Senator Sanders Co-Sponsors The Marijuana Justice Act

Today, Senator Bernie Sanders joined Senator Cory Booker on a live stream for a conversation about ending prohibition and co-sponsoring the Marijuana Justice Act.

But they can’t do it alone.

Right now, 33 members of Congress have put their name on the House and Senate versions of this legislation, but we still have a long way to go. Politicians are starting to realize that legalization is not only good policy, but good politics. Send a message to your federal officials and tell them to put their name on this legislation too.

The ongoing enforcement of cannabis prohibition financially burdens taxpayers, encroaches upon civil liberties, engenders disrespect for the law, impedes legitimate scientific research into the plant’s medicinal properties, and disproportionately impacts communities of color. The Marijuana Justice Act would be the sensible, moral, and rational way to end the failed policy of marijuana criminalization.

In 2016, over 650,000 people were arrested for marijuana. The consequences are staggering. From time spent in jail to the costs of legal fees – to the collateral consequences, including but not limited to having to list a criminal offense on a job or housing application, the criminalization of cannabis is a cruel concept that most hurts those in poverty and is disproportionately enforced against people of color.

Don’t wait until 4/20 to take action. Send a message to your lawmakers NOW.

Thanks for standing up, speaking out, and being a NORML citizen.

  1. Senator Bernie Sanders is rational, reasonable, and he actually serves the American People. That is why, when he saw he could not beat Hillary for the Democratic nomination in 2016, he threw his support behind her, and encouraged his followers to do the same.

    This is a warning for us now!

    We on the left MUST unite to defeat Traitor Trump. That does not mean a mindless and pointless shift toward the centrists. They must move left, get with progressive America, and we must ALL get behind The Democrat! No third parties to split the progressive vote this time!

      1. Dont make this a political issue…last thing we need! It is a medical issue to us Vets and a social issue for Americans. Our right to self-determinate has no political barriers.

      2. DKW,
        This NORML website supports marijuana legalization, which is a political issue. The Democrats support marijuana legalization; the Republicans oppose it.

        So, if you support marijuana legalization, GET OUT AND VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRATS!

  2. Democrats own the marijuana legalization issue.

    From Daily Kos and Stephen Dreyfus:
    Lee Turner, the candidate for SC-04 Congressional district:
    (Excerpts)
    “Hi, this is Lee Turner, out on the street again. It’s April 17th, tax day. I hope you have yours filed. If not, go home and do it right away.

    “Today I want to talk about how we have come we have 5% of the world’s population in America, but we have 20 to 25% of the world’s prison population? How did we get there and how do we fix it? Well, I blame the beginnings of it on good old Richard Nixon, who had trouble back in the late 60’s with hippies and blacks getting in the way of his Viet Nam War… So he came up with the controlled substance act in 1970.”
    (…)
    “And so now we have a whole community of people who have been incarcerated due to small and inconsequential drug violations, many of them related to marijuana and small amounts of marijuana at that. And now we have an Attorney General [Jeff Sessions] who thinks medical marijuana is an over-hyped medical myth. And we don’t think that’s true at all.”
    (…)
    “In fact, I want to say, if cannabis is so dangerous, and belongs as a Schedule I drug, why does the US government own a patent on cannabis? It is patent number 6630575, and it is for the use of cannabis as an anti-inflammatory and neuro-protectant.”
    (…)
    “So there are all sorts of reasons for us to reform marijuana laws, and reform prison systems sentences related to those. So that’s just one thing on the list today we need to fix. We need to send somebody to Washington that’s not afraid to speak truth to power, and in my opinion, that would be me. My name is Lee Turner. I’m running for Congress in the Fourth District. Please vote on June 12th, which is the primary, and get on my Facebook page, donate to my Act Blue site if you can, and encourage all your like-minded friends to do the same. Thank you.”

    1. Let me emphasize the significance of that — SC-04, that’s South Carolina! This is not liberal San Francisco, here! If you live in SC, here is your call to action! Support Lee Turner!

    2. Oh it was fine for Jeff Session’s when he was a member of the klu klu clan!!to he betrayed them! And quit smoking!!

    3. Quick correction here: Patent # 6630507!
      Here’s a birthday that will help everyone remember: the Ultimate Hamburger, Johannes Brahms, 18330507.

    4. Dick Nixon was a bastard. I’ll never forget nor forgive him for unleashing paraquat on the marijuana fields. He was the worst shit-stain to ever occupy the WH, even worse than the Prince of Orange.

      1. Agreed, paraquat was deeply immoral. I think Trump is perfectly capable of such crimes, and more. If it suited him at the moment.

        Speaking of Syria, paraquat was a chemical attack by an American President against his own people. Just for perspective.

      2. Then again, for traitors poisoning American cities, go no further than Republican Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan, and the city of Flint.

        When will Snyder serve prison time?

    5. I could never understand how the US Gov can have a patent on a bush!? Like having a patent on a shark….really?

  3. Please legalize cannabis now! 80 years of pot prohibition is too longToo many lives have been ruined because of pot related arrests! Let’s wise up and make cannabis legal medically and recreationally!

