President Obama: End Your War on Cannabis Patients

Over the past several months, the Federal government escalated its war against medical marijuana to previously unseen heights. The Drug War machine kicked into high gear starting in October when the IRS began applying an obscure part of the US tax code, meant to target drug cartels, against medical dispensaries in attempts to shut them down. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms joined in the fight when it issued a heavy handed one page memo to every gun and ammunition dealer nationwide informing them that they must, by law, deny sales to lawful medical cannabis patients.

The hammer really fell when the US Attorneys for the four federal districts in California formally announced a crackdown on medical marijuana dispensing operations and began issuing memos threatening operators and landlords of these properties. Threats were even waged against news publications who ran advertisements for medical marijuana businesses. All of this in an environment where over 70% of Americans support medical use of cannabis, the country’s largest physicians group endorsed full legalization, and at least four governors are petitioning the DEA to reclassify marijuana based on overwhelming evidence of its medicinal value. Unfortunately, It doesn’t appear an end is in sight as new threats of intervention are looming in Colorado.

That is why today, in cooperation with other reform organizations, NORML is encouraging you to contact President Obama and tell him to end his administrations war on cannabis patients.  Click here to use NORML’s Take Action Center to directly email the below letter to the White House and tell President Obama to stand by his promise to not interfere with state medical marijuana laws.

Dear President Obama:
I urge you to end your war on medical marijuana patients. More than 70 percent of Americans are in favor of legal medical marijuana. 16 states and the District of Columbia have passed medical marijuana legislation.
At least four governors are petitioning the DEA to reclassify marijuana based on overwhelming evidence that it has medicinal value. While this reclassification is pending, your Administration should respect — not attack –state medical marijuana laws that provide patients with safe and reliable access to this medicine.
Given the fiscal crisis our country finds itself in, it doesn’t make sense to waste federal tax dollars and law enforcement resources interfering with state medical marijuana laws.

  2. Stop wasting the tax payers dollars on a “War” that will never be won. In fact, while you are at it. Just LEGALIZE Cannabis for everybody and save our money so we can have more in our pockets to help with this hideous economy. Concentrate on the REAL drugs like Meth, Cocaine, etc.

  3. I suggest a national speak up day on 4/20/12 and peaceful protest at every state capital similar to the Occupy Wall St. movement. Do it now so this cannot be avoided in the 2012 Presidential Debates! Get off the couch and DO SOMETHING!!

  4. If they (the Government) make it legal to grow, package, smoke and possess but illegal to sell not even for a penny or to recoup cost, it takes the crime out of it. It diffuses the whole thing. Everyone who wanted to smoke would simply grow their own, either in or out. Or a real collective situation would arise. MJ would no longer burden our prisons, our police, our courts or our taxes. Home Depot would have classes. Not a perfect world but better.

  5. Why can’t our government respect the wishes of 70% of its citizens?
This is a country where democracy rules (at least that is what I was taught in school) why dose it not work that way? Stop listening to the drug co. lobbyist and LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE OF THE U.S.A. We all know why it’s illegal ….MONEY! D.E.A. can find other ways to do their jobs. Locking up otherwise law abiding citizens is unjust, unfair and in my eyes dose more harm than good.
    Sincerely,
    Mr. Richard Pisz Sr

  6. Obama doesn’t care what the people who voted for him want. He has made that crystal clear. Less than a year to go before he is voted out of office. I just hope its not Newt Gingrich that takes his place.

  7. Nothing can change his mind unless your able to give him more money ( political contributions ) than pharmaceutical, oil, tobacco and the alcohol industry has . Bribing used to be illegal but now have you ever heard of a politician being jailed for accepting a bribe ?

  8. This type of governmental inflexibility will only help to push the cause for legalization. This is exactly how alcohol prohibition came to an end almost a hundred years ago. These are the death throes of American cannabis prohibition.

  9. Keep running the economy into the ground until cannabis is legalized.
If 2012 rolls around, and the Republicans get the presidency, still keep running the economy into the ground until cannabis is legalized.
It’s about people more than politics. It’s about people more than profit of the drugs cartels.

  10. Why are all of you even wasting time on this topic with Obama? Really? He openly mocked and laughed at us when he first got into office and had those online questions (Top 9 I think were abt legalizing weed). Where is all the talk about Ron Paul? You know the guy that actually will legalize it and actually has a good shot at winning not only the nomination, but beating Obama. That should be the focus. Vote Ron Paul in the primaries to get him the GOP nominee and we will see him beat Obama and legalize it. Stop wasting your time on Obama. Its just falling on deaf ears.
    RON PAUL 2012

  11. The US Drug Laws and the people who support and enforce them represent Crimes Against Humanity. The death, suffering, incarceration and waste of resources all represent one of the great Crimes Against Humanity in history. The President, DOJ, House, Senate and Drug Czar should be brought up on charges in a World court and be tried for crimes against humanity.
Contact your representative today and ask them if they support the deaths, pain and waste of taxpayer dollars caused by the US drug laws. If they do, vote them out.
Write to leaders of other countries like Mexico who suffer as a result of US prohibition and urge the to bring charges against US leaders for Crimes Against Humanity for not legalizing a plant and ending the suffering caused by the US drug laws.

