabis law reform efforts that libertarian-leaning candidates like Paul and Johnson are pursuing the GOP nomination.]

  45. Linking this article to a Fox News related YouTube site is both insulting to the intelligence of the people here and a slap in the face towards our goal. How can you be unbiased about this issue when Fox is consistently one-sided? And it’s not OUR side either. This is rather embarrassing. Imo, Fox “Views” and NORML shouldn’t even be used in the same context as one another.

  46. Although I am very happy to see prospective presidential candidates supporting our cause it is quite obvious that they are using Marijuana prohibition as a way to get single issue voters to vote for them.
I Support their cause in marijuana reform but let us all realize that this is not the only issue that is important in a candidate.
Questions should ask about their support of the HR2306 bill.

  47. Its one day before this debate and all the marijuana related questions are gone from the list for voting? Someone tell me why? A week ago there were several marijuana law reform questions and now none. How corupt are these people, NORML come on cant we do something?

  48. I recieved my Congressional reps response, for him to support decriminilization. Dr Tom Price informed me, that he works for all people interests in his district.
I guess the folks of atlanta don’t smoke pot or do any of the other items that trans-ship through atlanta. We are one of the leaders in narco trafficing. Thus, the K-9 units stationed in and out of the metero area along the interstates.

  49. Gary Johnson and Ron Paul are your the only guys you should consider if this is issue as important as I think it is. And remember, when Gary Johnson ran for governor of NM, noone gave him an ice cube’s chance in hell of winning. Watch the debate tonight, he is finally back in. It will be nice to have two pro-cannabis candidates on stage at the same time.
As for Obama? Fuhgedaboutit. He has shown himself to be a total hypocrite.

  50. I watched about 3/4 of the debate. Saw no cannabis related questions and assume none were asked at all. Disgusted but not surprised at all.

  51. The editor is right…End of story guys and gals. Reality is what it is. I commend NORML for their blog policies as it is better to throw in those editor’s notes then deleting off topic comments like “Vote for my candidate” which always includes much more than ending Cannabis prohibition. Period

  52. I sent one of the HB Petition to my state Rep. Chaffetz, in Utah. He sent me an email back that said marijuana has no know medical uses and therefor would not support any changes in law….go figure. You can bet Huntsman and Romney think the same.
