Support for Marijuana Legalization Blooming in the South

normlpollban

It is often said that the South will be the last region in the United States to take up marijuana legalization, but, as support grows nationwide, it is becoming evident the southern states likely won’t be left behind.

Polling data released today by the ACLU of Louisiana revealed that 53% of Louisiana voters supported regulating marijuana in a manner similar to the models approved last November in Colorado and Washington. Only 37% were opposed and 10% were not sure.

Hopefully state politicians are paying attention, as it seems advocating for marijuana law reform will also win you support from voters. 49% of respondents stated that they’d be more likely to vote for a lawmaker who advocates for reducing marijuana related penalties.

  1. Would have been surprised if the South lagged behind with their own regulation. It seems as if the states who have not enacted policies will quickly adopt the policies of other states, as this is something that the majority of the population appears to want. Those unsure need only an adequate education from organizations like this one (NORML).

  2. I am disappointed in Obama’s lack of legislative action on MMJ but I have to also admit,,by laughing at us in the first public interactive Whitehouse statement that “Growing our economy was not the right way to go”(IIRC)spurred me and a lot of other advocates to redouble our efforts to end this insanity.

He then turned it over to the bully boys and let them handle it in their bully boy fashion and now even people that don’t smoke marijuana hate them….that is the way I see it Vern.

  3. BEING FROM FLORIDA I HOPE IT COMES TO BE! The southern states have law enforcement as a large employer. I fear where they will focus this large force they have built up with the war on drugs next, on some other misguided adventure they can cook up. I Pray they will wake up down here. Our currant AG likes the pot is bad propaganda so arrest all evil doers.

  4. Plenty of tokers in South Carolina, just most are afraid to admit it, since it is illegal! Who wants to write a letter to the Editor of the local newspaper and then have the cops at there door.

  5. Do not leave out the south in these times of change.I’m a 30 yr old male that don’t smoke but is all for the leagelize of marijuana. It will be a grate economy boost and make thousands of jobs for our state.Don’t Leave Us Behind!!

  6. The state of Lousyanna is a politically backwards state. Politicians in that state typically only do something new when it has some sort of profit in it for them. Remember, this is a state with private prisons and state reps who made jokes and sucking sounds the last time any cannabis reform was mentioned in chambers.

  7. As a louisiana resident with a disability. That the use of cannabis would help immensely. I can only hope that our state goverment can come of fits archaic views of cannabis and give the ppl what the are asking for.

  8. This is happening faster than we would have imagined just a few years ago. To me it’s proof that the underlying rationale for marijuana prohibition is finally being seen for what it is–official paranoia.

  9. The spirit of New Orleans will become fully complete again after surviving many years of various types of prohibitions. People would actually enjoy listening to jazz rather than to have it as a commercialized background music. It will be a real trip going to the wax museum under the influence of your favorite strain of cannabis.

  10. DONT BE SCARED IM IN A SMALL TOWN WHERE METH IS SAFER TO BUY THAN MARIJUANA!!!! LEARN THA LAWS AND LETS RALLY THE SOUTH LIKE MARTIN LUTHER KING.
    WE HAVE A DREAM!!!!

  11. I’d like to see the same poll administered in South Carolina. I’d like to see the same results as from Louisiana, but then again there are some very conservative Christian-types here haha

  12. The 2012 election returns showed medicinal cannabis in Arkansas running far ahead of President Obama. Cannabis reform is becoming more popular than either of the two corporate/cop political parties; in 2012, five states had cannabis reform ballot measures and in each of those states, reform got more votes than one or the other of the corporate/cop candidates. In Colorado, the only swing state of the five, legal weed beat BOTH Obama and Romney. THESE ARE THE ONLY POLLS THAT COUNT!
Politicians don’t listen to reasoned arguments, as a rule, but rather to two things: money or votes. And votes will trump money. Public opinion is shifting in favor of reform, but the leading edge to win this struggle MUST come from the people with the most at stake–the cannabis consumers, growers, and distributors. We have to learn to vote, in every election, and to vote the way we smoke. Cannabis reform must become THE wedge issue of the next few years. We want to end “the New Jim Crow” of mass incarceration and 2nd-class citizenship; we want to explain how legal cannabis will lead to a far safer society (put gangs out of business by taking the business out of the gangs); we always will get a positive reaction to the promise that legal cannabis (for all uses) will grow jobs and revenue–so let’s get growing! As we get closer to commanding a clear majority of public opinion, however, be warned that the opposition won’t collapse. Prohibitionists and their legal-racketeer allies (cops, liquor lobby, big pharma, etc.) would rather strangle democracy itself than capitulate on cannabis. They will fight hard and fight even dirtier than ever and we must brace for a contest which will decide the soul of America–a free country or a narco-totalitarian surveillance state?

