First-Ever Nationwide Pro-Marijuana TV Ad Campaign Is Launched in Conjunction with '4/20'

Boulder, Colorado: I have every reason to believe that ‘4/20’ in 2009 will be the biggest and most momentous one to date as NORML launches 7,770 nationwide TV ads that advocate for cannabis law reform; NORML expects record numbers of supporters to join the organization for the celebratory one-day price of $4.20 because, I believe, there is a palpable zeitgeist in America right now favoring reform; the Obama administration appears amenable to some cannabis law reforms in ways that no prior president since Jimmy Carter has embraced; and lastly, with NORML’s nearly 600,000 ‘friends’ on Facebook and nearly 67,000 MySpace, more Americans than ever before who are keen on cannabis can create a viral effect that benefits reform.
Here in Boulder between 10,000-15,000 students and activists are expected to celebrate in what has become the biggest 4/20 event in the world.

Heck, the New York Times has already posted a profile of 4/20 for today’s paper, where they came yesterday for interview and photos to the University of Colorado at Boulder’s National Marijuana Forum. This portends well to what will be an insane day in the media for pro-reform groups like NORML (I’ve already got 35 interviews scheduled…) as I was also asked to pen an essay for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered that I assume will be published today. (UPDATE! Read and comment on Allen’s essay here.)

I dare say we as a country are finally ‘getting it’ regarding the clear and obvious need to reform our misguided cannabis laws.

Thanks to the hundreds of NORML supporters who donated what they could to buy ad time to launch a timely 4/20 ad campaign, you’re the green that keeps NORML all grassroots, all of the time!

Have an enjoyable and safe 4/20 from the staff of NORML!

Legalization: Yes We Can – Jason Druss

Marijuana Advocacy Group Launches TV Campaign on ‘4/20’
The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws Foundation (NORML Foundation) a Washington, D.C.-based advocacy organization, established in 1997, is purchasing advertising time on selective cable outlets to underscore the urgency of decriminalizing cannabis.
The NORML Foundation launched this pro-marijuana ad campaign to create further political pressure on the federal government to recognize 1) the ever-increasing support of Americans who favor cannabis legalization, 2) the clear sea change of cannabis laws that’s been happening at the state level since Californians voted in favor of medicinal access to cannabis in 1996, and 3) to rally cannabis consumers and anti-prohibitionists on April 20, a date on the calendar that has organically become a national day to both publicly celebrate cannabis as well as protest 70 years of prohibition.

The featured ad is the winner of NORML’s recent user-generated-content contest that asks NORML supporters: ‘What would you say to President Obama about legalizing marijuana?’
New Jersey college student and up and coming filmmaker Jason Druss created the winning submission and is the recipient of the contest’s $3,500 cash grand prize after 6500 votes were cast on NORML’s webpage. “It’s time for President Obama to endorse cannabis law reform where it is legally controlled and taxed like alcohol and tobacco products,” stated Jason Druss. “It’s shocking that students can lose out from federal student loans for possessing a few joints, when pot’s been part of the college culture for decades.’

Marijuana, By the Numbers…
Thirteen states (with a population base of 115 million Americans) have decriminalized cannabis possession; thirteen states (with a population base of 75 million Americans) now have medical cannabis laws. Additionally, more states than ever before are debating cannabis law reform, including California and Massachusetts where legalization legislation have been introduced.
Since 1965, over 20 million Americans have been arrested on cannabis-related charges—90% for possession-only; over 900,000 cannabis arrests are expected again this year.

According to numerous survey and polls, approximately 75% of Americans support medical access to cannabis; 73% favor decriminalizing cannabis possession for adults and 42% of Americans support legalizing cannabis.

7,700 NORML Foundation ads are appearing on cable outlets nationwide (with a strong media buy in Ohio) on CNN, CNBC, Fox News Channel, Fuse, FX Networks, G4, MSNBC, CNN’s Headline News and Spike TV.

  1. I have been wondering for the past few weeks when you guys were finally going to launch these ads…and I think it’s awesome that it’s gonna happen on 4/20.
Does anyone know if those stations in the article are the only ones that the ads are going to be on, I thought they had said before they were going to run on ESPN, because that a huge market NORML is potentially missing out on?

  2. Things are really snowballing now! TV commercials?! Seems like leaps and bounds are taken toward decriminalization and legalization every day now! Thank you NORML so much!

  3. Everyone needs to donate now! $4.20 is nothing compared to what can be gained! Imagine freedom!

  4. I can’t wait to see NORML ads running right after those anti-pot ads on my local cable channels.

  5. Great job to NORML and all of the donators…the future looks bright. Lets blow those anti-mj ads out of the water and make our voice so loud they cant ignore…

  6. Woooo0000000!!!! Happy 4 20 everybody! It’s that time of year, people. Lets celebrate in the best way we know how

  7. YES WE CANNABIS
lets keep this up, this is the year we finally get what we have been fighting for!

  8. Amazing news NORML! Can’t wait to see and hear the reactions from everyone. I can feel today will be great already! Let’s end the madness!

  9. Awesome, glad to see the progress this movement is making! Will definitely be joining up today to help support it!

  10. I am stoked that the news is finally discussing this issue. I fully believe reason is on our side of the debate. Legalization is a win win. Billions saved on life damaging possession charges. Billions earned and out of mexican drug cartels. The hypocrisy of outlawing a plant over pills, booze, guns.
We have to force the administration to talk about the issue seriously. A national legalization ‘tea’ party should be held where 100,000 tokers take the streets.

  11. If you really want to get marijuana legalized, you should jump in a time machine and go back and talk some shit with George Washington. He was a bigtime pothead. Last time I talked with him, he said that this country was a conspiracy created by the man to attack eastern philosophy by eradicating putinistic realities. Does this sound like a bunch of bullshit to you? Well, it is. And that is exactly like what you fucking retarded stoners sound like when you try to have a conversation with people. Yeah, this is what I want: a whole country full of people who don’t bathe or cut their hair and smell like dirt – yet somehow seem to think they have a superior understanding of the world than everyone else on the planet. Bunchof fucking idiots.

  12. I have spread this video to people everywhere. I think everyone needs to see it, and I am very excited that you guys even got fox news to run it. BRAVO.
I wonder what the grandparents will think when Bill O’reily is on and this Norml Ad pops up on there tv.

  13. Dude… All things considered, it’s an amazing thing, to be alive today. Marijuana prohibition is the Berlin Wall of East Berlin. Why not? I believe you’ll be opening more eyes than you know with this campaign. God bless it.

  14. Also, I HIGHLY reccomend talking with Hulu.com im sure there has got to be a few stoners working there. This would be a great addition to the ad’s that hulu has on there site.

  15. The more support the better. If Obama has any brain at all which I highly doubt he does after seeing the total mess he has put the country and it’s people in since being in office he will legalize marijuana. The revenue from the tax’s alone are estimated to be in the billions of dollars. This would help us a lot as a country. When you look at the multi billion dollar drug war which much of the money allocated cannot even be accounted for and there has been absolutely no progress as far as stopping the flow of drugs into the country then you zsee it is a total waste of time and money.I can understand controlling cocaine and heroin, they are both not good, but marijuana is not bad for you.If used with the vaporisor method or in cooking it has virtualy no bad side effects on the human body. They sure can’t say that about alcahol and tobaco products. It would also tAke out a major part of mexico’s drug cartels and put a stop to the majority of their drug wars as well

  16. WOOT happy 420 all this should be on other post but did anyone see fox’s apologie (lol) episode of family guy this evening enjoy our 1st of the TEN days of 420 and stay safe peace my friends

  17. Wow….almost made me cry reading this, this is the perfect time to release the ad’s… I also just donated..keep up the great work and God Bless you NORML.

  18. Come on everyone donate $5,$10,$20,$50,$100 it’s how we get it LEGAL. Please just DONATE what you can. and DONATE NOW…..THANKS

  19. Finally some TV ads: Good for you! I will be making regular donations as long as you do this. Thank you on behalf of my brother who has Cancer.

  20. It’s a landmark effort for sure, and I thank this great organization for displaying diligence on this matter!
To: Whitmorris Langmire, You say we are all a bunch of dumb dirty hippies. Well maybe you should take a look at yourself, as that posting was as ignorant as it comes. You dont get out much do you?

  21. Awesome work guys ! Lets make 4/20 and 2009 the best and biggest year ever for liberating nature’s flower, Cannabis ! 🙂

You sir have some serious issue… not only are your stersotypes about 40 years out of date… but you then become the pot that calls the kettle black…. you call everyone here “fucking idiots” and yet your only defense against potsmokers is that they dont bathe or cut their hair… Before you go calling other people idiots maybe a good hard look in the mirror will set you straight.
People like you just cant stand MINDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS…..people like you (and I use the word people with you very lightly) just get off on trying to control other peoples lives dont you?
You should be ashamed of yourself… you are a traitor to the causes of freedom and justice…. hell you may even be a terrorist…since you certainly tried to hijack this thread…
so do us all a favor.. go and get an education about Cannabis and.. hell just go get an education in general… then come back and debate with the big boys…
until then crawl back to whatever hole your feeble little mind came from and do us all a great big favor…

  23. you guyes helped me with a case and now this ad has lifted my sperits so hi i dont need to smoke to make this the best 420 ever
    HAPPY 420

  24. Whitmorris Langmire-your argument contained not one piece of factual information. You are typical of most other present day prohibitionists. You rely on ignorance, demagoguery, and name-calling in order to justify your unamerican posture toward persecuting people who harm nobody. You know better than to try to have a fact-based intellectual conversation about this topic-you will be eaten for lunch.

  25. What a great date to make a statement !!!!
Hope we get a lot of memberships today !!!!!
    O’ya…. HAPPY 420 everybody !!!!!!!

  26. With the recent news about the Mexican cartels on our Southern border and the Italian study of cannabis and the elimination of brain cancer tumors, it is way past time to legalize cannabis and Obama needs this for helping eliminate our debt and ancient drug laws. Thanks for your ad and good luck today!

  27. Love the commerical and the message but I dont understand the laughter at the end ? We already have Obama and others giggling everytime the word marijuana comes up. The ad is great,on point and serious up until the giggling at the end. We want to be takin seriously because this is a serious issue. I hope Norml will edit out the giggling . Marijuana/Hemp prohibition effects virtually every person in america wether they are aware of it or not. The economy, medicine, crime, liberty, taxes, energy, and states rights are all involved in this fight.

  28. HAPPY 420 EVERYONE!!! Stay blowed all day feel me? Be safe and smart when out on the streets take caution visine piece of mint gum and come cologne n shits groovy ya dig?

  29. wow, a commercial. u guys are really makin people wanna call their reps and urging them to change marijuana laws. u guys take way to fucking long and your playin little games. i have also notice u havent posted any of my comments to wake up some of these people. enugh of your fake checks , enough with commercials and making people ” imagine the possibilities ” if pot was legalized. stop was wasting donating and get this shit done already. thanx for sensoring my opinion.