  4. It is a plant that saves lives and helps people to be as normal as they can be from mentel health to women that have bad menstrual cycle so I think that people need to get over the what stereotypes that cannabis is a bad thing it helps me with my to coop with every day life I have OCD and it is hard to do somethings and with my mediation I can go out and in joy life a little better thank you for standing up for people like me

  5. It’s just a waist of time. to keep up with this Law. it’s out dated and don’t show the wish of the people. it’s needs to get of the FDA’s S1 list so we can all get to the important matter of the Country. It will make it off the list.
    Just when and how much will it cost the Country, is up to the people that is fighting it.

  6. From Daily Kos and Carolyn Fiddler:

    “Take a look at New Mexico state Rep. Debbie Rodella’s greatest hits and see if you can guess which party she belongs to:

    “Just over a year ago, she killed proposals to implement automatic voter registration and same-day voter registration by voting to let these bills die in committee.

    “In 2013, she voted against a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.

    “And she’s repeatedly used her position as chair of a key committee to protect payday lenders from reform measures—even as she’s received sizable contributions from the industry.

    “If you guessed that Rodella’s a Republican—despite that being a perfectly reasonable assessment—you’d be quite wrong.

    “Rodella is, in fact, a Democrat who was first elected to the New Mexico state House in 1992, and she hasn’t faced a primary challenger in over a decade.

    “But progressives in the state are increasingly aware of Rodella’s betrayals, and this cycle, a candidate who represents real Democratic values is taking her on. Daily Kos is thrilled to endorse Democrat Susan Herrera in New Mexico House District 41.”

    1. Dain,

      Thanks for posting this. I didn’t know this about Debbie Rodella–hell, I don’t even know Debbie Rodella. But she is obviously a typical right wing GOPer–I think they all are these days–who is against legalization, environmental protections, racial equality, social security, etc etc

    2. Shame on me! I posted before reading your post to the end–she’s a Democrat! She definitely needs to find new employment. We’ve got a few DINOs like her here–mostly from the southeast part of the state–the ultra conservative part. I’ve talked to them a few times in the past–they’re nearly as bad as GOPers on some issues.

    3. Shame on me twice! I just now read your link. This is what I get for whipping through the posts too quickly.

      The irony about Debbie Rodella is that she’s in one of the more liberal parts of NM. I’m definitely glad that she’s finally been exposed. DINOs like her should go extinct.

  7. Trump made a deal with Cory Gardner. This is Donald’s chance to make a deal with the OTHER Cory, Cory Booker, and of course with Bernie Sanders. We gotta stop any kind of Jim Crow that is linked to cannabis prohibition.

    https://www.thecannabist.co/2018/04/13/trump-marijuana-legal-protections-cory-gardner/103535/

    I’m waiting for Bill deBlasio and Andrew Cuomo to coordinate and allow The Big Apple and other cities in New York state that are allowed to have their own sales taxes to legalize, and state and local authorities will not enforce prohibition, no local or state resources allowed just the because the feds are douchebags.

    http://merryjane.com/news/new-york-politicians-are-warming-up-to-legal-weed-as-election-season-approaches

    Yeah, Texas! Legalize in Tejas!

    https://www.thecannabist.co/2018/04/19/texas-marijuana-poll/103871/

    1. Don’t hold your breath, Andrew Cuomo. Signed into law one of the most restrictive medical marijuana laws in the country, the cherry on top is that , included in the law, the governor can repeal it at his own discretion

      1. Andrew Cuomo is a shit-stain on the Democratic Party, and should be replaced with a progressive. He’s an enabler of groups like The Independent Democratic Caucus, which is a group of Democrats who have given the GOP power in New York state.

        From a website called New York State Politics:

        “Over the weekend a significant political deal took place between Senate Republicans and Independent Democratic party members. According to the Daily News, Senate Republicans have agreed to not financially back any candidate that runs against IDC members in the next election. In return, per usual in quid pro que arrangements, IDC members have agreed to not vote for a Democratic majority leader should the democrats regain control of the Senate.

        “This agreement essentially ends the possibility of Democrats being able to re-gain control of the Senate unless they run a primary challenge against IDC members. However, the chances of that are minimal for two reasons; 1. IDC members are very well liked by the local democratic party leaders in their districts, making it difficult to find someone to primary IDC members. 2. The State Senate Democratic Committee has very little money to waste on fruitless ventures. The SDCC has enough money to try to win back a few seats they lost in the Republican sweep last November, but not enough to try to wrestle seats out from under other democrats. . . . ”

        These are your Centrist Dems, folks. On too many issues, there’s barely any difference between them and GOPers. They’re the ones who give Dems a bad name, and the ones oftentimes, like GOPers, who ignore or repress MJ legalization.

        They’re also the ones who attacked Bernie Sanders during this last election every bit as zealously as the GOP (and continue to do so). We can’t cleanse our country of the rotten GOP policies until we cleanse our own party of similar policies.