  13. The VA wants to declare me incompetent because I smoke pot for chronic pain, deppression, and anxiety. No lie, I need help!

  14. Georgia will be the last state to legalize unless metro Atlanta does it first. Southern churches control politicians and law enforcement makes too much money from citations and incarceration for change to happen. Plus the blacks and whites try prove to the other race that their more moral. The south is a police state region.

  15. Yes, there’s support in the South! The reason it hasn’t happened here yet is that we can’t do voter initiatives. Meaning, we don’t have a true democracy in the South. All the legalization in CA, CO, WA, et al, as a result of voter initiatives.

Remember this brave, articulate kid from Athens, GA?

He gathered over 2,000 signatures for a city decrim bill and the govt just ignored it.

    That’s why it hasn’t happened.

  16. What about Atlanta, don’t leave us behind, but it looks like that is just what’s going to happen, unless we can get a Democratic Governor elected. Gov. Deal (R) won’t even take free money from the gov’t so that everyone can have health care. Here in Atlanta, everyone is preoccupied with corruption and scandal, from our tax commissioner, public schools, to the housing authority; we need a joint just to relax, and forget, at least for a minute, all this negativity. Down here it’s SELF, SELF, SELF!

  17. Praise the lord we the Christians here in south Carolina are accepting the overwhelming proof that medical marijuana is beneficial and with more information making its way into the homes and church’s more and more Christians are c around. What people don’t understand is hol marijuana is administered. People are under the impression that you are going to give a child a joint or smoke a blunt with granny. And why would they think any different? I am 55 years old and have smokedpot since I was 16. I have severe pain in my knees and get disability for them. I have always been in pain and a a resultnabuaeddeugs. So 18 yes ago sick of usingiI enrolled in a local methadone program. I am still going. I however got busted by a dag nab it swab test 7 months ago. Sooooo I had to give up my beloved cannabis. All of a sudden I started having major health problems. I had pain for years but no other kind of medical issues. Well…. as I hit the 3 month clean milestone I had a yearly scheduled physical…omg my blood pressure up,high cholesterol, low thyroid, depression, eye problems, I was a frigging mess. Why? I had been to the doctor just 6 months before and no problems. So I started looking into it. Could my daily use of cannabis being cut out having an adverse effect? I met a wonderful compassionate woman on line who has ms and at the time was the director of compassionate Idaho for medical marijuana. She was my god send. She was going through crap with CPA and had to stop mediating at the same time. We used each others shoulders. I watched my beloved friend go up to 15 pills a day and her quality of life spiral downward. She was in such severe pain. After months of begging, bitching, praying she finally got it through her head if she wanted to live she had to move. She is not rich and just like us regular folks lives month to month. But she moved 2 months ago to Oregon. She is physically doing so much better. She has educated me on medical cannabis. She is so wonderful and still thinks of others. She is founding the undergreen railroad ck out on fb. Money still tight so skunk mag n world famous. Cannabis cup are holding a fund raiser for the, 21 of sept. I don’t have link but u can find on fb I’m sure. So even though I still can’t medicate I have hope. But I have learned so much. I now preach Jesus and medical marijuana. We can win this battle. We have the votes. Christians will support it when they are educated about it. After all god made it not man and god

  18. A war on drugs has its orgins in a desire to protect the ignorant from those who would take advantage of them. Today it continues to maintain the status quo because of the fear that comes from enlightenment, jobs and profit margins, control and subjugation. Its like another form of slavery perpetuated by a culture fearfull of change.