  30. Hi
I’m 65 and have been smoking the green for many a year I would love to see legal weed ion my lifetime …Yahoo!!!
    Thanks Norml

  31. Hey be sure to watch G4 if you have cable tonight at 7 they are playing superhighme half baked and a special on aots for 420 i believe they appreciate today just like all of us do so be sure to be to support them if you can
    http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/694825/420-G4-Celebrates-420.html
just leave a comment saying you appreciate them for honoring 420 or something its really cool of them to do celebrate 420 ..
if you havent seen superhighme its really good and of course half baked is a classic. The aots should be pretty good too theyve gone to amesterdam n stuff years before and its always good
    Thanks for reading

  32. Rumor is they are going to remove that ridiculous giggling at the end and replace it with a NORML logo. The laughing ruins the otherwise powerful message.

  33. Your ad literally brought a tear to my eye. I can only hope the American public will open their eye’s to the situation we are in with putting non-violent offender’s behind bar’s and destroying their live’s.
Thank you NORML Thank you so very much.
This is the time. Not 2012 NOW because the police force and government are constantly combating us and we are slowly on the way of loses our American live’s and freedoms as we know it.
    R.I.P. Marley and Bradley
And long live Santana, Cheech and Chong for showing the american public a comedic and musical side to the plant that has wrongly been classified as a Drug for the past 70 years.

  34. Well knock my legs off and call me shorty, happy 420! Let the Party…………begin!!
TV Commercials for legalization are 100% affective. Not much will change in the short term but people are talking now, they have to talk, it’s in their face thanks to NORML.

  35. Might i ad that we can not just have this ad running one day and then let it go. It needs to be constantly in the faces of the American public who have been brainwashed by the government since the 70’s, and still believe the lies. New commercials whatever you need to do. if the commercials are constantly on i can say for an upmost certainy that more people will join the organization, more people will donate to pay for the commercials. make these commercials constant and things will change.

  36. Whitmorris…”Yeah, this is what I want: a whole country full of people who don’t bathe or cut their hair and smell like dirt”.
Hehe, as if no one can get cannabis right now if they wanted to. Did you just get back from teabagging?
Honestly, it seems like you have a superiority complex over those who choose to smoke cannabis. Sounds like a character issue to me, but I’m sure more alcohol and pills will get you back on track.
Also, I don’t have a superior understanding of the world. Carl Sagan had a superior understanding of the world. Carl Sagan was a smoker. And you, sir, are no Carl Sagan.

  37. Yes, Yes We Can! Im so happy…finally…I hope eveyone in virginia gets to see it…..but NO is raining hard here in Northen Virginia on 4/20!!

  38. To Whitmorris Langmire,
Your arguement has the rhetoric of someone who lacks proper brain function to even discuss this topic. Please stay seated at the kiddie table and let the grown ups have this discussion. Let me tell you “sir”, If you stood next to me anywhere, I guarantee you would not be able to tell if I smoke pot or not. Your “insults” if you can even call them “insults” are the last bastion of any mouth-breather left to grasp for straws to justify their inane outdated reefer madness “ideas” that pot smokers are unwashed zombies, when it is obvious who the unwashed zombie is. All this would in fact sound ridiculous to someone who lacks common sence and a proper education. Stupidity should be illegal!
On another note, great job NORML! Who would have thought a decade ago that we would be advertising legalization on national television! This is great!

  40. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you NORML for pushing for OUR rights to smoke. I can not express the joy that I get from seeing this commercial. Just the possibilities that can come from this are endless.
I am a mom, wife, and hard working American and I support the reform for Marijuana laws.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart….Thanks NORML.

  41. I have never heard of anyone overdosing on weed. It is a natural herb and I would rather have something natural than a valium or something like that. I did not think I would ever see a black president, now I hope to see marijauna legalized and free up the jails…thereby giving the tax payers a break, and allowing me to go home a smoke a joint in peace to relax from a very stressful day!

  45. I’m so pleased to see this day come, as a patient tired of being looked at like a criminal, bad person of what have you. I Celebrate 420 with you and the rest of the beautiful people out there. Thanks everyone, Don’t forget to join NORML today for only $4.20 also donate for more commercials. Our voices are finally being heard
    Thank you Beautiful Peoples!

  46. This is a copy of a letter that I wrote to President Obama recently in an effort to make him understand how important it is to legalize it.
    Re: Medical Marijuana
    Dear Mr. President
What some people see as a crime issue, I see as a health issue. Thank you for opening the marijuana issue up for discussion and yes I know you are not for the legalization of it.
Allow me to introduce myself. I am the wife of a chronic pain patient who has been diagnosed that way for over half his life (he is now in his 60’s) He has had 3 back operations and his last doctor told him to never let any surgeon near him with a knife as once they opened him up, they wouldn’t know where to start.
What makes his situation so different is the fact that he is allergic to every kind of synthetic pain killer that the pharmaceutical companies have to offer right down to the lowly aspirin. He cannot take ANY of them as he will go into Anaphylaxis shock. His bodily functions shut down and for all intents and purposes…he is dead. Heart stops and he quits breathing. This has been documented by his doctors as well as the hospital on numerous occasions…it’s in his records. We never know when it’s going to happen which in itself is a double edged sword. It makes each moment of life all the more precious and also makes living in fear at times overwhelming.
The only thing that gives him some relief is marijuana…when we can find it. He is an upright honest citizen…a responsible husband and father but I don’t know how much longer he can deal with the pain. We’ve asked our various friends if they know of anyone who might have some for sale and they all shrug their shoulders. I’ve considered growing some…if I knew where to find some seeds and yes I know the risks here in Arizona should we get caught but my husband comes first. I understand that the government supplies this to a few who are in need, however I don’t know where to contact them to plead our case. Therefore we are forced by law to become criminals. Please…I beg you…please get something passed so that we can live a normal life again. We’ve talked about our situation at length and although we are very afraid of losing everything we have worked so hard for, we’ve come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to make our voice heard. Should you wish to speak to him or e-mail him he is ready to answer any questions you might have. Please…please help us.
    Respectfully
    Linda Ball

  47. To Whitmorris Langmire: Come on, give it a try, you won’t be sorry. Please add your $4.20 donation before you move on… thanks sir!
Hey! Great job NORML! I can’t wait to see the commercials locally.
Happy 4/20 everyone! Let’s get this herb leagalized!

  48. i too think they should remove the giggling at the end as it does kinda look somewhat bad to me as well. but other than that i love the commercial and i hope i get to see it on the tv tonight. GREAT JOB!! guys and i wish i had anything to donate but at the moment i am jobless because my company has all but shut down due to the economy 🙁 but when i get back on track you cansurely expect a check from me. keep it up 🙂

  49. Thank you for putting us out there. Those freaking above the influence commercials are downright offensive (stealing from their little sister? really?) and its refreshing to finally see the logical side of the argument on cable.

  50. Hey…. Happy 420. I going to spend all day trying to contact the media in every form, so we can get somwhere with all this. 20 million people is too many. This has to end. Gen 1:29

  51. If we keep these ads on the air in heavy rotation for about 3 years, maybe we will get a candidate for change in 2012. Biden and Clinton are hard core anti-marijuana tyrants. Expect nothing but the worst from them.
It’s going to be a long painful wait. I feel for everyone who will have their lives ruined by corrupt marijuana laws inbetween now and then.

  52. WHY DOES SHE LAUGH AT THE END????? This ad is so dang hypocritical. You get mad at Obama for laughing at the issue, then you are running an ad with a girl laughing at the end???? This is the one you chose? LAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I see a post about the giggling at the end being removed. DO IT! No one is going to take this seriously if they watch that end part. I am truly offended by this ad.

  53. It’s great to hear that these ads will be running. I can’t wait to see one on TV. Does anyone know if they will show ones with scientifc facts to disprove all of the propoganda we have had forced on us all these years? Also, will there be any that talk about how it will be harder for kids to get it? Hopefully they cut the laughter out of this one. Great Job NORML!!

  54. THIS IS GREAT!!! a positive commercial about how pot helps the world in so many different ways…i love it! we have no commercials about the BIG DRUG ISSUE “crack cocaine!” that drug is killing people and destroying everyones lives. i agree with don too…there should not be a giggle at the end of the commercial and as for the comment by “real results”. dont you think we should be fighting alcoholism prescription drug addiction and everything else that are killing people or leaving them homeless because of the legal drug addictions {alcohol is a drug}…i am a recovering alcoholic and have been clean and sober except for the prescription drugs since 1982.my father died from drinking and a few other family members. i almost died myself from drinking. i think you are entitled to your opinions but do some reading about methadone and morphine addiction which is used for pain control now.weigh the pros and cons of everything you read {even though you disagree with pot smokers} think about all that and give yourself a honest answer about which is worse. be open to something new and harmless and as for being dirty etc etc.when i smoke…i have to shower and i wwork twice as hard at whatever i am doing. my long hair came from the 60s when the beatles came out and i HAVE TO WASH IT EVERYDAY!i am also a vet. does smoking pot make us vets bad when all or 75% used it while serving our country? just think about everything with a open mind…the whole world is changing and i am 54 yrs old and saw alot of changes and STILL CHANGING!i may not like some of the things as you do not like this but you nor me can stop it

  55. Happy 420 to all! I have read some articles regarding law enforcement plans to crack down on DUI for 420. We all know how law enforcement will stretch the truth regarding pot busts to justify their existence (i.e. find 1 clone or seedling, weigh it with the soil, and announce to the public that they seized a 20 lb plant of high grade marijuana with a street value of $50 million dollars, thus saving the children). Please everyone enjoy the day and celebrate, but don’t give law enforcement the opportunity to boast about DUI arrests. That would greatly hurt the cause, not to mention kill your buzz. Great work NORML.

  56. HI MY NAME IS JOE I HAVE BEEN SMOKING MARIJUNA FOR OVER 55 YEARS, THEY SHOULD ASK ME ABOUT IT, I CAN GIVE THEM MORE THEN A FEW POSITIVES ABOUT MARIJUNA. THANK YOU

  57. If you know what they are, would it be possible to post some of the times and channels that the ads will be airing?

  58. why is there not one black person in the commerical. Legalize it but include every hard working american!

  59. Happy holidaze! We’re almost there, people. Keep fighting–write to your elected leaders today and tell them what’s important to you!

  60. That was so beautiful it literally almost brought a tear to my eye. Happy 420 everyone. May your bowls runneth over.

  61. I do hope you erase the laughing before you send it out, because after all, it is “NO LAUGHING MATTER” REMEMBER? We all wrote our legislators telling them that! Thanks for everything NORML.

  62. Respect People!
From out of Amsterdam i wish you the best 420!
It should be a basic humanright to free your own mind and soul, peacefully anf if desired only!
    One Love!

  63. WHITMORRIS: You wouldn’t know an intellectual if it bit your ass! haha. But your Ignorance sounds like YOU have a better understanding of the world than cannabis users. That’s why cannabis is legal in 13 states. take that and smoke it douche’. Oh and the giggling at the end is just sooo “mainstream”. I thought we were trying to abolish the “cartoonish” stereoptype?

  64. THANK YOU NORML!!! Glad to see my donations at work! Great ad, just hope you can keep it running throughout the year.