  12. For 35 years now our Federal government has provided 4 American citizens every month with tin canisters containing 300 University of Mississippi grown cannabis cigarettes.
Our federal government also allows the pharmaceutical company Unimed(and others associated with Unimed) to profit millions of dollars from Marinol which is an extremely scientifically processed form of THC used for Aids and cancer patients. Marinol has been patented and profitable for the company since 1992.
Yet we. The American people. Are subject to prison, persecution, harassment, discrimination, and plain old bullying from the very government that is supposed to protect our sovereign rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
When President Nixon put together a commission to see what steps he should take on the question of his stance on cannabis. His commission called The Shafer Commission came back with the study that none of the reasons cannabis was made illegal in the first place stand up to the truth of the plant or the science behind it and that they didn’t feel Americans should be arrested for something citizens want to do in the privacy of our homes.
Nixon disregarded the helpful insight and set out a full scale war on cannabis which we have been waging ever since.
With information so blatantly available to all. It is a disgrace to live in a time where our current governmental administration continues to follow the most unhealthy path of unjust laws undermining the entire structure of our freedom. Yet our government will allow the destruction of our society with promotion of alcohol and chemically enhanced cancer sticks(cigarettes) and any pharmaceutical drug approved by the FDA no matter the side affects of DEATH!
DEATH the only thing you CAN NOT attain from ingesting cannabis no matter which way you like it.
The question is no longer how long we will have to wait before our government will allow us to have this special and beloved plant cannabis? But when will we the American people take a stand for our deepest well know truths, rights and justices denied us by the 21st century politics of more talk and more laws?
Now all the government officials in states that have medicinal cannabis are fighting to get the upper hand with fees more fees more fees and territories to profit from the plant they all see as a gold mine for themselves and those with clout in the system.
America. What are we to do? There seems to be no end to the injustices perpetrated on our citizens by our very own government because of a harmless plant. America. How can we really end this crazy situation we’ve let get so out of hand?

  13. I am an underemployed American. I constantly search Craigslist for part time work. I’m willing to do cleaning jobs.
MOST of the jobs I look into require pre employment drug screening.
    For what?
Are you, Mr. Potential Employer(paid off by the government in the form of a tax break), really and truly concerned that the joint I ADMITTEDLY smoked yesterday or last week is seriously, logically going to have some sort of effect on my potential job performance TODAY????
    REALLY??????????????????????????????????????????????
Or is it more likely that I have broken an unjust and immoral law and nothing detrimental to the world happened as a result of my breaking this unjust and immoral law AND THAT YOU HAVE TO MAKE AN EXAMPLE OUT OF ME??????
I am starting a NEW CAMPAIGN TODAY and I hope you will all join me.
This takes VERY LITTLE TIME & WORK. I do this EVERY DAY!!!!!
Log into Craigslist. Look for a job that requires pre employment drug testing. Reply to the job posting with your own personalized lecture on why pre employment drug testing is wrong in every way and on every levl.

Get the message out there that as long as booze is legal, discrimination based on private drug use will not be tolerated.

  14. Why can’t we just petition the government to unschedule cannabis? According to the Bill of Rights that is an option.

  15. Why dont you guys throw your support behind congressman Ron Paul? He will end the drug war and has spoken about it may times. He believes the federal government should butt out of states rights on social issues completely. He believes in the power of hemp and that weed should be treated like alcohol. RON PAUL 2012
[Editor’s note: FYI — Non-profit organizations like NORML, DPA, DRCNet, ASA, MPP, etc…can’t legally endorse or provide support to elected candidates or parties. NORML has a Political Action Committee (PAC), but it is non-partisan and to date has not made a presidential endorsement.]

  16. Ever wonder who law enforcement will lock up, if or once, cannabbis is legal. Maintaining the status quo is in several organizations’ interest! I will not mention names, but the advents on the right side of the page driving people tp attorneys is an excellent indication.

  17. What is that thing called, that which, the government promised to former african-american slaves for being subjected to inequality. Well, I believe, people should start sueing for just that reason. I have been unjustly discriminated, persecuted, proseccuted, you name it, all of the above. I need compensated for all the BS the governmnet has put me through. I need an attorney that is willing to stick up for me and my rights, without greedily wanting something in return.

  18. If those who make the laws refuse to listen to consensus or reason, why should we abide by their laws in the first place?

  19. As much as I want to send this email it makes a me a little nervous that my name, address, and email are required.

  20. How difficult would it be to have tobacco farmers who are in jeopardy of losing their farms due to decreased tobacco usage switch over to becoming hemp and cannabis cultivators? Talk about “Green Jobs…” Farmers in the 1800s used to be MANDATED by the federal government to grow hemp.