  19. What ads grant said plus I am a chronic pain person who is blind as well . I am the lowest hanging fruit. Trying not to loose my wife and life over this, my life is hard enough I don’t need this . EVEN THOUGH MY WIFE KNOWS IT MAKES MY LIFE BEARABLE, SHE REFUSES TO HELP ME GET THE MED I NEED , DEALERS DON’T CARE IF YOUR IN PAIN OR HOW WELL YOU SEE OR HOW SHITY YOUR LIFE IS. DR S IS MAKING DR PISS TEST . I FIND IT IRONIC THAT I COULD BE A RAGING METH, COKE ALCHOBOLIC AND STILL PASS THE TEST OH YEA HEROIN ADDI T AS WELL ALL THE THINGS THEY ARE LOOKING FOR CAUSE DEATH EXCEPT WHAT I NEED TO MAKE MY LIFE BETTER. THANK YOU FOR READING PRAY FOR ME AND ALL OF USE. TRYING NOT TO BLOW MY BRAINS OUT

  20. @potinSC – You’re so right about people being afraid to speak up for fear of being identified and targeted by the law. It is shameful that anyone in America would feel that way but I don’t blame them. I too feel that fear but seek to spread the truth and fight the injustice in spite of the risks. As an ex-Marine I would not respect myself if I were to simply cower in the shadows.

  21. Idaho supports the sothern states! When it comes to marijuana ignorance Idaho and Wyoming top the list. You can smell the stink coming from the drunk republicans, and dirty old mans club in Boise from 400 miles away over here in Pocatello.

  22. The best thing anyone can do that wants to push for legalization is to be public about legalization, while not under the influence.

I have been sober for years now, and I still hope for recreation legalization. No one can say I’m addicted because I’ve been clean for almost 3 years now.

The recent studies taken completely blow the Reagan propaganda out of the boundaries of acceptable logic in this day and age. As well as States beginning to catch on to what’s really at stake now.

The US Gov’t can no longer afford to say no. Armed Forces are almost completely broke, and Cities are declaring bankruptcy. How long can they keep up this facade?

  23. Attention Floridians! We need you to go to http://www.unitedforcare.org and fill out and mail the petition. Get your friends to sign and mail it in for them. We have enough signatures to get the courts to review the wording before it goes on the ballot. We just need the rest of the required signatures to get it on the 2014 ballot. Surveys show that it will pass and the Governor is expected to sign it if it passes. Normal, we could use your help shining the spotlight on our state.

  24. I agree with what others have stated here – it is hard to speak out and tell the truth about cannabis when it would endanger your standing, your job/livelihood, and your freedom. I have seen firsthand how cannabis has helped my wife so tremendously with her chronic migraines and insomnia. She is a totally different person compared to when she had to depend solely on her prescribed medicines for pain and insomnia. She was a zombie. Everyone notices how she is doing so much better and how she seems like a different person. We feel almost unfaithful (to MJ) that we cannot freely boast about how IT has helped her.

In recent months, due to chronic pain from an injury and extreme stress/depression from events in my family/life, I too have started to use cannabis on days that I am off work. It is a night and day difference in how great I feel when compared to days that I cannot medicate. It is criminal that this should be deemed illegal by a corrupt government and that folks have to be “law breakers” to get the relief that cannabis affords.

I would also note that neither of us are “smokers.” I make capsules out of cannabis-infused coconut oil.

    God bless!

  25. I cant wait till it is legalized in Louisiana and someday Texas. Lousiana will probably do it it would really help their economy. IN addition many people would wisen up and start smoking pot instead of drinking deadly alcohol. I stopped a 25 year old drinking habit with marijuana. Havent had a drink in 13 years and dont want one as long as marijane is available.