  65. Did anyone catch the FAMILY GUY last night? It was about legalizing Marijuana in Quahog. The political rhetoric found in this episode was very encouraging for the anti-prohibitionists.
The irony of it all was that the ONDCP or Partnership for Drug free America ran an anti-marijuana ad right after the episode was finished. It was so stereotypical, not to mention laden with illogical conlusions and false or incorrect assumptions regarding marijuana use.
So, the lying to our children continues.

  66. Dude, man. Time for a victory bowl* toke*……..
and then it’s off to the post office 2 mail my letters to congress. Power2thePotheadS

  67. Smoking is so low in the usa, that legalizing marijuana wont have a major effect on anything…
People have jobs to worry about and their mortgage….you cant come into work drunk and you cant come in high…..and you cant space out….nothing will actually change…..
Its DARE and the boogeyman….it tell yah what…

  68. The giggling at the end negates the effectiveness of the entire ad. Can’t fathom why that was put in there. Why hand your critics a diversionary response with a bow on top?
If you want to keep this subject a policy discussion, take that nonsense at the end out.

  69. Reform PSA by Nice Peter, Winner, 2nd Place (*****)
(‘Mr Obama, I Kinda Wrote This Song For You’)

    – This Contest-Winner is my all-time fave;
(Reminiscent of a SchoolHouse Rock video)
    – Nice Peter employs song + animation-stills to illustrate the injustice and absurdity
    that is Cannabis Prohibition.
NOTE: This Ad-Contest Winner is an abbreviated-version of the entire song,
    however…
    the math-essentials are still covered…
    – – NORML, in the near future,
would you please run the complete,
1min 58sec version of this ad somewhere?
Full, 98 second version’s YouTube address:

    My request is entirely unsolicited,
(I have no direct affilliation w/ NP, except a desire to end Cannabis Prohibition)
    51 second ad-song’s lyrics
    “There were SEVEN-HUNDRED SIXTY-FIVE THOUSAND
marijuana arrests in TWO-THOUSAND and SEVEN.
That’s not for dealers and kingpins,
No, that’s just for simple possession.
Multiply that by the average-cost of each arrest
    What have you got?
    SEVEN-POINT-SIX BILLION DOLLARS spent
on people just smoking some pot.
That’s enough money to buy health-insurance for
    every child that needs it.
That’s enough cash to adopt every stray dog
and enough left over to feed it.
Mr. Obama, I kinda wrote this song for you
You got my vote for change, now let’s see what you can do.”

  70. HAPPY 420 DAY! KEEP THEM BONGS-PIPES-HOOTERS OR WHATEVER YOU YOU USE, FIRED UP. FLICK YOUR BIC FOR THE END OF MARIJUANA PROHIBITION.

  71. until my 20th birthday i was completely against marijuana i thought it made you stupid and lazy and bla bla bla i was taken in by the mainstream D.A.R.E. governmental bullshit until i actually smoked pot and realized that if you smoke pot and turn into a lazy skeezy stoner than you were in fact a lazy skeezy asshole before you started smoking pot…marijuana alleviates my chronic shoulder pain my arthritis pain helps my bi-polar disorder…and No it does not make me stupid as my IQ stands at 125 =p

  72. Finally something on TV to combat the RIDICULOUS above the influence commercials! Great work NORML!!! Happy 4/20 all!

  73. Great idea, but from an advertising perspective I don’t see this particular ad working very well. The point of an ad campaign of this nature is to inform the viewer and subsequently offer them a “call to action”. While the ad does succeed in offering a few good perspectives on legalization, your call to action is specifically to the president and not to the viewer. A better call to action would be to ask the viewer to “learn more at NORML.org”. Aside from the call to action, a couple of the testimonials are a bit weak on eliciting sympathy. A student lost her scholarship for using pot? I had a friend loose her scholarship for alcohol use. Is it a bit extreme? Perhaps, but there are tons of people who need scholarships that would gladly forgo any substance use whatsoever to get one. A woman lost her job as a teacher for smoking pot? That one leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Was she performing her job well? Was she high at work? I doubt it, but the fact that she was let go due to pot is not an argument for legalization.
I understand the desire to showcase how the consequences of prohibition affect a wide base of people, but their cases need to be strong in order to affect a real change in perspective.

  74. best of luck, NORML. i’m also a big fan of the Marijuana Policy Project.. it’s going to be a huge uphill battle since Obama himself declared that ‘legalization is off the table’, but we have to keep fighting.

  75. gee, i don’t celebrate 4/20. i guess i’ll have to stick with having all my brain cells, and being able to think clearly about what i’m doing, and what i want to say, and not to mention not popping positive on a drug test, which means i can actually be trusted by any potential employer that could potentially hire me to not do any drugs. you all talk all big about “legalizing marijuana is the right thing to do”, but you’re failing to realize that there are consequences for your choice to smoke marijuana, and it’s not just the same old consequences we’ve already seen in commercials either, such as running over a kid riding their bike because you’re too doped up on marijuana to notice the kid on the bike. try not being able to get a real job, other than doing the occasional contract work doing whatever type of work potheads do. wait, potheads don’t work, and if they do, they ALWAYS have to have their marijuana with them. at least that’s been my experience in working with potheads in the past. i can’t tell you the amount of times i’ve heard the phrase “smoke a bowl” in the year that i did construction, and i also can’t tell you how sickening the smell of marijuana is to me, because it’s obviously not sickening to all of you that think it’s such a “great” idea to legalize it. what’s more pathetic is that during my year of doing construction, i saw a grown man that appeared to be successful be reduced to a wuss whenever marijuana was present, but yet he would swear up and down that he was a man’s man. ironic, isn’t it?
i personally have NEVER seen anyone that marijuana has helped. you can go on and on and on about “but marijuana can be used medicinally to aid in treating cataracts!” but how many of you people that want it legalized HAVE cataracts, and what makes ANY of you think that the best way to treat cataracts is to be so high on marijuana that you don’t even know if you have eyeballs to begin with?
like i said, i guess i’ll just have to stick with having all my brain cells intact, and being able to think clearly and express myself clearly so others can actually understand what i’m talking about. darn it all! for anyone that reads this post: i’m not trying to defend my point of view versus your point of view. i’m simply stating what i know and what i’ve experienced concerning marijuana, and why i know it to be a wrong thing to get into.

  76. Bravo NORML !!!
But, please eliminate the laughing at the end of this otherwise powerful ad.
The laughing makes it seem as though everyone in the ad just admitted it was all a joke… and they are all just actors.
Thank you and get active everyone.

  77. I think this is a huge turning point w/ America and awareness w/ Cannabis Culture and how we don’t belong in prison and wasting millions of our dollars on harmless herb smokers. Legalize, Educate, and Regulate. Give this Plant the Respect it Deserves! Peace, Sustainable, and Green-Living, Plant-The-Land™

  78. Beyond wonderful and a it’s been a long time coming.
Never give up people, as difficult as it may seem at times, never give up because we will win.

  79. How about DECRIMINALISING the Cannabis Plant? To hell with taxing it…there should not be one law against a PLANT.I wish Norml would be making a commercial about how the OIL from the Hemp Plant is the CURE FOR CANCER..yes smoking the herb can help with the evil side effects of chemo and the other poisons that go along with these so called “Treatments” but ingesting the OIL is THE CURE. Not one word of this info is coming from Norml, MPP, and other organizations. WHY IS THIS???? How many of you are aware of Rick Simpson from Canada and the Phoenix Tears website?? PLEASE go to http://www.phoenixtears.ca and watch the video RUN FROM THE CURE. This man has helped CURE many ill people with HEMP OIL…yet how much of this will Norml step up and tell people about???? They consider this man (almost) a Snake Oil Salesman!! NOT ONE WORD about what this guy has done. And Rick Simpson and Jack Herer (author of The EMPOROR WEARS NO CLOTHS) scratch their heads and are asking WHY THE SILENCE??? Ive asked this question myself and NOBODY at Norml will respond. PLEASE Google THC and Cancer. There IS A CURE FOR CANCER but not by smoking the herb..its the HEMP OIL THAT SAVES. I *BEG* everyone who reads this post to check out what Rick Simpson and the Phoenix Tears program is all about..then ask Norml and MPP and others whats the SILENCE all about…God knows Im still waiting for the answer. Rick and Jack are too.
Happy 420 Everyone…Im kicking back this very minute and enjoying Gods most perfect plant on our planet!

  80. ***Whitmorris Langmire #21***
YOU’RE A JOKE..!!! I take a Bath sometimes twice a day.. and so do all of my friends.. most of which smoke/toke and have VERY respectful jobs..!!
I really feel like you owe me and the others like me an apology!! It looks like your opinion came from watching the stereotypes on TV.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC9uzHQV8fY

    And Thank You NORML..!!
    Pease and Love to everyone..!!

  81. It’s about time. In you face is where its at. Good vid but the girl at the end ruins it. Please delete her and just have someone say again “yes we can” but with intent and lets be serious. What is with the giggles?

  82. These ads are great. Now the bad news. If anyone might have noticed the opposition is digging in. I’m sure I heard Obama say they were going to get tougher one drug use .He said this while meeting Caldoron in Mexico.

  83. “I lost my scholarship, but I’m still laughing.”
That’s how many people are going to interpret this commercial.

  84. Hi I want to join Norml, but would like to know the email address uses for paypal you know like donatesomething@norml.com so I can send $4.20 to join, but I can send it in a way where I know for sure I won’t get nothing sent in the mail to me.
When you pay by paypal your address is there and it’s up to just the email notes please email me back norml and post back on the comments.
You may need to adjust your paypal shopping bag. You’ll probally get even more members
    Thanks Jim!

  85. This would be a lot better if the giggling at the end was removed.
Too bad it’s so soon after the similar, but hilariously bad NOM ad against gay marriage.

  86. Happy 4/20 everybody. I just got an e-mail from my State Rep. and I want y’all to see what he had to say:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the use of marijuana for medical purposes. I appreciate hearing from you.
Although I share your concerns for the pain and suffering of those who are sick, I do not support the use of marijuana for medical purposes pending further research. I am aware, however, of a drug called Marinol, which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration and has been used with good results. The drug contains an active ingredient (delta-9-THC) that is found in the marijuana plant. Unlike Marinol, however, marijuana (the plant material) does not provide standardized THC content and often contains impurities (including leaves, mold spores, and bacteria) which could be harmful to users. I will keep your suggestions in mind if this issue is addressed in the Senate
    Sincerely,
    Mark Pryor
    United States Senate
Talk about misinformed, as long as they have this kind of ideal about marijuana we a in for a bit of a fight. Anyway everyone have a good 420 and blaze one for me!!!

  87. Yes. I agree 100% withmany of you about the ending. A NORML logo to cover up the laughing at the end would be perfect.
Thx NORML and happy 4/20 everybody! Donate $4.20 if you can, because all of us most definitely should!

  88. Why is the girl laughing at the end of the TV ad? It’s one serious ear-catching ending, but then it cuts to somebody laughing like it’s funny. Come on NORML!

