Nearly fifteen years after the release of “Because I Got High”- a song well known for poking fun at overzealous reefer madness rhetoric – Afroman is ready to jump headfirst back into the marijuana limelight. Only this time, as an advocate for legalization.
The grammy nominated artist recently teamed up with NORML and Weedmaps to launch a remake of his hit song, turning the hip hop classic into a positive legalization anthem for the 2014 elections. The remix is a new and entertaining way to drive the narrative surrounding the benefits of cannabis law reform, as well as the medical benefits of the plant itself. With election day right around the corner, his latest project is geared towards keeping up the momentum for all the marijuana law reform efforts taking place across the country, and especially upcoming ballot initiatives.
On November 4th, two states and the District of Columbia will be voting to legalize marijuana, and Florida will be voting on a medical marijuana amendment. The timing couldn’t have been better to take, and remake the canna-cult classic. The 2014 version of “Because I Got High” not only challenges old stereotypes, it also seeks to build support and enthusiasm for the three measures proposing to create a regulated pot market for adults, age 21 and over.
Through digital engagement, this song pushes an important political message to a younger, social media savvy voting block, energizing the demographic known to be the among the biggest supporters of ending marijuana prohibition. From glaucoma to funding school construction, the song highlights many of the social, medical and economic benefits of legalization in a fun and informative way.
“NORML is thrilled to have brought Weedmaps and Afroman together to create this unique cultural collaboration merging art, entertainment, and activism into a single campaign that highlights many of the positive benefits of cannabis, and raises awareness for for the legalization initiatives coming up in the 2014 November elections,” said NORML Director of Strategic Partnerships Sabrina Fendrick.

The trolls can’t do anything about this great contribution by Afroman.
As a very new medical user, I’m happy to lend my support to this cause wherever I can.

The first time I smoked Cannabis I knew it would always be apart of my life. Sparing you all the long story of my life let me say that Cannabis has brought an end to the things that make life unbearable and replaced them with joy and peace. I owe my life to this plant as do so many others. The song is perfectly timed for the upcoming elections. Good luck to all.
The first one before the remake, wasn’t really that negative. It was a wise choice to stay home and enjoy the high with a big smile. The mind expands at a good pace during a pleasant high.
That is easily the greatest thing ever
Thank you, Afroman! The Super Bowl ought to pay you to do this song in the halftime show.
Hmm, the song is nice, but I don’t know about that couch thing. It’s a little too suggestive of the couch potato stereotype. The words were spot on though!
Thanks Afroman! I suffer from severe ptsd and panic attacks. I was on prescriptions for years and decided to switch to medicinal mj. I have literally not had a severe episode in a year and I’m not a complete zombie the way I was on the pills.
wow that really was awesome! I liked the original but this version is str8 to the point and hilarious!! Great redo Afroman!!
PCUCAMP says THANK YOU AFROMAN!!!
PCUCAMP is a pro-marijuana organization that is launching in November (on THANKSGIVING!!!)

Afroman is lame he hates on weed in his song callin potheads lazy. I don’t see how he’s an advocate at all people like him have spawned the comparison of pot to heroin. http://www.drugsense.org/dpfca/ElectionGuideNov2014.html
Timely remake, thanks for the smiles and spot on reflection. Cannabis is a medication even if the feds say marijuana is not.
Why Cannabis is Illegal and Medical Marijuana Laws are Not real freedom
1) Some people have very little knowledge of the plant and are therefore irrationally scared of it. Only about 15 – 30 % of people actually use cannabis so those who don’t haven’t cared about the rights of others enough to change these hypocritical unjust laws for DECADES ! And those hypocrites who oppose cannabis freedom do nothing to make the destructive hard drug alcohol illegal and neither prescription drugs and tobacco products.
2) They like to lock people up and have an easy reason to do so scarrring people’s records with misdemeanors and felonies trying to make life harder for people.
3) Evil people don’t want the masses to have the medical benefits of cannabis and its cannabinoids and to be healthy.
4) Cannabis hemp provides an alternative via bio fuels, cannabis oils, and many other products therefore reducing the need for crude oil and creating competition to petroleum products.
5) Prohibition produces an underground monopoly on cannabis providing higher prices, bigger profits, and fewer competition to the cartels that sell it.
6) Prohibition provides big business for private prisons, lawyers, attorneys, police, judges, politicians, etc. Evil people enforcing evil unjust laws.
7) Medical Marijuana Laws are Not real freedom. It is Fake Freedom and it creates another form of monopoly through money made on yearly doctor visit fees and cannabis card license renewals. They also limit who can sell it and where, sometimes making people travel long distances to purchase some grand cannabis bud. Also, making someone ask permission and pay money for a natural God-given right to grow and use Cannabis is wrong and unamerica. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and many others grew acres of cannabis. Would these people SWAT team their houses, harm their families, kill their dogs, and take them to prison today ?
God has given us Every Plant bearing seed and Every Tree, he causeth the grass to grow for the cattle and the herb for the service of man.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Forgive and you will be forgiven.
It’s time for people to stop being afraid of plants.
Legalize Cannabis Freedom !

Since being diagnosed with DYSTONIA, which is a cousin to Parkinson’s, I still have to eat pain pills all dang day even after injections of botox. I don’t need any of them if I can find Ms. Mary Jane. WAKE UP AMERICA this stuff is a natural cure for many things.
This is a wonderful song and I hope it becomes a number 1 hit and the tune rattles around in everyone’s head for a long time.
Pot helps me with my dysphoria.