  21. i think we are doing excellent people. although theres some signs of negativity in our movement i believe the mainstream population is really taking a shift on the issue of cannabis and i believe a big reason is alot of really intelligent people are starting to shed light on the issue of cannibas and as a result people are learning more about this once mysterious, benign, all natural plantlife and its benefits. im really thankful to norml and all of their hard work. i feel as if your efforts put hands in really dark places to pull good people out of bad situations and thats the kind of stuff that really makes this world a better place. thank you norml.

  22. I agree with Joshua Schreiber as well as Melissa Bell. The real problems are the users of alcohol, meth, Cocaine and tobacco. I feel my rights are being depleted as an American. I feel like this government
Has become a total failure especially after the completion of Ronald Regan’s term . I believe in medical marijuana and harvesting within one’s property. We must stand up and flight against those who has revenues to bribe the Government. I think we should bring back the WIG and utilize our votes and
Knowledge to obtain the labeling of products: Made in the USA. Perhaps then we can honestly say we are securing our future.

  23. It’s about alot more than a buzz. Of the three we have to choose from Dr Paul will draw more votes from the other sides. They’re corruption and treason is so great they can’t hide the truth. They are the cartel.
This coming year might be the last chance at freedom.
It’s actually up to us norml’s to vote for the best chance for our membership. Hope he’s got 4-8 years left in him. rotflmao

  24. Why don’t we sue the federal government? For Crimes Against Humanity?I lost a 60k a year job, was unemployed for a year, damn near lost everything, got to wait 3yrs and maybe might be rehire-able for another CDL job?Now i make 22k-24k a year, for smoking Marijuana, and having a bad UA really! The unconstitutional treatment of American people needs to end, lets take it to the big courts and the media. We the people need Retribution…

  25. When I was a young boy,(many years ago),one of my classes in High School was typing. Not that I benefited a great deal from learning how to type, but I do recall a few of the things that I learned beside a,s,d,f j k l ;,which are the start keys for hand movement on the keyboard. There was a sentence we learned to exercise our key strokes, and that sentence really has meaning today, I think.
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.
We are going to have to physically wrestle with the politicians and corporate geeks to get them to understand the harm that they are causing Americans by Urine testing for pot, making it extremely difficult to find employment, get an education, feed a family.
Making sick people have to score their medicine from a street dealer is a crime, and the DEA and the Obama administration should be legally held responsible.
People in this country being put in jail for cannabis is a crime.
People in Asia being used for slave labor on drug charges is a crime.
People in countries like Russia and Iran being executed on drug charges is a crime.
Governments of the World lack any kind of Wisdom when it comes to cannabis, and the citizens of the world are suffering.
Science and the logical evidence that many years of usage, should outweigh all the ages old propaganda that the American gov spews.
LEAVE NO AUTHORITY EXISTING NOT RESPONSIBLE TO THE PEOPLE. Thomas Jefferson

  26. start by putting some clean cut people on that drugs wars show on discovery…the more we keep showing fuck heads on tv that smoke herb…the world will never change their opinion. what do you expect??? it’s ridiculous these burnouts pot shows put on tv…find some business looking potheads to show…it’ll help trust me

  27. You claim to have 70% popular support, over 25% of the states on board and we still command less political respect than the National Association of Mosquito Breeders. Maybe I’m crazy ( I look at this world and wonder every day) but is being non political really the best way to reach a political goal.

  28. Marijuana is a Class I narcotic. By the DEA’s own system, it IS already among the hardest drugs. Therefore, it’s impossible for marijuana to lead to a “harder” drug! If marijuana was a gateway drug, then it might lead to “softer” drugs, like meth, cocain, or the opiates.
    ISN’T THAT RIDICULOUS?!

  29. “Given the fiscal crisis our country finds itself in, it doesn’t make sense to waste federal tax dollars and law enforcement resources interfering with state medical marijuana laws.”
I couldn’t have said it any better.
@30 Nathan: You are correct. Respect for the law works both ways.

  30. Because Obama changed his tune about Cannabis so quickly, I wonder if the powerfully political DEA sat him down, and basically told him, this is the way it’s going to be. That’s the stick. The carrot was Holder’s memo to lay off the raids.
Obama is almost as bad as Nixon concerning Cannabis. I recently found out that a new politcal party has started up. It’s called the Justice Party (economic-social and environmental justice).
What I’ve read about them on their web-site appeals to me. However, I dont know what their stand is on Cannabis.
Has anybody noticed when a shooting occurs that militarized police show up in force. Pretty soon drones will be in everybody house listening and watching. If they find what they like the whole ‘homeland security’ operators militarized to the hilt will be outside waiting to barge in. Dont they consider Cannabis part of the war on terror also?
It is getting down right scary this encrouching police state.

  31. NORML’s PAC should officially endorse Ron Paul!!! He is the only candidate who will actually change and reform drug laws in this country!
[Editor’s note: NORML and the NORMLPAC are non-partisan (NORML is a diverse group made up of conservatives, liberals, libertarians, greens, independents, etc…, so it does not engage in partisan politics, nor does it need to effect positive law reforms). Also, Ron Paul is not the only GOP candidate to support reform as Fred Karger and Gary Johnson do too.]