  89. Alcohol may cause many problems, such as fights, lethal accidents, and rape. This is true. If alcohol was illegal, would it change that? If so, How? If alcohol is legal, the only difference, is that we punish a person for what they do on alcohol, rather than for the fact that they possess or drink it, at least when referring to adults, and assuming that the laws are sensible. The ultimate goal of law is to maintain order. Law can curtail the damages that alcohol presents. If alcohol were illegal, instead of curtailing damages we would be adding more damages by use of force. We already know this as fact from our own history with alcohol prohibition. Legalizing alcohol, allowed for an individual to take responsibility for their own actions regarding alcohol, as opposed to labeling them a criminal at the onset with no trial.
Alcohol is poisonous in large amounts, It can cause liver failure, asphyxiation, coma, and various other health problems and ultimately, death. We learned that no matter what way the legality of alcohol swings, people will continue to drink it all the same, albeit, when it is illegal, people who drink it are criminals regardless of what they do in the drunken state, while when it is legal, alcohol drinkers are responsible adults, who may or may not be criminals, depending on their actions. Legal alcohol lends to a multi-billion dollar industry, thus providing substantial support for the economy. Federal law states that when a person knowingly consumes a lethal poison, they are guilty of attempted suicide. Yet even still, legal alcohol is less damaging to society than illegal alcohol, as long as laws regarding such, are sensible.
The same goes for all drugs labeled as poisons.
    Marijuana is not a poison.
    Marijuana is not physically addictive.
When smoked through a vaporizer, marijuana is less carcinogenic than a burnt steak, or burnt toast.
Marijuana has uses in several multi-billion dollar industries, such as Textiles, Medicine, and even food.
Marijuana alters the users state of mind. As a substance, it fits the classical definition of drug.
Water can change a person’s state of mind from fear of dieing from dehydration, into a state of deep gratitude for the chance to survive. By definition as a substance, in the fact that it can change a person’s state of mind, water is a drug. Over-consumption of water can cause liver failure. Water has the potential to be fatal when consumed in large quantities. Water is not classified as a poison.
Marijuana prohibition is even less logical, and less reasonable, than was alcohol prohibition.

  90. the family guy last night was great happy 420.
thank you norml cant wait to see the add on tv

  91. Ok this is GREAT! However… why are they just showing it on cable networks? Hmm… It needs to be on NBC, CBS, PBS, and ABC… we need to fight the power! (by the way I don’t smoke it, but I want it legalized!)

  92. So what ?!! 4/20 in California is just the same old day .
Wake up rest of American States .Change is coming…………..to you hillbillies .

  93. Fabulous job, NORML! I made my donation today, I just wish I had more to give.
I am not offended by the laughter in the commercial, but I respect the opinion of those who were. You should take them into account in your next round of ad buys.
You guys (and girls) ROCK!! Happy 4/20!!!

  94. Wonderful!!! Keep up the great work and lets continue the push to de-criminalization and legalization!!! Have to wait to celebrate 4.20, due to a rediculous posession charge 🙁

  95. I hope everyone has a happy and safe 420!!! I’ll watch for the ads, I know I’ll be watching the G4 420 special, I’m sure I’ll be seeing one then. Peace and love everyone, and remember to celebrate responsibly!

  96. I’m so happy to see pro-marijuana ads on TV appearing, it is time for a real change. Marijuana helps my pain and nausea that I get everyday from Crohn’s disease but currently the price is too high because of prohibition. End prohibition now. Happy 4/20 everyone, tokers and non-tokers alike.

  97. LOL They bought ads on FAKE NEWS… LOL guess money is the root of all evil with them because the whole weekend we were trolls trying to further our agenda and were corrupt because we have the nerve to voice our opinions. Oh well I really hope that this carries a resounding message. Happy 420 to all and to all a good night. Peace.

  98. Happy 420 everyone. I just sent $75 for the cause from me and $4.20 from my daughter, a student at U.G.A. I even used my credit card. How liberating. If I get arrested I will never shut up…. I am a hardworking tax paying citizen and I built my own very successful business while being a pot smoker. We are on the way people. It is going to take perseverance from all generations…. Keep up the fight.. Is there somewhere we can go to find out how many donated and how much? Thanks and smoke up johnny….

  99. Amen #35 Tiny minds create tiny worlds that people live in to justify their own lack of something, albeit education or wealth or most likely in Whittmore Langmire’s case penis length.

  100. “Rumor is they are going to remove that ridiculous giggling at the end and replace it with a NORML logo. The laughing ruins the otherwise powerful message.”
    Seriously
    and
Family guy episode 4/20 was yesterday!

  101. Quote from: Whitmorris
“If you really want to get marijuana legalized, you should jump in a time machine and go back and talk some shit with George Washington. Bunchof fucking idiots.”
Yes, smoking pot makes everyone idiots. Just like not smoking makes everyone else brianiacs? After all, it’s not like any scientists or doctors ever have or ever will smoke pot. Oh wait, they did and do. Try not to see things as so black and white; that’s not how life works in reality.

  102. I just used Paypal to donate $4.20 and I am terrified the goverment will find out, put me on a list and I will be denied employment. I don’t even smoke pot (HONEST!). I hope I don’t regret this.

  103. “Above The Influence” is spamming the hell out of every TV station I watch with their agenda of lies. The amount of money (and lies) spent on those “ATI” commercials shows the length of what a motivated person (or group) can do. Too bad it is usually the misinformed and/or the deceptive that seem to have an abundance of effort and money. There is a fraction of cannabis users who can not join NORML for fear of over-zealous government background research. Take this hypothesis;
If I’m a smoker and my brother is a scientist trying to find employment, the background interview process would be similar to FBI and CIA employment policies. My “being a smoker” would actually prevent him from being considered for the position due to the brainwashing anti-pot rhetoric this country’s government seem to embrace. Yes it may be a small percentage but, there are many smokers who are afraid to “endanger” their relatives and peers by becoming public with their opinions. Remember this is the USA, There is no place for opinions here:P

  104. I love the idea that our ever increasing government will legalize marijauna, but unfortunatley I am a realist. Obama is just another puppet for the political agendas. That people have no voice with them. Until we can give America back to the people instead of the Democrats or Republicans….just be prepared for more of the same.

  105. #140 You will be fine. Calm down. I was just kidding about getting arrested.Have a great day and thanks for donating!!! Happy 420

  106. HAPPY 420 EVERYONE BUT THE GOV I GUESS DONT WANT THE EXTRA BILLIONS TALKING ABOUT THE WHITE HOUSE IS GONNA TRY REHAB 4 DRUG ABUSERS ISNT THAT WHAT IS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE PUTTING PPLE IN JAIL OR REHAB WHILE WASTING MORE N MORE $ HOW STUPID

  107. graphicartist2k5 you aren’t fooling me. First off no one in construction should be smoking on the job. And there should be restrictions and penalties for that. I personally have a problem with people who drink around me and act messed up but you don’t see me saying that these people are worthless addicts with no brain ability or work ability for what they do in the privacy of a home or bar. There actually is something called being a responsible smoker and a responsible drinker. People are going to smoke whether it’s illegal or not. So what I am guessing that you actually support is locking people up who use a pretty harmless substance instead of regulating and taxing it. If so, you are a sick person, and where is your humanity? Lost in alcohol and pills?

  108. I will admit that this is a great way to get out the message, but I personally believe that most state legislatures would rather legalize every other drug before cannabis. Its just grown into such a social taboo in some places-mostly on the east coast- and it will take an alarming ammount of reform to get state and federal laws changed, most likely on the executive level.
Until that day my fellow tokers, we should push on and keep out of trouble… And maybe then we can destroy that steriotypical image that non-users share and show them the real side of our plight. Average people being persecuted for what they love, and what they believe in.
    Happy 420 everyone.

  109. “The makers of our Constitution undertook to secure conditions favorable to the pursuit of happiness. They recognized the significance of man’s spiritual nature, of his feelings and of his intellect. They knew that only part of the pain, pleasure and satisfactions of life are to be found in material things. They sought to protect Americans in their beliefs, their thoughts, their emotions and their sensations. They conferred against the government, the right to be let alone – the most comprehensive of rights and the right most valued by civilized men.” Olmstead v. United States, 277 U.S. 438 (1928).

  110. “”I just used Paypal to donate $4.20 and I am terrified the goverment will find out, put me on a list and I will be denied employment. I don’t even smoke pot (HONEST!). I hope I don’t regret this.””
    LOL
    please be trolling

  111. Please please please remove that giggling girl at the end.
Most people who see this video say that she RUINS ALL credibility of the otherwise great commercial.
Please norml, do the right thing, fix the commercial

  112. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent
When will the government get tired of its own lies? Obama was one big ass mistake again. He is nothing but a puppet under control by something bigger. Marijuana policy changes is a no brainer. The government’s drug war has destroyed thousands of lives all over the world and it continues with the failed policy. I wonder how much drug money gets back into the government’s greedy hands. It is 4/20, go out and yell from your windows and doors, I am tired of the lies and I am not going to take it any longer.

  113. NORML,
I just saw your NORML commercial on TV. Now let me first say, this has been a great day. It’s been safe, and enjoyable throughout the whole day. Suddenly, the TV show I was watching took a commercial break and eventually led to your commercial. I had chill bumps and even got a little teary eyed(not from the marijuana…lol) After seeing that commercial has seriously made this day the greatest day in a very long time. Simply…… Amazing!

  114. The clip you are seeing for the ad on YouTube is the original winning entry. The ending has been edited to cut the giggling at the end and replace it with NORML contact information. I will try to find that footage and post it on the blog.

  115. What is the percentage of peple who has taken any HARD DRUG, that is now adicted, or has been on an accident, or has gone broke, or has distroyed families, or has killed that did not smoked marihuana as his or her FIRST DRUG?
If you have problems with you weed, then stop smoking it. If you need a pain killer, ask your goverment for free and better medicine. But do not contribute to incourage ignorant people to take the first step to the following drugs. Has any relative or friend died because of drugs?

  116. I remember as little as a year ago i was telling people legalization was no more then 3 or 4 years away…they would say no maybe 10 or 20 …but with this stuff happening it looks so close…THANK YOU MICHAEL PHELPS

  117. Obama just raised the price on taxing cigarettes and perhaps this is just another smoking item to get more money…It should be legal and one should be permitted to grow your own just like I can grow my own herbs.

  118. This is great. I think that the laughing needs to be cut out. I have been watching the tube all day. I have been waiting for it to come on but no luck. I will help to support a good cause. But I want to see what Im buying first. So… NORML is this for the whole nation or just your local? If I give you $100.00 dollars , am I gonna see some support from my tv here in TN.? I am willing to help, I was at the tea party with my sign to reform the marijuana laws, I am willing to help I bought two shirts, I am willing to help. I sent the e-mails. I am willing to help I dont buy corn flakes. I am willing to help. I bother thethe Mayor. Show me the flick and i will show you the money. HAPPY 4 20.

