Im donating again since I am part of the group who partake of Cannabis both for Pain relief but also as a recreational user since 1969 also a paying member of this very nessesary cause . I just returned from a wonderful vacation in the UP of Michigan ,White sand beach Beautiful fresh water of Lake Superior but best part of my trip was as my wife an I were leaving the house we stayed in with friends along the road leaving I saw something that shocked me it was a hiway adoption sign and the next three miles was sponcered by the local Norml chapter I slammed brakes did a U turn went back and felt my heart swell with pride so got out and my wife took several Picts of sign and me in it pointing and grinning . My point is being from Texas where very little public really no public signs would ever say that but then I thought WHYNOT I would love be the poster child for this cause in my state as a retired auto worker I have the time and can’t think of a better way to spend it than pickin up trash plant trees flowers whatever to beatify a 3 mile stretch of hiway here . What are people’s thoughts on this idea make the place we live more pleasing to the eye and pay omage to this wonderful cause let people know we are all basically the same human beings forget race religion heritage just human beings trying to make a difference in our world make it a better place than it was when we got here u know to our Children’s childrens children ie Moody Blues like I said retired I’m old
i am very much excited about proposed reforms in these states! however, i have a question as to how the application of these laws will suffice against federal laws. certainly, medical marijuana contradicts federal laws, as that law reads “…no currently accepted medical uses…” and yet medical marijuana continues to grow across our nation. My question is this. Whats to stop our federal govt from using the Supremacy Clause to override a state law that allows recreational use in direct conflict with federal statute? Cant the fed mandate colorado judges to enforce federal supremacy? Perhaps i am ignorant as to how states may act independantly of what the federal govt mandates. i dont want to rain on anyones parade as i strongly support cannabis legalization.
[Paul Armentano responds: States have the ability to amend their marijuana possession laws and eliminate criminal penalties. It is highly unlikely that the federal government will use its power to enforce federal law in this regard. It is possible that were a state like Colorado to enact a state licensed system of regulating the distribution of cannabis for all adults that the Feds would intervene. To date, in some states with such an existing system for the distribution of medical marijuana — like in Maine and New Mexico — the federal government has taken no such action. Thanks for your insight about my question Paul. What youve really gotta wonder though, after decades of prohibition, is why the fed still persists to keep such a safe and popular recreational drug illegal when the costs of enforcing the law outweigh any supposed benefits of prohibition. Its probably all about politics in the end, but im passionate about reform as more and more people across our nation are. I think we’ve gotta start somewhere, and when people see how a regulated system can work so much better than prohibition, we’re sure to win the peoples hearts. I think Obama has ramped up attacks against honorable dispensaries in California as a way of getting the nation to throw out these laws without him having to spend any of his personal influence on it. All he has to do is hide behind the law and stupid Rebublicans currently stopping any and all reform and they catch most of the blame. He’s using us like pawns; what a shithead.
My impression about state vs federal law is:
If a state legalizes Marijuana, the state can not prosecute and the Feds can. I don’t believe that states can be forced to use their funds to capture, prosecute and incarcerate anybody.
The Feds could withold federal funds given to states it the state did not do what the Feds want them to do. Kind of like when President Carter stopped funds for state highways unless they abided by the 55 mph speed limit. Carter was before his time. His policy’s about energy independence if implimented back when he was president would have been very good.

The Federal and state governments both will increase the amount of money they get, by legalizing it. Instead of granting money to State’s to irradicate Marijuana. The money could help to boost the economy also.

I love that states right movement that marijuana reform has opened so many peoples eyes to but wouldn’t it be more productive to attack the head of the beast, the federal regulation against pot in the first place. Because getting more and more influence from supporting states is great but if the fed’s can cut off all funds to states with pro marijuana laws tomorro if they wanted to whats the point.
I hate that marijuana is still illegal in most states and cigarettes and alcohol are legal everywhere! It has so many benefits and uses too – we are crazy not to use it! I am a republican voter who supports NORML, and will donate to the cause of legalization!