  8. Thanks for the Quinnipac Poll link for Texas, Oracle.

    Fascinating to watch the two faced deals on one end and the real cosponsoring of mj legislation on the other. I love the legislation Sanders recently submitted to give 10-year-minimum prison sentences for Pharmaceutical execs who bend the rules to sell more opioids and pain pills. Hey, Jeff Sessions wants to make his pri$on quotas, right? He’s just locking up the wrong people!

    Cosign, Gardner. Thats how you get votes. Not by surrendering drug warrior nominees to the President for hollowed promises.

    But it sure does set the agenda, as a President should… although Trump and the GOP are still bullying and bluffing their way into consessions by making promises without signatures, the marijuana legalization campaign agenda just got real competitive.

    When are we going to launch ads in Dallas to make Pete Sessions resign? Let’s crowdfund it and organize with DFW NORML. Use the momentum while the GOP still has to sell mj legalization to their own constituents… May run offs are right around the corner, but we don’t have to wait till then.

    You can’t bluff or get votes with nothing but a promise. Not for MJ legalization. Cosign and walk the line.

  9. Dain Bramage says:
    when Bernie Sanders saw he could not beat Hillary for the Democratic nomination in 2016, he threw his support behind her, and encouraged his followers to do the same.

    i notice you failed to mention;
    obummer, hillary, and the DNC, (and even elizabeth warren) conspired to rig the entire process against Bernie Sanders, or he would have won easily.

    i notice you failed to mention;
    Bernie Sanders could have sued hillary and the DNC, over the numerous frauds committed against him, but did not.

    i notice you failed to mention;
    obummer promised to legalize mj, during his campaign.
    he did not do it.
    he did not even TRY to do it.

    i notice you failed to mention;
    hillary did not say one word about mj legalization during her entire campaign.

    Dain Bramage says: No third parties to split the progressive vote this time!

    the ONLY THING that will scare the democrats into really representing us,
    is supporting a third party.

    when they know, that they are going to go extinct, like the ‘whig’ party did, they will shape up, and represent us, or be replaced by those who will represent us.

    all the progress the dems brought us, like ‘the new deal’, were started by third parties, and only reluctantly picked up by the dems, in SELF DEFENCE.

    THAT, is why the dems are helping us, now;
    our issue finally has enough support, to make a third party candidate viable.

    the blacks, have been voting for the dems, for decades.
    what has that gotten them ?
    nothing.

    as long as the dems are ‘our only choice’, they have no reason to represent us.

    you just love those corrupt democrats,
    even when they are screwing us, don’t you, Dain Bramage !!

    1. Traitor Trump Sucker,

      You sound bitter.
      Fuck yes I support the Democrats! I didn’t bring up your bullshit, because it’s bullshit.

      Leaving you in the dust!

    2. Weak arguments. The Hillary campaign is over. Enjoy your lawsuits. MJ reforming, PAC-refusing Dems are gonna crush R’s hard in Texas come November.

    3. The New Deal was started by third parties? What? FDR started the New Deal, in 1932, as a welcome recovery package for the American people after years of GOP misrule left the country in economic shambles. Social Security, minimum wage and many other programs came out of that FDR New Deal.

      Also, the biggest reason Bernie Sanders didn’t sue Hillary or the DNC was that he KNEW the alternative–Trump and the GOP–would be far, far worse. He said it many times.

    4. Lots of room for the left and progressives to stake out their positions, under any banner you want. But when it comes time for the ballot box, progressive third parties and Democrats must vote for the progressive candidate charged by The People with the task of kicking the Republican candidate’s ass! That’s gonna be a Democrat.

      Or, Welcome to Russia.

    5. Trump is a terrorist with twenty pounds of dynamite strapped to his chest. Of course it should scare anybody in the vicinity, and that’s all of us. Disarm the sick fucker, lock him in an asylum, and study him for science.

  10. more proof for reality deniers;

    oh,bummer, and trump, both promised to end NAFTA…
    (neither one did, oh,bummer, gave us MORE ‘free trade’ deals, and trump is still talking about the TPP)

    but ROSS PEROT had ending NAFTA and all ‘free trade deals’, on his platform, YEARS before.

    our so-called ‘leaders’, do not really lead, they follow, what has allready gained popularity, AFTER being propsed by third party candidates.

    1. Denial,
      That’s a fascinating theory, but third parties, by splitting the progressive vote, gave us ass-clowns like Trump’s mini-me, Maine’s LePage; and of course, Traitor Trump himself.

      You’ve done enough damage, we see the horrible results of third party votes.

      Punish the Republicans for inflicting Trump on the good people of America! Vote Democratic, and legalize marijuana!

    2. Denial;
      I think you’re on the wrong website. Were you looking for yahoo comments?

  11. Legalization could fix the state budget and eventually the national budget look how well it did in Colorado and other states it’s illegal in now . I’d much rather see people smoke than drink alcohol . Alcohol seems to make people feel 10 foot tall and bulletproof . Marijuana does exactly the opposite it mellows you out and relaxes you . And just look at all the medical possibilities it has . It’s a herb it’s not man-made I think that’s better than any chemical man could put together to cure illnesses . If it’s working for that purpose why not make it legal ? I believe alcohol and cigarettes are more dangerous to a person and smoking marijuana and I’m sure there a lot of other people that agree with me .