  119. YEA #164 US RESPONSIBLE POT SMOKERS CANNOT LOSE LIKE AUSTRALIA THEY WERE SO CLOSE TO MAKING IT LEGAL. TAXED AND REGULATED

  120. Thank you so much!!
I was in pain and pretty much alone today but this made me feel much better.
**I hope Obama also thinks of us lonely, severely depressed, suicidal, anxiety filled, bored, honest, loving, people too.
    Sigh.. 🙂

  121. I would hope that State laws in Texas can be changed as the federal law is . Growing should not be more of a penalty than buying smuggled POT.
I have done both and sure would like to regulate my own supply.
    GO NORML!!!!!!!!!!

  122. #162, Servando: I’m willing to bet LARGE money that nearly 100% “of peple who has taken any HARD DRUG, that is now adicted, or has been on an accident, or has gone broke, or has distroyed families, or has killed that did not smoked marihuana as his or her FIRST DRUG?” actually used tobacco or alcohol “as his or her FIRST DRUG.” Those are legal and we don’t put people in cages for using, possessing, buying or selling them. People who have problematic patterns of substance use (ANY subtance) need treatment. People who have responsible patterns of use deserve the right to continue their responsible use without arrest, harassment, injury, or death at the hands of law enforcement.

  123. graphicartist2k5 you my friend are an ignorant fool, and thats all i really feel like wasting my time to say about that, oh and by the way i havnt smoked weedin 7 years. i may not smoke but i did for a loooong time and i know that it NEEDS to be legal and when it is i will partake once in awhile again 🙂 HAPPY 4/20 EVERYBODY!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  124. TIME HAS COME PEOPLE!!! BABYLON IS FALLING!!! NOW MORE THAN EVER WE MUST UNITE AND COME TO AN OVERSTANDING!!!!
BIG UP ALL NATIONS ALL RACES!!!
    JAH RASTAFAR-I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  125. Thank you so much for being our voice in this hopeless world.
Now we all need to stand up for Marc Emery a great man.
    Love from Sweden

  126. Look I was Ok with the giggling, that’s the main reason I smoke MJ. But “this has been a public service announcement for Norml.” People “public service announcements (or PSA’s) are ads that broadcast stations run for FREE as a public service. They serve two primary purposes.
    1. They give the broadcast station something to put in during scheaduled commercial breaks when they were unable to sell that time.
    2. They give the illusion that the broadcaster is concerned about the public interest. Makes it look like the TV station cares.
This was a paid political announcement,(if you can call anything NORML does political. There’s very strict rules about these things. WHAT ARE YOU GUYS SMOKING.
Not even ONDCP the anti drug ads are Public Service Announcements anymore.
Also the girl lost her scholarship for smoking MJ.
DUH. Isn’t that why they passed that ridiculously punitive law in the first place. Cause they want to punish kids for smoking pot.
And then you had to use the YES WE CAN slogan. Now Obama has to go out of his way to distance himself from reform or the Republican’s are going to say this was on of HIS ads.
Just a stretch but would you consider hiring some Professional Ad agencies and Political Consultants.
I mean I like the energy, we have the energy, just like we have the facts and we even have the numbers. We just don’t know how to use it in an effective way.

  127. I am proud to be a supporter of NORML and it’s efforts as of today. I would like to thank not only NORML but all of the civil rights groups, MPA, MPA, LEAP and all the great independant film producers for creating the heavy conservative winds of change : )
    Happy 420 day!

  128. NORML GOES TO CAPITAL HILL
NORML – Thanks for making time for us Congressman X
we know how busy you are.
CONGRESSMAN – Well when my secretary said NORML called for an appointment, you know what a flashback, I didn’t know you guys were still out there.
NORML – You know about NORML
CONGRESSMAN – Well of course, I’m only 52. See here’s my high school Yearbook from 1974. That’s me with the NORML tee shirt.
NORML – Congressman then you know all we we want is for Marijauna to Regulated, Taxed, Age Restrictions, Create jobs.
CONGRESSMAN – (in unison) taxed, regulated, jobs, Yeah that really takes me back. Actually I remember writing a paper like that my junior year.
NORML – Congressman you sponsored the BILL to deny Student Aid to anyone with a MJ conviction.
CONGRESSMAN – Co-sponsored young lady, along with 50 other of my distinguished colleauges. Easiest issue since drunk driving.
NORML – But congressman you know the truth.
CONGRESSMAN – You want the truth, you can’t handle the truth, always wanted to say that.
Here’s the truth, last year I was up for re-election, ONDCP donated to my campaign war chest, the maximum. PARENTS AGAINST POT donated, the maximum.
COPS AGAINST RETARDED STONERS donate ,,,,, The Maximum.
Do you see NORML anywhere on my donar list.
NORML – Well no, but you’ve been one of the Drug War’s biggest supporters.
CONGRESSMAN – My good friend Barney Frank sponsored a Decriminalization bill a couple of years back. Norml donate to him.
NORML – Well no, not really
CONGRESSMAN – No, not at all. How about this. You can’t give me any money. How about votes. If I help NORML will NORML’s membership vote for me.
NORML – Well the Democrat ones will.
CONGRESSMAN – And the Republican pot smokers.
NORML – Will still vote for you opponent.
CONGRESSMAN – Even if I give them what they want.
NORML – See their waiting for the Republicans to support legalization.
CONGRESSMAN – The Republican’s are going to legalize marijuana, see statements like that are why I quit smoking pot in College. You laugh so hard it hurts. Hey (makes peace sign) Ron Paul. He He….
Look it was really nice going down memory lane with you, hey can I get another one of those NORML tee shirts, I play basketball with some other congressman on Saturday’s, they’ll love it.

  129. I love the new TV campaign! I gave another $50 paypal for this on this 4/20. I love cannabis and want to be legal and accepted it society.
I would recommend for future TV ads to have more races of people. Show the world smoking pot instead of just a bunch of white people.
I think marijuana legalization might really happen soon! I hope more people donate to this TV cause. The future is compassion for the drug user, I can feel it; I really think that in the future the cannabis consumer will be considered a protected class against ‘reefer madness’ hate.

  130. Sevando (#162):
What is the percentage of people who have smoked marijuana and moved onto any hard drug? THAT is the question you should be asking. Look up the facts for yourself and you’ll see that most pot smokers don’t move onto hard drugs. Check out the Library on this website for more info. They cite their sources so you can check them out for yourself if you’d like. Here’s an excerpt:
Myth: Marijuana Leads to Harder Drugs
There is no scientific evidence for the theory that marijuana is a “gateway” drug. The cannabis-using cultures in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America show no propensity for other drugs. The gateway theory took hold in the sixties, when marijuana became the leading new recreational drug. It was refuted by events in the eighties, when cocaine abuse exploded at the same time marijuana use declined.
As we have seen, there is evidence that cannabis may substitute for alcohol and other “hard” drugs. A recent survey by Dr. Patricia Morgan of the University of California at Berekeley found that a significant number of pot smokers and dealers switched to methamphetamine “ice” when Hawaii’s marijuana eradication program created a shortage of pot.1 Dr. Morgan noted a similar phenomenon in California, where cocaine use soared in the wake of the CAMP helicopter eradication campaign.
The one way in which marijuana does lead to other drugs is through its illegality: persons who deal in marijuana are likely to deal in other illicit drugs as well.
    Footnote
    1. “Survey: Hawaii war on pot pushed users to ‘ice,'” Honolulu Advertiser, April 1, 1994 p. 1.

  131. Although I agree that marijuana should be legalized, do you not realize that your deluge of ads only made the police force and anti-Marijuanians that more angry! Maybe someone could help my son who got arrested today, on 4/20 for possession in the toughest state in the country. He will be facing prison instead of graduating high school in four weeks and going off to college. 18 year olds don’t think about being arrested, but take these ads as false security. Yes, he shouldn’t have put himself in that position…but he will be facing a life-changing punishment.

  132. 4/20/09 is here & all I can think about is getting enough signatures so Floridians will have their right to vote for Medical Marijuana. So please sign a petition.

  133. Whitmorris Langmire,
It it is obvious by your mastery of the english language that Cannibis Advocates are nothing but dirty hippies, who don’t bathe, work, or accomplish anything that directly contributes positively to our society. Just like George Washington…We should all be ashamed of ourselves for wanting the freedom to obtain, grow, and consume Cannibis responsibly in our homes because what free Americans do in the privacy of their own homes is everyone’s, including the government’s business. I, for one, am going down to my nearest local liquor serving establishment to tie a few on while screaming “Spring Break, whoooooohooooo” at the top of my lungs. Maybe, just maybe then, I will be able to think rationally, clearly, and precisely. Also right before I get behind the wheel of my car for a great night of drunk driving, I’ll do a little good old fashioned gay-bashing. My friend Mr. Whitmorris Langmire you have enlightend me. With enough practice on the “Beer Bong” maybe one lucky day I’ll be presented with the opportunity to take advantage of some random college girl who’s way to intoxicated to even stand. Then you can stand back, polish the frame that contains your GED and take pleasure in the fact that you did your country a service by teaching a bunch of “fucking retarded stoners” a lesson.
You my friend are one hell of an American…

  134. You have no concept commenter #21 of what the truth is. You’re a perfect example of the lying propaganda surrounding cannabis.
Please do, continue drinking your brain cell killing alcohol.

  135. Let’s keep the pressure up on President Obama and hopefully by the beginning of his SECOND term he may finally do it… I honestly don’t have much hope for the first term – but… it’s a process. If more and more states decriminalize and it becomes clear that it’s the nation’s will it will eventually happen.

  136. Russ Belville,
Its good to hear you guys cut out the laughing at the end. Other than that I thought it was a powerful ad, and deserved to win. I have not seen this ad on television yet, but look froward to when I do.
Keep up the good work NORML.
    sincerely,
    Just a NORML guy.

  137. Pleading with you, leave the redhead in at the end she is too cute. Have her redo the ending without the giggles she has a great warm and friendly smile. Like the commercial, run it all over the country.

  138. Pleading with you, leave the redhead in at the end she is too cute. Have her redo the ending without the giggles she has a great warm and friendly smile. Like the commercial, run it all over the country.

  139. never smoked, never will. this is a great ad though. id have to look around some more before i make true conclusions, but it seems like the other side’s only point is the ‘chaos will ensue’ stance. which is obviously total crap. very interesting…got me thinking.

  140. Do more commercials stating the facts vs federal fiction. Recruit stars like Willie Nelson, Woody Harrison, Michael Phelps. Law enforcement officials from LEAP, Safer Choice. And anyone else who would be a great canidate for heading a pro Marijuana ad. Time to open up the flood gates. Lets go get em.

  142. @Servando
Are you serious homey? What about alcohol? What about tobacco? Those are both drugs as much as weed. If it were legal, you wouldn’t get your weed from the same place as other drugs, thus diminishing the opportunities to get harder drugs. Now if you would, please stop raining on our parade and just chill on 420

  143. This commercial is great, there’s just two things missing.
You need an Engineer and a Scientist, to show that many brilliant and great people smoke herb.