  26. Reading dr mj it breakers my heart. In wal mart yesterday I was buying t shirts to be printed by my friend with marijuana is safer than alcohol slogan on them . They were on sale for three bucks so I had 12black tees in hand when in line behind me came two ladies from my church. Now both over 70. Soooooo when they asked me what in the world was I doing with a arm full of tees…I told them. The horror on their faces was all it took for me to get up on my soap box . Now 4 once I was glad they only had 2 check outs. By the time we left I had turned these wonderful Christian ladies around to our side. If the vote was today thesetwo would vote for medical marijuana. How did I do it. I told the truth. They both thought medical marijuana was to smoke a joint. They had never heard of all the illinesses that marijuana can help. The one lady had lost her husband two weeks ago. She talked of his severe pain from lung cancer. She wondered if medical marijuana might had helped him? The knowledge of not having to smoke it was very important to them. In addition the knowledge it helps children with autism and in cancer and one lady has neuropathy . They were blown away and now you gotta know I’m a novice in this education of the masses. But I am a Christian, I am not using marijuana, and I am a supporter of medical marijuana. So dag nab it I am no longer going to sit back and be afraid. What do I have to be afraid of? I am not breaking the law. Now don’t get me wrong if it was legal in South Carolina I would be the first one to burn a big old fat joint. But until then I will not use. Why for two reasons # 1 as a Christian I want to live the Christian lifestyle and that includes not breaking my states laws and # 2 I would be kicked out of the methodone treatment program I have been in for 18 years. So ..I am stuck with either breaking the law, fighting for legalaziation, or moving to a state where it is legal. Well I am poor, so moving not an option, I’m a Christian so breaking the law not an option so look out South Carolina lawmakers I can vote, I can type, and I can pray. I am going down on my knees and praying for the strength of Jesus Christ to help me in this fight. Remember Christian’s are full of love and compassion. We love our families and do not want them to suffer. If we are educated we will stand up for what is right and medical marijuana for sick people is right. So how can we lose. We can’t. We have Jesus on our side. So I understand if you have to hide in a closet to keep your job, and stay out of jail, but as for me I am ready to stand up and be recognized as an South Carolina Christian for medical marijuana (scc4mm).

  27. If it doesn’t get legalized in louisiana soon, I’m headed for the rockies. Always wanted to retire in the mountians without hurricanes or mosquitos to worry about. The south will most certianly be the last to release their legal grip on the people. they don’t want to quit busting people, or stop that money coming along with all those charges. If it does happen, anyone caught doing anything other than weed will certianly be detained indefinatly!

  28. As a Floridian , and a Christian , I know there is nothing like Christ to motivate you. Look to
Genesis chapter 1 in the beginning. God made all plants bearing seed. The devil never made anything but death and new ways to take your soul. The people that made pic thought they were doing something, good but they did it In the name of profit you can replace the drug with your choice of MED. Canabis is a gift from God for those that crave peace in their lives. I figured out long ago that drugs are for sick people one should not use anything unless they have the need. That means no booze. Using alcohol for me is a sin. But let’s face it we live In a free society that has to have a separation In church and state so we should not judge others long as they don’t take your rights away. So just like rights of all people we should respect a person’s free will

  29. The only thing that can get things done is money and votes. Most of us have voting rights, some have money. If ya have some money to spare – contribute to Normal or a like organization and/or email this message to your elected officials and stand firm. Also send to like minded friends and family:

I can no longer support elected officials or organizations that support current prohibition laws. I have decided not to vote for any politician that does not publicly support the removal of all penalties for the private possession and endorse responsible use of marijuana by adults, including cultivation for personal use, and casual nonprofit transfers of small amounts.
20 million arrested is 20 million reasons why.
The problem is the law – not the plant.

  30. Potted in SC, you know, if you southern potheads are such pussies, well you are getting what you deserve. You cannot be punished for talking good about marijuana. You can be punished for promoting its use to children. See the difference?

Unless you’re at a school for children, you can talk about marijuana and how good it is all day long. But instead you would rather give up that right along with your first admendment too? Even if you were lying like a prohibitionist your first admendment rights cannot be abridged. Do not be afraid to speak the truth.

  31. I live in Florida. The “Come on vacation leave on probation return on violation state”. This will be the last state to give any freedoms to the civilian population. This state actually imports felons on probation from other states to keep the lie that crime is rampant. No there will be no legalization here. I have not seen this “petition” anywhere to sign. Tragic to say the least.

  32. Fuck you Dale! I am from SC. Are you calling me a pussy? I haven’t beaten a Yankee’s ass yet today! Come on down and let me show you some southern hospitality, punk.

  33. @ Dennis, Thank-you! I’d rather not have a fight with you, but my point is you can’t just sit there and pretend you are down with potheads being treated like dirt and then go home and light up. Feel tree to take my comment and expand it to the whole county.

I know in some areas, it is cool to talk trash about blacks, and some blacks like to talk trash about whites too. But I don’t put up with it. When someone starts spouting off about these or those people they don’t know nothing about; I try as politely as possible to get them to stop with their propaganda bullshit. Potheads, Jews and blacks probably get the most evil propaganda directly at them in this country, followed up with Muslims.

