Marijuana Pedal Power: Grassroots Cyclists Takes Root In Iowa

Hello all, if you do not recall I contacted all of you a few months ago asking permission to use logos from each organization to create a team cycling jersey for the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI).

We have decided on “Grassroots Cyclists” as our team name and we have an initial order of jerseys in hand. We will be completing a reorder so I wanted to contact all of the organizations to see if anyone within would like one.

Would each organization kindly distribute this message to see if there is any interest?

The jerseys are $50 a piece. I am paying $40; the additional $10 will be used for shipping and to make custom koozies to hand out on the road; it will be our way of putting a tiny billboard in people’s pockets… or on their beverages. The jerseys are a 3/4 zip down 135 gram micro-polyester (wicks away moisture)

Attached are photos of myself and my girlfriend sporting the jerseys. ASA and SSDP logos are on each sleeve and NORML as you can see is on the side panels.

For jersey sizing or if you just want to see the company we are ordering from click this link:

For anyone interested I need a name, contact #, desired size, and desired cut no later than June 20!!! (cut and size can be determined from the link above). Payment will be figured out while the order is processing. Email me at address below to place an order.

Thanks for everyone’s support,

Colby Fangman

  1. This is an awesome shirt I would love to wear it out on the town. It is a great icebreaker at a crowded bar. I can spread the word and inform people. I would love to purchase a XL cycling shirt. Thank you please contact me.Keep up the good work, WEed NEED CHANGE!!! OH and FREE MARC EMERY!!! Now if only we could get a soccer shirt… Hmmm

  2. Great idea! The shirt that wicks away moisture is a downside for me though… otherwise I would be supporting this.

The point OF sweating is to cool the body. When you wick the sweat away, you have less water on your body to cool it, thus making your body lose most of its water much more rapidly.

I do love the idea though, and I’m glad you are giving support for legislation through very interesting means!

  3. I am interested in buying one, but the link from NORML seems not to bring to the purchesing option.

  4. This is a brilliant idea! The design is absolutely stunning– I love the MLK quote. I wish you guys luck on your ride!

  5. i dont cycle so much on the road as i do in the mountans and coastal regions of california. as an avid cycler i LOVE the theme for your jerseys and saw that you were in the process of making coozies! i am also an avid drinker and would love to pay for 1 or 2 of your norml coozies to support your team! get back to me and good LUCK.

  6. Other than a GIANT pot-leaf on the back, that shirt has everything I want in a cycling jersey.

I’d even use that for my run jersey.

I think we should throw together a NORML triathlon team or run team, a stereotype destroyer and just generally fun as hell.

  7. Very nice product produced by some very wonderful activist! You know this is fun, easier than most projects to promote MMJ/MJ and you’d really be a splash if you started the rumor that you can smoke the shirts! : ) LOL !

  8. Very cool, I like to wear T shirts while cycling.. I hate the feel of that jersey material on my skin or i’d order one.

  9. Brilliant idea! Now maybe I’d better get my bike out of the garage and use it.

  10. Hey everybody we are glad to see as much interest as we have received.

I want to clarify in case there is confusion that this is a cycling jersey of a fabric similar to jersey type under armor.

Sizing is at Right below sizing are the cut descriptions. I need your cut preference to complete the order.

To get your name on the reorder list you must send an email to with your name, a contact phone #, your size, gender, and choice of cut. Without any part of this information I cannot complete the order. If you send everything I need you will get a confirmation when you are added to the list

    Thanks again for the interest,

  11. I want one that says on the back

“you’re letting a pothead beat you”.

    …and then go lay down some 6 minute/miles at a local 5k.

  12. I’ve heard that people are 5 to 11 times more creative when using cannabis. Another great example wouldn’t you say. Ride on crusaders for freedom! One more brick in the road to lifting prohibition.

  13. I’m going to do my best and meet these good people, possibly the Mason City/Clear Lake…….the Spin Doctors are playing the Surf Ballroom RAGBRAI

Iowa — State legislative leaders have dropped plans to have a committee study legalization of medical marijuana. The decision could lessen the chances of a full debate on the controversial issue next year.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said in February that legislators would appoint a committee to study the idea over the summer and fall. If that committee could agree on a recommendation, he said, legislators would consider the idea after they returned to the Statehouse in January.

However, the Des Moines Democrat said Monday that those plans changed after he realized an old piece of Iowa Code says the Iowa Board of Pharmacy may set rules allowing medical uses of marijuana.

“There’s no need for an interim committee, because it’s already law,” he said.

McCarthy said the ball is in the board’s court now.

The pharmacy board voted unanimously in February to recommend that legislators change the classification of marijuana in a way that would make it easier to use for legitimate medical purposes. Board members noted at the time that a decades-old piece of Iowa law already appeared to allow that, but they said the intent of that law was unclear.

Lloyd Jessen, the pharmacy board’s executive director, said Monday that board members don’t want the responsibility McCarthy is suggesting they have.

“Even though that code section is still in the code, it’s not the Board of Pharmacy’s role to implement a medical marijuana program,” he said