  144. After all the persecution, the arrests, the demonization, the marginalization, the rebukes, the insults, the slander, and the lies, you assholes want to allow the government now to make money off the very product we’ve fought for years to become legitimate? I can see the politicians considering this for legalization, salivating over the new influx cold hard tax money coming into the coffers that they all mismanage at our expense. They have no right to tax it. They don’t tax tomatoes, potatoes, or peanut butter. They shouldn’t tax pot. I can smoke carrot tops if I want to and nobody taxes me for that. It should be treated as a food commodity. It should be so prevalent that we can throw a one pound bag in the shopping cart to spice up tonight’s spaghetti. We shouldn’t be compromising. We should be demanding that it be completely and totally decriminalized and left alone. You all can pay taxes on it if you want, but I’m looking forward to growing it with no hassles. This is not about some financial panacea for the ailing economy, limping and bleeding after it was mauled by the hounds of Wall Street. I’m planting it next to my basil in the herb garden.

  145. Response to Our Right, #151
If the makers of our Constitution were here today, they would be buying ammunition.

  146. I am going to have a magnetic sign made for my truck stating LEGALIZE!! I would like to ask Norml “May I use you logo and website on my new sign?”

  147. For a safer America, join norml today.. LEGALIZE!!!
Couldn’t we sue the govenment simply because cannabis laws were based on lies and no facts. Seems to me like we could.
I’ll send you a picture of my truck when it’s done..thanks for everything.

  148. Curious statistic, How many people were in jail at the end of alchohol prohibition? How many people today are in jail because of marijuana prohibition. That’s a lot of people to just send home at the end of prohibition. I love the idea of so many people being set free over pot but has the Department of Justice created a situation that they can’t stop? How about running that kind of data in commercials NORML.

  149. I believe if your old enough to fight for your country, drink alcohol,or support a family responsivly, you should be able to make the right choises for yourself. So if you want to sit down after a long day (or night) at work and smoke a little reefer, so be it.

  150. Stop the governemtns systematic Eradication of Hemp/Cannibas/Marijuana. Its not just an economic issue but an ecological and evnironmental issue. We need to rally the support of environmentalists to our cause. Stop the destruction of plants that have beneficial medical purpose. Just as they try to save the rainforest for the same purpose.

  151. Servando? Drugs? Death? You didn’t mention Legal Drugs did you? Yeah, I started with nicotine, moved on to beer, then went right into sniffing glue. I also did a lot of LSD and speed. I never smoked pot until I was 16 and it took me until I was 19 to find out that pot was the only drug without harm. I’m alive with a good job and getting close to retirement thank you!
I almost died when my doctor prescibed a drug that got an incorrect label put on it and I spent 3 days in intensive care. Many more deaths are recorded from LEGAL substances than your scary ass hard drugs. You really don’t know what you are saying as the deaths from “hard drugs’ are only a fraction compared to your legal ones that “our” govenment taxes and regulates. Where’s your fucking out cry now?

  152. NORML we need a new blog stating how much money was raised yesterday and how many new members joined!

  153. I watched the major news networks all day and never saw a single AD 🙁
Has Anyone actually seen one of these on TV? I want to see these ADs twice an hour …minimum.

  154. Thanks, NORML, love the add! I can’t believe how narrowminded some people can be.
#21 acts as if legalization mandates use. Just because a substance is legal does neither endorse it’s use, nor does it force anyone to use. Prohibition of alcohol should have taught a lesson as to the futility of prohibiting anything. If anything, prohibition only encourages use as well as fuelling the black market and availability.
Let’s continue this stupidity for a few more years and the drug cartels will really become a threat to our security and the cost of incarcerating non violent users might just bankrupt the country. Many States are already cutting education and other vital programs because of the budget shortfalls. While in Florida this past winter almost every time I watched the “news” the talk was about possible school closures or teacher lay-offs. Of course those reports were preceded by the ever present pro law enfarcement propaganda and another potr bust.

  155. Look, someone did a good job with the ad and it is a milestone to see them being aired. I’m afraid it kinda preached to the choir though. Coming from a cable TV background I know that it’s always been possible to by “local insertion” ads at very affordable rates. Having said that, one minute ads tend to be too long for Americans short attention spans. I’d love to see a short 30 sec with Willie Nelson. Ask him. He could get the Ear of the Hank Hill’s of America.

  156. I hope all had a great 420 yesterday. The thing that most disappointed me was the lack of news coverage. I know it was covered a little but, we had more 420 celebrations that those teabagger parties that faux news organized, and they got lots of news coverage. As for the people on this thread that oppose our movement…get a life! If you don’t want to smoke then don’t. Live and let live.
    Peace

  157. Maybe Willie Nelson would agree to be the NORML spokesperson. I’m very serious about this. It wouldn’t hurt his career and he has the ability to preach to the Red states. C’mon Willie, it’s your Patriotic Duty to end this. America and Weed are like chocolate and peanut butter.
    DRAFT WILLIE !!!!!

  158. Also everyone please go back and read #182 Lisa. Our hearts go out to an 18 year old who now is facing some serious consequences. Again a celebrity like Michael Phelps can get away with it, your average Joe cannot.
Back in the Day (70’s) we used to label some people “Cool”. They enjoyed the herb but were discreet enough not to get caught. Maybe some day things will be different, but not today.
We would also do well to listen to her other point. The more noise we make today, the more donations flow into all the Prohibition groups, AND THEY DO KNOW HOW TO USE MONEY AND VOTES.

  159. Keep these commercials going!
    Keep new one’s coming!
Don’t just make it a one day thing.
I wanna see professionals doing documentaries on the history of marijuana on the history channel laying down the fact’s.
I want to see all the head’s of every one of these organizations on the new’s once a week laying down the fact’s.
We the regular american people can’t do much. we need more of you people in the government/on the new’s doing their part.
If i could get on the New’s you bet your ass I’d have something to say that would change america’s mind’s but sadly I don’t believe i will ever have the chance.
Keep up the work NORML just don’t let it slow down. Keep it increasing.

  160. @ areign #191
While your doing your research why don’t you read the US constitution. Also ask yourself: Do I want the nanny government to watch over every move I make and keep me safe from harm? Cheeseburgers can be bad for your health too. Maybe we should outlaw them. Skydiving should be against the law for civilians based on some prohibitionists arguments. Tell me something you like to do areign that is not essential to your own survival and I can find an argument that it can be hazardous to you as well as those around you thereby making an argument for prohibition of said act. This has been done to all drugs, including Alcohol, yet excluding tobacco.
There should be no law criminalizing the actions of another so long as they are not infringing upon the rights of others. If I smoke a joint in my living room how am I hurting anyone but myself? There are far worse things hazardous to your health than marijuana. Mainstream media is just one example.

  161. Update us Guys!!! How much was donated? Who ACTUALLY aired the PSA?? Where’s the final cut that made TV??! (because a few of us don’t get G4…) I need the info here….

  162. Makes me recall the Free at Last Martin Luther King speech if only it would come true.
Stop the greed and racist behind the war on drugs. Its all for a few greedy corporations that stand to lose money and our representatives that take millions every year to continue to enslave us. Stop the war on US.. Now please!
    Cherokee Fred Jesus

  163. i fully agree with norml, i have worked with the st louis chapter of norml before.
we all have the momentum and the dedication. we need to take this further. let us all organize rallies at the cancer centers across the land. write letters to all the media and get exposure to this.
the more we can get shown about this, the less the opposition has to lie about to keep it illegal.
now everyone needs to write, call and bug their local cancer treatment centers, go to support groups and offer information, write to your local government as well as federal government, tell your friends and neighbors, if you have the money donate to norml, and use the facts.
dont let anyone bait you into a name calling contest, just walk away, you can’t open a closed mind.
    ty for your time
    JellyBean

  164. Can we do anything about the stereotypes next? This is my biggest gripe at present as all this “unwashed hippie” talk is NO DIFFERENT than “black people like malt liquor and chicken wings” it is OFFENSIVE, especially for those of us who hold jobs & smoke only in our off hours.

  165. My point in the above (208) being that it’s hard to enact REAL change when you are the only “acceptable” stereotype left.

  166. I donated buy Credit Card, What are the chances of getting trouble over this? i keep reading about people asking the same question, can anyone help with this. I’m as clean as soapy warm water but will they pull the stopper from my sink, so to say.

  167. i think someone said this but I think it must be echoed~
the phrase in the ad says of every race and creed.
    and it’s all white people.
    really missed on that one.
    we’ll get there soon~
    i’m sober till it’s legal
    S.T.I.L.

  168. I see a lot of complaints about the government taxing pot. These seem ridiculous to me. Pot should be legal, and like any other domestically grown and sold product should be taxed. There is nothing wrong with the taxing of marijuana and I would be happy to pay taxes for the right to smoke a joint.

  169. Cnn or any news source needs to do a national poll again so we can all prove to Fox that it wasnt internet trolls (hackers) that come up with the Townhall meeting # 1 question then what will they say

  170. Wheres the commercials? What is the time frame of the commercials? I recorded several hours of several different shows where the commercial is supposed to air with my DVR and saw now NORML commercial.

  171. It’s about time we had some pro-marijuana ads out there on T.V.! I’m getting so sick and tired of watching those Above The Influence commercials! We know what you’re doing ONDCP! Your days are numbered!

  172. They need a better commercial next time. The laughing at the end ruins it and there were no facts or statistics…

  173. I believe you should try to buy airtime on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. Adult Swim has obvious smokers in the shows. Tim & Eric reference it all the time in all their shows.

  174. This is amazing. I am so happy that this commercial delivers the RIGHT message. Doctors getting their license taken away? Cancer patients arrested for taking their medicine?! Thank god we’re stopping this.

  175. Whitmorris Langmire sounds like a prison guard with not much of a resume. He has to talk like that, no matter how stupid it sounds. He’s fighting for his livelyhood and too stupid to find honest work.

  176. It’s sad. Marijuana reform took a back seat on the news on 4/20 to the 10th aniversary of Columbine.

    RE:
    Supporter, I agree.
    – The War on some ‘Drug-Plant Species’ is ecologically-damaging and environmentally-destructive. – Government-Mandated Extinction of medically-useful / beneficial plants,
(those containing compounds necessary for optimum health and freedom from disease),
is, in essence, making life itself illegal.

  178. I thought the commercial was a little too cute and contrived. In addition, the commercial is missing a vital component. It needs to address people who have chronic and painful conditions that need medical marijuana to help relieve the pain. For thousands of people, the pain pills they are prescribed, are no longer effective for relieving pain for their condition. And also have too many side effects. The commercial should explain how these people with chronic pain are suffering as a result of being denied medical marijuana.

  179. Has any one seen one on TV ???? I keep looking.
I thought that we would get some extra air time from the news about the adds…
    I don’t think they have aired yet…..

  180. CENSORED??? – I live in Port Townsend, Washington and subscribe to ‘Broadstripe Cable.’ Can anyone tell me if the NORML commercials are running in my area? I have yet to see ANY on CNN, Fox News Channel, Fuse, FX Networks, G4, CNN’s Headline News and Spike TV. I know ‘liberal stations’ like MSNBC, and BRAVO are not offered here. Many commercials running nationally are preempted by local advertising and Broadstripe’s own self promotions that run often to the point of annoyance.

  181. I just saw a news bit that stated; and I quote ” In Texas if you get caught advertising the sale of your baby it is a class A mis. !! But I’m sure, ya know, that an ounce of ganja is prob. a class felony sumthin’…..bullshit man.

