Facebook Billionaire Gives Money to Legalize Marijuana in California

I think it hard to imagine that other rich supporters of cannabis law reform are not going to follow Dustin’s lead and make a sizable donation in these last few weeks of the campaign as…everyone loves a winner!

An irony here is about a month ago Facebook refused to take FireDogLake’s ‘Just Say Now’ pro-cannabis law reform ads…blessedly, karma exists.

From Forbes:

Dustin Moskovitz confirmed tonight that he has recently given $50,000 in support of Proposition 19, which is seeking to legalize marijuana in California this November. He had previously donated $20,000 to supporters of the act, which would allow people 21 years old or older to possess, cultivate or transport cannabis for personal use and would permit local governments to  regulate and tax commercial production and sale of the substance. (Update: Dustin explains why he backs Prop 19.)
Not too many other billionaires have come out in favor of legalizing pot but one who has is Peter Lewis, who donated $12,800 to Oregon’s medical marijuana ballot this November, according to my colleague Clare O’Connor. (Read her September post). Lewis, who was arrested for drug possession in New Zealand a decade ago, has been a longtime supporter of the issue; he apparently smoked marijuana for pain relief after his left leg was amputated.

Moskovitz, who is now the America’s youngest billionaire and who is played by actor Joseph Mazzello in the just released Facebook movie “The Social Network,”  had no other comment at this time. Moskovitz left Facebook in 2008 and started Asana, a software company that allows individuals and small companies to better collaborate. The company, which has several of the same early backers as Facebook, lists some of its values as pragmatism, chill-ness and being a mensch. For now, we estimate that his entire $1.4 billion fortune comes from his 6% stake in Facebook.

  1. Thank god for a true American the is smart enough to REALLY care about protecting the kids, figting terroism, saving the tax payers billions of dollers, racist Jim Crowe enforcement, etc. The list of why to votes yes on prop 19 goes on and on.

He is smart enough to not believe all the lies that the people that are profiting from the war on drug have fed us all these years.

Thank you Dustin. You are a true patriot that cares about civil liberty.

Above is what I wrote on Forbes Blog

  2. Wow, a least we know that one of these guys knows what is really going on in the modern world and, not just some corporate jack off. It’s really great that this donation will be there to, help the campaign. And to also get more ads out there in this last month before the vote. We’re getting some good polling results now. 50% and climbing.

  3. The reason facebook blocks those images is because so many folks look at it at work. FB would lose millions of hits if it was determined NSFW! It is okay for HR to use FB as a poor man’s background check, but lord forbid it support something that is against HR’s bladder police!

  4. I like this guy. Not many rich folks would be so bold. I guess our foolish ways have not set in this great young man. Perhaps he will help other State bring change to these injustice on cannabis. Great to have him willing to aid CA.
You see CA. these United States of Americans are for and with you. Our dream is your victory, and thanks to folks from all over America who are like this young man and support a very good cause.
I can see the day whaen I can sit at the front of the bus. That day is coming and the great folks of CA is our tip of the sword, we American must push deep into this injustice and end it when our wayward government has not.
Oush on CA, we the poeple pray for your victory in Nov. We just know it is going to be a landslide vote.
CA is sending a clear statement to Washington, Step the F— off!

  5. Proposition 19 is not legalization. If you can be punished for growing marijuana or possessing marijuana (like you still can according to this proposition) then marijuana has not been legalized. Grow more than a five foot area of marijuana? You are in trouble! Have more than an ounce on you? You are in trouble! Use marijuana around a minor? You are in trouble! Use marijuana in public? You are in trouble!

    This is not legalization.

[Paul Armentano responds: Legalization is not defined as the absence of any regulation whatsoever — just the opposite. Legalization inherently brings with it regulations and market controls. Alcohol is controlled; tobacco is controlled; cell phones are controlled; your water and land use is controlled, etc etc etc. Prop. 19 is indeed legalization.]

  6. At least prop. 19 is a step in the right direction but as far as it being taxed, so much for freedom and liberty. Watch Washington state make it legal in 2011 with no taxes for at least two years, that is until the state legislators get their greedy hands on it.

  7. Omg if i had a bill I would give more than $70k that’s just too little if you’re absurdly rich but whatever! ANYTHING COUNTS! 😀

  8. One small step for man,One giant leap for mankind ! Thanks Dustin , from the rest of the America ! Yes on 19 !

  9. If I had Dustin’s money, I would have donated a hell of a lot more. That said, if I had the money, I’d cover the state of California with anti-Proposition 19 billboards that simply read, “SUPPORT MEXICAN DRUG CARTELS-VOTE NO ON PROP. 19.” Sometimes I think most people use their brains for little more than stuffing to hold their ears apart.

  10. If my maximum balance wasn’t just enough for food every day and in college i would donate. Dustin is good guy! Once Cali legalizes Washington next?

  11. This article was linked to on Slashdot.org this morning. Their website is very popular and I can’t believe they linked to this site, but they did! More exposure to Norml.org is a good thing!

  12. It’s great to see heavy weights donating to pro-marijuana groups. It seems more often that well-known names are donating to groups that are anti-marijuana. California has been the model for all other states to follow and I fear, living in Arizona, that Arizona voters will be discouraged to vote pro medical marijuana this November. Conservatives will use the California law as a scare tactic to try and stop people from voting yes on medical marijuana.

  13. this is gonna be the new industry to save america. ok i can go to the store and by a bottle of ever clear. but i cant buy a joint?????and if im in pain, i can get oxy cotton.but i cant get a joint? this is 2010,,,and im ready for change obama, wtf