It is just getting really old, how these things keep persisting; as though acting like shitheads toward our neighbors is part of our culture. Stand up for what is right, not for what is wrong. And maybe we’ll finally find an answer:

  34. Legalize Louisiana this is america land of freedom of choice this ain’t Russia I’m so sick of the crap let’s start voting these people out of office, congressmen, sheriffs, governors, council men,Presidents, anyone who is against weed , let’s fight for are rights now they got people smoking synthetic weed killing there self cause they can’t smoke weed . Who are u hurting smoking pot.the cops love going after pot smokers so they can get that federal grant money are tax dollars more arrest more grant money but doctors can kill people everyday with pills 17 years at same job own my house no criminal record accept weed work my ass off every day pay my taxes keep to my self and can’t even smoke a joint is this america

  35. Ok I just gotta address the bs on this blog. First why r we fighting among ourselves? Satan is sitting back laughing at our dumn asses. First what do you expect when u call people pussys? Now ugly only gets ugly. And I must agree with BOTH of you in some respects. First you can call folks names over the Internet when we all know only a coward would do so. Now as for the rest of your comment I must agree in principle we must start standing up and let our voices be heard, but what u don’t realize is how bad the unemployment rate here is. In my county the rate is 21% . The highest in sc. Now if u got an A.H. for a boss he can fire u for no reason. Yes he can. So if u got a child a wife a house payment you had damn well keep your mouth shut unless you r sure you will not lose your job. Is it right? Why heck no but it is the way it is. I was talking to a fellow at auto zone and he said he wanted to sign the petition but knew his boss would fire him in a second if he found out he did. I then told him how he could and his name not be public. He signed that night. So when u get on your box and call folks pussy know it is so much harder for a southern MAN to keep his mouth shut on something he believes in than to swallow his pride and keep his job. I assure you if we could be sure of not losing our income we would be screaming from the top of the hills. Now in response to what you did, say, about us speaking out u r so right and when you as my husband and I do run our own business we speak as loud as we can. Now we were at first concerned about the church and how the members would feel about our supporting Facebook.com got medicine. Well of course their are a few with their noses bent out of shape but our pastor said to pray on it and if we did and we felt Jesus was telling us to support this action to do so. He also sent us to genesis 1-29. So we are now doing all we can to promote and support medical marijuana. I am having some t shirts printed up with SCC4MM on front and on back South Carolina Christians for Medical Marijuana . Yep I thought up slogan ant it cute. My hubby thinks so. When I get some $ saved up I’m on disability and husband runs his own garage I’m a gonna have a few made up,to give to my friends. So I may be small town gal with small time $ but I got a big old vote and a big old computer and as hubby says a big old mouth. So I run my mouth without fear of losing everything and for those oppressed who cannot I love you I don’t judge you and I will speak for you. God bless you all. Let fight together not against each other.

  36. @daleevans

I’m glad you have come to your senses and said something constructive, instead of calling people you know nothing about “pussys”. You know, just like you said. Hypocrite! How the hell do you know what I stand for? I come here to educate myself, and do what I can. So, while you think you’re doing something good by calling a whole group of people names, do something constructive.

  37. Err, yeah, I don’t know any potheads in the USA… Come on. Walking up to someone and punching them in the face isn’t going to get you a bad name, but telling people you support reforming or ending the War on Drugs will? Your town is just too fucked up… I guess there is no hope.

I’m not a hypocrite, see I walk up to police in uniform and ask them to stop supporting the War on Marijuana via their union dues. I’m not a pussy. And I haven’t gotten a positive response yet. What, you don’t think I don’t have a job I have to worry about losing?

So you’re saying in the south, there is no First Admendment, you literally just gave it up somewhere along the way?

  38. Like the prohibitionists, you’re suffering from FEAR. False Evidence Appearing Real. It sucks big time, this lack of confidence in the truth. And it can lead you down the wrong path over and over until it finally kills ‘ya.

  39. First I would like to thank each and everyone, who are trying to get VA to be the first southern state to allow medical marijuana a goal for the 2014 election. And if we can and will vote for Mr. Robert Sarvis as our Gov we may finely brake the simple minded people. But I have a question (Why with the votes we have can’t put medical marijuana on the ballet for 2014) or even reclassified. Va. we can do it .but we have to get it on the ballot, time is running out . as Va. voters we can finely can do it. Please help . Can we do it.

