On Friday the government’s war on marijuana consumers claimed yet another victim.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, metro police shot and killed a 21-year-old father-to-be while serving a search warrant for marijuana.

A 21-year-old father-to-be was killed last Friday night by a Las Vegas Police Department narcotics officer serving a search warrant for marijuana. Trevon Cole was shot once in the bathroom of his apartment after he made what police described as “a furtive movement.”
Police have said Cole was not armed. Police said Monday they recovered an unspecified amount of marijuana and a set of digital scales. A person identifying herself as Cole’s fiancée, Sequoia Pearce, in the comments section in the article linked to above said no drugs were found.
Pearce, who is nine months pregnant, shared the apartment with Cole and was present during the raid. “I was coming out, and they told me to get on the floor. I heard a gunshot and was trying to see what was happening and where they had shot him,” Pearce told KTNV-TV.
According to police, they arrived at about 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Mirabella Apartments on East Bonanza Road, and detectives knocked and announced their presence. Receiving no response, detectives knocked the door down and entered the apartment. They found Pearce hiding in a bedroom closet and took her into custody. They then tried to enter a bathroom where Cole was hiding. He made “a furtive movement” toward a detective, who fired a single shot, killing Cole.
… According to Pearce and family members, Cole had no criminal record, had achieved an Associate of Arts degree, and was working as an insurance adjustor while working on a political science degree at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He was not a drug dealer, Pearce said.
“Trevon was a recreational smoker. He smoked weed, marijuana. That’s what he did,” she told KTNV-TV. “They didn’t have to kill him. We were supposed to get married next year, plan a black and white affair,” she said. “He was all I ever knew, we were gonna make it.”
In May, NORML blogged about another sickening case — that one from Columbia, Missouri (you can watch the disturbing and graphic video here) — of ‘cops gone wild’ in the war on weed. But the similarities between the two cases go beyond narcotics officers breaking down the doors of private residences and discharging their weapons.
In both instances, these tragic raids took place in regions of the country that have ‘decriminalized’ marijuana possession. That’s right. In Nevada, lawmakers in 2001 enacted statewide legislation defelonizing minor marijuana possession — making the offense a fine-only misdemeanor. (Separately, Nevada voters in 2000 decided to amend the state’s constitution to exempt medical users from arrest.) And in 2004, some 60 percent of Columbia, Missouri voters approved a local ordinance that sought to prohibit local cops from from arresting anyone for simple marijuana possession.
Yet, as the above tragedies illustrate, neither of these ‘half-a-loaf’ changes in law (decriminalization and medicalization) ultimately corrects the core problem and that is this: Police and politicians still accept the premise that this level of deadly force is appropriate to keep people from using marijuana.
That is why, while on the one hand NORML (obviously) supports cannabis medicalization and decriminalization efforts, we also recognize that these efforts fall woefully short for many Americans. After all, police in Las Vegas, Columbia, and elsewhere are not forcefully entering private homes and terrorizing families while executing search warrants for alcohol. But they are engaging in such behavior in communities that have medicalized and/or decriminalized marijuana. And unfortunately, they will continue to do so.
In short, the only way to fully protect all our citizens from these kinds of abhorrent events is through the legalization and regulation of marijuana for all adults.
Decriminalization and medicalization are first steps — not the end game. Ultimately only legalization and regulation can bring a long overdue end to the brutal war on marijuana consumers.

The state and federal governments are obviously not as intelligent as we all expect them to be. In all honesty, our gov’t would save incredible amounts of money by releasing prisoners with simple non-violent marijuana offenses as well as increase state and local tax revenue by selling marijuana in stores and charging tariffs on marijuana shipped over the border. The cannabis plant has more potential to bring us out of this economic recession than any other proposition made thus far.

Don’t give them any reason to put a bullet in you cause they’ll do it. They might even do it without a clear cut reason and say you provoked them to act out of character. Anything to cover their “furtive” hides. “Furtive” can be used to describe the true intentions of our “law enforcement.” Not all officers are bad but does one bad apple ruin the bunch? Opinions vary. No one wants to come out and tell the mass that all the money being spent, lives being ruined and blood being shed was due to false truths and lust for control.
This is how much life means to some. Why couldn’t the officer switch from his sidearm to a taser? No time? He had enough time to break into a residence, sweep it and locate the occupants. Here’s an idea. Maybe you should have one officer with the sidearm and the other with a taser that way you don’t have to use lethal force in case someone makes a “furtive movement.” How can someone make a “furtive movement” when you have them in your sites? NARCS didn’t even find anything to substantiate the claims and someone lost their life. All because of your “intelligence” gathering. Wonder why people don’t trust enforcement or get antsy when police show up?

“An undisclosed amount of marijuana” usually means little to no marijuana, possibly shake in a discarded bag that they found dropped under a couch or something from a year ago.
Two of my long time friends were arrested about three years ago for possession of mmj, which was nothing more than a bag full of cleaned stems, a half gram bag of mmj and three pieces. The police made forced entry in the house (bruising one of my friend’s ribs with his nightstick when he pushed past the half opened door), physically destroyed their couches, chairs, beds, pillows and also ended up breaking their refrigerator by ‘accidentally’ breaking the compressor as they were searching UNDER THE FRIDGE.
All in all my friends lost between the two of them over 50,000 dollars in court/lawyer fees, drug court fees, another 1,000+ dollars in personal belongings and both of them had all the cash taken from their wallets when they were released. They were arrested by the Aberdeen Police Department in Aberdeen, Maryland.
Moral of the story: Don’t let police into your house unless they have a SEARCH WARRANT THAT IS SIGNED BY A JUDGE!