  182. RE: to 213 Vote Like a Beast
Very insightful, I wish NORML would have consulted you first! And using Willie Nelson as a spokesperson is a fantastic idea!

  183. Anyone wondering if they are on t.v. yet. I saw one on MSNBC just the other day. And though I know its been mentioned I still read like one or two complaints about the laughing. They did cut this out. So I say just keep an eye out and you might see it.

  184. I too have been watching MSNBC here in NC on Dishnetwork and have not seen a single add. Are they running at 3AM when noone is watching and what time slots did NORML purchase????

  185. I’ve yet to see any NORML commercials either.
NORML needs to either start airing their commercials already or give us an explanation NOW.
A lot of people donated and expect you to hold up your end of the bargain. Don’t lose their support, NORML.

  186. GA Gov. Sonny Purdue has found a new way to combat the rising costs of inprisoning all these potsmokers.
Prisons now have more power to charge inmates for
their medical costs while behind bars.
Gov. Sonny Perdue signed a measure into law Tuesday that allows state and county corrections officials to draw up regulations to
deduct the money for some medical costs from inmates accounts.
It excludes costs related to pregnancies and chronic illnesses, which include diabetes, cancer and renal disease.
Prisons are constitutionally required to provide medical care to
    inmates.

    RE:
    Greg,
    – I believe the ‘ad-time‘ was purchased on / from
    selected cable outlets‘,
    (i.e. local, terrestrial cable-companies),
not the cable / satellite ‘networks‘ themselves,
(which would be cost-prohibitive at this point).
    – – HOWEVER . . . the ads are also available online;
(14 different NORML Marijuana Law Reform ads on YouTube,
which you can email to anyone with broadband access).
    http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=FCCDE10CF60ECBCC
    ***
NORML – Is there or will there be a way to download these ads, to burn to DVD-R, to share with
those who don’t have broadband, cable, nor a computer?
(Or don’t have a computer with the latest OS or hardware).

  188. I believe the commercials should be more aggressive than this. It got the point across that everyone smokes weed and for different reasons but it didn’t touch the hypocrisy of the issue.
We could have one taylored for each state: In Texas its a class A misdemeanor to be caught selling your baby. A bag of weed, however, its a class A FELONY.
We could have commercials that compares weed to beer, cigs, or pharmaceuticals and mention how many die from these things a year. Then mention how weed isn’t documented in killing anyone.
We could drill the economic truth of a legalization surplus. If they would stop spending billions locking up our nations youth every year and instead legalized a popular commodity.

  189. That is a bad idea. So now people are going to get busted for Marijuana and go to jail. You cant make money in jail/prison so basically if you dont have money saved your family is now suffering for this joke the government call “the war on drugs”. The so called war on drugs is a bunch of lies the government feeds the us to make money. I saw an article about this, and it was talking about how it was only going to hurt the familys of these people because most long time prisoners have no money.

  190. I don’t watch tv, but I do watch a lot of stuff on the internet, especially on HULU.com.
I’d love to see ads there.

  191. I just heard many states are looking at how they can use inmates as slave labor. Allowing them to preform services for corporations and keeping the money to offset the expense of keeping people locked up.
It is growing like a virus so many people depend on the billions wasted for their income. I say redirect the effort of these many people and the money wasted to help our people not put more of them in jail to become slaves of the state…
    CFHJ

  192. It’s not “all white people” there are at least two people in that ad who don’t look white at ALL to me

  193. where are thete comercials being place to run…. it is 3:09 pm where I’m is 4/21/2009 and I havn’ see one yet.. I’m in Southern TENn But I though they were to beall ov the place on CNN and other channel lik them
    Ray

  194. NORML last update was 4/19… Today is 4/22.. hmmmmmmmm
No Marijuana in the news i guess.. i Live in Oklahoma no ads yet seen.

  195. Someone used the argument about cheeseburgers being bad for you and next on the list of potential illegal items to face the American public. Oddly enough that argument about the nanny government problem is slowly coming to light in many forms.
Back in the early 90’s most people really didn’t think much of the social satire presented in movies such as Demolition Man. I really wish they would stop and reconsider what they’ve voted for repeatedly; directly or indirectly.
The problem we have is that most “parents” are scared into making dumb decisions. Its easy to do when you take the pressures of life and compound them onto the sleep deprived or the monetarily challenged. They’ve slowly gained momentum into supporting all sorts of things I think they will regret in their sunset years.
While I will admit there has been in increase in overall obesity etc in the US, the open movement to punish people via open discrimination and slander/libel has been much in tune with the War on XXX approaches. As if bombing people with shame will change the fundamental nature of the food supplies and education systems for nutrition.
Long story short: Too many people small “perfect people” groups in the US have the ear of the legislatures. Most of these measures are “safe issues” and see little protest as they slowly ratchet away your freedoms.
Civil liberties in the US are starting to become more and more like a wedding ceremony: Speak up now or forever hold your peace.

  196. #96 Ruben Says: “Get your asses over here, to the Netherlands. We got plenty of Marijuana for you guys”
Ruben: Would love to be able to do just that, have any suggestions for a married couple that will both soon be 60 years of age ? Where will we work ? Where will we find a reasonably priced two bedroom apartment that’s quiet ?
My husband and I went on NORML’s Sensible Amsterdam Tour in January of 2007. It was a blast. My husband does not smoke but he loved the place so much that ever since our visit he says quite often, “let’s move to Amsterdam”.
He says this in part because I need the herb for medical reasons but most importantly he just simply loved the tolerance that is so apparent.
And yes, I’ve searched the web for hours looking at jobs there, read about apartments for rent (apartments are expensive), and so on. It would be easier if we knew some people there but we don’t.

  197. What TRUTH does for tobacco products is what we need for cannabis… but the complete opposite.
For example, bill boards with facts, more commercials, the kick in the balls truth that the government needs to wake up and address the situation with all the facts, the pros and the cons.

  198. i live in maryland with direct tv and i watch cnn from 2pm to 7pm everyday and have not seen the ad aired between those times
also willie nelson a spokes person excellent idea

  199. Those of you who didn’t see the ad don’t worry. I don’t live in Missouri but I’m a show me kinda guy. Anyone who’s ever read my post know’s how skeptical I am. And I did see the ad during That 70’s Show on FX via DISH NETWORK, I have it on my DVR. It was the April 20th 4:30 – 5:00 pm episode. Which can only mean that NORML bought at least some time at the network level. An ad purchased on the network could not be censored locally. I produced commercial’s for local cable for 5 years, so I know how this works. So, this time, I was impressed with NORML.

  200. Here’s Willie’s script.
If we could demonstrate just 5 percent of the vote in the next congressional elections, no one in congress would get any tougher on pot, in fact they would suddenly not even know how to pronounce marijuana (heck they wouldn’t know how to pronounce pot).
If we could demonstrate just 10 percent of the vote in the next elections, congress would pass almost any reform we want.
If we could demonstrate 20 percent of the vote in the next congressional election, THEY WOULD NO LONGER HAVE ANY OTHER CHOICE.
    YES WE COULD !!!!!!
    P.S. Willie, bring your guitar.

  201. Even better, not only was it on during That 70’s Show. It was between a SUBWAY commercial and a Promo for the film Rush Hour. MMMMM Subway

  202. Glad Norml and MPP decided to cut out the giggling at the end. Havent seen any of the ads in Illinois yet but am really looking forward to them being aired right on time for SB 1381 and HB 2514. Hopely Illinois will become the 14th state to legalize medical cannabis !
[Editor’s Note: MPP was not involved.]

  203. Oringal quote by: whitmorris
“If you really want to get marijuana legalized, you should jump in a time machine and go back and talk some shit with George Washington. Bunchof fucking idiots.”
I love you and forgive your actions.
Dirty hippies. They’re so hard to offend.
Why can’t I just make them ANGRY? 🙂
Can’t we all just get along….? We don’t question your lifestyle choices (publicly). We just want the same favor.
    No harm, no foul… right?

  204. NORML needs a lot more money to buy more air time. We also need some in your face, quick yet deep statements like “more people die each year from peanut butter than marijuana” or something along those lines.
The average American’s attention span isn’t too long, so you need to blitz them with some facts that aren’t too commonly known. 700,000 arrested a year for possession, or 20 million in total (I think the ad already says this), No recorded human fatality from overdose, etc. These are all things that caught my attention before I was for legalization and was anti-drug (I was just a kid and didn’t know better, cut me some slack).
Perhaps take the financial route and show some figures about the number of jobs it can create? The economy is on everyone’s mind right now, so that’s always a good angle.

  205. As Ed Says, we have to blitz the media. 10 and 15 second spots are less expensive and can convey effective messages like: cannabinoids in cannabis shrink cancer tumors and fight drug-resistant staph infections – and this is a plant we have banned? Or: “Regulation is law and order.. Prohibition is a free for all. Children can get their hands on marijuana more easily than alcohol and tobacco because marijuana is not regulated. End prohibition now, and protect your children.” or words to that effect. And we can think of radio, too. Even cheaper.

    RE:
    Vote Like A Beast,
    – I’m enthused to hear that you saw the NORML ad on Dish Network!
(That NORML also has the ads on satellite, not just local cable-systems).
    – I disagree w/ Lisa (#182), that these PSA’s create a ‘false sense-of-security’ in young adults.
    If anything,
    The ads COUNTERACT induced-complacency by some pot-friendly sitcoms, movies and stand-up comedians;
    Act as a wake-up call to get involved in cannabis law-reform;
And serve as a reminder of the present injustice and harsh legal consequences people are STILL suffering for something MUCH LESS TOXIC than alcohol.
And…that cannabis NEEDS TO BE RE-LEGALIZED, ’cause it’s not COMPLETELY so, YET! 🙁
(Not even temporarily for the third Monday of April…)

    RE:
    Ed,
    This is true,
    (and easily mentioned in a 10 sec ‘ad-blurb’) 🙂

  207. “CNN, CNBC, Fox News Channel, Fuse, FX Networks, G4, MSNBC, CNN’s Headline News and Spike TV”
Unfortunately, as a 23 yo male those are all channels I watch regularly. We need to connect with a demographic that isnt as ‘high’ on cannabis as the <25 male group. Channels like Lifetime, Bravo, Oxygen, History Channel, Fishing Network, cbs/abc(daytime during soaps),Home & Garden HGTV, etc… get my drift?

  208. #247– Georgia is so backwards we are one of the largest hubs for drugs, but we will be one of the last States to legalize. I have lived here my entire life and wonder where all of the “stick in the mud people” live. I have meet many people as I own a business, and have meet 5 people in my 45 year life that have never tried it and all but one of those people believe it should be legal. I talk about this issue non-stop, since the Appalachian Drug Task force came into my house unannounced at 4:30 in the morning 5 years ago and pulled my 18 year old out of bed by her hair with a gun to her head. Shortly after that Kathryn Johnson was murdered by Atlanta Police. I thank my lucky stars when my daughters alarm went off to wake her up to head to school that the dumb ass didn’t get scared and pull the trigger. I live in a small town, but the sheriff that pulled this kind of stuff for 4 years has been replaced. Some want him back, but I promise he will never be sheriff here again.