  40. Hello NORML supporters in South Carolina!

I’m moving to your state very soon. While I complete my Paralegal Certification, I am seriously considering opening another chapter in Hilton Head/Bluffton area. Depending on the regulations and anticipated paperwork, I hope to have meetings open by late Jan/Feb. 2014, unless someone beats me to it. I was surprised to see how much the fines were on for 1 oz or less for first offense in SC($500) compared to GA ($1,000) just across the border. Phew!

I’m not putting my full resume up, but I am coming from a state that MMJ has been legal for a few years. I was fortunate enough to have friends running compassion clubs and have been a card holder myself for 2 years now.

MMJ has been the one of the most effective medications for my conditions. I live a life of pain, as many of us do, and this was the only things that helped with multiple issues. At the very least, it stimulates my appetite and relaxes my muscles (inside and out). Now, I will have to go without or medicate illegally hiding in my room like a teenager.

I truly believe that if I did not get my card, my situation would have been much worse. I’m worried that not having access is going to contribute to a decline in health, physical and mental. I hope not.

I want to share with those who seek it, need it, and don’t want to be criminalized for personal use be it medical or recreational purposes.

Keep a watch on what is going on if you’re in the area. If you want to join me, the more the merrier!

  41. In Florida Stalking is legal. Florida imports felons on probation from other states just to get money monitoring them and leaving the jurisdiction to other states effectively negating their probation and punishment for the violent crimes they did. If you are arrested for marijuana you cannot transfer your probation to Florida like violent criminals can. Marijuana is the bread and butter of the criminal injustice system in Florida and the Drug rehab Corporations. The judge tells you it’s either drug rehab or jail. Sounds just like volunteering for Vietnam when you were busted back then. It was either jail or Vietnam. Florida is an extremely corrupt State with extremely corrupt politions, judges , state attorneys, police ,etc….

  42. Here in the great state of Texas hypocrisy reaches a new irrational high on a daily basis, with dire conveniences for our sons and daughters. It is often said by norml supporters and dissidents alike that we will be among the last to legalize, but no one can give a definitive answer why. Our goveners are historically anti green while our capital (Austin) is wierdly famous for its open love of smoking. Here our countrys border has become the backdrop for a not so secret war on “drugs” which has claimed the lives of both outlaws and lawmen, as serious as this sounds popular opinion has made marijuana prohibition into a joke on almost every t.v. Chanel almost every day. Im not the brightest son in Texas but I know the difference between logic and preconceived notions. Why do we keep subtracting from ourselves instead of adding to? Is my point of veiw leaving me in the minority? I cant believe that and i will test my theory the next time I have an opportunity to vote.

  43. Everyone should have the right to smoke marijuana when we want. the drug generally isn’t more harmful than alcohol or tobacco is used in moderation.

  44. How I spread the message – every day I receive emails from politicians and organizations asking for support, donations, votes or some sort of action. I simply reply to all with the following :

I can no longer support elected officials or organizations that support current prohibition laws. I have decided not to support or vote for any politician or organizations that do not publicly support the removal of all penalties for the private possession and endorse responsible use of cannabis by adults, including cultivation for personal use, and casual nonprofit transfers of small amounts.

Over 20 million arrested is 20 million reasons why.

The problem is the law – not the plant.

    Signed – your name

  45. we need to move from this state to a state like california or colorado if 100000 people do this the tax revenue lost would devestate sc and if this happenshe acroshs the south and t

  46. we need help in northeast lousiana, the police will go barney fife on you for a stem, it’s tooooo much, the people who smoke are sick of law enforcement busting people with small amounts or small plants and saying they saved the streets from $1,ooo,ooo,ooo worth of marijuana, small town Louisiana is scary if you are a smoker, you don’t have to worry about meth you have worry about marijuana, please help us smokers in Bastrop, Mer Rouge, Monroe, Farmerville, Oak Grove and so on, again we need help in northeast lousiana please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  47. Hope you still read this, Jeff, but I’m with you all the way. I’m in a different state in the South right now and it’s much different than the other states in the US. I wish marijuana would be legalized throughout. Stay strong.