Does not the War on Drugs Constitute Domestic Terrorism? With the recent murders of decent individuals and people’s dogs, vis-a-vi the paramilitary breeches into private citizen’s homes, why then does this activity not constitute terrorism? I believe that it does, as defined by the US Federal criminal code (below). What I would like to know is why/how/who is allowing this violent and terrorist-like policy (which is a failure to society on every single possible level) to continue? Why are our politicians, who are *supposed to be* the voice of the people, sitting on idle hands as their own voters are being terrorized by our own government? It is truly baffling.
The United States has defined terrorism under the Federal criminal code. Section 18 U.S.C. §2331[51] defines terrorism as:

As a war historian, an experienced USMC Drill Instructor retired, I can tell you the one hard cold fact that stops any war that has ever been and that is BLOOD spilled in great amounts. When enough blood is spilled or in more understandable terms, when enough people have died, wars stop. There hasn’t been enough lives lost over prohibition to stop this war on marijuana advocates. As tragic as this story is and every story just like it and worse, is still not enough blood to end this war. To date, it’s not enough blood to convince Americans that it’s time to end the blood shed. I believe when someone of great importance has been killed over prohibition then and only maybe will Americans change their hearts and the way they think about marijuana users. well, the way I look at it if he wasn’t involved with illegal drugs in the first place, this wouldn’t have happened. Cops don’t go in to shoot people..but they have to worry about their own safety and their counterparts. Someone narced on his butt, another drug user (probably), so they did their job. His actions started the situation and unfortunately it ended bad. And a normal user never has their own scales, only dealers..I understand the life, been there done that…
Where is the violence in the drug community comin from? Maybe because it is an illegal drug they are sellin. There is no reduction in demand so we need a supply. Just because you make it illegal I can make a conscious decision that I aint hurtin nobody. I dont go through a list of laws and pick and choose which to break. This is ridiculous. It’s time for the people to take action. The best way to address this issue is to contact your local representatives. As strenuous as it sounds, the BEST way to do this is through a “hand written letter”. Politicians and such read letters more than you would think. I watched a seminar on how to do this: Write a formal letter voicing your opinion, anger, or what have you. Next make a copy of the original letter and send it a few days after the original.
-The next thing that we need to do is inform the uneducated. Tell your friends(primarily those who don’t smoke smoke and would otherwise not hear about this story) about this and similar injustices

We recently had an election here. I decided in advance that I would not vote for anyone that wants to continue marijuana prohibition. But guess what – I was not able to find out the views of any of the candidates on that subject 🙁 So, I didn’t vote. This is just so wrong!

Police are trained in paramilitary tactics; indeed usually police officers are prior military personnel, so it’s easy to see why they shoot for the kill. They are trained to do so, they’re all hyped up for action. Not only that, they resent peoples hatred for them both in their law enforcement career and in their military career. They believe they are the voice of reason, the sane, the elite. In reality they are typically unreasonable, ruled by anger, and sub moral in that they disregard the unalienable rights of the human race. They have tasers at their disposal, pepper filled paintball guns, rubber bullets, tear gas, but yet they use deadly force, “lead slugs”. They are nothing but paid murderers backed by an increasingly evil governmental body.
Police have killed tens of thousands of innocent citizens, countless non citizens at our boarders or during “war time”. Simple application of logic indicate some police must “want” to kill people, they kill for the thrill. It’s obvious some police officers are bored with the patrols, bored with the $40,000 a year salary, aggravated with the ignorant domestic calls, in short, getting in gun fights is what makes it exciting to be an officer of the law and they will use any excuse to pull their gun and shoot something.
Police are known for their raids It’s just that instead of killing African Americans at peace rallies or Latinos searching for work. Now, they kick in the door of anyone ole person. You are obviously not just in possession since that cannot exist without the others. Therefor you must be doing one of those other things to even have possession, yes?
Just the act of complying with orders given can result in the same fate for many. Regardless of when, why, or where. Law enforcement could stop feeling threatened if they would simply reign this crap in and stopped defending it.
I’m completely fearful of an underpaid, over-reactive, overworked, scared law enforcement office making a mistake because they know there is little chance of being penalized for their actions. Sad thing is I’m not one of the people breaking any laws. I just have an ever increasing outright disdain and fear of modern law enforcement because of posts like the one you made.
I think the same concept of complying with authority should be universal. Cops committing murder is not a mistake, its just murder. The public trust is earned, not given.

It is not a drug its an herb naturally occuring in gods plan. the reason its not legal is because it would wipe out man created drugs and can be grown by anyone with soil and light. drug companies dont want competition and have created marinol and other ineffective take offs to try to get the herb synthesized so that they can patent it and charge the fuck out of us. but when you can grow it they seethe with anger because they cannot capture the effects of herb. cops,lawyers,judges , prison guards love arresting and confiscating all that you own in the name of the war on citizens,oops I mean war on drugs.