  209. How long does it take for all 7,770 commercials to be aired? Any ideas on how many per day? Can NORML purchase more everyday?

  210. A-MEN to that, GA Sunshine. Short-sighted folks like that should not be in leadership roles. We need leaders and elected officials(big and small) to see and weigh both sides of an issue; and then make a reasonable decision. This old song and dance of prohibition and intolerance needs to die out with last century.

  211. Since 4/20 Ive seen 4 ads from the lying side and have yet to see one of our ads.
If the cost of the ads are accurate, then why am I not seeing one ad every hour? Just my donations alone should be enough to see one an hour on any given station.
Are the networks refusing to air the ads or something?

  212. There is no justification for government control over Americans’ personal lives. I agree with general laws that you cannot kill people, etc, but what you do in the comfort of your home is only your business. We should all be able to do as we please as long as we aren’t hurting any one else.

  213. If presidents admit using marijuana, how can it still be illegal? Oh the hypocrisy. Anyway, a belated happy 4/20 to everyone 🙂

    RE:
    Brinna,
    *** Your first message example,
“Cannabinoids in cannabis shrink cancer tumors…”
might seem unbelievable to those who fall back to lies they have been taught…such as…
“Smoked marijuana contains 10x carcinogens than tobacco…”
(Actually, smoking is NOT the only means of consuming cannabis, i.e.
tinctures, edibles and herbal-vaporizers are safer, ‘smokeless‘ methods
    ).
“Marijuana’s not medicine, it contains mold-spores, mildew, pesticide-residues…”
(Actually, these are a result of poor handling inherent in a compromised product under prohibition.
Food-grade / medical-grade cannabis contains NONE of these hazards).

*** Your second example CAN’T be emphasized enough!
(“Regulation is law and order.. Prohibition is a free for all. . . . “)
    – So often, I hear prohibitionists conflate the present drawbacks of
illegality with the imagined hazards of re-legalized cannabis,
when in fact, a regulated system of age-limits and quality-control is what we need!

  215. its about freakin time someone put out a positive ad about pot. with all these “ABOVE THE INFLUENCE” commercials people don’t want to get all the positive info on pot because they think its WAYYYYYYYYY bad.

  216. While I support any argument that can convince boobus americanus that legalization is right, it would be nice to see the “freedom” argument instead of the taxation and economic salvation argument.
As a freedom loving individual I recongnize that more government equals less freedom in EVERY case. The economic argument for legalization and taxation only serves to give more money to more big government at a time when they should be dismantling leviathan.
Further, the push for regulation and taxation will only serve to undermine the freedom that we all should have to grow what we want and sell to friends, family, whomever, without government harrassment. A plan based on regulation and taxation will just enhance the role of the revenuer to steal an alcohol reference who will be kicking down doors arresting people for growing and selling without paying taxes. It won’t matter that your crop of 10 plants is what you need for the year until the next harvest, you will be labelled a “distributer” who is selling without paying taxes.
So please consider the ramifications of your arguments. We need to restore FREEDOM in this country, not just legalize pot. If you still have to worry about the man because you don’t have a tax stamp, how is legalization doing any good at all??

not to be demonized or made extinct.
    – That’s why we all need to live Above The IGNORANCE:
    http://www.abovetheignorance.org/

  218. Has anybody actually seen any of these commercials? Since 4/20 I have been watching the TV like a hawk and have not seen even one, what, do they come on @ 2:00am? when do we see them plastered all over the place like the “above the influence” commercials?

  219. I love you norml, you are doing things that evoke a lot of passion in the smoking community. we are a community of well educated and peaceful people. lets get this done so we can all live less anxious lives! I have suffered the persecution of the law and its time that this ends.

  220. Here’s an interesting idea that I doubt will ever happen…What if every single person in the U.S. that currently smokes weed would just go down to the local police department and lite up? How could they deal with that? Would they just let everyone get away with it? If they did, that could be great argument for anyone in the future for court. Or they could just arrest the supposed 14+ million…HA HA! I think that NORML ,being probably the largest organization that is promarijuana, should organize some kind of non-violent, illegal national protest. With such a large amount of supporters, there is absolutely nothing the government can do but either take action against the supporters(arrest), which would crumble America due to that large support base, or they would have to submit. And for those who say that change would be too quick, well time will tell if marijuana should actually be legalized. Things will go to shit if legalization is wrong, or people will adjust and realize. Besides, change has been occurring for years now, this would just be a larger step than those preceeding.

  221. I felt like a left out a few things in my proposal. There would be absolutely no demands of any kind. The only course of action would be smoking a “j” while gathering around a police station. The only illegal activity that should be partaken is the smoking of chron. Although that would irritate/infuriate many people, there would be no point in making them that much more irritated/infuriated. Just smoke that weed and watch how the government handles it. Something would have to happen; Every action has an equal, opposite reaction. There is absolutely no way that jailing everyone would be plausable. My guess is that the officials would just fine you and make you take some kind of lame class or community service. It would then take everyone to just ignore there sentence and would put the government back in checkmate. Once again, the government would then have the same problem to deal with. This may not be as well thought out as it should be or even the best idea, but with the shear number and size of support for marijuana legalization, there has to be some kind of physical action that we can do to catalyze the inevitable…LEGALIZATION!!!

  222. My comment is for the idiot, John Carnevale. Boy, you have been in D.C. too long. Did you fall off the turnip truck or did someone push you off? Get out of the closet and read some scientific data about marijuana as a medicine. Wake up John Boy. Get a life or something. Just saying that marijuana has no medical value is the height of ignorance. We have passed the thing of no medical value a long time ago. I hope that when you get to be my age that you suffer with as much pain as I do and you have to use synthetic pills for it.
Signed an ignorant hillbilly in WV that knows more than you.

  223. I agree. You John Carnavale are an antisocial. You are the minority standing in the way of freedom. Leave me alone. I am an adult and quite capable of making sound decisions for myself. You and your ilk make me live like a criminal in my ‘free’ country. Shame on you.You cannot recoup the damage that has been done to generations of peace loving citizens who are trapped in your insidious web of false propaganda.Go away.

  224. I wonder how many people have died from alcohol poisoning, liver failure, drunk drivers and just drunken stupidity in general. As far as I know not one person has ever died a cannabis related death. Plus I have heard straight from the mouths of many police officers that they would much rather deal with someone who was stoned than someone who was drunk. Not saying I’m an Anti-Alcohol kinda gal but if the government says all the negative side effects of liquor are worth the financial payoff of the industry then why not cannabis. I know many who are otherwise wonderful people but they have allowed alcohol to ruin there lives. If any group of recreational drug users are mindless self destructive zombies it is most definitely not the stoner set. In fact in my personal experience the cannabis users I’ve met tend to be very open-minded, healthy eating, active, creative and quite intelligent people. Basically I hope that the majority of America will see the light and change their attitudes toward cannabis. And thank you NORMAL because TV ads will drastically help. Cannabis should be treated like alcohol in America. You should have to have a license to sell it, it should be taxed, and you should have to be 21 to buy it. With the money being wasted on this “war on drugs”, the money being lost out on by not taking advantage of the profit to be made off of America’s biggest cash crop and the loss of the valuable hemp products we could be producing; we are doing our country a grave disservice by keeping it illegal. Why should ignorant, old school ways of thinking dictate 21st century laws? How is it at all constitutional to lock people up for possession of a plant that doesn’t hurt anyone? Cannabis being illegal is causing far more harm to the American people than good. Kids come across harder drugs because to often they get cannabis from someone who is in the business of selling the harder stuff as well. Wanna be gangster crimes are committed everyday because of the illegal drug seller’s lifestyle. Don’t we want a drastic decrease of such events? Don’t we want to take the goodness this plant can provide and harvest it for our economy’s benefit? Don’t we want to use hemp to make higher quality products? Don’t we want sick people in pain to be able to live out the rest of their days being functional, happy and pain free? We are currently wasting a valuable plant our planet can produce naturally. It’s the 21st century America, Wake up! Cannabis should be legal because smoking cannabis is NORMAL!!!

  225. Second hand tax payers, dirty hippeys,Inmates and take away your right to vote. Oh wait thats what happened to all the blacks? Give you a department of corrections NUMBER and the big money WON’T WORRY ABOUT YOU VOTING. IF YOU HAVE BEEN TO prison you CAN NOT VOTE.
HEY WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RIGHT PERSUE HAPPINESS.
Oh thats right pot smokers have long hair and need to be in jail. With the black man doing 15 to life for three rocks of baking soda and cocane mixed and called crack. I have never seen any onE overdose on pot. now asprin i took to many one night for pain and went to bathroom and throwed up blood. However I never did that again. Please stop all the hate as you are ok and I am ok. Surely our U.S.A. can find other ways of making money other than locking up the poor and taking there kids on and on Thank you and God Bless the U.S.A.

  226. I’m hoping this reaches the right place… I enjoyed the commercial. I have an idea I’m not sure how to get off the ground, maybe you could help. Lets round a petition, collect as many names as possible over the next three and a half years, set it on obama’s desk, and let him know the amount of people who won’t vote for him if he allows prosecution on even recreational users. This is a democracy. Lets all remember it’s not the job of our government to police us based on an elitist ideology. It’s their job to police us as the majority decides. You can find a CNN pole online that says 95% want it legal. isn’t that a majority?
I myself have been saddled with a mental illness. The problems I see with only allowing marijuana as medicine is; people with no problems will fake them for the free pass. I myself have found no relief from my psychotic episodes, marijuana waylays my bouts but historically you should brew in a tea which noone can afford to do for several reasons. First, the cost would be outragous without growing you own. And Second, if you had enough to make a potent tea you would undoubtedly be arrested for a long time. Please help me with this petition. If Obama’s email recieves enough names this might help. thanks.

  227. First off, it should be stated that anyone that disagrees with legalizing/decriminalizing pot is totally justified, and I would happily fight for their right to make their opinion known.
It should also be said however, that any actual efforts to fight, dissuade, or insult and demean our points of view on pot better not be religious, because judgement is reserved for god and god alone, and had better not consider themselves good Americans, as this country was founded on the freedoms of all, the beliefs of all, and has evolved to encompass the dreams of all. Make your choices, I don’t mind. Teach your children that mankind was born of the decisions of a man, a woman, and a talking snake. That’s your choice. Leave me my choices, and respect my right to make them.
    Thank you NORML
P.S. This whole argument that ‘stoners’ are -always- stoned doesn’t hold any water. If you’re drunk at work, you’ll get in trouble, and every ‘stoner’ will be held to the same standards as that. Cigarettes are legal, and horrible. Booze is legal, and horrible. Do some actual reading of unbiased information. Cannibus is -not- horrible, and it’s not dangerous. Stop being judgemental, because it just makes you look silly.

  234. This is a fantastic ad campaign and should definitely get more air-time. I have an idea for a printed ad campaign that could also be effective to portray the message of legalization to those who stigmatize mariuana, titled “Am I a Criminal?” It’s a simple message along the lines of the “Got Milk” campaign.
If anyone who is actively involved in the campaigns is reading this, please contact me. Thanks.
